While there are many useful youkai and many problematic youkai, it takes the right situation to determine which is which. Such is found when Miki takes in a peculiar artifact that has gained a strange ability...

#160: Mimicry Youkai Mishige

28.
Miki: Nube
Sign: Staff Office
Miki: I’ve brought my class fee but—ara, he’s not here—N? Those are the test from the other day…
Envelope: Hosokawa Miki
Miki: U~~m, I’ve got—ge, a 30!? S**t, I’ll make it a 70!
Miki: He’s got candy, lucky—
SFX: Bori bori bari

29.
Miki: Kya—what are these books!?
Right Magazine: Doecchi (Lewd)
Left Magazine: Ero (Erotic)
Miki: Uooooh~~~ (Haa haa haa)
Miki: Haa~~n--?
Miki: What is this? “Please exorcise this”? Hmmm…he’s being asked to exorcise this by someone.
SFX: Kapa…
Miki: Is there a youkai in here…?

30.
Miki: …What is this? A shamoji? It’s a shamoji…
(TN: A “shamoji” is a flat rice paddle used for mixing and serving rice. Usually it’s made of bamboo, wood or lacquer, but more recently it’s made of plastic)
Nube: Ah!
Miki: Ah.
Nube: Hey—you selfishly broke into a person’s desk—
Miki: Sorry for that~~
Sign: Hosokawa
Miki: I confusingly brought this but…it ultimately is a mere shamoji…
Miki: Oh well. I’m going to bed.
SFX: Pachi
SFX: Kuka~~

31.
“Voice”: Nube, I’ve brought my class fee but—ara, he’s not here—
Miki: ?
“Voice”: N? Those are the tests from the other day.
“Shamoji”: U~~m, I’ve got—ge, a 30!? S**t, I’ll make it a 70!

32.
Miki: Wh…what is this…?
“Shamoji”: He’s got candy, lucky—
SFX: Bori bori bari
“Shamoji”: Kya—what are these books!? Uooooh~~~Haa haa
Miki: It’s…mimicking me…
Miki: Hold on, it’s…
Book: Youkai Daih(yakka) (Youkai Encyclopedia)
Book: Mishige: An old shamoji apparition that is a kind of Tsukumogami; said to come alive in darkness and mimic people. It doesn’t particularly harm; “Mishige” has the meaning of shamoji in Okinawa dialect…

33.
SFX: Pashi
Miki: Fufuh…it will get interesting by the way I use this…
Caption: The next day—
Students: Morning—morning—
Kaneda: Uh—it’s coming out, it’s coming out.
SFX: Su
Kaneda: Fu—it’s suddenly done~~
SFX: Hyoi
Miki: Fufu…Mishige moves in the darkness. By covering it in my outfit like this…
SFX: Mozo mozo

34.
“Kaneda”: Ah~~it’s coming out
SFX: Muku
“Kaneda”: Uwa! It’s rushed out
SFX: Buri buri buri~~
“Kaneda”: Uwaa, it’s a huge poop. That’s astonishing. Hi~~it isn’t washing awa—y. I demand that you go away.
Miki: ………
Kaneda: So then—TV last night was—
Miki: Hey, Kaneda! Wash down that poop. (Boso)
SFX: Bikkuu!

35.
Miki: Ha ha ha: this is pleasant, pleasant.
Katsuya: Hey, Miki, we’re on flower bed duty. Let’s go water them.
Miki: Ah--? I’m busy now. You go do it alone. Really, in spite of having interest in me, you’re a useless man.
Katsuya: Oh…ooh. Then—I’ll do it.
Katsuya: They’re done.
Miki: Right: thanks—for the effort.
SFX: Basa!

36.
“Katsuya”: Ke, that Miki, she forces me to do all the things she doesn’t like; treating a person like a slave. Someday, I’ll “pi—“ to her huge boobs and “Zukyu—“ and “Ga—“ to them. Ke.
(TN: Don’t ask me what Katsuya wants to do to Miki…those SFX are what he says in the script so…well, it isn’t going to be good on Miki’s end)
Miki: Ka~~tsuya (heart)
Katsuya: Yes yes~~
SFX: Doga | Baki | Gusha | Beko
Katsuya: Gyaa
Caption: Girl’s Locker Room
Miki: Hey, Kyouko, look at this article.
Magazine: Women’s Content

