There are some who possess powers of the spiritual from their youth, but there are others who claim they do...but don't know the full story, as one 6th-grader's bragging gets put to a test in proving she has power akin to Nube's...

(TN: Well…that’s “the way to make a spiritualist”…though I doubt you want to see this. So…on with the chapter)

9.
Voice: I can see spirits well.
“Headband Girl”: They say my spiritual feeling is strong. I could see them well since I was young.
(TN: “Spiritual feeling” is the Japanese word of “Reikan”, which typically has a translation of “Afflatus” or “inspiration”)
Student: Hey, are they in this classroom now too?
“Headband Girl”: Seems so……
“Headband Girl”: Huh!
SFX: Biku

10.
“Headband Girl”: Ah, no, it’s behind Keiko.
Keiko: Eh!? Eh!?
“Headband Girl”: Uwa—I can’t say a bit about that—
Keiko: Wh…what are you saying!
“Headband Girl”: It’s best that you don’t ask.
Keiko: Say it!
“Headband Girl”: It’s the spirit of a headless man that committed suicide.
Keiko: Noooo~~~!
SFX: Oooh--…
“Headband Girl”: That’s why I said it was best that you didn’t ask—
Keiko: Hi—
Boy 1: She’s amazing—that Ayuhara-san.
Boy 2: If she has spiritual feeling like that, she could be an apprentice with Nube-sensei.
Girl: Right, right: Nube-sensei, the charge of class 5-3 is a spiritualist.
Ayuhara: Ri…right.
SFX: Ki—n ko—n ka—n ko—n
Students: Ah, it’s class.

11.
Student 1: Now that you mention it, teacher is on break today.
SFX: Gata gata
Studen 2: They said that a replacement teacher was coming but…who is it?
SFX: Ka—n | Gara
Nube: Akuryou Tyson!! (Taisan)
(TN: Nube’s “entrance” this time is actually a nice pun that has a double reference if you think about it. First of all, as I mentioned before, “Akuryou Taisan” is the Japanese expression used by exorcists as a means to eliminate evil spirits, with a general translation as “be gone, evil spirits.” (“Taisan” is literally “disperse” or “break up”) However, the way that Nube says “Taisan” is actually “Taison” while acting as a boxer. This could have a reference to one of two people if you think closely:
-The first, and most obvious, is the infamous boxing heavyweight champion Mike Tyson, who was already mired in controversy by the printing of this chapter and who had just lost in November, 1996 to “washed up” opponent Evander Holyfield. Several months after this chapter, in June, 1997, was the rematch between Tyson and Holyfield which ultimately was notable for the infamous “ear biting” incident that became one of the most controversial moments in sports history.
-The other possible connection, which also is somewhat tied to Tyson, is the character Maeda Taison (though his name is all in kanji and not in katakana like Mike Tyson in Japanese), who is the lead character in the 1988-1997 comedy/sports/real life WSJ series “Rokudenashi Blues”.)
Right Glove: Akuryou
Left Glove: Taisan
SFX: Shu shu
SFX: Shi—n…
Nube: Um—since Masuda-sensei of this class is on break today, I came here in their place.
Student 1: Wh…what?
SFX: Zawa zawa
Student 2: Was that now…a gag?

12.
Nube: I’m Nueno of class 5-3. Nice to meet you!
SFX: Bi
Student 1: Heh—that’s the rumored spiritually-powered teacher.
SFX: Gaya gaya
Student 2: Pu—he’s some idiot—
Ayuhara: …
Student: Teacher--! Our class has a spiritualist to—o! Ayuhara Midori-san, show her a spi—rit.
Nube: Oh—
Nube: Ah!
Nube: I see over there; they died in this classroom 10 years ago. It’s a cute…
Midori: Ye…yes. It’s a cute, braid-haired girl.
(TN: Another interesting Japanese word to point out: Midori refers to the dead spirit as a “osage”, which is to “wear hair in braids”)

13.
Nube: Boy. And further, he’s stern.
Midori: Ye…yes, yes. A braid-hair, cute, stern-bodied…
Nube: Crew-cut.
Midori: Midori: Ah, yes yes. A braid-hair, cute, stern, crew-cut…
Nube: Amazing—Ayuhara is for real—we don’t have an amazing girl even in my class.
Student: Thought so.
Midori: Oh…oh well.
Student 2: She’s amazing.
SFX: Ki—n ko—n
Midori: Fu
Nube: Ayuhara

