Hell Teacher Nube 180
The Tattle-Tail Youkai: Sanshi
-> RTS Page for Hell Teacher Nube 180
Some people wish to make sure others act proper, but that doesn't means they practice what they preach. As a forgotten student of Nube's class finally comes into the limelight, her tattling nature may end up getting her in spiritual trouble!
#180: The Tattle-Tail Youkai: Sanshi

Shizuka: Class 5-3 of Doumori Elementary: Kikuchi Shizuka. My future dream is to be a policewoman.
(TN: Yeah, this is the “Shizuka chapter” this volume’s been hyping since…well, the last volume. Honestly there are other characters that could have used the exposure due to a major chapter in this volume [points at Manami], but Shizuka’s in class so she wins out)

Makoto: No, I was leaking.
Kyouko: But how about apologizing.
Miki: Enough! I don’t have the guts to!
Katsuya: Right—it wasn’t done on purpose.
Hiroshi: It was a proper accident. Be quiet on it!
74.
SFX: Tatata…
Nube: You dummies--!!
SFX: Bin bin
Nube: Were you thinking I wouldn’t know if you were silent? What rotten guts! Shameful, this truly is shameful!
Nube: There’s no place for pardoning the circumstance! One week of pulling the campus’ weeds!
Students: Eh~~
Nube: As for today, you’re going without school lunch!
(TN: This is a weird bit considering that Nube uses “nuki” here but in two different means for the others’ punishment. The first, “kusanuki”, is the term I translated as “pulling weeds”, where “nuki” is a modified version of “nuku” or “to pull”. On the other hand, the “nuki” here when he punishes for “without school lunch” is the same “nuku” but with a meaning of “without”.)

Hiroshi: A~~ww, we were exposed.
Miki: Ul—timately it was that my huge breasts came to be evidence. They’re a crime~~this huge chest.
Kyouko: Stu—pid.
(TN: Yeah, I say that proved it)
Voice: No…I saw it.
Miki: Eh?
Voices: Shizuka!
Katsuya: You tattled to the teacher about us.
Shizuka: Yes, I did.
Miki: Why—did you do it? Didn’t he get angry thanks to that! (Uga~~)
Shizuka: Wh…what~~the bad ones were all of you.
76.
Shizuka: “Heaven’s net has large meshes, but nothing escapes”. A punishment will certainly come for a crime. Quit having an unjustified resentment for misunderstanding me.
(TN: Shizuka uses a couple of tough to understand expressions and expansions of terms based on what she says here. A bit of an explanation:
-The first that she says in quotes is an actual Japanese expression that is known in Japanese as “Tenmou kaikai Sonani shite Morasazu”, which literally translates as it stands but essentially is words regarding how anything bad that is done will ultimately lead to capture or downfall, whether it be by actual defeat or through karma.
-The second things that Shizuka says involve the expression of “Sakaurami”. This has a literal translation of “an inverse grudge” or “reverse resentment”, but has the meaning as stated above of an “unjustified resentment through a misunderstanding”, such as someone hating another for doing the right thing, even if it technically should be considered “right” but the one who did it considers the right thing as wrong.)
Miki: What did you say, you b***h~~~
(TN: I’m not sure if it really is right to have Miki curse here or not with the “b-word”, so I’ll censor it like I do with a lot of my bad words in these scripts)
Kyouko: Give up, Miki. What Shizuka is saying is correct…
Narrator: Shizuka is a girl with an unusually strong sense of justice.
Shizuka: I hate deviations.
(TN: Shizuka actually uses the verb “Magaru” which is “to turn” or “to bend” here, which I interpreted as “deviants” as in those who commit injustice or cause problems that are not just as according to her own feelings)
Narrator: From then on, Shizuka continued to tell to the teacher whenever possible…
Kaneda: I’m copying your homework~~Yamada~~
Book: Math Drills
Yuka: No, I stepped on a flower in the bed.
77.
Katsuya: That Shizuka is a tattle-tale demon…
SFX: Hiso hiso (whisper whisper)
Miki: We really can’t do careless things in front of her.
Nube: ………………
Shizuka: Teacher—Futoshi-kun is licking Noro-chan’s flute.
Nube: Well then, Shizuka, that’s…what are you saying? Actually it’s good that you are telling me of everyone’s bad things but…it isn’t good to be doing just that…in other words…
Shizuka: Teacher! I am doing the just thing. Why are you saying this?
Nube: Ah, no, it’s.
Nube: ……

