The Violet Mirror Which Invites Death
-> RTS Page for Hell Teacher Nube 136
Revenge is a matter which may be tempting, but doing so may invite problems worse than intended. Katsuya may think he needs to get back at Miki for her treatment of him, but his means may end up dragging her to a nightmarish fate...
#136: The Violet Mirror Which Invites Death
99.
Narrator: The Great Wonders of the Violet Mirror: Long ago, a sole girl played a joke on her own favorite hand-mirror and painted violet paint on it.
(TN: The “incident” in this chapter is in Japanese “Murasaki Kagami”, but that directly translates into “purple mirror” or “violet mirror” so I translated it instead of keeping it in Japanese)
Narrator: However strangely, no matter how much she washed it, the violet color would never come off…the mirror which was confined with her own soul had been painted violet…in truth there was a dreadful meaning in there.
SFX: Zaza
SFX: Zaaa…
100.
Narrator: The girl afterwards suffered from a serious illness and died while muttering “violet mirror, violet mirror”.
101.
Narrator: Since that…those who remembered the tale of the Violet Mirror by the time they’re 20 will die or become cursed…various rumors flew about and it became one of the famous mysteries of campus throughout the nation…what exactly is the violet mirror…
Sign: Art Lab
Nube: Um—this is drawing. Portrait painting. Face each other and draw one another.
Futoshi: Ehehe, we’re mutually facing each other.
Girl: Kya—stop Futoshi-kun.
SFX: Pata pata | Doki doki doki
102.
Miki: Are you fine with this, Katsuya? Draw the truth of the beauty of Hosokawa Miki, the greatest super-beautiful girl of this century.
SFX: Pachi…
Katsuya: Ye…yes, understood. (to himself) Aah…I’m looking at her this closely…and further deliberately.
Miki: Fu…a faithful dog.
SFX: Ba ba ba ba ba
Katsuya: Uo—I’m burning up—
Hiroshi: Katsuya has unrequited love for Miki.
Katsuya: I’ve done it—(I don’t have regrets anymore)
103.
SFX: Doka | Baki | Goki! | Zuga
Miki: You were only looking at my chest when you were looking at me. You lecher, dummy, wretched; you’re the worst; I really hate you.
SFX: Geshi geshi geshi (Kick kick kick)

SFX: Boro…boro… | Shu----…
Katsuya: Y…you didn’t have to speak it that far…I…was eager to be together…
Katsuya: N? Miki’s compact…

Kyouko: What’s wrong!?
Miki: The…violet mirror. On my mirror which I forgot in the art lab by someone...
105.
Kyouko: Violet mirror? (What’s that…)
Miki: You don’t know!? It’s one of the great famous mysteries of campus! With my important mirror painted violet, I’ll have carried out a mysterious death…
Miki: Aah, enough, who on earth did this! It’s painted with lacquer; that won’t come off even if I wash it!
(TN: Just for those who don’t know what it is, “lacquer” is a clear or colored varnish that dries with evaporation leading a hard, durable finish)
SFX: Ja—
Katsuya: Eh? Lacquer…? Strange…I pained it with regular watercolor paint…
Miki: Enough! In spite of that mirror being my favorite, having used it since I was 2!
SFX: Wa—wa—
Kyouko: How about if you wash it with thinner?
Miki: Really…! It’s great nothing’s happened but…

SFX: Bun!
SFX: Karan karan Bochan!
Kyouko: Ah…it’s the drainage of the pool…
Nube: What is this?
Nube: Namu Namu.
SFX: Bashi! Bashi!
Nube: No good, no matter how much I drive them away, they continue to gush out one after another.
Hiroshi: We don’t see anything—
Nube: They’re the dead who lost their way nearby to the entrance to the realm of the dead…If they are emerging from the compact that became that violet mirror, then the compact is connected to the entrance to the realm of the dead.
Miki: Eeh?
109.
Nube: Violet is a color that indicates that world as a Shikidama. Mirrors are an entrance and exit to the spirit world…perhaps painting violet a hand-mirror that has been used for many years and confined with feelings will come to have a curse of drawing that person to the realm of the dead…
(TN: Consult chp. 92 of vol. 11 to understand the concept of Shikidama and the effect of the color violet/purple)
Kyouko: So…that’s just from merely painting color on it?
Miki: Uuh…but the Violet Mirror is one of the famous great mysteries to the extent of causing fear to all schools. Those who have joked as such and died have been many. Who exactly would do that to my compact?
Katsuya: Sorry…actually.
Miki: Right…it was you.
Katsuya: Yes…um…yes….well…
Miki: You’re the worst!
SFX: Bashii!
110.
Katsuya: ………
Nube: At any rate, we’ll search for the compact. They’re endless no matter how much I exorcise her.
Nube: Within that drain…but the compact isn’t here anymore…It’s flowing through the water.
Miki: Eh~~
SFX: Oooh…oooh…
Nube: It’s going through the underground pipe…it’s beneath nearby.
*Fuuchi (A device for searching for things in the earth)
Miki: How are you going to get it out!? Hurry up—the ghosts are steadily increasing…
Nube: Actually…the drainage of the pool flows out to an irrigation ditch outside school…
Caption: Consult Vol. 3
111.
Nube: Alright: we’ll run the pool’s water and squeeze it out with water pressure. Hiroshi and the others will wait at the irrigation ditch.
Hiroshi: Understood.
SFX: Kiri kiri kiri…

