For the longest time, she has held a particular connection to Nube that feels like beyond that of a teacher and student. But as Kyouko is about to find out, their connection may have been several lifetimes in the making...

#193: It Was Good That I Met You

154.
Kyouko: Nube, I’ve gathered the homework notebooks.—
Sign: Staff Office
Kyouko: He’s here.
SFX: Guo~~~Gogagaga

155.
Kyouko: N, enough. You’re a slob, leaving it around like this.
SFX: Tekipaki tekipaki
Kyouko: Somehow…I feel that I can’t abandon Nube like this.
Kyouko: Aw—w, he’s really sweating like this.
(TN: Kyouko’s “really sweating” comment is the expression “asekaki” or “one who perspires freely” or a “great sweater”)

156.
Principal: Ha ha ha. Kyouko-chan, you’re always taking care of Nueno-sensei. It’s as if you’re like his sweetheart.
SFX: Basha
Nube: Gyaaa!!
Kyouko: Pr…Principal! Even if you’re joking, don’t say that strange thing. Why am I that?
Nube: Hot hot
Principal: Ha ha ha
Kyouko: Really, why am I
Kyouko: Well then…in truth my first kiss was mistakenly given to Nube but
Caption: Refer to Manga vol. 14
Kyouko: Nube and I are teacher and student. Nube has Yukime-san and I have Hiroshi…

157.
SFX: Ki—n ko—n ka—n ko—n
Kyouko: Nube and I aren’t like that.
Kyouko: It’s much different…somehow…
Miki: Well~~it’s that, that!
“Tan Girl”: Yo, been a while, seems so—
SFX: Basha basha basha
Izuna: It’s me, it’s me, Izuna-san. (I painted on that brown skin)
(TN: The “brown skin” and flowers and such that Izuna had on is in reference to the “ganguro” phenomenon that was growing in popularity around this period, where young Japanese women took on light hair and dark tanned skin as well as various accessories to be as flashy as possible. It was another of the “kogal” phenomenons that Izuna, as we know, is part of herself)

158.
Izuna: Actually, I want to collaborate on experimenting a new spiritual ability jutsu.
Sign: Doumori Park
Miki: Hee, which jutsu?
Izuna: It’s called “Rinne Recurrence”.
(TN: See the previous chapter’s Supplemental for more on the “rinne” phenomenon; incidentally, the Japanese name for the jutsu is “Rinne Kaiki”, with “kaiki” standing for “revolution” or “recurrence”. I went with “recurrence” due to the information Izuna is about to state)
Miki: Rinne?
Izuna: Do you know humans are all reborn somethings…in brief, previous existences? Rinne Recurrence is a jutsu where the soul has a persona experience of returning to previous existences. It’s not just a previous existence; it the next previous existence…and even further previous existences; you can personally experience going back many generations until the jutsu is undone. In short: it’s a sightseeing tour of the soul’s previous existences.
Miki: Hee, that seems somewhat interesting.

159.
Izuna: Well? I had a scroll within the baggage that I came to bring from my parent’s home. This may fail being a quite difficult jutsu, but become my experimental subjects.
SFX: Suzaza~~~
Izuna: I beg you…aren’t we friends? I’ll treat you when I make money with this.
Kyouko & Miki: Janken
SFX: Poi
Kyouko: Ge! Me!?
Miki: Do it—
Izuna: Alright, if it’s decided, then we’ll get started. Sit over there.
Kyouko: Uuh, no way…
Miki: It’ll—be fine. It’ll be fun seeing previous existences.~~
Izuna: Here we go!
SFX: Jatsu

SFX: Dokun
Kyouko: !!
Kyouko: Kyaaa!
SFX: Guooo

161.
Kyouko: Kya

“Kyouko”: Huh?
Kyouko: Kyaaa!! I…I’m a boy!? (and further I’m peeing outside…)

164.
Izuna: Kyouko-chan
Miki: Kyouko!
SFX: Peshi peshi
Miki: Wa…wasn’t this a tad bad? 10 minutes have passed since you undid the jutsu and yet…
Izuna: Strange, her sould should have returned immediately and yet.
Miki: Kyouko~~~
Izuna: Kyouko-chan
Nube: What are you doing!!
Izuna: This is bad…
Nube: What!? Her soul has gone back to previous existences!? Stupid! Why were you doing that difficult jutsu…
Izuna: I…I’m sor~~ry.