Mrs. Kikuchi: Shizuka—eat everything instead of what your taste is.
(TN: This was a weird expression: Shizuka’s mom actually mentions “sukikirai sezu”, which can be interpreted in a couple of ways. One way is with the translation of “sezu” into “without”, thus making “suki-kirai” into “likes and dislikes” and thus making her have it said as “eat it without breaking into “likes and dislikes”. However, “sukikirai” also has a general translation of “taste”, and “sezu” can be translatd into “instead”, thus I thought it made more sense to translate it into “”instead of what your tastes are”, which has a similar meaning)
Shizuka: Ye—s.

“Old Millipede”: Hehehe...we’re the Sanshi.

Hakuko: We live in your body and report your evil deeds to God.
Kesshi: Hihihi: And then, you will be punished by God.

-“Seiko” (the mustache one) – “Old Blue”
-“Hakuko” (One-eye) – “White Mother-in-Law”
-“Kesshi” (Blood-Face) – “Bloody Corpse”)
Shizuka: My…my evil deeds……!?

Hakuko: Hihihi..from here on, we will make a report to God every time you do bad.

82.
Nube: Possessed by Sanshi…were you?
Shiuzka: It seems so: they were beings that were like three bugs…wh...what exactly are they?
Nube: Hm—m…
Nube: The Sanshi are three insect-like youkai that enter into a person’s body from grain. When inside the body, they report to God that person’s evil deeds and diminish that person’s lifespan. Further, when that person dies, the Sanshi are released and become free. That’s why they eagerly report together and shorten that person’s lifespan.
Captions:
Top: Joushi Houkyo (Seiko)

(TN: The “Joushi/Chuushi/Geshi” represent the various locations of the various Sanshi and are appropriately translated into “Top Corpse/Middle Corpse/Bottom Corpse”. But “Houkyo” is a term that actually is much tougher to translate but is based on the two kanji “Hou” or “Swelling” and “Kyo” or “Cover/Cower”. Thus “Houkyo” could approximately be translated into “Swelling Cover”. Likewise, the “Shitsu” in the middle-one’s name translates best into “Stumble”, whereas this would end up translating into “Middle Corpse Swelling Stumble”)
Shizuka: No, teacher: quickly drive them out.
Nube: Hmm…but if you take them unreasonably, your life will be taken by God as penalty.
Nube: At any rate, since they are Youkai of China, I have to do much more investigation in reference books.

Nube: God! These beings have been giving falsified reports…As such, present the penalty!
Hakuko: Hi~~
SFX: Pishia
Sanshi: Gyaa!
Nube: With that…the reports up to now have become written off…Shizuka’s lifespan has returned to normal…
(TN: The “written off” part here is in Japanese “Chouke”, and can also be translated as “cancelled”; but “written off” works better considering they were reporting to God on all that she did)
91.
Shizuka: Teacher, when I became the side that was being tattled on, I understood it was an extremely bad thing.
Shizuka: Though I’m not perfect, I was the worst for searching for the mistakes and faults of people and continuing to tell on them.
Nube: Hmm…but continuing to tell them was a thing that came to be for those people…it’s a difficult place.
Shizuka: Well, I’ll be watchful in a way that won’t cause problems to my friends.
Nube: That’s right. Friends are the most important thing.
Principal: It was done and the vase will have to be compensated for.

