#188: Lazy Youkai Himamushi Nyuudou

(TN: The expression that we’re going to be hearing a lot in this chapter is “mendokusai”, which has a literal translation of “troublesome” or “what a bother”. In some circles, this is translated as “what a drag”, which could work as well, but I will try to translate it’s narration correctly in each mention that it is used here)

(TN: We’re going to find out a bit more about the youkai here, but “Himamushi” has a literal translation of “Fire-Space Bug”, while “Nyuudou” is a species of youkai that typically has a bald head…typically since you see the fuzz on this one’s head so I can’t say its consistant)
Himamushi: Himamushi?
Nube: Himamushi Nyuudou is a youkai born with the transformation of a sloth-like person who goes too far in being a lazybones. According to literature, they come to be in the way by putting out fire and making brushes slip when you do work at night.
Himamushi: What an amazingly bad guy—

Nube: If you become a Himamushi Nyuudou, there is only one way to cure it: it is

Himamushi: Ha!!
(TN: The “lethargic power” that Himamushi Nyuudou uses as his last resort uses a massive parody of the “Kamehameha” [Turtle Destruction Wave] which is the iconic attack of the “Dragon Ball” franchise. The name of the move Himamushi uses is “Mukiryokuha” with “Mukiryoku” being the same “Lethargic” that he mentions in the “lethargic power” comment. (Thus, “Mukiryokuha” = “Lethargic Wave”) Further, the parody of the Kamehameha isn’t just in the name but also in the stance and even the pronunciation of the move, with the users of the Kamehameha usually emphasizing and speaking out each of the syllables one by one before emitting the beam with the final “Ha”)

Mr. Nakajima: Noriko! Why are you here?
Noriko: I wanted to meet with you, father…
Mr. Nakajima: --right: your father now had some extremely mysterious feeling. It’s been many years since I’ve come to have a carefree feeling like this.
Mr. Nakajima: Let’s cancel all work for tomorrow…why, so we can do what we want afterwards. Let’s go to the amusement park tomorrow. And then we’ll have a meal at a hotel.

TN: Well I guess there is good in the world even for the powers of laziness...even if they seem rather trivial to most of those around you. Of course, Himamushi's powers may be rather convenient considering the situation regarding Mr. Nakajima, but this situation sort of needed them since...well, he really stinks with scheduling. Heck, you really think that he should have figured out how to put Noro-chan into his schedule...or at least have better worked out with that Nagasaki client another day when he could have gone out to meet with him instead of just rushing right out there when he made the promise. Then again there is also this thought: what if this date was the only real time the client was able to meet and Mr. Nakajima had to take that flight or else lose business? Heck, the thought was working its way through me as I wrote the script: I understand that Noro-chan was trying to spend time with her father, but what exactly was her father's life like? Was there another way to save him from himself without the enrollment of a youkai? And what about work: how sensitive was the transactions he had to do and was there a way he could arrange in doing them without losing either business or points regarding his family? I guess I was probably thinking too much about it since this was a really good chapter and did teach a lesson about balancing time between home and work by any means necessary...but I just sort of wonder somehow how important that Nagasaki trip was and whether Noro-chan ruined a good business deal just to get her dad to herself. I do assume that she did the right thing, but it does make one think. And as for Himamushi...well, for some silly reason I sort of imagine this as "Kafka's Metamorphosis...with a happy ending", but at least he doesn't quite redeem his lazy ways if you read that ending right. (thought it is weird it was Noro-chan who fixed him...but hey, she doesn't get the time that often)
