Dreams are mysterious phenomenons, made even worse by the lack of control...or the potential for horrible nightmares! But with a dream that can determine your fate, can one find a way to have a good night's sleep?

#165: The Great First-Dream Operation!

133.
(TN: As I mentioned in the last Supplemental, “First Dream” or “Hatsuyume” is a phenomenon in Japan where luck and fortune for the year is determined by the very first dream that is had [and remembered]. This opening page actually shows some of the “First Dreams” that were held by Nube’s class leading to…well the actual chapter…and something else I went into with the supplemental)
Nube’s Dream: Extra Large Shiruko
(TN: As I mentioned prior, “Shiruko” is a type of soup that is made of red azuki beans and served cold…though in this case, it looks like Nube got a hot bowl)
Hiroshi’s Dream: Champion
Kyouko’s Dream: Miss Doumori
(TN: …with big boobs)

134.
Servant: Mademoiselle
Miki: What is it?
Miki: Well, this is beautiful Mt. Fuji…
SFX: Zaza—n…

135.
Bodybuilder: Mademoiselle.
Miki: Well, a hawk.
Miki: Ara, an eggplant.
Miki: One: Fuji, Two: Hawk, Three: Eggplant…u—n: ha-ppi-ne-ss……
(TN: In the first-dream phenomenon, it is said that by seeing Mt. Fuji, a hawk and an eggplant [which is old folklore some connect to Tokugawa Ieyasu and his connection to Suruga but it isn’t really certain and could go further back] in your first dream, you will have the best luck that year…though Miki shouldn’t count considering what her hawk was…)

136.
Miki: What you just heard was my first dream.
Blackboard: 3-minute speech: Theme: “First Dream”
Hiroshi: That was a weird dream.
Miki: What are you saying? Since long ago, if you had a dream where first Fuji, second a hawk and third an eggplant appear, that’s a good thing.
Miki: Right, Nube?
Nube: Um…yes, seems so. (However…)
Miki: Hmph: this perfect lucky dream can’t be seen by the average person. With this, my luck this year will be excellent.
(TN: Miki merely doesn’t say “excellent” but “Daikichi” or “Excellent Luck”)
Nube: Um—well, we’ll go to the next. Next is Makoto.

137.
Nube: ? What’s wrong, Makoto?
Makoto: I haven’t had my first dream.
Nube: We’ve already had 20 days since the New Year. You would have had about one dream.
Makoto: I haven’t had it.
Nube: Not yet—you’re just lying.
Makoto: If I haven’t had it, I haven’t had it!
Nube: ………

138.
Makoto: Miki-chan, just a moment…
Miki: Why are you calling me to behind the school building?
Mkaoto: I…I have to make a request…
Miki: …..Understood……
Makoto: Wh…what are you doing?

139.
Miki: Eh? That was wrong?
Makoto: It’s wrong. What were you doing?
Miki: It was a joke. So, what business is it?
Makoto: OK…in truth, I want to be taught by you the method of having a good dream.
Makoto: Since New Year’s Day, I’ve been gazing at nightmares all~~along. At this rate,t this year will come to be an extremely bad year.
Caption: Picture of Waking Up the Morning of New Year’s Day
Miki: What? Leave that to me. You’ll have good dreams. (Gahhahaha)
Makoto: Thank you. I want to have the eggplant dream.
SFX: Ban ban
SFX: Gara gara
Sign: Gym Storehouse
Miki: Fufu

140.
Miki: Well, lay down on this good mat and sleep.
Makoto: OK…but I’ll have another nightmare…
Miki: First the most popular method is “Sleep Fixing”. You’ll sleep many times until you have a good dream.
Makoto: Uuh, that’s somewhat easy-going.
Miki: I’ll even attack and hit you a few times with a wooden pole of awkwardness. At any rate, sleep.
(TN: The “wooden pole of awkwardness” is actually in Japanese “Heta no Teppou”; “Heta” is “unskilled” or “poor” or “awkwardness”, while “teppou” refers to a wooden pole used in practice by sumo to fix any mistakes that they make)
Makoto: U…understood…
Makoto: So…something’s coming.

