Youkai Gachapon
-> RTS Page for Hell Teacher Nube 199
Sometimes even within piles of junk, a treasure may yet be found. Unfortunately when said treasure is in the hands of the corrupt Oshou, he may want to use it for fun and profit...particularly if he takes advantage of Nube's own students!
#199: Youkai Gachapon
96.
Caption: Doumori Temple, behind the school
SFX: Ko--n!
Nube: Hm--m
Oshou: When I was cleaning my cellar, these various rare items emerged. How is that: it's the tail of a nine-tailed fox that possessed retired emperor Toba and was exterminated by Kazusanosuke and Miuranosuke. Ten million would be worthless as the value for that antique.
(TN: Emperor Toba (or in this case "former emperor Toba") was the 74th emperor of Japan, who ruled between 1107 & 1123. He was the emperor who was seduced by kyuubi Tamamonomae according to legends, though many state the emperor seduced by her was follow-up Konoe, who ruled between 1142 & 1155 and was one of the sons of Toba under empress Nariko)
97.
Nube: It's no good. Made in Taiwan is written on it.
Oshou: ...Ah, yes.
Oshou: Then how about this? Long ago, a famous high priest challenged a powerful evil spirit with do-or-die preparation...
Oshou: Sealing it within with an art exchanging his own life...
Nube: That's a fake.
(TN: The "sealed electric rice cooker" that Oshou has is actually in reference to the original defeat and sealing of the evil Demon King Piccolo in the original Dragon Ball, which, when having a Ofuda talisman on them combined with the containment ability ended up sealing him until released by Pilaf)
Oshou: Um, then how about this? It's a bewitched item that tengu used to fly in the sky...
SFX: Paka
Nube: ......
98.
Nube: What are these? They're just shady items~~ () They're a waste of time~~shall I go home~~~
Oshou: Wa...wait
Oshou: I truly should have some chestnut youkan that were given from a parishoner.
(TN: "Youkan" is a combination of red azuki bean paste, agar and sugar formed into a gelatin that usually is eaten in cube form as it is served. Many times, there are additions to the youkan, one of the most notable being chestnuts)
SFX: Dota dota
Nube: Hmm, which? Then, shall I judge them in earnest?
Nube: N? A weak...youki...?
Nube: These are...
Scroll: Fujaetama
(TN: Not sure if this is a proper Japanese word or not, but the translation for it is "Wicked-Sealing Balls")
99.
Nube: What's been put inside is a Chimi Mouryou. It's been sealed in glass spheres.
(TN: We'll be learning more about them in the chapter but the general translation of "Chimi Mouryou" is "Evil spirits of rivers and mountains")
Nube: This is also a Chimi Mouryou, and this. N? There's one empty one...
Nube: !? Huh...
SFX: Bashuu
Oshou: Oh brother, he is a troublesome fellow. Well it is chestnut youkan from a half-year ago, but it'll be fine.
SFX: Shuuu...
Oshou: Huh? Nueno-sensei?
Oshou: What are these?
100.
Oshou: Hey sonny, mi--ssy, get over here. I have something nice. (Hee hee hee---)
Top Sign: Merely 500 yen!
Bottom Sign: Treasurer of Light and Darkness
(TN: I couldn't really read it with the second kanji on the top hard to read but I tried to make it out the best I could)
Kyouko: Suspicious
Oshou: It's a youkai gachapon.
(TN: The term "gachapon" is connected to a vending machine that distributes capsules filled with toys, it probably just felt easier for me to use "gachapon" though than to use "vending machine" for the title and the object that Oshou has set up)
101.
Hiroshi: Worthless~~~somehow isn't that another decent thing?
Katsuya: Did--n't he take some defective Pokemon from a factory and put those in?
(TN: While it is obvious that Pokemon should be well known in the US (considering it's major here and still around even today), I do have to remind you that the original "Pocket Monsters" video game for the Game Boy was released in Japan in February, 1996 and, by this point in 1997, was a major force and franchise that had taken Japan by storm, with the success both of the games and of the anime series which had started in April, 1997. Pokemon would not see the light of day in the US for another year, until September, 1998)
Oshou: These brats~~~
Hiroshi: Well, shall we go--to the game center? (let's go, let's go)
Oshou: Wa...wait, wait, I'll show you now.