SFX: Gobo Gobo Gobo…

SFX: Boko boko boko

Ghosts: Come here; come he~~re; come here~~
Kyouko: Strange, only water’s coming out.
SFX: Dododo…
Hiroshi: Nube! Will it really flow out!?
Nube: No!
Nube: It’s not moving at all from that earlier place…s**t…it’s caught somewhere within!
112.
Miki: Hiiiii~~Nube, save me—
SFX: Buchi
113.
Nube: Miki. (to himself) Damn it…! When even spirits of the dead with weak power become a group, they become strong enough to destroy a barrier.
Nube: Ha!! S**t…Hiroshi! Kyouko! Tell the Principal and have him call the general contractor!
(TN: “General contractor” refers to the Japanese term “dogenya”, which is a general contractor of construction or engineering)
Nube: And we’ll only have to dig up this pipe…ku
Kyouko: Understood!
Hiroshi: But will we be in time!?
Katsuya: ……!
Katsuya: It’s my fault… (out loud) Aah. (to himself) It’s my fault Miki will…damn it…!
114.
Katsuya: Nube! I’ll do it! The pivot is that I’ll be getting that compact within the pipe; how’s—that!?
Nube: Eh!?
Nube: Dummy…how are you going to take it out of there!?
Miki: Ri—ght! Even though you’re the worst man without guts, you’ll cave in, stupid!
Katsuya: Miki…well I am the worst man without guts but…
Katsuya: But…even for…even for me, I plan to have the courage to stick out my life for a girl I like!
Miki: !
Kyouko: Katsuya
SFX: Ba!!
Hiroshi: Daa—
115.
Nube: Ka…Katsuya…you can’t be…stop that, it’s absurd!!
Katsuya: Uooo!!
SFX: Za
Katsuya: Ku…incredible water pressure; I’m being pushed back…damn it, can I lose this? Th…this is for Miki…

SFX: Byun
SFX: Gashi
Nube: Namu Daiji Daihi Kyuugu Kyuunan: hell-road opened by this violet mirror.
(TN: I didn’t quite know or remember the right way to use the expression of “Myoudou”, but since it uses the kanji for “Myou” similar to the “Mei” of “Meikai” or “Hades/Hell”, I ended up making it “Hell Road”)
Nube: Close!!
SFX: Doshuuu
117.
Katsuya: Are you alright, Miki?
Miki: Katsuya…
Miki: --Well, I understand well your feelings about me.

NUBE’S WEIRD FILES
#23: The Violet Mirror
The “Violet Mirror” is one of the new great mysteries of the campus that has spread to all of Japan in recent years. It is said as “If you remember the word ‘violet mirror’ until you’re 20 years old, you’ll die”. The presentation is a few as “the purple mirror”, “purple mirror”, “the violet/purple-colored mirror”, but at any rate they say that an ill omen will occur if this is forgotten within the teens.
(TN: The “the purple mirror”/”purple mirror”/”the violet/purple mirror” part is just a translation in English of the varied names of the phenomenon: in Japanese it is “Murasaki Kagami”, and the alternate readings are “Murasaki no Kagami”, “Murasakigagami” and “Murasaki-iro no Kagami”, which all have the same meaning of “purple/violet mirror”)
TN: First of all, once again I slipped in getting this up when I intended: having translated this yesterday but putting it up today. I guess sometimes it slips with the way things are always getting stressed with my job.
As for the chapter...well, flip a coin at who was at fault for causing all the problems. On one hand, Katsuya may have known little to nothing about the Violet Mirror phenomenon, but he should have realized it was no good...or at least remembered that Miki would know enough to know that it's a bad idea to take her mirror and paint it to lead towards killing her. Likewise, Katsuya did depict Miki the way he always sees her...and if she wasn't flaunting them so often and Katsuya wasn't such a pervert, maybe he would have done a better depiction of her for the art class. On the other hand, Miki was likewise at fault for both pushing Katsuya into creating the Violet Mirror...let alone throwing the compact mirror into the drain preventing it from being discovered and forcing all the hell she nearly got caught in! Who was worse depends on your perspective even if they both majorly screwed up...though it more or less was Katsuya who stood up to the phenomenon by getting the compact out of the pipe, thus clearing it all up. Sure Miki still isn't giving him any respect for doing so...but then again she sees men as dogs and a pervert like Katsuya is easy bait for her. Though...this chapter probably is the one that finally solidifies Miki and Katsuya as the "other duo" of the series...which shows how far we've gone from when the other "male" for Miki was Akira...then again Akira isn't a super pervert who draws super-exaggerated (not really) boobs instead of a portrait.
