(TN: Just for those who don’t know, like me, Waikiki is a neighborhood of Honolulu on the south shore of Oahu that is notable as a popular tourist destination since the first hotels opened in the 1880s; prior it would be where the Hawaiian royalty would surf. One notable aspect of the area is it is known for Japanese tourists, to the point that Japanese media company NTT has some operations here.)

(TN: Nube’s line here actually has him first say “Hawaii” in the Japanese manner of “Hawai”, then pronounce “Howai”, which is him literally asking the English word “why?”)

(TN: Nube’s comment here about “the man-made beach of Atami” refers to the sea-side resort town of Atami, which had been known as a place for retreat but had to make a beach in the 1980s artificially to reach out to younger audiences)

(TN: “Hickster” is translated from “Inakamono”, which also translates into “clown”, “bumpkin” or the literal “person from the country”)

BTW: while I translated “shunkan idou” as “instantaneous movement” earlier, I made it “instant transmission” mostly to connect it to the English DBZ dub when Goku learned the move)

(TN: Obviously many WSJ series are published both in China and in Hong Kong, as you can see by the display. Some of the various series you can see here that Nube is looking at include Chinese versions of “Midori no Makibao”, “Captain Tsubasa”, “Tenka Shonen” (which I think is “Hallelujah II: BOY”) and obviously “Hell Teacher Nube”. The one in Nube’s hand is actually the year-lasting cult 1992-1993 Jump series “Kyuukyoku! Hentai Kamen” by Keishuu Ando)

(TN: Nube’s comment here may be at a Chinese movie theater, but is actually about a Japanese film series known as “Otoko wa Tsurai yo” (It’s Tough to be a Man), also known as the “Tora-san” series. This film series, which originally began as a 1968-69 TV series called “Gukei-Kenmai” (The Goofy Brother and the Wise Sister), stars Atsumi Kiyoshi as traveling salesman Kuruma Torajirou, who always falls for a beautiful “Madonna” (a local damsel in distress) he wants badly, but unexpectedly always helps her out in bringing her together with another man that isn’t him. The “Gokumi” that Nube refers to regarding the co-star is Kumiko Gotou (“Gokumi” was her nickname) who starred in four of the later films of the series. The films, which always starred Atsumi and, outside two early films, were directed by Youji Yamada, was at one point the longest running film series in existence, having lasted 48 films between 1969 and 1995…which means it was for the most part done by this point with this chapter’s release in 1996.)

TN: I've been sort of fearing this volume for a while mostly due to the chapters and contents in it...but I have to say: this was a very fun way to start the volume off! (now we'll see how the rest of the volume goes) OK, maybe some of it just feels weird: having a little girl sort of synchronize her own possible spiritual power with Nube allowing for him to randomly teleport around the world was...well, weird. I mean, I get the girl didn't have the ability to control this power and that Nube was just randomly flying around everywhere that he was flying around towards. But even with how almost random and coincidental the girl's power worked alongside Nube's own, the way it threw Nube to places from the beaches of Hawaii to the streets of Hong Kong and just seeing him appreciate these places while trying to figure out what the heck was going on was a fun change of pace for him. I sort of wished Nube had more time in some of those places, but the saga takes place in Doumori so he can't venture too far from there without risking possible harm. Then again...it was all worth it for moments like Nube's "I'm used to this" bit with the northern latitudes freezing him (such happens with a yukionna girlfriend) and his weird comments about Hong Kong culture...and thinking Hawaii was Japan considering how many Japanese people end up in Hawaii for vacation anyway. Maybe not the most constructive chapters, but sometimes you just have to take these fun ones. (like this...or the one with the money youkai)
