It is amazing when something you never would have expected occurs out of the blue...but even more so when they all do at once! When a series of coincidences occur in Doumori, their source may be something no one could think of...

#200: The Goddess of Fortuity

119.
Caption: Doumori Town: 1:00 AM
Electrician: Alright, the check of every part is finished. Throw the switch on the new power line.
Caption: Inside the Doumori Transformer Substation
Electrician: This new power line surrounds Doumori in a circle. We'll gain a power supply that is stable.
Technician: Magnificent.
Electrician: Throw the switch!
SFX: Bachi bachi bachi

120.
(Title page...um, I doubt "creating a new power source" and "electrocuting a cute winged girl" have anything in common, does it?)

121.
Caption: "Fortuity" is when an occurrence of extremely small probability occurs. However, this probability is never zero...
(TN: The key term for the chapter, "fortuity", is based on the Japanese word of "guuzen", which has multiple meanings including "Chance", "suddenly", or "accidentally". I rogiinally was going to translate "guuzen" as merely "chance", but since that word has multiple meanings regarding luck and that are tied to probability, I instead went with a word that more emphasizes the concept of something that barely could happen that does based upon a tiny chance, which turned out to be "fortuity".)
Kyouko: Good morning--Hiroshi! Nube!
Hiroshi: Ah---good morn...
Kyouko: ...Hiroshi...isn't that the same T-shirt? Where did you buy that?
Hiroshi: The Jafco in front of the station.
(TN: "Jafco" I couldn't find a translation for but I assume it's the name of a chain or something)
Kyouko: I thought so.
Nube: Well~~this is grilling~~coming to school in a pair look. This is those two again. (It's great)
Kyouko: No--way. This is fortuous.
Hiroshi: Are you the boss of me? (I hate this)
(TN: Hiroshi originally said the more generic "oyaji ka, anata" which is merely "are you my old man?" or "are you the boss", but I figured that with Hiroshi's aggrevation of the same shirt as Kyouko, he would probably answer alongside his aggrevation for this moment)

122.
Miki: Ara
Hiroshi: Eh!? Miki too!?
Kyouko: Wow--fortuitous.
Katsuya: Yo--
Hiroshi: Ooh!?
Hiroshi & Kyouko: Wa
Akira: Eh?
Makoto & Noriko: Ah.
Everyone: Eeh~~~~!?

123.
Nube: The entire class...u~~m, this has a probability of one in tens of thousands...no, hundreds of millions.
Kyouko: This is a coincidence of fortuity.
Nube: This is a strange thing too.
Nube: N.
Nube: Ah---I'll be returning the math test of the other day.--
Students: Uwa~~no way~~~
Nube: 68 points. 68. 68. 68. 68. 68. Someone everyone has a 68.
Students: Fortuity again. (Ooh---...)
Hiroshi: Me too...
Nube: And yet everyone gets a 0 since you forgot to write in your names!
Students: Eeeh---Fortuitous again.
Hiroshi: Hahaha...

124.
Kyouko: Huh----this fortuity is a thorough thing----
Nube: Well then, it's fortuitous because it's rare.
Announcer: Pinponpa--npon: we will announce the prize-winners of the "Good teeth contest".
Announcer: Kimura-san of 1-1, Kimura-san of 1-2, Kimura-kun of 2-3, Kimura-san of 2-5, Kimura-kun of 3-3...
Nube: Eh? They're all Kimura?
Kyouko: Fortuitous again.
Nube: ----Well, this---is that--sort---of day. (Yaw~~~n)
Principal: Wa!
SFX: Slip!
Principal: Ooh! A valuable vase of my native home was saved by fortuitously going into Nueno-kun's mouth!

125.
Caption: During lunch
Nube: It's strange. Is today a fortuitous day?
Noriko: Kya!
Nube: What's---wrong?
Miki: In spite of it being Noro-chan
Noriko: I...inside this potato is...
Nube: A ring? It truly had sunk in there, strange---
Noriko: It's not just that; this ring is mine.
Nube: Eh?
Noriko: When I was in 3rd grade, I bought it at a night fair; it suited me and I was always wearing it. Here, it is carved with "Noriko".
(TN: A "night fair" or "yomise" is a shop that is open at night during a festival)

126.
Noriko: But after that, I had gone potato digging with my family and, at that time, I ended up losing it.
Miki: Eeh!? Then you buried it in the ground of a potato field, but it went into a potato and emerged in your lunch!?
(TN: Weirdly "potato" here isn't the same word twice: the first time Miki says "jaga" when refering to a "jagahatake" or a "potato field", while "potato" is "imo", or a regular potato/tuber)
Kyouko: That's incredible fortuity.
Noriko: It is strange--
Miki: Yes, yes: even though I just investigated it in a book, there are tehse fortuities all over the world.
Book: Fortuities of the World
Miki: 1950, America: 15 choir members of a church in Nebraska were all late for a meeting time of 7:20. The reasons each were late was individual, but, even if it was fortuitous, the church had an explosion accident at 7:25 and everyone was saved thanks to their lateness.
(TN: This tale is actually true: it occurred on March 1st, 1950 at the West Side Baptist Church in Beatrice, Nebraska and every member of the choir was late for the 7:20 PM practice before the explosion occurred five minutes later)

