Once, a human and yukionna fell in love, yet the Mountain God who created her challenged to kill her or bring her back, only to be repelled many times. But their greatest challenge ever begins when "his side" begins to get involved...

#170: Nube/Yukime: The Final Battle of Love!? (Beginning)

50.
“Voice”: This here is Ooyukimura, a mountain village of deep snow in Iwate Prefecture.
(TN: Iwate Prefecture is a prefecture near the northern tip of Honshu deep in Tohoku. It is the second-largest prefecture of Japan, after the island of Hokkaido)
Caption: In the Mountains of Iwate: Ooyukimura
Terada: Recently, there has been a mysterious strange disease that can’t be explained by medical science in this town. There are rumors that its origin may be a curse…
Caption: Reporter: Terada Akiko
(TN: I don’t know if I ever mentioned it but this reporter is the one we consistently see in this series as the main reporter of the manga)
Top Sign: Ooyukimura Community Center
Side Sign: Temporary Medical Clinic
People: Uuh~~…Uuuh~~…

51.
Terada: Hieee!!
“Voice”: Of course.
Jikuu: This is a Reishou..
SFX: Za
Caption: The Greatest Spiritualist of This Century: Mugenkai Jikuu
Terada: Ji…Jikuu-san, your appearance isn’t yet…
Jikuu: The Mountain God of this vicinity is angry and this catastrophe has been brought about to the villagers. This is a terrible disaster.
Terada: ? ?
Jikuu: What is the source of this god’s anger? Namu Daiji Daihi Kyuugu Kyuunan

52.
Jikuu: !!
(TN: Yeah, Jikuu…your son…and that weird yukionna he’s been hanging around with)
Jikuu: …I know the origin……I’m going to Doumori…
Caption: Town of Doumori

53.
Nube: --And that’s the reason—understand—
Yukime: (heart)
Nube: --Because it is—
SFX: Kon
Nube: ----Um--…
SFX: Gon

54.
Nube: N…no, Yukime-kun, what’s your business?
SFX: Gara
Yukime: Teacher, you made a promise. Since today is Saturday, you’re taking me to any place I like…I couldn’t wait and came over here.
Nube: …I’m still in the middle of class but~~
Student 1: Hyu—hyu—a date?
Student 2: That’s hot.
Nube: Quiet. (To Yukime) Understood, understood. So, where do you want to go?
Yukime: That’s right~~Dinner while listening to a piano performance at an observation restaurant of a skyscraper that can see the Rainbow Bridge--…
(TN: The Rainbow Bridge is a bridge that crosses between the northern Tokyo Bay between Shibaura Pier and the waterfront of Odaiba. The bridge was finished in 1993 and got its name due to lamps placed on it that illuminate in various colors at night after collecting solar energy during the day.)
Nube: ………

55.
Nube: U—m, since that’s impossible, I’ll take it down a slight level: Gyoza and Chaashuu while listening to the songs of drunks at a stand-and-eat ramen shop beneath the train overhead on the side of the Doumori Shitamachi Bridge…
(TN: Nube brings up several things here that I sort of need to explain to understand the obvious “reduction” of Yukime’s dream:
-Gyoza, also known by the original Chinese name of “jiaozi”, is a pot sticker of Chinese origin usually with meat and vegetables in thin dough wrapped and sealed off with a certain ravioli-like shape.
-Chaashuu (the Chinese name: Char siu), also known as “barbequed meat” or “barbeque pork”, is a popular Cantonese pork-cooking method where shoulder pork is mixed with a special sauce that contains things such as honey, hoisin sauce, soy sauce and rice wine and then cooked.
-The “Shitamachi” part of the “Doumori Shitamachi Bridge” refers to a “downtown”/”Working Class” area)

Yukime: That’s pleasant! Let’s go quickly!
Nube: Waa—
Hiroshi: A—ah, she’s displaying that!
SFX: Ki—n ko—n ka—n ko—n
Kyouko: Ultimately she’s happy wherever she goes if she’s together with Nube, that Yukime-san…
Yukime: Quickly, quickly---!!
Nube: Please hold on: first I must go to the staff office.

56.
Yukime: Our dates up to now have been together with the students, but today it’s just the two of us for the first time…perhaps tonight will be a night to remember…somehow…
Yukime: No way, I’m so embarrassed when it’s the two of us~~!!
Box: I think you don’t remember, but Yukime speaks in Tohoku-ben when she’s aroused. (Consult Manga Vol. 7)
(TN: Once again, as stated, Yukime speaks in Tohoku-ben, which can get really difficult for me to translate. Therefore I chose to just leave it as if she was speaking normally and how it was translated as opposed to the dialect Yukime entered)
SFX: Piki Paki Piki
Nube: Wa—
Nube: Trying to kill me?
Yukime: Sorry, I just…
SFX: Gara…
Nube: !!

