Hell Teacher Nube 178
It’s – Dan – Ger – Ous: The Training Simulator

Taking care of someone younger than you is difficult, always trying to strive to making them the best. Katsuya has his responsibilities with his little sister, but a unique incident may give him the chance to make her...the greatest ever!?

Manami: I finally bought this game.
Game: Ojousama Maker (Refined-Lady/Princess Maker)
(TN: OK, this game, and likewise this chapter, is going to need a bit of explanation: the name of the game is literally in Japanese “Ojousama Maker”, with “Ojousama” generally being a term used for a lady of a high-social position, whether it be a girl or a woman dependant on age. It can also be used in reference to a titled official such as a princess or a queen. Of course, the fact that it can be used for “princesses” sort of leads to the other aspect: the game, and thus this chapter, is actually a parody of the popular mid-90s video game series “Princess Maker”, created by the company GAINAX. [who is more well known for their anime output with things as varied as “Nadia: Secret of Blue Water”, “Neon Genesis Evangelion” and “Tengen Toppa Gurren-Lagann”…though remember “Evangelion” since that will get its own little reference in a later volume.] In the game, with the original released in 1991, you play the charge of a young girl and raise her through her puberty years into becoming a lady, with every decision and choice you make determining the path she takes in her life in the end and, thus, the many different endings determining her final path after she is raised. What this has to do with this chapter…well, we’ll get to that)
Manami: It was bought by the two of us, but it’ll be played first by you, big brother.