37.
Miki: Is this a sexy spell exercise for making your chest bigger--? If you do this? (Kekeke…)
(TN: Miki’s “sexy spell exercise” is in Japanese “Sekushii Jumon Taisou”, with “Jumon” as “spell” or “incantation” and “taisou” being “physical exercise” or “gymnastics”. I ended up translating it as “sexy spell exercise” to sort of try and work in both meanings here)
Kyouko: W…worthless: I’ve figured that it’s a lie!
Article: Make your chest bigger
Miki: Kyouko, I’m going ahead—
Kyouko: Hinahina Hinahina Aota Noriko~~~Have a Kit-Kat in the Sexy Pose of Vivian Crawford.
(TN: Kyouko’s “spell” has a lot going on here that I sort of want to get into in order to understand it:
-First of all, the full Japanese spell that Kyouko says goes as such:
“Hinahina Hinahina
Aota Noriko~~~
Bibian Kurofuoodo
Sekushii Poozu de
Habua Kitto Katto”
-I did try to find a meaning for “Hinahina”, but I sort of came to a realization that it may just be a nonsense word used for Kyouko’s “spell”.
-Noriko Aota is a famous Japanese bikini model who became notable as a member of the “sexy group” C.C. Girls in the 90s, notable for her large bosom. She has since moved on to some serious drama roles.
-I tried to look up “Vivian Crawford” but had a hard time figuring out who she is based on my search so this one I can’t really go any further into.
-As for “Have a Kit-Kat”, it is referring to the famous Nestle-based candy brand that was originally created by Rowntree of York and sold in many countries by Nestle, including Japan. (in the US, Kit-Kat is under license with rival candy company Hershey) Japan is extremely notable for their wild and weird variety of Kit-Kat bars, with all sorts of strange flavors available nation-wide and even some only found in certain regions of the nation!)

38.
“Kyouko”: Uhuh, Aoki Yuko and Kuroda Mirei. Dekadeka muchi muchi peronperon.
(TN: Kyouko’s spell continued as such:
“Uffun
Aoki Yuko de
Kuroda Mirei
Dekadeka
Muchimuchi
Peronperon”.
As for the references:
-Yuko Aoki is another notable graveure model, notable in 1996 (the year of this chapter) as being the “Visual Queen of the Year” as crowned by Fuji TV. She “retired” from modeling in 1998 and has since been a musician.
-Mirei Kuroda was another “Visual Queen of the Year” from Fuji TV in 1996, likewise for her busty appearance.
-The last part of the spell involved various onomotopea words, including “dekadeka” or “large-large” and “peronperon” or “boing boing”, all of which to describe the large bosom Kyouko desires)
Miki: Hinahina hinahina Aota Noriko—
Miki: A~~hahaha: this is pleasant.

39.
Nube: Hey, Miki.
SFX: Ki—n ko—n ka—n
Nube: Don’t you have something from my desk?
Miki: Eh? It…it’s nothing.
Nube: Hey, it starts with an “S”…
Student: Teacher, farewell—
Nube: Oh—farewell—
SFX: Sa!
Nube: Well, Miki, confess. I’ll know immediately even if you make up a lie. Because if I investigate your youki, there will be a shot of it. Fu fu fu
Miki: Y…you’re scary.

40.
Nube: ……Strange, I feel nothing.
Miki: Don’t suspect me for everything.
Nube: ? ?
Miki: Fu—that was close, that was close. Huh? Makoto went home. Well, how about if I recover it tomorrow?
Caption: The next day—
Ritsuko: Um—Makoto-kun seems to have not come home since yesterday. Is there someone who knows anything?
Students: Zawa zawa zawa (Talk talk talk)
Ritsuko: Nueno-sensei has gone out to search for him, so first period will be self-study.
Miki: Chi…he was together with Mishige…I’m worried about that.

41.
Hiroshi: We’ll go search for him too.
Miki: Right, I’m worried.
Katsuya: Let’s go, let’s go!
Hiroshi: Nube
Left Sign:
Trash Dumping Ground
Burnable Trash
Monday – Wednesday – Friday
Nonburnable Trash
Nube: What is it, all of you? What’s the matter with self-study!?
Hiroshi: On the contrary, we can’t do it!!
Kyouko: How is it? Do you have some clue?
Nube: No…but his knapsack was in here…
Hiroshi: It can’t be.
Sign:
Irrigation Ditch
Danger!
Do Not Enter!
Noriko: Makoto-kun…
Nube: No…that’s…

42.
Miki: Makoto…
SFX: Zawazawa…zawazawa (talk talk talk talk)
Miki: Nube! Let me borrow Makoto’s knapsack!
SFX: Ba | Gasagoso
Nube: !?
Nube: Miki! That’s…
Miki: Get angry at me in the future! Well everyone! Take off your jackets
Student: Wh…what is this?
SFX: Basa
Miki: This will be fine.
SFX: Muku!
Everyone: !