"Monster": Shaaa~~
102.
Hiroshi: Amazing--! It's a real youkai!
Makoto: Is...isn't that dangerous?
Oshou: Ah--it's fine. These glass spheres are like capsules that seal the youkai but...whats been placed inside are Chimi Mouryou, which are weak like insects.

Oshou: Thus, when you sprinkle salt on them, they dissapear immediately.

Kyouko: That's absurd. This could be some trap again.
Makoto: I'll buy one.
Miki: Me too.
Hiroshi: Me too--
SFX: Gacha gacha
Oshou: Thank you very much---
Kyouko: Ju...just a moment everyone...

Hiroshi: Alright, let's have a showdown---
Oshou: Ya~~y, let's make a ring on the grounds.
103.
SFX: Go---nnn
Oshou: Heated feelings are drawn in the chest and today there's a gathering of bad brats---Well~~~let's start the Chimi Mouryou Doumori Showdown---! From our lottery, our first match will be Hiroshi vs. Makoto---!
SFX: Wa---wa---wa---
Hiroshi: Go!
SFX: Parin!
Oshou: Ooh--those are amazing muscles.
Hiroshi: Al--right, I'll name you Andy Hugmon!
(TN: Andy Hug is a notable Swiss-born fighter of kickboxing as well as seidokaikan and Kyoukushin karateka, notable for being the victor of the K-1 Grand Prix Kickboxing tournament in 1996, as well as runner-up in 1997 & 1998. He died of leukemia at the young age of 36 in 2000)
Andy Hugmon: Shaaaa~~~

Makoto: ...It seems strong.
SFX: Wa--wa--
Hiroshi: Fu, will you step down, boy?
Makoto: He--y, send out a strong one!

SFX: Dogagaga~~~
Chimirangers: Bi~~~mama~~~ (A~~~h)
SFX: Pyu~~~
Oshou: Well--then, the five of them together are spoiled children with only the ability to make Chimiranger poses! It's a tragic elimination~~~!
Hiroshi: Ahaha, just like their owner.
Oshou: Next is Kyouko-chan.
Kyouko: Send out a strong one, send out a strong one.
Kyouko: Go
SFX: Pari--n!
106.
Oshou: We--ll, that's the emergence of a sexy one--!
"Catgirl": Ufu~~~n
Kyouko: Ho~~hoho, she resembles her owner after all. I'll give it the name of Pretty Kyougon.
(TN: "Kyou" in "Pretty Kyougon" is actually a Japanese term for "pleasure" or "entertainment", thus an appropriate name for Kyouko's Chimi Mouryou...well that or its just the "kyou" in "Kyouko" and she's just rubbing it in)
Miki: That's a lie...I'd understand if it was mine, but why is that Kyouko's monster?
Oshou: Ooh~~! Slowly she's showing her chest...
Pretty Kyougon: Ufu~~n
Oshou: We-----ll, in truth, Pretty Kyougon's chest is a washboard, that is painful---
SFX: Gari gari gari
Andy Hugmon: Gya~~~
107.
Hiroshi: Andy~~~~
Miki: Ho~~~hoho, it truly is just like it's owner.
Miki: Next is me. Since Kyouko had that, I'll have a super-seductive desirable beautiful female monster---Go---huge-breasted monster!
(TN: "Desirable" is actually in Japanese "munmun", which is "a woman's desire", thus "desirable" in my translation)
SFX: Parin
Pretty Kyougon: Come here...
SFX: Gari gari
"Boob Monster": Gya--
Oshou: Victory for Pretty Kyougon--!
Kyouko: Hmph! How's that, my monster is the strongest! (She's already--desperate)
Miki: Nununu...
108.
Katsuya: Alright, Miki, I'll take on that rival.
Oshou: Well--the next challenger is Kimura Katsuya!!
Oshou: Oh--that's an ill-bred monster from how it seems. It's a frightening delinquent monster!
"Drunk": Ketsu
SFX: Pe
"Drunk": Gehi gehi gehi (Mi--ssy, let's drink)
Pretty Kyougon: Gya--!
Oshou: He's drunk and getting involved with her. Even it's washboard is overwhelmed--!
Shuichi: Oh brother, that's an unrefined monster.
Girls: Kya--Shuichi-kun, kya--
109.
Oshou: Ooh, Shuichi's rich monster is scattering around money.
Katsuya: You're quite indecent!
Shuichi: Am I~~~
Oshou: Katsuya's Furyomon is already in a dog condition---!
(TN: "Furyomon" refers to the previous "Delinquent Monster", with "Furyou" being "delinquent")
Kaneda: Out of the way, out of the way! Really, all of you have been sending out just weeaklings.
Hiroshi: What's that, Kaneda? You have self confidence.
Kaneda: Look at my ball.
Hiroshi: Ah! A black ball!
Kaneda: Yep. This I'm certain is a success.
Kaneda: The strongst monster will emerge with this. Give me the championship.
Kaneda: Go. Super-Ultra-Mach-Very-Very Goemonster
(TN: I went with English for most of Kaneda's monster name mostly because it all translated out and for the most part he was sort of emphasizing the power of his "black ball" monster without knowing what it was. It's Japanese name is "Chou-Ulutora-Mahha-Beriberi-Goemonsta" BTW: I assume the "Goemon" part is referring to the famous bandit hero Ishikawa Goemon)
SFX: Parin
110.
Hiroshi: Amazin---...It's five times the other monsters...
SFX: Zuri zuri
Kaneda: It's a success after all. Do it! Fight, Goemonster...
"Rich Monster": !? Gyaaaa!
SFX: Gabu (Chomp) | Bari bari
Hiroshi: Hey hey, just a moment.
Katsuya: It's eating it!?
Kaneda: I...I don't know--it's some carnivore.