165.
Nube: This is untimely…with this, her soul isn’t returning…
Izuna: Wh…what’s the best thing to do?
Nube: Someone with strong spiritual power can only go and lead her back. I’ll go.
Nube: Humans are beings that have what’s called karma in meeting many times in some previous existence a person that has to do with them in a previous existence. In short: Kyouko and I should have met in some previous existence…therefore, if I return to a previous existence with this jutsu…
Nube: Perform the same jutsu to me.
Izuna: Y…yes….
Izuna: Tensei Kaiki Muryou Zeko Ouchourei
SFX: Jara…

Kyouko: Wh…where am I—
SFX: Wa—wa—wa—
Voice 1: The Abe Clan, the powerful family who controls the Okurokugun, will be eradicated without leaving behind women or children by order of the Imperial Household.
(TN: There is going to be a bit more on this in the Supplemental, but basically this is tied to the Abe Clan, who in the 11th century became the dominant clan of the “Okurokugun” (A section of “six countries” of the Northern Tohoku region) and whose attempt of pushing their power forwards ultimately lead to their fall by the end of the Early Nine-Year War [Zenkunen War] between 1051-1063)
Voice 2: There’s one!
Samurai: Die—
Kyouko: Kyaaa—

168.
“Voice”: Princess--!
Kyouko: !
“Warrior”: Haa haa haa
Kyouko: Nu…Nube!?

169.
“Nube”: Princess…it was inexcusable that I was late…it was filled with enemy soldiers within the fence…I’m sorry to say…we’re already…!
Kyouko: That’s Nube…isn’t it!? But…why is he appearing like this…!?
SFX: Gashi
Kyouko: !!
“Nube”: Please forgive me…I wasn’t able to protect you…! You whom I love…please love me, who doesn’t surpass a mere servant, yours…
Kyouko: Eh…eeeh…!? These two…were sweethearts…!?
SFX: Doki doki doki

170.
Voice: …When we’re reborn…next time…you certainly…will be protected to the end…
Kyouko: Aah…this feeling seems…yes, this…is the thing I vaguely feel with Nube…
SFX: Su
“Nube”: Kyouko
Kyouko: ?

171.
Nube: It’s me, Nube~~
Kyouko: Eeh!?
Nube: Those who meet in the future have met somewhere in the past. I too have returned to a previous experience with Izuna’s jutsu.
Kyouko: ……
Nube: This here seems like a castle of a powerful clan in Tohoku that was destroyed by the Imperial Court in the Heian era. You’re the princess there. I…seem like a mere servant.
Kyouko: Wrong, Nube, you’re not…mere…
Kyouko: We are…
Nube: The fire is surrounding…it’s dangerous here. Let’s go home…
Kyouko: Yes…

172.
Nube: Namu Daiji Daihi Kyuugu Kyuunan: return our souls to the present world!

173.
Kyouko: As such, my journey touring previous existences ended.
Kyouko: Yes…Nube and I did have a connection from a previous existence.
Kyouko: That was even if he was my sweetheart, my parent or my master, and he was always protecting me.
(TN: The “master” here that Kyouko mentions is “kainushi”, as in the master/owner of a pet)
Kyouko: Now…as my teacher.

(Useless) SUPPLEMENTAL EXPLANATION

#31: Emishi and the Abe Clan

The Abe Clan was a powerful family who ruled over Okurokugun (Isawa, Esashi, Waga, Hienuki, Shiwa, Iwate) in the Tohoku region in the Heian period. They were defeated and annihilated by the army of the Imperial Court in the Early Nine-Years War, but Fujiwara Kiyohira, who took it over, revived the Northern Fujiwara and ruled this land until it was destroyed by Minamoto no Yoritomo in the Kamakura Period.