141.
SFX: Dodododo
Makoto: Ugya~~
SFX: Gaba!
Makoto: Haa haa haa haa
Miki: One more time.
SFX: Pako!!

142.

SFX: Pako!
Makoto: Hiiii!!
Miki: Once more
SFX: Doka
Makoto: Gya--!
SFX: Baki
Miki: Once more!
SFX: Gusha
Makoto: Gue—
Miki: Once more
SFX: Bako!
Makoto: Dowa—
Miki: You’re stubborn~~
SFX: Ze—ze—
Makoto: E…enough already. This is getting ridiculous…
Miki: There’s nothing we can do: Method #2.
SFX: Gasagoso

143.
Miki: The Nightmare Cruise Boat--! (In the voice of Ooyama Nobuyo)
(TN: Nobuyo Ooyama is a voice actress best known as the first and most notable voice actress of the character Doraemon in the long-running anime)
Makoto: It’s merely an origami boat.
Miki: With this, you write the contents of the nightmares that you saw earlier
Makoto: Like this?
Boat Writing:
I was chased by a dinosaur
I came to be eaten by an octopus
Miki: What remains is to float the boat on the river and to chant “Return to Hades, Return to Hades”.
(TN: “Hades” refers to “Meikai”, the Japanese “realm of the dead”)
Makoto: Return to Hades, Return to Hades.
Miki: With that, the nightmares should disappear from your head.

144.
Miki: How do you feel?
Makoto: Well, I have a hunch that I’ll be having some good dreams.
Makoto: Uwaaaaa~~~Hieee~~
SFX: Gooo | Byuuu…
Miki: …That was no good too?
Makoto: I was scared. (Ze—ze—ha—ha--)
Miki: Al—right, then this time.
SFX: Gasa goso

145.
Miki: The Dream-Buying Note--!
Paper Money:
Top: Even the copy is a bank ticket
Center: One Billion Yen
Makoto: It’s a mere toy note.
Miki: This is a method handed down from Taoism but you sacrifice to God fake money like this and sell it for lucky dreams.
Miki: In Japan, you write it like this
Note Writing: Lucky Dreams
Miki: And burn it at a shrine or temple. With that, you’re paying money to god and are buying a good dream.
Oshou: You’re all in school.
Makoto: Waa, with that, I’ll have good dreams.

146.
Makoto: Gieeee!!
SFX: Goooo
Miki: ………
Makoto: U—n u—n I’ll die~~
Miki: It’s already coming to a head! If it’s come to this, I’m flinging myself at this enemy!
(TN: Miki’s “flinging myself at this enemy” is actually in Japanese “Nikudansen”, which is an expression for “warfare soldiers fling themselves at the enemy”, literally translating into a “human bullet battle”)
SFX: Ba!
Miki: Sleeping Together with Huge Boobs---(heart)
Makoto: U—h u—h
Miki: There isn’t a man who doesn’t have good reams with this.

147.
Miki: Uhu—h ahu—h
Nube: What~~Miki of my class is in the gym storehouse!?
Kyouko: She’s finally done it…
Nube: Miki—
SFX: Dadadadada
SFX: Gara
Nube: Oh…Oh my goodness, what are you pulling?
(TN: I’m not really sure if I translated this bit by Nube right, but he starts off by saying “Omahera”, which really had no real meaning and sort of was translated as “oh my goodness’ mostly because of Nube’s expression of shock to…well, what Miki is doing)
SFX: Puru puru puru…
Miki: Ah, Nube, Makoto said he wants to have good dreams. I’m helping him out.
SFX: Gyuu

148.
Makoto: Guwaa—
SFX: Gyuu gyuu
“Ape”: Uho uho uho uhoho—
Nube: …He is having some amaz—ing nightmare—but…
Miki: What, it didn’t do it, that--!
SFX: Bako!
Nube: Understood, and with that you asked Miki…that was the worst personal selection, Makoto.
Makoto: I think so.
Miki: What? Excuse me!
Nube: Hahah, that is silly, Makoto. Having decided the luck of a year with a first dream is mere tradition.
Makoto: But.