57.
Jikuu: You have that foolish look as usual. Waste teacher.
Katsuya: Is…isn’t that Mugenkai Jikuu--! He’s famous on TV!
Principal: I got his autograph.
Kyouko: Is there some reason this guy is with Nube…
Nube: Why did you come here…
Jikuu: I have business with you and…that girl. Principal, I will borrow the conference room next door.
Nube: What exactly are you…
SFX: Pisha…
SFX: Ja

58.
Jikuu: Haa!!
SFX: Gotsu
SFX: Baki
Nube: What are you doing!
Yukime: Teacher!?
Nube: It can’t be, Yukime will be…!?
Jikuu: Yes.

59.
Jikuu: That youkai will be…that yukionna will be…erased…
Nube: Why!? In truth, Yukime is a youkai but…she’s had a harmless existence living with humans.
Jikuu: You fools…by leaving the mountain and living in the human world…the Mountain God of her old home became angry…
Jikuu: And is exerting a curse on the people of the nearby mountain villages…
Yukime: Wh…what, it’s my fault…
Jikuu: Yes, yukionna. You’ve broken the law of the mountain; as long as you live in this town, the people of that village will be tormented by the curse.

60.
Nube: Yukime.
Yukime: Nueno-sensei…It’s my fault that many people are……if I did that, then I…
Nube: Cease that; you’re not going to fall into his hands. That man is a dirty man whose aim is monetary value.
Nube: He plans on appeasing the curse of the Mountain God…and seize much from the villagers…he also makes money from the TV channel. The quick-and-easy method would be to kill you, Yukime…That’s why he came here: it’s all aiming for monetary value.
Nube: It’ll be fine. I…will think of a way to appease the anger of the Mountain God without having you killed…don’t worry.

61.
Jikuu: Fu…that’s impossible. As long as that yukionna isn’t killed, the anger of the Mountain God won’t be cleared.
Nube: Silence!
Nube: Even if she’s a youkai…if you say you’re going to kill Yukime, who possesses the warm heart of a human, at any cost, then you’ll fight me!
Jikuu: Well…even if your opponent is
Nube: Even if it’s you, my actual father!!

62.
Yukime: Fa…father…!?
Kyouko: That can’t be……
Miki: It’s a scoop.
Hiroshi: Jikuu is…Nube’s…
Jikuu: ……You’ll regret this…
Jikuu: Youngster…
Jiku: Fudo! Giou! Sanbou! Mari Shiten! Ongyouhou
Caption Box:
Ongyouhou: A high-level secret art seen in Shugendou: the power of a Bushin of Tenkai descends into yourself by, so you say, god-possession, making you the incarnation of a half-god, half-human.
(TN: There are quite a few aspects here that we’ve got to get into in order to understand what’s going on here and what was just explained, so I’ll try to list them off as best as I can:
-“Ongyouhou” has a literal translation of “Hidden-Form Method” and essentially is what was stated here: taking the incarnation of a Bushin.
-“Bushin”, which literally translates into “God of Military Arts”, will further be explained in the next Supplemental section.
-“Tenkai” isn’t quite “Heaven” but an “upper world” or “heavenly world”, literally the “upper region”. It’s interpretation depends on the translation, whether it be “heaven” in a figurative sense or “space” in a literal one)

63.
Jikuu: Ha—
SFX: Kaka
Nube: Ku…
Jikuu: Meisuke, it’s over. I am greater in spiritual power.
SFX: Bari bari
SFX: Bari bari
Nube: Who is going to do what is told by you?

64.
Nube: Dad…you planned on living by throwing away your human heart forever…
SFX: Bari bari bari
Nube: The you of long ago…was a spiritualist who would save people on good will without taking any money, even if we were poor…You were my pride. But…when mother became sick…and died in poverty without even money to buy her medicine……
Nube: You changed. You became a dead man of money who would do exorcisms at exorbitant costs…in truth, if we had even money at that time, mother may have ended up not dying…if we had the money to the extent you do now…
Nube: But…did you think mother was delighted in this!?
Jikuu: …………
Nube: Mother…loved the you that saved people with a kind heart, even if…even if we were poor…

65.
Jikuu: !!
Nube: She loved you---!!

66.
SFX: Bashuuu
Jikuu: Guha…the power of the Oni…
Nube: I’m…going to the Mountain God. And then I’ll somehow get his forgiveness about Yukime…I’ll quiet its anger.
Jikuu: It’s useless. It does not listen to what is said by humans. In front of the Mountain God, the power of you…no, of people is equal to trash. You’ll die.
Nube: …..Even so, I’m going. I will save Yukime, even betting my life…