14.
Nube: Be moderate in pulling for friends with your fake spiritual power. A lie is a lie. You should quit this before your faults emerge.
Nube: Hahaha.
SFX: Ka--…
Midori: What the, what the!
Sign: Ayuhara
Midori: I can see spirits for real. I’ll do so perfectly. Watch me do it, no-ability teacher.
(TN: Midori ends up using Izuna’s “Reinou” bit where she calls Nube as “zero-ability” or “no ability” instead of “spiritual-ability”)
Book: Introduction to the Power of Spiritual Ability

15.
Midori: U~~m, what’s this? “People who easily see spirits do so by birth.
Midori: There are many people who hide seeing them since they had said “there is a woman standing over there” when they were young and terribly angered their parent. People like this are called ‘constitution for spiritual feeling’…”
(TN: The “constitution for spiritual feeling” is literally in Japanese “Reikan Taishitsu” and have also been seen to be translated as an “inspired constitution” due to the “reikan” translation being tied to ‘inspiration’)
Midori: Hm—m…by birth—so then, whatever I do…N
Midori: Th…this is it!
Book: Training Method for Seeing Spirits
Midori: Repeat a training of hanging a magnet by a string in darkness and stare at it.

16.
Midori: Gradually, you will see a thing that’s like a pale light in the surroundings of the magnet.
Midori: Eventually, you will see coming out a similar aura in the surroundings of people.
Midori: If you continue this further, you will come to have a constitution for spiritual feelings where you will see real spirits.
Midori: U—n u—n
Midori: U—n u—n
Girl 1: What is that—
Girl 2: That feels ba—d
Midori: U—n u—n
Sign: Storeroom

17.
Midori: Fuu…this is going considerably badly…Yesterday I did it while almost not sleeping.
Midori: A~~h, somehow even my friend’s face I see it loosely.
(TN: The “loosely” here seems a bit tough to translate: it’s tough to say if Midori is loosely seeing the spiritual aura around her friend or if the “dabu” is in reference to her being “flabby”/”baggy” as in she’s been gaining weight)
Friend: Morning—
Midori: N
Friend: ?
SFX: Oooooh…

18.
Midori: Kyaaaaa!
SFX: Petan
Friend: Wh…what, what’s wrong?
Midori: Wh…what…that’s…a…spi…spirit…
Friend: Eh, again?
Midori: …I know it…! That person…is a person that died in an accident……that pain…is difficult…I’ve come to communicate with his heart…
(TN: The “pain is difficult” part is basically two different versions of a similar word: “itai” which is purely “pain” and “kurushii” or “painful”. Since I couldn’t have “pain” and “painful” twice, I ended up translating “kurushii” as best as I could as “difficult”)
Midori: That’s seeing a spirit…I…I’ve done it…I can finally do it…
Sign: Staff Office
Nube: What!? You’ve come to gain Reishi with training!?
(TN: The term used here, which some manga readers probably should be able to recognize, is “reishi”, which uses the kanji of “spirit” for “rei” and “inspection” or “see” for “shi” and is identified as the ability to physically see spiritual beings and read the hearts of others.)
Midori: Yep! With that, I too am a true spiritualist!

19.
Nube: Dummy: you can’t go looking into doing the impossible with spirits. There’s nothing you can do if it’s by birth, but you do it on purpose…
Midori: Who is the dummy? You’re doing this because you’re speaking as a teacher that lies badly! Therefore you can’t give me complaints anymore!
Nube: Hey, wait!
Miki: She seems like a selfish girl—
Kyouko: Look who’s talking.
(TN: Kyouko’s line here to Miki is actually “anta ga iu ka ne” which translates better as “are you saying that?” knowing of Miki’s…track record. I decided to make something close without being a complete clone considering the 5th grade headband wearer’s track record)
Nube: …It would be fine if she doesn’t go any further with her Reishi talent but if she strengthens her spiritual feelings beyond the ordinary…this will become terrible.

20.
Midori: Fufufu…I have a feeling I’m becoming some superman. I’ll train much more in this.
Midori: N
Hanging Man: My…breath…is…in…such…pain……
Midori: Gyaaaaa!!