149.
Nube: Having these nightmares is when you have good dreams all along, you over worry just about those and you can’t relax your spirit even in the midst of sleeping. That’s the source.
Nube: Sleep one more time. You’ll be fine this time. I’ll be leading you.
Makoto: U…understood……
SFX: Su
Kyouko: Wh…what are you doing?
Nube: Well, look.

150.
Nube: The source of the production of the nightmares is that he can’t relax his heart and one other thing. Namu Daiji Daihi Kyuugu Kyuunan…
SFX: Oooooooh…

151.
Nube: Because there were the thoughts of wandering spirits who don’t have any influence on him constantly entering into his tired brain. The reason is that Makoto easily has nightmares because he’s worried about being small.
Nube: I’ll help him this time but…if a typical person does exercises, forgets small worries and goes to sleep, they’ll have good dreams without taking the effect of these spirits.
Kyouko: Ah, he’s smiling.
Miki: He’s finally having a good dream. He really is a person who causes trouble.
Bag: Fukubukuro
(TN: The “Fukubukuro” or “lucky bag”, is a Japanese New Years custom where merchants sell grab bags with mysterious contents for discount. As popular as it is, it usually is just a way for stores to get rid of old, unwanted merchandise. The “luck” of the Fukubukuro is more with the chance that something really lucky, like an expensive item or a trip far away, is in the bag)

152.
Nube-sensei’s
(Useless) SUPPLEMENTAL EXPLANATION

#13: Dinosaurs

The era when dinosaurs lived was a period from approximately 250 million years ago to 65 million years ago. This period was called the “Mesozoic Era”, divided in order of oldest into the “Triassic”, “Jurassic” and “Cretaceous”. The terrain was completely different from now, with the continents in a formation of a huge primeval continent with the name of “Pangaea”, without having been completely split.

On this huge continent, also in the seas and likewise in the air, dinosaurs flourished in a position they obtained on the Earth. However, they went extinct at the end of the Cretaceous and now not even one among them has survived. Whether the source of the extinction was the falling of a giant meteorite may not have the hardware. However, since dinosaurs of near 700 species went extinct without one remaining, it certainly was a major disaster unspeakable to the imagination.

I can’t explain in this extremely small space about what’s related to dinosaurs. Please investigate in an illustrated encyclopedia for the details.

(TN: A few things:
1. First of all, again this has to do with a later chapter…but actually it doesn’t have to do with this chapter or the one that comes next but the one after that one. So just keep some of this in mind as you read it.
2. While Pangaea is the most notable of the supercontinents during the existence of Earth, it actually is the most recent, mostly due to the knowledge of its activities being seen around Earth. The continent existed for a period through the rise of dinosaurs 250 million years ago, with the period about 175 million years ago being around the point when it started to break apart towards the continents on Earth today.
3. What caused the extinction of dinosaurs in what’s called the “Cretaceous-Tertiary extinction event” has been disputed for years due to various evidence on what happened 65 million years ago. Many factors including meteors and volcanoes are seen as many factors leading to the mass extinction, but one of the most obvious examples of what could have happened is a meteor hitting an area around the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico in an area known as the Chicxulub Crater. Other aspects such as Deccan Traps and the regression of sea levels as well as multiple meteors are also seen as possible causes.
4. BTW: not all dinosaurs actually went extinct: certain flying dinosaurs actually survived the impact and would evolve into modern birds)

TN: First of all, it actually has taken several days for me to get this up sadly. I really should have done so sooner but things have just been crazy...and I've just forgotten things for some reason or another.

As for the chapter...well, it's sort of a chapter that has a message but...had to go about it in a roundabout way just to get to it. I get the whole idea of the chapter: Makoto was over-stressing on having a bad dream, making him have bad dreams due to being susceptible with the stress, sort of like a virus infecting a body that has become weakened due to being too stressed out. But unfortunately some of what it took to get to that point with Miki's "methods"...well, you can't help it that she tried but somehow you sort of knew from the failure of each one that she wasn't going to really help in any way, shape or form. Besides, if Makoto imagined her as a slobbering ape, you know something is completely off.