67.
Students: Nube, Nube, what is it? Are you two standing out again?
Nube: Don’t worry. I’ll certainly come home.
Students: Nube. Nube…
Narrator: And thus, Nube and Yukime went towards the home of the Mountain God, by no means knowing that a sad farewell was waiting there…

68.
Nube-sensei’s
(Useless) SUPPLEMENTAL EXPLANATION

#15: Bushin

Buddhism by nature prohibits the destruction of life (killing living things). In spite of that, there are Buddha who administer war that massacre in great number. This is because of the absorption of gods of other pre-existing religions with the process of the widening of Buddhism into a world religion. For example: Brahman, the chief god of Brahmanism, became Bonten of Buddhism; similarly Saraswati of Brahmanism became Benten. This is the manner where Shiva, the God of Destruction of Hinduism became Acala (Fudou Myouou), Indra the Lightning God became Sakra (Taishakuten) and Vishnu is Vaisravana (Bishamonten). Even in Japan, this sort of phenomenon has occurred: there was a period where even Amaterasu Oomigami and Susanoo no Mikoto were thought of in forms where they were personified as Buddha. (This was called the theory of Honji Suijaku)

On top of being based on this sort of truth, let me explain about the Bushin, which were introduced in this chapter.

First of all there is Acala, but it came to have origin on an Indian God as afore-mentioned. It is famous in Japan, but it isn’t very high in social position in the world of Buddha. It seems to be modeled on a form of a Dravidian (a former inhabitant of India), which came to be servants of the Aryans. Next is Zaou Gongen. This is said to be the personification of Maitreya (Miroku Bousatsu/Bodhisattva Miroku), a god of Honji Suijaku. It is a god who En-no-Gyouja perceived on Mt. Kinpu. Sanbou-Koujin (Koujin) is a god who had faith through Shugendou, but presently has become the god of the kitchen. Marici (Marishiten) is the child of Bonten and is an Indian god. She has faith with sumo as a god of martial arts.

Aside from those, Hachiman Daibousatsu has faith widely as a Bushin. It had faith with all military commanders (who called themselves) descendents of Genji for successive generations (starting with Minamoto-no-Yoshitomo and including Takeda Shingen, Tokugawa Ieyasu, etc.) because it had the belief of noted samurai Minamoto Yoshiie (Active in the Zenkunen & Gosannen Wars). Since he too is a god of Honji Suijaku, it doesn’t exist as a Buddha outside Japan.