127.
Miki: 1976, England: a baby fell from the 14th floor; it hit Mr. Joseph Figlock, who was walking beneath, and was saved. Further, one year later, the exact same baby fell again and, once again, it hit Mr. Figlock who was walking beneath; the duo were saved once again.
(TN: This tale was true, but the details, year and place are completely off. Joseph Figlock was actually a street sweeper in Detroit when, in 1937, a baby fell from the 4th floor leading to it being caught by him. In 1938, a 2 year old fell from another 4th floor window where they were caught, again, by Mr. Figlock)
Miki: A fortuity of names: 1911, England: three men were executed for the crime of killing Lord Godfrey, who lived on Greenberry Hill. Their names were Green, Berry and Hill.
(TN: Another adjusted tale that is true but with a lot of details lost: in 1678, Sir Edmond Berry Godfrey, an English Magistrate, was supposedly murdered and found on October 12th, 1678 in a ditch on Greenberry Hill (now known as Primrose Hill). Many suspect this was tied to a plot he concocted in murdering King Charles II due to his Anglican beliefs and replace him with a Roman Catholic king. Though many suspect that the murder was performed by someone else, ultimately three men were accused in the murder that were ultimately executed for the crime: Robert Green, Henry Berry and Lawrence Hill, thus the "Greenberry Hill" irony. Later it was found they were falsly executed but by then it was too late. (thus it could be possible that they were set up to take the fall perhaps due to the connection of their names to where he was found and that it was intentional and not irony) The murderer of Sir Godfrey remains unsolved even to this day)
Miki: 1975: the Melchis family were watching the movie "Titanic" on television. At the sure instant where the Titanic struck an iceberg, their roof was broken through and a giant piece of ice rained down.
(TN: This one for the most part is correct: in 1975, the Melchis family of Bedfordshire, England, was watching a movie about the sinking of the Titanic (they never really said which movie...and before you ask, yes, this chapter was in 1997, but "THAT" Titanic movie (the James Cameron one with Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet) would not be released until December of that year, one day after it's American release, in Japan) when ice crashed through their roof)

128.
Kyouko: Those things had amazing fortuity.
SFX: Ki--n ko--n ka--n
Hiroshi: But why would fortuity continue like this limited to today?
Katsuya: Perhaps this is the act of a youkai of fortuity?
Kyouko: Well, Nube?
Nube: Ha ha ha, there should be that youkai but...
Nube: !
Nube: I feel it...a quite strong power in the school.
Hiroshi: Eh?
Kyouko: It can't be: there truly is a fortuity youkai?
Nube: This way...
Hiroshi: Huh!

129.
Voice 1: ...Wh...what is that, a ghost?
Voice 2: We can see it weakly too.
Voice 3: It looks like a shoujo manga.
(TN: The comment here is more or less about the "art style" of the goddess, which has a particular style usually seen in shoujo manga)
Voice 4: A pretty angel?
Nube: The "Goddess of Fortuity".
Kyouko: Eh!? Then that person is causing the fortuities?

130.
Nube: When that goddess is near, fortuities come easily...however, if too many fortuities are occurring in succession...
Kyouko: Ah.
Kyouko: Wow, she's flying, flying.
Nube: He...hey.
Katsuya: Interesting---it's going to lead us.
Makoto: What fortuities will happen?
Hiroshi: It seems like we're buying a lottery ice cream.
(TN: A "lottery ice cream" or "kujitsuki aisu" is ice cream on a stick which has a fortune or a lottery on it which usually has something interesting printed on it, usually for a lottery purpose of some sort)
Sign: Genkotsuya
(TN: Yeah, it's the same shop and the same old lady from #95; "Genkotsu" once again stands for "Fist")
Katsuya: Oh, that's cool--
Hiroshi: Win
Kyouko: Win
Miki: Win
Katsuya: Win
Makoto: Win
Old Woman: Hey, I won't be lied to by bad brats!
Voice: This is fortuity, fortuity.

131.
Hiroshi: What will happen if you dial a number randomly?
SFX: Pipopa
Kyouko: Hello?......Eh?
Voice: Kyouko! Isn't this Kyouko! It's me! Tomoko, who changed schools when I was in 2nd grade! It's been a while!
Kyouko: Eh---you're kidding----! I don't believe this!
Katsuya: Wa
Hiroshi: Ahaha, you fell into a gutter.
Katsuya: N There's something here.
Katsuya: Oh, even if this is fortuitous, it's a first-generation super-alloy with rocket-punch attached.
Hiroshi & Makoto: You have a premium with that. That appeared in KochiKame.
(TN: I don't know when it happened but if they say it appeared in KochiKame, it probably did somewhere down the line...)