The birth of the Abe Clan has many mysteries. The common opinion is said to be they are Emishi. Emishi is thought to have a word root in Imichu (meaning of a person who wears beautiful clothes) in Ainu and, due to this, the Abe Clan has the customs of Ainu lineage. However because the surname that called them “Abe” was had as a thing of aristocrats at those times, it has been thought that these people, who were originally central aristocrats, weren’t aborigines.

The Tohoku region of Ancient Japan resembled the Western Pioneer period in America and there was no stop to the wars between the central government and the former inhabitants. Abe no Hirafu of the Nara Period and Sakanoue no Tamuramaro of the early Heian were shoguns that were active in controlling the Tohoku Region. They were confronted there and even on the aborigines’ side, there emerged heroes such as Taimonokimi Aterui and were defeated in the violent struggle with the government troops.

The records and legends of the war always are written in the viewpoint of the conqueror. Due to this, the defeated are drawn as harsh. Even Aterui, the hero of the Emishi, is drawn as a heinous youkai called “Akuroou” within the legends. (Of course it contradicts with reality) Since then, the youkai called Tsuchigumo has been written as a former inhabitant who was defeated in a battle with the Imperial Court, but there is a theory that even the myth of the famous Yamato-no-Orochi and Susanoo-no-Mikoto is one that was drawn from the conflict of the Santetsu nation (Master Tatara) and the Imperial Court. If you investigate myths and legends in detail, then you may be able to see a record of the abominable wars of the past.

(TN: A few notes regarding this entry:
1. The Okurokugun section of Tohoku is all currently connected to the Prefecture of Iwate, the second largest in Japan.
2. While it is strange to have the Fujiwara mentioned alongside the Abe clan, Fujiwara no Kiyohira, the founder of this family, was the son of a daughter of Abe no Yoritoki, thus making him tied to the Abe clan who had previously lead the Okurokugun.
3. The Emishi, also known as “Ebisu” are currently thought of being a separate group that may be related to the Ainu but are not exactly them, merely having some genetic connection with the people most notably found in Hokkaido. Their connection to the Ainu is more from Chinese records than from those records of Japan.
4. Abe no Hirafu is a weird story in regards to his relationship both to the Imperial Court and to the Abe clan: though fighting against the Emishi of the area in 658, he may have been an ancestor who lead to their founding and control of the area.
5. Sakanoue no Tamuramaro of the early Heian was notable for his conquest of the Emishi, leading to their migration further north towards Hokkaido. Their origin is in dispute, with some claiming their connection with Han China, and others with Korea.
6. Aterui, mentioned here as Taimonokimi Aterui, is the most prominent leader of the Emishi from the Isawa Band. He was notable for defeating an army sent by the emperor in June of 787 and again in 795 until Sakanoue no Tamamaro lead to the ultimate surrender of the great warrior, leading to his execution. The youkai Akuroou, who is commonly seen as an oni or demon, is inspired by Aterui.)

TN: Somehow that part near the end nearly confused me until I read it right: I got that Nube was the "protecting servant" who watched over "Princess Kyouko" of the Abe Clan, but when he arrived to help her out, I actually thought it was Nube already within his body...but then he showed up a bit later and then I realized it was the servant in his own life saying his own lines. The problem with reliving past lifetimes is that somehow it is hard to tell when it's the person and when it's their past self. Then again...it is weird to think of Nube and Kyouko meeting in another lifetime where she was a dog and he owned her...or something like that as hinted by that ending. Past lifetime stuff confuses me...and though you just have to wonder about what Kyouko has been through in this chapter and in all her lives prior to this one, at least there is a bit more of an explanation aside from merely being a dangerous "teacher/student crush" like she figured before. Just as long as we don't have to see her as a boy again...or some of the other weird things she once was... (BTW: Izuna doesn't make a good Ganguro...)
