TN: Before I get to the meet of my notes this time around, let's just say that this chapter was a very, very strange transitional period between the Under-Maruhage arc and the upcoming Hair Kingdom arc...but still good. I sort of was shocked that Sawai would combined an ending and a beginning into the same chapter but I guess he probably either wanted this cliffhanger or didn't have enough pages after the final defeat of Hydrate to have these first few pages in the last chapter. Suzu is just as air-headed as ever (but still lovable even if she's a tad lost with who her allies are...but that's what you get when you have a girl who uses a second-hand Don Patch suit), Halekulani really isn't worth being an ally, Hanpen seemed to stick around but didn't (while Torpedo Girl and Softon ran off...but will be back soon enough) and the omake this time (which actually is at the end of the volume but fits here due to that shadow at the end being revealed next chapter...though it's sort of obvious who it is) definately shows a lot of characters never really needed the Maruhage Empire or Tsurulina the 4th in the first place to be happy...well it's weird since you have a combination of those who obviously are loyal to the empire, freelancers...and Giga who really isn't Maruhage Empire at all yet took part in the tournament regardless. Oh, and while we're at it, a great farewell performance to Tsurulina the 4th...it's strange that for such a crucial and important villain, he did so little in the story itself. Guess abdicating the throne was the best thing he could have done...

So with all that other stuff cleared up, it's time for the meat of my conversation this time: HATENKO THE PLOT DEVICE...er, I meant "the feelings regarding what Sawai probably had planned and how it pertains to what's starting now". As mentioned in this chapter, we are finally entering what is essentially the climax of the classic Bo-bobo series: the Hair Kingdom arc. Bo-bobo's going home with his friends and allies to have a showdown with the two eldest brothers of Bo-bobo and Be-bebe: Bababa-ba Ba-baba and Bibibi-bi Bi-bibi. (of course that gets weirder and a bit more complicated...but we'll get into that later) Now if you think about this, this definitely seems like something Sawai was planning from day one with the series: the "Five Hair Siblings" were originally referenced way back in chp. 1 (trust me: though I can't recall what the translations out there say, my Japanese volumes has Bo-bobo and TUYOSI mention there were "Five Human-Type Hair Children" remaining in the Hair Kingdom...well not including Hatenko or humans who lived in the Hair Kingdom that weren't from there like Gunkan) and it was obvious with the way Be-bebe was handled that they would be a part of the story eventually. It is through the character of Hatenko that Bo-bobo can finally begin his journey home...but of course, considering it took Hatenko this long to get to it, you have to remind yourself of everything he has been through just to get to this silly moment in this very chapter. (which includes leaving the Hair Kingdom himself, fighting Hair Hunters, getting in a whirlwind romance with Torpedo Girl, getting the OVER Kill Seal, being found by the Hajike Gang, getting a new Oyabin in Don Patch, wasting a lot of time...and that's all before his first appearance in the manga!) It's sort of obvious he was the method somehow or another that was going to lead to this moment...but it made me think: how much of Bo-bobo as a manga series was really that needed before Hatenko finally made his move? Heck, how much of the series was crucial and seemingly in Sawai's master plan? Well while I am no genius, I think I've rationalized and ranked in various ways what "was" and "wasn't" supposed to be in the story based on all we know now and with where we are starting on the climax arc.

Arcs definately seeming part of Sawai's Master Plan:
-Intro Arc: Bo-bobo, Don Patch, Beauty & Heppokomaru were all from Sawai's first one-shots, as was the setup for Gunkan
-C-Block: Softon introed, Heppokomaru joined team
-Gunkan: Part of the original one-shots so his story was essentially figured out by Sawai for the most part
-"Hatenko arc": As we see now, Hatenko's intro was key both for setting up the OVER arc and for what we're seeing now. Plus, Purupuu's quick crushing was probably an obvious joke after Gunkan and some say Sawai wanted to do a few things in Evil Blood Mansion including having Kappa join...as much as I can't stand him.
-Hajike Block: More OVER setup, as well as having the big Hajike showdown with Rice and a plot point that will be crucial much later in this arc
-OVER: Third and just as well set up arc similar to Gunkan, just seemed too well thought out to be thrown in as is
-Be-bebe: Since it was the bridge for Hair Kingdom just as much as Hatenko, that fight was needed no matter where it happened
-Hair Kingdom: The climax of the series, which we're getting to now

Arcs that may or may not have been in the master plan but worked out regardless:
-A-Block: I don't know if I mentioned it before but Tennosuke was never meant to be one of the main characters or fighters. Heck, I don't even know if A-Block was on Sawai's mind at such an early point. But he became known after his silly cameo in chp. 2, Sawai got A-Block in relatively early...and one of the best characters in the series became developed
-Z-Block: The arc seems very disconnected compared to the rest of that part of the series outside the power structure...but Sawai's commentary regarding some characters there including Kibahage suggests that maybe it was part of his plan...but it does feel stand-alone.
-Halekulani: I want to say this was part of Sawai's plan but the arc feels disconnected after the amazing flow and setup he did with Gunkan and OVER...it's obvious he needed a final Heavenly King but I can't say whether or not he wanted to do it the way he did...but it worked, the arc was fun, end of story.
-Under-Maruhage (outside Be-bebe): Sawai's storytelling does seem to reemerge here after a lot of the randomness in the arcs between OVER and this...but the thing is that outside Be-bebe's appearance it does seem very stand-alone outside cameoing many of the crucial characters from every other arc with many newcomers. I mean it worked with stuff like Hydrate's backstory connecting to the Maruhage storyline and to Bo-bobo/Be-bebe's relationship but...I have weird feelings.

Arcs that felt completely disconnected and just "there", fun as they were:
-Cyber City: As many amazing things that came out of the arc, it's like a detour from everything: it's not the Maruhage Empire at all and just seemed there as a means to get another arc that was similar but slightly different from Halekulani. It worked with a lot of what it had but it really didn't need to be there for the full story to be told.
-Former Maruhage: This feeling may be controversial to many but, like Cyber City, I don't see anything here that connects to the main story Sawai wanted to get across. Of course it had a lot of things that worked out, especially for much later into the infamy that's Shinsetsu (as well as key character such as the 3rd & Hanpen), but the only thing that seemed to make it relevant to the actual storyline was Tsurulina the 4th just saying "go ahead, fight Bo-bobo if you want"...then again, I could put it above for introducing the "Hair Ball" concept that will re-emerge again in this arc but...I don't know if it's enough.

I know I've been rambling on and on, but I guess my point is this: none of us will probably ever know what Sawai was thinking but somehow looking at how the story did grow and evolve with some of the basics and with characters such as Hatenko (whom I still think is a plot device due to this chapter but did work out for what was needed), you could try to pick out what was going to lead to this moment and what was just fun for the ride.
