Watch Out, Girls of 5-3: The Skirt-Chasing Youkai Yamako
-> RTS Page for Hell Teacher Nube 173
There are many different approaches regarding love and marriage, but for some it could be a matter of survival. Unfortunately...just because they want some...doesn't mean they will get it from the females around them!
#173: Watch Out, Girls of 5-3: The Skirt-Chasing Youkai Yamako
109.
Voice: Are you fine with this, son?
Caption: This is…within the forest of a certain mountain recess—
“Father”: We…in short, the Yamako, youkai as called by humans, are born only males.
(TN: There really isn’t too much I can say since the chapter is about them, but I do wish to state that “Yamako” is a youkai from China that came to Japan in the Edo period)
“Father: That’s why we’ve abducted human women and give birth to children for generations. That is law.
“Father”: Well, you too have reached marriageable age. Change to a human and abduct a human woman.
(TN: “Marriageable age” is actually the Japanese word “Toshigoro”, which has other meanings including “age of puberty”)
“Son”: Understood, father.
“Father”: Go!
SFX: Zatsu!

(Title page…this is not going to end well, is it…I say he ends up with Matsui)

Nube: U—m, for that reason, here’s your long-awaited transfer student.
Girls; Wa—

Kenji: He—y, I’m Kaku Kenji. Nice to meet you.
(TN: Just a peculiar note, the “Kaku” of his name is the same kanji as the one used for “Yamako”)
(TN: Miki’s flag appears to be “welcome” in Chinese, just like Kyouko’s is the Japanese “welcome”)
113.
SFX: Mukyo--!
Kenji: What dreamy girls. Oh my pretty baby. All of you are like a flock of flamingos playing in a beautiful lake.
Hiroshi: Ahaha, what is he?
Kenji: I’m surrounded by these pretty Juliets, I as Romeo am extremely happy.
Kenji: This is my feelings. The girl who catches this rose may be tied with a red string to me…
(TN: The “red string” or “aka ito” refers to the “red string of fate” phenomenon in East Asia, where men and women are tied by a red string if tied to fall in love together)

Kyouko: Me too.
Hiroshi: Aah, that’s fine.
Hiroshi: Yo, transfer student. Can you join too?
Kenji: Uhyou—right right, they want to see my super plays. Ultimately, men are restricted in being sportsmen.
Voie: Here we go!!
Students: Haa—
SFX: Zubababa

Kenji: Ha!!
SFX: Doga
Hiroshi: Amazin—g, are you a genius?
Kenji: Obviously. I’ve done blood-stained special training in the mountains so it could be seen by the girls.
Kenji: How was I, babies? Did you see it--?

Kyouko: Hiroshi—that was skilled--!
Miki: Stand firm, hold on.

SFX: Ki—n ko—n ka—n ko—n
“Glasses Girl”: Me too—
Kenji: Uhyohyo, what’s that, babies—Is that what it is?
Kenji: Uhyohyo, understood: all will be solved in five minutes. Fufufu, are you delighted by that, baby? I’ve reached even the capabilities of a university graduate with correspondence education for if this day would come.
SFX: Ba ba ba ba ba
Hiroshi: Amazing—
Hiroshi, Katsuya & Makoto: Gloomy, gloomy
(TN: I really don’t know why those three would be “gloomy” for stealing Kenji’s work [since they all stink at math], but they did all say “usse” over and over, which had a close meaning of “gloomy” according to one source. This definitely has to be double checked)
Kenji: …
Yuka: We’ve got no choice: shall we apologize honestly?
“Glasses Girl”: Right.
Yuka & “Glasses Girl”: We’re sorry.