(Useless) SUPPLEMENTAL EXPLANATION
#21: Mandragora (Also Mandrake)
A poisonous plant which belongs to the eggplant family. It’s root splits into two strands like the legs of a human and it has hair growing on its surface. It’s made into a nostrum that is used in black magic and has been introduced widely to the Mediterranean coast from Persia.
According to Mr. Shibusawa Tatsuhiko, a literary person of France, the Mandragora was said to be produced from bodily fluids that Christ, who was put on the Cross, leaked just before he died. Due to this, it is thought that they grow at many places of executions of victims who were killed for false charges.
Due to the Mandragora being extraordinarily sensitive, it runs away when dirty people draw close to it. Due to this, you must purify the body before you can obtain a Mandragora. Further, it is said to be necessary to choose a lucky day, but I have an opinion that anytime is fine and it isn’t fixed.
If you luckily discover a Mandragora, then disseminate urine on it so you can weaken its magic power. Afterwards, dance a dance so the Mandragora gets stimulated. In Romania, it seems that they do it with the best way as naked women dancing while embracing each other as a duo.
After that, many times there is reason that you can dig it out, but generally it is dug up using a black dog. Of course, a dog will hear the shriek of the Mandragora and die, but you can’t ignore the corpse. You must courteously bury it. Also, fill in and bury up the hole after you’ve dug it up with bread, salt and one coin; this will be given to the God of the Earth.
Cleopatra, a person of history, was said to habitually use makeup made from these Mandragora. Likewise, it’s been said that Joan of Arc fought with a Mandragora root inserted in the valley of her bosom.
Furthermore, it goes without saying that modern botany has denied its existence.
(TN: A few things:
1. First of all, both “Mandrake” and “Mandragora” are appropriate names for the plant in question. The “Mandrake” is the common name of the plant, while “Mandragora” is the genus of the plant. The general one used for these purposes is “Mandragora Officinarum”, which looks like a parsnip and, as stated, is in the family Solanaceae, which is the family of nightshades which includes eggplant, potatoes, chili peppers and tomatoes.
2. Tatsuhiko Shibusawa, the pen name of Shibusawa Tatsuo, is a novelist, translator and a translator of French literature. Though he was a writer, he was mostly known as a translator of French works. He was notable as well for various essays about black magic, demonology and eroticism. He lived between 1928 to 1987.
3. It is somewhat well known about Cleopatra’s connection to Mandragora, even with her making a famous line about “drinking to forget time” when her beloved Marc Antony was away during the Shakespeare play “Antony and Cleopatra”.)
TN: (First of all, an explanation: yes this isn't the next chapter of Nube if you're following my scripts as I put them up. In truth, this chapter, like the Pawci one with Noriko a while back, is sort of a special chapter that would have been difficult for me to do or translate if I did it in a normal occasion. Considering there are three chapters that are ahead of this one (two more in vol. 20, plus the first chapter of vol. 21) and the fear that I wouldn't get to this until after a period of waiting where nothing would get done with Nube, I decided to move ahead and do this chapter as soon as possible on a day I knew I felt comfortable in doing as such. The three chapters that occur prior to this one will be done in their appropriate order and manner, while the next chapter after this (the Mandragora/Mandrake one inferred with the Supplemental this time) will come after those three have been completed, returning us to our regular Nube programming. With that said, just bare with me...and to those scanslating, please do the chapters in the appropriate order and try to disregard this part of the TN since it's mostly just an explanation of why I went out of order just this one time)
There are some manga chapters (Nube or otherwise) that just memorable for some reason or another: they're funny, they're scary, they're touching, they make you feel good or bad about something, and so on. But can a chapter of a manga...define an entire community? A community that for the most part wouldn't really have the means to show themselves otherwise or see themselves as reflected by such a mainstream manner? Well...this chapter in a way is one of those that define a community...one that I sort of can't quite go into but it is one that I am closely associated with. I think I can probably explain the community as such: they're into any sort of changes or transformations that involve girls mutating in form or personality in some form or another. These include becoming more violent or arrogant, getting fatter, getting more muscular, getting taller and bustier, age progression, age regression, changing into all sorts of strange animals (anthromorphic or actual), and so on. This community just finds interest in it for some reason or another, from just being interested in reactions to having some sort of fetish in regards to it to just being a freaky weirdo. As such, this chapter of Nube (for those who know of it, myself included) is a legendary one tied to such a community and, in some ways, a premier towards the various kinds of changes and transformations and alterations that go along with it. While the main one is age progression (and of course Manami's final form is legendary and makes one wish they had a little sister who became like that...heck, she even became cuter in her "older elementary student" form before that epic moment!), we get aspects of personality altercation, weight gain and muscle growth as well from it...and even a bit of "mental growth" with her nerdy form at that one point!