132.
Makoto: Give it to me.
Katsuya: What are you saying? It's mine.
Hiroshi: All right, we'll decide it with janken. (rock/paper/scissors)
Hiroshi, Katsuya & Makoto: Janken!
SFX: Poi
Hiroshi, Katsuya & Makoto: Tie
SFX: Poi
Hiroshi, Katsuya & Makoto: Throw out a tie, throw out a tie, throw out a...
(TN: The "throw out a tie" bit is a typical part of "janken" in Japan: if two people tie in janken, they don't say "janken" again but usually say "aiko de poi" or "threw out a tie"...until someone wins)
Kyouko: Amazing fortuity: their ties have continued beyond a hundred times.
Miki: Amazi--ng.
Nube: ...What is this? It's just silly fortuities. Wouldn't there be harm like this...?

133.
SFX: Buu---n...buu---n...
Blimp Ad: Do you Hecom?

Nube: A...a blimp is falling?
Miki: Is this fortuity too!?
Kyouko: Kyaaaa!
SFX: Gui
Hiroshi: Kyouko!
Miki: We'll save you---
Kyouko: What you doing, dummies?
Hiroshi: Take off your backpack, quickly!
Kyouko, Hiroshi & Miki: Waa---

135.
SFX: Buu---n...buu---n...
Miki: Kya---
Hiroshi: Wa---

136.
Nube: Hiroshi! Kyouko! Miki!
Hiroshi: Nube!
Kyouko: Save us---
Nube: Damn it...what can be summoned by the goddess of fortuity isn't just good fortuities. She can summon bad fortuities too. Fortuities isn't a tcan'thing that can continue to occur.
Nube: You should have come to have fortuities occur throughout the world up to now...Why have you been constricted this time and remained in Doumori!?
Nube: He...hey wait, where are you going?
SFX: Bachi
Nube: !
Nube: ...Right! Those high-voltage lines have become a barrier...it can't leave from the town!
(TN: Strangely Nube uses "kekkai" for the "barrier" comment here, but usually that term is mostly just used for spiritual and magical barriers, not literal barriers like a high-voltage current)

137.
Nube: !! This is terrible---They're colliding with the high-voltage wire!
Students: Wa---
Nube: They can't! If we don't stop the eletric supply...we have to call the electric company...no, I won't be in time!
Nube: !!
Nube: I'll borrow this a moment!
SFX: Batsu
Boy: Eh, ah, hey!
SFX: Bu---n...

138.
SFX: Bari bari bari | Buchi
Goddess: !
SFX: Pachi...
Nube: Alright, I worked on a safety device and stopped the electric supply. With that, they'll avoid an electric shock...
SFX: Bofu! | Gugu---
Nube: !!

SFX: Biri (Rip)
Kyouko: Kyaa

(Useless) SUPPLEMENTAL EXPLANATION

#36: Fortuity

Long ago, there was a deep swamp in China; there lived a blind turtle who was the master of the swamp at water's bottom. This turtle came to rise to the surface just once in a thousand year, but today was just that day. At this moment, a large tree was fortuitously floating and fortuitously a hole opened in the tree. This hole fortuitously is the same size as the turtle's head, and this rising turtle fortuitously thrusted it's head into that hole. A fortuity that can't seem to possibly occur revealing itself is the old Chinese proverb of "The Floating Tree of the Blind Turtle" (Mouki no Fuboku)

By the way: on the sale date of Shonen Jump #45, which had appear the tale of "The Goddess of Fortuity", there fortuitously was this article published in a newspaper bought in a convenience store by the author.

"A Ring From a Potato!

Holland: Angelique Brower, a female nurse who lives in Eemedem, has discovered after 22 years a ring that she lost in a potato field when she was 8 within a potato."

The author doesn't have reason to always buy that newspaper; and fortuitously bought it just that day.

That truly was amazing fortuity.

TN: It's strange really: after the big deal Nube had with the 100th chapter (with that really weird and scary chapter with the "100th tale"), you would probably expect something as monumental for #200. But instead...we did get an interesting tale that probably feels more in line with the second hundred of the series than the first hundred: an interesting piece with another strange phenomenon occurring that incorporates Nube and his students. Of course, the chapter did make me think this: while I get the power of "good fortuity" vs. "bad fortuity", wouldn't it be rather ironic that all of this would be happening all at once regardless? Sure you could say that's the point of the whole chapter but you would think that somehow things wouldn't get as ridiculous as...well, a giant blimp causing chaos and capturing Hiroshi, Kyouko and Miki. I get that probably is the point but somehow the ending did seem to overemphasize it and take it all to the point of ridiculous. Prior to that it wasn't too bad a chapter though, with the whole aspect of seeing how so many coincidences and so much luck could occur all at once in a way that doesn't make it really seem like a rerun of Zashiki Warashi. Of course it was all tied to the goddess (who was really cute BTW) and somehow it was all just the perfect storm that made it all occur as it did when it did. But hey, I did find it funny that the "ring in the potato" thing occurred in real life just as it did the same time as the manga...I guess Noro-chan was on to something.