Girl 1: What will we do?
Girl 2: Let’s go to the entrance over there.
Kenji: Go ahead: I’m fine with you crossing on top of me, baby.
SFX: Bisha
Girl 1: Enough—I want to go home quickly yet
Girl 2: The entrance over there is far away.
Kenji: ………
119.
Hiroshi: Why…the girls are being cruel—to him.
Katsuya: They don’t understand his feelings of wanting to be liked…let’s comfort him.
Hiroshi: Hey, transfer student, don’t feel so down. Isn’t it like this--?
Hiroshi: Isn’t man face—
SFX: Pon
Katsuya: If you’re to say it, it’s “Man isn’t face”!
(TN: The joke that is being done here is in regards to the Japanese expression of “Ningen wa kao ja nai” or “Man isn’t face”. Hiroshi obviously messed it up, but in a way that was tough to get across in English. Instead of saying “Ningen wa kao ja nai”, he says “Ningen no kao ja nai”, which changes “Man isn’t face” to “You don’t have a man face”. The best way for this to come across and make the joke work was to have the play on words where Hiroshi switches “Man” and “isn’t”, thus turning “Man isn’t face” to “Isn’t man face”)
SFX: Hyu--…
120.
Kenji: He—y, baby, can—‘t we play cards together? I became an apprentice with a card shark for this day.
(TN: While Kenji does admit in Japanese that he wants to play “Trump”, which is Japanese for “a game of playing cards”, the person he admits that he’s apprenticed under in Japanese is “Trumpman”, a professional magician with a specialty on card tricks who appeared on the Fuji TV Travel/Quiz Show “Naruhodo! The World”)

(Useless) SUPPLEMENTAL EXPLANATION
#17: Variant Marriage
Among youkai, there are many examples that marry humans and give birth to descendants. The yukionna is such, and Abe no Seimei, a famous spiritualist of the Heian Period, has said to be of the mixed parentage of a youko and a human. There seems to be many situations where humans ask “Are the children who are born by such youkai? Are they human?”
Well then Yamako, which was introduced in this chapter, is a kind of youkai who does a variant marriage. But in the situation of Yamako, the children aren’t human, they become youkai. Further, they only have males. This can be interpreted as those born are just all males, but the explanation is that among the children that are born, the females become human and just males become youkai. If you think as such, since Yamako were former humans who changed into youkai with a sudden variation, their genetics are handed down to just males with a sex-linked inheritance (an inheritance that is handed down to just males, or just females)
(TN: A couple things:
1. The title of this Supplemental in Japanese is “Irui Konin”; “Irui” was the toughest part to figure out but it should pretty much be interpreted by the Japanese meaning it typically has of “variety”, thus why I translated it into a “variant marriage”. [since it’s not a typical marriage situation with the Yamako’s genetics changing males into youkai and females to humans, as well as the “abduction” factor.
2. While much of the history of Abe no Seimei is known and recorded in Japanese history, there still have been many myths and legends that erupted around him making him greater than such, akin to British mage Merlin. One of the most notable is that his mother was Kuzunoha, a kitsune spirit and that he was placed under Kamo no Yasunori, a divinatory of the Heian court, to prevent her evil powers from corrupting him and giving him a proper human life.)
TN: I really doubt Kenji knew or even cared that his human disguise looked pathetic or just as weird and strange as you can get. He probably had such limited connection and feel for humans that he just put on the first disguise he could think of and that ended up making him get screwed. But hey, he had a lot of heart regardless...sure his true self is a tad too bishonen, but somehow there are those who look beyond looks in finding true love. I know the "over-pervy gentleman" bit was probably made to be intentional, but I sort of did wish we got some true compassion from one of the girls from the class to all he was doing...even if it probably would have been a bit of a rerun of the Nureonago incident where a beautiful youkai ended up with a strange-looking man. (an ubergeek but still sort of strange like Kenji was) In some ways I think Noriko did feel like she wasn't as connected in repulsion like the other girls from how I read her, but she seemed to be more reserved on love as we've seen in a previous chapter compared to a lot of the other females in the class. On the other hand, I did really like the camaraderie Kenji did form with Hiroshi and Katsuya (and Nube...sort of) in the whole situation even without fully knowing or understanding what was happening...and even afterwards. With as many times the youkai seeming to find help from a female like Kyouko, having the females be repulsed and the males doing their best to help their "friend" get along even with his cluelessness was a nice change in pace. Oh...and as minor as it was, I did sort of like the nice touch of using a few other girls in the class besides the main ones for the incident, particularly Yuka's biggest role since her first appearance. (well probably her only major role since her first appearance...when you're lower on the totem pole than even Shizuka or Matsui, you know that someone really has a hard time using you or just keeping you as a BG character)