Obviously the main reason behind how or why this sort of chapter was possible is that it was for the most part a satire of the "Princess Maker" games and how it ended up altering Manami due to Nube fusing her soul with it. This phenomenon goes along with a lot of what we've been seeing in Nube as of this point in regards to the usage of recent fads and matters of Japanese pop culture in and around the mid-late 1990s, including that Purikura chapter a while back and the one with Izuna's pager. However, unlike a lot of chapters that end up trying to use these pop culture matters and just do it as a means to try to tell a tale to keep it modern or just mess around with two things to make them mesh into one (leading to a disaster...like the Purikura chapter), the concept for the chapter's existence and the story that it tells meshes perfectly together. The "Princess Maker" game wasn't merely just something to make it hip or modern but a storytelling measure used to talk about a big brother trying to take care of and create the perfect little sister, to the point that it goes way too far. (in good ways but let's not say how for Katsuya's sake) The game wasn't used as just something to make it relevant to the time, but as a storytelling means that meshed with the concept of taking care of and raising someone on your own and the trials and difficulties in making sure they do the right things and get what is needed to make them a success. When Katsuya failed with the game, it was satirized as Manami ending up on the wrong end of matters and forcing him to fix her in the best way possible. But when he succeeds...she becomes an 18-year old busty goddess...er, the perfect little sister.
Of course while the game in itself is the means for the chapter, the whole chapter itself is crux on Katsuya himself and his relationship to Manami both in real life and with the video game alterations he does to her. With as much as we've seen many other aspects of Katsuya's chapter so often in this series (his punkish, rebellious manner; his cowardly nature; his obsession with girls (and particularly Miki...whom I'm happy didn't show up this time because she would have been a massive distraction)), what we tend to forget and never gets as much attention outside this chapter (and Manami's first appearance back in vol 2) is that he is Manami's big brother...and technically her best guardian. (sure there are his parents...but somehow they didn't really seem to show much to me here and they're busy making a living) As the student in Nube's class who seems to act the oldest of all of them, he has a nature of being protective, loving and making sure his little sister gets what she needs and the care and attention that has to be taken. This responsibility doesn't tend to shine whenever he's in the class, but his sister is so important to him that he has to be on his best guard to make sure she has all that she can get to make herself grow up the right way. Likewise with the video game, Katsuya had a scenario in order to do as such with a virtual girl...but ended up altering his sister in the process. But it is through this game that he ends up doing what he already does for Manami but in a virtual means, using it as a way to not merely take care of her in his typical manner but through a way by which he can speed along her development as well as give her advantages only a video game can do in order to create the perfect sister. But of course when he does succeed...we see something that actually turns out to be seemingly surprising but not quite if you know of him enough. When Manami takes her final "18-year old busty goddess" form, he feels awkward and scared by her advances and by what he has done. If this girl was someone else like a complete stranger, then Katsuya would be slobbering all over her. But with it being Manami, he just feels like he's done something completely wrong, guilty by which what he has done because she has become so perfect that she feels less like a sister...and more like an obsessive girlfriend! Of course unlike a lot of modern manga who seem to thrive on having "little sisters fall in love with their big brother" (whether genetically related or not), Katsuya doesn't want anything to do with it. He loves Manami but not in a way that she can become older and more lustful...in fact, he wants to be the protective big brother, but through the game ended up changing her into a "literal" big sister! (due to it ending when the girl becomes 18) This is the ultimate consequence of the game and why it had to be righted: as perfect as Manami became, she became so perfect that she literally was about to do "that" with him...and as great as she is, that just feels so wrong. Little sisters can become hot and such, but dominating a big brother in that way can get a tad disturbed and somehow he had the sense to feel it.
I probably went on too long this time but the bottom line is this: this is probably one of my favorite Nube chapters in the entire series and, for the most part, I explained how in this. Sure some may find it strange...but hey, growing up can do that sort of thing. I sort of did wish Manami did get more outside this chapter (and the vol. 2 one) and particularly there was art or something that depicted her in that 18-year old form whether by Okano or elsewhere (though who knows if that really is how she'll be when she's 18...one can hope, though I do know she is a brunette as revealed by the more recent releases of the manga), but for the little she had, she was a memorable little sister and probably brought out much more in Katsuya than...well, some of the other stupid stuff he pulls. Now if only I could find a way to play "Princess Maker" myself...or at least "Ojousama Maker"...

Katsuya: You’re wrong. This really is something strange.
Nube: She’s just in a bad mood since its morning, I’m certain.
Katsuya: Wrong!
Voice: You guy~~
Nube: …Understood. This is strange.
Manami: Urua~~hahahahaha

Katsuya: OK OK, she’s been rectified.

Nube: Hey, Katsuya.
Kyouko: How is Manami-chan’s state?
Katsuya: She’s always getting 100s on her tests and is the best in her class in sports. Manami is a genius.
Kyouko: Ju…just a moment. Manami-chan, haven’t you become extremely taller?
Hiroshi: It…it’s true. She’s the average of an upper-grade!
(TN: “Upper grade” refers to the term of “Kougakunen” or an “upper grade in a school”. In this case, it’s that Manami is now as old/tall as an upperclassman of Doumori Elementary, as in a 5th or 6th grader like Nube’s class)
Kyouko: And yet…hasn’t—she changed for some reason!?
Hiroshi: Right: She’s so precocious suddenly…she also has this dignity; as if she’s a refined lady of somewhere…
Katsuya: That’s your imagination. You’re idiots, haha…