Noriko: Kyaaa!
SFX: Gabu
Oshou: Uwa, it's going to even eat the monster the people have.
Oshou: The salt, salt! Dissapear---!
SFX: Ba ba
Oshou: Uwa--it's ineffective!
SFX: Gi---
Hiroshi: Alright, we'll defeat it with everyone's monsters! Go---
Kyouko: If we join our powers, we'll win!
"Monsters": Gyaa! Pii!

SFX: Muku muku muku

Goemonster: Gya---
Oshou: Th...that's not a Chimi Mouryou...it's a youkai that sucks youki and becomes bigger...that was in there?
Hiroshi: Do something!
Oshou: I don't know, I don't know.
SFX: Pyu~~~
Hiroshi: Ah---he ran off.
113.
Goemonster: Giii
SFX: Gasa gasa
Kyouko: Uwaa, it...it's coming!
Hiroshi: It attacks humans too---
SFX: Wa---zazaza | Hi---
Voice 1: It's firmed up! Scatter and run! Someone contact Nube!
Kaneda: Wa---don't come, wa---I'm unappetizing---
SFX: Dododo
Hiroshi: Kaneda!
Hiroshi: You guy---
SFX: Gon
Hiroshi: That's bad, it's angered---
Kyouko: Stupid----
114.
Hiroshi: Damn it~~~we've been cornered...
SFX: Jiri jiri
Kyouko: Hiroshi! Look here! There's just one remaining in the gachapon!
Hiroshi: What?
Hiroshi: It's true! And further it's a black one! Perhaps there may be inside one stronger than it...can't we say that there's good fortune in the remaining one!
SFX: Gacha gacha
Hiroshi: I beg you! Let there be a strong one inside! Come out!
SFX: Pika---
(TN: The "pose" by our certain "hero in the ball" is akin to the original transformation sequence by the classic Tsurubaya tokusatsu hero "Ultraman", which is essentially the hero raising his fist and "flying into becoming" the great alien hero)
115.
Kyouko: Nube...!?
116.
Nube: Namu!
Nube: Fuu, I'm out at last.
Hiroshi & Kyouko: Nube!
SFX: Shuuu
Hiroshi: Nube emerged from the gachapon.
Kyouko: Nube was a gachapon premium.
Nube: Wrong.
117.
Nube: That sphere was a powerful capsule made by a high priest of long ago. Originally it was made for sealing youkai, but they captured Chimi Mouryou that were passing by it since they were too powerful.
Nube: I carelessly touched the sphere with the Oni no Te. It felt the maliciousness of the Oni and the sphere sealed me.
Hiroshi: Nube is rapidly having a touch of a youkai in him... (whisper, whisper)
Kyouko: Is it alright to be taught by that teacher (whisper)
Nube: Did you hear me?
Oshou: He--y, this time I have a youkai catcher from my cellar...
Nube: Don't show those anymore!