43.
Noriko: Wh…what is this? It’s distur—bing.
“Makoto”: (singing) Go—go—fight. Justice is 365 days; you can’t rest. Hidzuke Sentai Karenda—
(TN: It’s sort of common knowledge by now that Makoto seems to have an obsession with Super-Sentai and always seems to be connected to a parody of that years’ Super-Sentai series. As mentioned before, the Super-Sentai for 1996 was the (itself a parody) automobile-themed Sentai series (and series that aired just before Nube on TV-Asahi) “Gekisou Sentai Carranger”. (“Exciting-Running Sentai Carranger”) Well while the base for the name is the “Kaa” that is typically interpreted as “Car”, the parody here ends up not just using the “ka” but ends up changing the word entirely, making it instead of “Carranger” into “Karenda” or “Calendar”. Thus likewise the whole title of this fake sentai series is “Hidzuke Sentai Karenda” or “Date Sentai Calendar”; which is silly but somewhat clever…though I doubt it would ever be as crazy as Carranger is…or as infamous as the MMPR series made from Carranger: Power Rangers Turbo…)
Kyouko: Miki, you’re showing this mischief to us…
Miki: Shh, quiet and watch!
Dog: Wan wan (Woof woof)
“Makoto”: Hii, it’s a large dog.
“Makoto”: Hii hii, I’ll hide in this refrigerator in the trash dumping ground.
“Makoto”: Ah, it won’t open.
Miki: Nube!
SFX: Shuuu
Nube: ……This is terrible!

44.
Nube: He didn’t fall into the irrigation ditch, but this too is dangerous! Hurry!
Sign: Doumori Trash Processing Plant
Nube: Please hold on!
SFX: Gagaga
SFX: Gacha

45.
Nube: Dummy, what were you doing.
Makoto: Wa—h.
Miki: Hahahaha, you’ve done. This too is thanks to me and my Mishige.
Nube: Yes, you’ve done well, Miki.
Nube: But I’ll take that.
Miki: Ultimately…
Nube: It changed into a youkai as it was being used by humans…in the end, I thank it for its use to humans…it will have many allies here.
Nube: You should…sleep at ease…

46.
Nube-sensei’s
(Useless) SUPPLEMENTAL EXPLANATION

#9: Mishige

Mishige (Hansu) is a Majimun (Mamono) that is said to exist on Okinawa.

As a variety of Tsukumogami, a shamoji that has been used by humans for many years possesses spiritual power and comes to seem to turn about as it moves on its own. Its action is primarily said to be doing “Moasobi” en mass at a trash dumping ground in the middle of the night.

On Okinawa, there is also said to be a “Nabike” (Shakushi) as a youkai that resembles it other than that.
(TN: A few things:
1. There were a few terms here that ended up being written both in Japanese and Okinawan dialects. I ended up keeping the Japanese here for a couple of them, which have the following comments:
-Mishige – also has a reading of “Hansu” but refers to the shamoji youkai
-Majimun – A type of “evil spirit” as stated in Okinawan, with the term “Mamono” also having a similar meaning in “apparition” or “demon”.
-“Nabike” – The Okinawan term for “shakushi”, a bamboo ladle used similarly as a shamoji for rice serving.
2. A “Moasobi” (also known as “Moashibi”, is a type of Okinawan dance; couldn’t find too much more on it at this point)

TN: Well, I think I can finally use this as our music for the explanation:

(I really need to see this sentai...it just looks so insane and crazy and doesn't take itself seriously...then again I need to get to some other series and finish what I haven't done yet!)

Is it just me or was this whole chapter mostly a waste of time building up to the "reason" to actually use it at the end? I get Miki having fun with the Mishige for most of the chapter, but the whole thing just felt like it was an excuse to have her cause mischief, then unexpectedly and inadvertently save the day by giving it to the right person at the right time. There were some moments that made me almost forget how cliche this had gotten, such as Nube's investigation to find out how Miki took it and...well, Kyouko's little experiment at breast expansion, but it all just felt like build-up to something that felt rather contrived to make the Mishige be used for good before it went away. Yeah, it saved Makoto's life ultimately but there really was no tension or build-up except "Miki randomly throws it to Makoto...who just so happens gets locked in a fridge and sent to a treatment plant." I know there probably isn't any other way to make it work out but somehow the chapter was just a few themes we've seen before not really being handled as well as usual. (and...don't get me started on Kaneda's bit...did we really need to see it go to the bathroom like that?)