21.
Teacher: What’s wrong, Ayuhara?
Midori: A spirit is…a spirit is beneath that tree.
Teacher: What: if it’s a spirit, then aren’t you always seeing them?
Student 1: What’s with her now.
SFX: Ki—n ko—n ka—n ko—n
Student 2: Ah, next is lunch.
Midori: ………
Midori: !
SFX: Bata bata bata
Corpse: Hiii---hiiii~~~

22.
Midori: Ge--!
Student 1: Wa—
Student 2: Don’t come here--!
Midori: Wh…what…the number I’ve seeing is steadily increasing…All over the place, I have a feeling of just spirits…Do spiritualists always see these things…
SFX: Ki—n ko—n ka—n ko—n
SFX: Kan kan kan kan
SFX: Pua—n…
Midori: Nooo!!
SFX: Go—

23.
Midori: No, enough~~
Midori: !
Corpses: Save us, save us—
SFX: Zuzuzu…boko…boko…
Corpses: It hurts~~do something~~this pain~~you can see us~~~
SFX: Ooooooooh…
Midori: Hiiii

24.
Midori: Kyaaa
Midori: Teacher~~save me~~
Nube: Ayuhara!
Midori: Th…there are spirits in this town like this.
Nube: Your eyes are facing to them. When a spirit is faced with eyes, they think you can see them and come to approach, seeking assistance!
Midori: No more!! I don’t want to see spirits.
Corpses: Heartless being~~why can’t you save us~~hateful~~
Midori: No~~
Nube: ! No: the spirits are starting to get angry.

25.
Corpses: Die~~die~~why can’t you save us~~push her off~~die~~~
Midori: Nooo!!
SFX: Gatsu!
Nube: Namu Daiji Daihi Kyuugu Kyuunan: erase the Reishi ability from this person!!

26.
Midori: Are…they going to disappear…
Nube: No: they just can’t be seen by you. They’re still are within this area, but won’t interfere with those who can’t see them……
Midori: Teacher…can a spiritualist live while always seeing these things?
Nube: No: we constantly have unseen suppression.
Nube: A person with an amateur constitution for spiritual feeling calls out spirits, coming to have misfortune for themselves and coming to have even their life in danger. I too was like that long ago.
Caption: Nube when in grade school (Consult Manga Vol. 10)
Nube: You do seem to have potentially a quite-strong Reishi ability, but you pulled it out all at once…well, this Reishi isn’t a good thing.
Midori: Yes.
Nube: Your lie became true, but ultimately you can’t pull for friends with lies.
Midori: Next time I’ll pull for them with a much different thing.

27.
Midori: See, I made cakes.
Girls: Hee—Ayuhara-san, you have that talent too—
Girls: Tasty--!
SFX: Wai wai
Hiroshi: Let’s—play dodgeball!
Midori: They’re nice…the class of that teacher…

TN:
(First of all a couple things:
1. This is the last "catch up chapter" considering I created a slight gap when I did chp. 178 before three that came before. This is the last before said chapter...and also the first of the same volume it's from.
2. I did this script on Monday, but didn't get the chance to put it up until now so any commentary here may be a tad rusty on my part)

I have one silly thing to really say about this chapter just to get started: if you want to prove Midori is a liar, then don't make her "ability" seem so real at first. From the way the opening pages of the chapter are portrayed, particularly with how she claims to see the ghost behind her friend, it just makes it seem like she actually has the ability. It is only when Nube calls her out (with that weird "braid-hair" bit) that somehow he claims she's a fake, but the way even that is done just made it seem like she could see it...but only because she saw so little of it until Nube with his precise abilities made it truly appear. It just seems so confusing in the first few pages when she claims she's real, Nube says she's fake...and we get so many moments where Midori's power actually seems real to the reader.

With that said, this probably has to be one of the spookiest chapters we've had in a while...and one that sort of reminds us that everything we've seen for a while isn't all fun and games. There are a lot of really freaky and disturbing things out there...and just because you can see dead people and understand what they want doesn't mean you're capable of serving them. It is possible that maybe the intro showed that Midori had the power to see at a low level but she just tried to improve it so quickly that it blew up in her face, making her a target of every dead spirit she came across, just like how Nube's own spiritual sensitivity made him a target of the snake...that killed Minako-sensei. Midori is a character I loved and sort of imagined we should have gotten more of: she literally is a "6th-grade Miki", just as ambitious and just as much head-over-heels in her actions making her get in more trouble then she deserves to be. (she does get one nice cameo later but sadly this is her only major appearance) I also sort of imagined she really should have had the chance in the past to actually be one of Nube's students if he's been there for the last several years...but I guess she just didn't get the luck in her 5th grade selection. (heck, it would have been cool if she and Ai knew Nube before the current 5-3, but that would get on the coincidental side) Heck, you could just imagine a whole scenario with just the 6th graders...yeah it's the 5th-graders show but the 6th graders have great characters and deserve more of a chance. (well that and I just want more Midori and Ai...)