(Useless) SUPPLEMENTAL EXPLANATION
#35: Chimi Mouryou
People long ago thought that spirits were dwelling in all things in the natural world, but the forms which these spirits changed into and appeared as were called "Chimi Mouryou".
Usually, like with what is said as "a kind of Chimi Mouryou", there are many which is utilized as a sequence of words that is given as a general term for youkai in general. But, strictly speaking, "Chimi" and "Mouryou" were originally separate youkai. Chimi were youkai who live in mountains and forests and are called by a separate name of Sudama. It is a human-faced, demon-body monster that was born from the spiritual energy of mountains, forests, trees and stones. (There are also situations where Chi and Mi are separated. In this situation, Chi is a mountain god and Mi is Sudama) Regards to this, Mouryou points towards a youkai that lives in water. Mizuhame, which was introduced prior, is said to be a variety of Mouryou.
All of these are old youkai that seemed to be introduced in ancient Chinese myth. According to the famous Kyougoku Natsuhiko in a mystery novel where youkai was the theme, their origin is said to be older than the Oni. If it's about the Oni, then they came from the Kimon direction (northeast) according to Onmyoudou, but the case of the Chimi Mouryou, which are older than them, the Kimon according to Onmyoudou does not apply. Therefore, that is the reason that those that come from places that are all from all directions without being caused by a direction are said to be Chimi Mouryou.
(TN: A few things:
1. While I couldn't find necessarily anything regarding the whole "Chimi Mouryou"/"Sudama" connection, I did find that "Chi" on it's own refers to a demon that resembles a tiger in appearance and could possibly refer to the Sudama, while "Mi" is a type of forest demon, typically an elf-like being, or possibly the Sudama.
2. Mizuhame, which is what some associate "Mouryou" with or as, was the youkai that appeared back in #132 for those interested in researching further.
3. Natsuhiko Kyogoku is a famous mystery writer who has won the Mystery Writers of Japan award and typically has many works based around the realm of youkai. His two most famous works are his first, "Ubume no Natsu" (The Summer of Ubume, based on the lore of the "Ubume", a youkai who is born of a woman who dies in childbirth) and "Mouryou no Hako" (The Mouryou Box, which has since become the origin for both a manga and an anime)
TN: Well, I think there was a major lesson learned this time: when dealing with collectable monster games of this type, the monster generally matches the master...which means Kaneda should never play around with anything ever again. (and Oshou should never touch anything like this...period) With that said, in a period where Pokemon and Tamagotchi had become major forces (and this isn't even getting into Digimon, which Okano actually has a bit of connection to...yeah later but sure), a chapter where the students ended up playing around with their own combating Chimi Mouryou youkai was a nice change of pace and allowed for greater class participation than we've seen to get as of late. (well OK, the main five is one thing but it's been a while since Shuichi or Kaneda have done anything to influence a Nube chapter) I really liked how a lot of the monsters reflected the characters...yeah maybe it was too coincidental but you could maybe say that the Chimi Mouryou reacted to them and gave them something that perfectly matched them. (though seeing Miki's was just...surreal) Of course at the same time it sort of also showed the dark side of the whole ordeal...OK, maybe not "Shadow Star Narutaru" dark but dark enough to show that some creatures really don't care about the rules...and that maybe playing around and making games of something like spiritual stuff really is never, and I mean never, the best thing to do with anything like this; even if nearly all of the youkai are harmless, there are stiil a few creeps in the mix. I do sort of wish though we got a few more of them revealed...like what was that thing Noriko had? Couldn't we see what became of that thing before that monster ate it? And what about the likes of Akira or Shizuka...or some other class members? Yeah it would have extended the chapter but with something as fun as this, you wouldn't have minded seeing more of these creatures before...becoming food for Kaneda's monstrosity.