(Useless) SUPPLEMENTAL EXPLANATION
#22: Sanshi
Taoism, which was born in China, has a religious creed of searching for idealizing eternal youth and immortality and becoming a Xian, but due to this, first and foremost, what they must do is to remove the “Sanshi”. Taoism classifies the human body into three areas of the top section (head, arms), middle section (chest) and lower section (abdomen, legs). Living close to the central part of these various parts (in the abdomen) are the Sanshi. They lurk in the body from before a person is born and perform activities with grains as their energy source. That’s why to remove the Sanshi, it is said that it is best to not eat grains. Aside from that, they are said to not eat meat or onions.
Of course, that is similar to an unreasonable diet and it goes without saying that instead it worsens the body. Due to this, Taoism has dosed a special-make medicine, I think that wouldn’t there be an additional danger when being seen by we modern people in saying that they drank only medicine without sufficiently partaking in meals? This may have been the official way of doing so, but it’s safer to not recklessly mimic them.
Furthermore, “Shukoushin”, which had occurred since ancient times even in Japan, has a means of defense against these Sanshi. Since the Sanshi go to their penalty report to God on the nights of Koushin of the sexagenary cycle, they were said to act without being tattle-tales as they go without sleeping during that dead of night.
(TN: A few things:
1. Xian, also known in Japanese as “Sennin”, is a difficult to define concept within Taoist beliefs. In general this term has a concept that ties it to transcendence or immortality (both physically and spiritually), but also has ties to other concepts, including “alchemist” (one who searches for the “elixir of life”, “wizard”, “hermit”/”recluse” or even “fairy”. In general, this concept belongs to one who has gained transcendence and supernatural powers due to going beyond the power of mortal men.
2. The “abdomen” in the explanation of the “central parts” of each area, as explained in the diagram back on pg. 82: the three Sanshi live in the central pivot area that is tied to the three areas of the body as defined in Taoism.
3. “Shukoushin” is tied to the Japanese folk faith of “Koushin”, a folk faith with Chinese Taoist origins influenced by Shintou and Buddhism. As part of this religion, they believe that cycles exist in 60 days akin to the “sexagenary cycle” and that they must stay up all night on the 57th day [Koushin] to protect themselves from the Sanshi. This faith is also the faith tied to the “Three Wise Monkeys” that tell people to “See no Evil, Hear no Evil, Speak no Evil”…which really should be understood by now by Shizuka)
TN: Alright, let's just say it now before we get any further: you're a hypocrite, Shizuka. How in the world can you force everyone to change their ways when you end up creating your own faults and nearly get yourself killed because of them? I guess in a way that was the whole punchline of the chapter and what it was getting across, but it just didn't really feel right with how it was depicted. I really didn't mind the concept of the Sanshi being ones who try to force their "jailer" to slowly work themselves to their death by pointing out all of their faults...but why the heck would they end up infecting Shizuka at such a moment when she was getting on everyone else's nerves regarding their own faults and tattling to make sure they fixed them? Isn't it almost ironic that she would suddenly start doing it...and then all of a sudden be attacked for the faults she herself did? If this was a character trait we had seen before in Shizuka...heck, if we had anything with Shizuka before this that suggested her just nature and her obsession in making sure people did the right thing, then maybe it could culminate in something like this just sort of like Miki was forced to reckon with the gossiping shadow monster back in vol. 1. But to have her just suddenly start going on the warpath, then give her fish up to her cat behind her mom's back just to have a bunch of bugs inside her punish her in doing so...and then just instantly have her have more and more problems...it just felt like it was too coincidental as if it was meant to teach a lesson that really didn't exist before now. The only lesson that I got from this chapter was that Shizuka had a right to help others, but that she really should fix her own mistakes before criticizing others...and point them out in a way that helped without being a tattle-tail. That way maybe she would have not felt so estranged...and nearly got killed by killer bugs. It isn't that I didn't like she finally got a chapter, it's just...it feels strange that the one she did get just made her character into such a hypocrite.

(TN: This was a weird bit to translate: Kyouko doesn’t merely call him “The Principal” but “Kouchou-sensei” or “Principal-sensei”. That didn’t sound right in English so I ended up with merely “Master Principal” to show some respect beyond him merely being the Principal)
Sanshi: Hi~~hihihihihihi
Sanshi: A~~rara Korara You ca~~n’t do that, you can’t do that.
Shizuka: Nooo!
89.
Seiko: God! Give a severe penalty to this being!
Hakuko: A crime!
Kesshi: Kekeke, you’ll die for this.
Shizuka: No~~
Nube: Hold on, Sanshi! You three are giving a false report.
Sanshi: Giku!
Seiko: wh…what, you’re saying it’s a false report!?
Kesshi: Do you have proof?
Nube: The proof is this! Namu Daiji Daihi Kyuugu Kyuunan!!
SFX: Paa
90.
Nube: The full story of all of your actions was seen in this crystal ball!