(TN: We’ve got a lot of ground to cover with this entry due to all the gods mentioned here and their connection to other religions and, ultimately, Buddhism. So shall we get started?
1. “Bonten” is actually the name of several beings in Buddhist myth, all of whom were identified as Deva. While the Brahman of Brahmanism was seen as the creator of the universe, early Buddhism likewise considered various Brahma existing, but all connected to one Buddha. The assumed Brahaman that ended up as the main one is “Baka Brahman” (“Crane-Brahman”), an immortal being who believes in the permanence of the world and attempts to defy the Buddha with his beliefs, regardless of others saying otherwise.
2. Saraswati, existing in Brahmanism and Hinduism, is the consort of Brahman and the mother of the Vedas, as well as the goddess of knowledge, music and art. In Buddhism, she became a guardian who upholds Gautama Buddha’s teachings and guides practitioners to assistance. In Japan, she has a name of “Benzaiten” (or simply “Benten”), where she continues to possess elements of her origin being a goddess of flowing objects such as water, words and music (and possessing a Japanese lute) and as a protector diety.
3. Holding on Shiva/Acala/Fudou Myouou until we get to the Bushin, Indra is seen in Hinduism as the god of Devas and lord of heavens, making him the god of War, Storms and Rainfall. In Buddhism, Sacra is the ruler of “Trayastrimsa”, the fifth heaven and the highest still connected to the world (some say the Buddhist “Mount Olympus”) and replaced by another Sakra when one dies due to his mortality.
4. Vishnu in Hindu myth is the supreme god/soul of the Vaishnavite tradition of Hinduism, the all knowing, all supporting being and one who has taken many avatars to protect and save mankind including, surprisingly, Buddha. In Buddhist lore, he is known as Vaisravana, the guardian of the northern end of Mt. Sumer and the chief of the “Four Heavenly Kings” of Buddhist lore. In Japan, he is known as Bishamonten, the armor-clad god of warfare who possesses a spear in one hand and a pagoda in another.
5. The “Honji Suijaku” was a religious terminology in Japan (literally standing for “trace of original ground”) used by Buddhists to personify Japanese “kami” as local manifestation of Buddhist deities. Both Buddhist and kami sides form a bond known as a “gongen” allowing for the Buddha to be manifested as a kami. The usage of this theory allowed not just gods but even real historical figures like Kuukai and Shoutoku Taishi to be seen as Buddhist incarnations. Though it was never systemized, it was accepted until the re-establishment of Shinto with the regained power of the emperor in the Meiji Restoration.
6. Moving into the Bushin as mentioned, the first one mentioned was Shiva, notable as the Hindu god of destruction and transformation. In Vajrayana Buddhism, Shiva becomes “Acala”, the best known of the “Five Wisdom Kings of the Womb Realm”. He is the destroyer of the delusional and the protector of Buddhism, immovable due to his immovability to fall for any carnal temptation. In Japan, where he is called Fudou Myouou (Immovable Wisdom King), he is one of the “Thirteen Buddha” where he holds a sword and lariat, clad in rags, two fangs pointed in opposite directions and a braid on the side of his head.
7. As mentioned in the explanation, Shiva’s incarnation as “Fudou Myouou” refers to him as “Dravidian”, the people who are known to live in primarily in the southern area of India as well as certain other areas of the nation, Pakistan and Sri Lanka. Indians of Southern India are considered Dravidian, compared to the north Indians who have genetics with the Aryan Indians. The Aryans were notable for taking India from the Dravidians and conquering over them and forcing their will upon them. It was the Aryans who set up the infamous caste system of the nation and took the “dark skinned” as slaves.
8. “Zaou Gongen” is seen as a tantric deity: blue-black in color with hair on end, grimacing and with three eyes, while holding a vajra in one hand. As stated, he is tied to En-no-Gyouja/Odzunu and has connections to Shugendou.
9. The god Zaou Gongen personifies is “Maitreya” , a bodhisattva who will appear on earth, achieve complete enlightenment and teach the pure dharma, akin to a Buddhist Messiah who appears when Dharma is forgotten on Earth.
10. Sanbou-Koujin is a form of the Koujin, the god of the Hearth, who possesses eight heads and six-or-eight arms. His name is in reference to the “three jewels” (Sanbou) of Buddhism: Buddha, Dharma and Sangha. As stated prior, he currently is more well known as a god of the kitchen and the stove.
11. Marici is a goddess who is one of the 20/24 Heavenly Celestials of Buddhism usually seen on top of a sow. In Japan as “Marishiten”, she was adopted by the samurai as a protector and patron and was worshipped as a means to achieve an increased spiritual level before the adoption of Zen Buddhism. She would have her mantra invoked at sunrise by samurai to achieve victory and later became one of “three deities” of the Edo period as a goddess of wealth and prosperity alongside Benzaiten and Daikokuten.
12. Hachiman could be seen as a purely Japanese god of syncrestic formation, but some say he actually had origin in Korea. Though stated as the god of war, he is more the tutelary god of warriors and the divine protector of Japan. After Minamoto no Yoshiie took his name when coming of age, he became the guardian of the Minamoto clan and spread to become the guardian and worshipped by all samurai.
13. The two wars mentioned here were crucial wars that Minamoto no Yoshiie was tied to. The “Zenkunen” (Early 9 Years) war lasted between 1051 to 1063 in Mutsu province (it was called “9 years) due to the ceasefires and peace that occasionally occurred where he took control from the Ainu who previously ruled the area. The “Gosannen” (Late 3 Years) war took place from 1086 to 1089 as a means to quell dissidence within the Kiyohara Clan.)

TN: It's been forever since we've actually had a proper "two-part story" in Nube, with the last time way back with Tamamo's team up with the giant Remugyo way back in vol. 2...it's strange it would take so long for another longer tale to emerge like this, but of course something as complex as dealing with both Jikuu and the Mountain God requires extra time to give it the respect it deserves. With that said, it really is tough to say if Nube finally got through to Jikuu this time regarding what happened regarding the death of his mother/Jikuu's wife/Mrs. Nueno, but the problem is that it probably just took so long for him to really hear her side of the story to force it to come to this. The biggest key regarding why Mr. Nueno went corrupt and mutated into Jikuu is just his own guilt regarding the death of his wife and the money required for her treatment. It was him that worried too much about saving her thinking that it was required and that he needed to have her regardless of cost. But somehow he never got the words from Mrs. Nueno herself: she seemed satisfied and almost accepting of death, thus leading to the words she said about the love he had for helping those with nothing in return. If he heard those words instead of just letting them pass by, maybe he wouldn't have been corrupted to the point of becoming Jikuu...but it's tough to say now. The chapter really just feels like it sort of shows the concept of "uncaring fathers", with one being a complete jerk who only wants maximum profit and the other...being a Mountain God who will do anything to get back or kill Yukime. This will all climax next time...but let me say this first: the whole "school invasion" scene Yukime does at the start has to be my favorite scene with her in forever...no longer moping or bragging about her increase or any of that: she's just like the cute sweet strange Yukime we all came to love! Took long enough for her to return to why we love her...
