Deep in the cold and snow of the mountains, Nube has two major worries: one is to figure out how to stop a monstrous youkai from destroying everything; the other...dealing with the warring advances of Rinako-sensei and Yukime!

#217: The Thick-Snow Great Love Battle!
(TN: The title of this chapter is rather peculiar: the original title uses a Japanese term of "hakugin", which is literally "white-silver" or "silver white" when translated accordingly. However, "hakugin" is also a word that explains an attribute, being Japanese for an expression of "the attribute of having thick/deep snow", as is the color of a thick layer of snow when laying on the ground. Considering the snowy locale of this whole arc, I thought "Thick Snow" was the proper translation and thus went with that for this chapter title)

(Useless) SUPPLEMENTAL EXPLANATION
#43: Ryoumen Sukuna

Ryoumen Sukuna is a mysterious being that was introduced of the annals of Emperor Nintoku, "Nihon Shoki". It was a great youkai with a form as a grotesque monster that possesses two faces on it's two heads and has four arms and four legs, lives in the Hida region and torments the people of it's land. The Imperial Court dispatched it's army for exterminating the youkai and they shot it to death.

However according to the legend of the Hida Region, Ryoumen Sukuna was a protection god that was clad in a beautiful armor, a hero who fought an evil dragon that tormented people and truly the exact opposite. Why was this difference produced?

Perhaps there was some quarrel between the people of the Hida Region and the Yamato Imperial Court, who were the central government, in those times. According to the people of that side at the time, they thought it was Ryoumen Sukuna that fought the government armies. Therefore "Nihon Shoki", which was a historical writing written by the government, came to draw it as a heinous youkai.

So then if you were to say whether the figure drawn in the legend was true, that too is quite a dubious thing. As revenge for losing in the war, it was possible to draw it by beautifying it to the above by necessity. Actually, the midway of the description of both sides may be closer to its actual form.

When you untie a historical document or a legend, if you don't think over the thoughts to the perspective of the people it is written about, you won't see the truth.

Yeah, that's how I felt with the end of this arc. Even with status quo returned to how it is, I just wanted it over with since I really don't want to see a world where Nube has to put up with his teacher hitting on him and said moments getting him frozen half to death by Yukime. Honestly, this three part story just felt like a big mess that was more to advertise the Nagano Olympics and maybe try to restart something between Nube and Ritsuko...but the problem isn't that Yukime has won the war long ago more than it was more Minako-sensei's influence that had lead to her actions than anything Ritsuko-sensei could do. I get Ritsuko being less gaudy and pushy compared to Minako and that the whole influence coming through due to how she is, but at least when it was just Ritsuko-sensei it felt much more honest and interesting with the development of her character. Strangely even with how the chapter and the whole arc tried to continue her development, the last real major significant development was back in vol. 14. Since then she's had occasional usage with a couple of more normal situations, with her only real attempts at love being here (which turned into a mess) and in vol. 16 (which involved Yukime being...well...) If Ritsuko-sensei was going to try and restart something, it shouldn't have been in this sort of situation, particularly one where Yukime would obviously have an advantage and where something like this would happen where she would gain power only because she was a clone of Nube's old teacher. And Minako-sensei...she's just been more and more disturbing since the whole "super busty woman" incident in vol. 21. (which I still say was just bitchy and stupid on her part with Nube not at fault with whatever he does with the Oni no Te and no real proof that what he did was wrong) I get that nobody is perfect and that all people have faults, but it's like her character just became so altered and different these last few volumes. I'm not saying she wasn't like this before, since she did show a more gaudy personality when we saw her alive outside the tragic aspects, but the jealousy and trying to force aspects of love on Nube, even hitting on him regardless of being dead, 13 years his senior and fused with the woman he may have loved even though she was a teacher of his...it's like the more she hangs around, the less I really think of her. There really isn't too much else to say of the chapter itself: Yukime had a couple cute moments (the return of her "snowman" bit even though she seemed to not use it anymore since her power-up) but seemed to be just as annoying just to match with Rinako's action; and the whole "fake Gyokirin" aspect just was a means to return it to status quo once Ryoumen Sukuna was stopped. (and BTW: we don't get a real Gyokirin in this series...I can't spoil if or how Nube gets Baki under control but this is the last Gyokirin that they try considering they all seem to be fakes) But hey, what's done is done and we can finally move on...
