For a cold, emotionless youko like Tamamo, the concept of "emotion" is as foreign as an idea can be. But through a strange acquisition, he may finally learn the value of feelings...but is it really the right way!?

#222: The Day Tamamo Became Human

31.
Tamamo: This is my 13th starring role in total? Is it? It's come to be like that already...

32.
Sign: Plaza In Front of Doumori Station Konto "Just Hold on a Minute" Show "Hilarious"
(TN: There are a couple things on this sign I have to point out:
1. A "konto" is a lighthearted story usually with a comedic feel to it.
2. The "Suttoko Dokkoi" here I translated as "Just Hold on a Minute" due to the two separate words that are used: "suttoko" being "all of the sudden" and "Dokkoi" being "Hold on!" or "Hold on a Minute!" With both of them together, it just worked best as "Just Hold on a Minute".)
Comedian 1: Really, our popularity now has the force of a flying bird crashing...
Comedian 2: Dummy! If you're to say it, it's the force of a flying bird falling!
(TN: The joke here regarding this pun regards two different verbs tied to the same kanji. The first comedian ends up saying "ochiru", which can typically go as "to fall" but also has a meaning of "to crash", while "otosu", the proper word that the second comedian states to make the joke work, is the proper reading of the kanji, meaning "to fall". The joke here obviously is the mispronounciation of "otosu" as "ochiru".)
Kyouko: Ahahahaha
Hiroshi: A--musing--ahahaha
SFX: Kiki
Tamamo: What is so amusing, teacher?
Nube: What, you say? That, that.

33.
Comedian 1: A chef is skilled at kung fu.
Comedian 2: Why's that?
Comedian 1: Artichoke
(TN: I tried to make this joke work in English the best I could but somehow I know I screwed it up. The actual punchline of the joke in Japanese is "hocho", which is a type of kitchen knife and obviously referring to the "acho" callout that is the yell of martial arts star Bruce Lee. But since it really didn't sound like it would work, I ended up making it "artichoke", which is emphasized right can make itself into "acho")
Comedian 1: Do you know of check-ups?
Comedian 2: Yeah, it's that red stuff you put on french fries.
Comedian 1: Dummy, that's ketchup.
(TN: Another joke that was even harder to translate into English: the Japanese term that was introduced by the first comedian is "ningen dokku", which is the Japanese word for "Check-Up". However, the second comedian mistakens "ningen dokku" for "ningen doggu", or "human dog", and originally says the line as "It's the guy from Jump's Wild Half", referring to the notable 1996-1998 manga by Yuuko Asami which involved dogs who took human form. Of course since I couldn't really make the joke work to my advantage using "Wild Half", I just kept the "check-up" part and made the obvious joke)
Tamamo: Hmph, worthless.
Nube: What~~~
Kyouko: Well, well, it's because Tamamo isn't human.
Kyouko: He can't comprehend human laughter and sadness and all emotions.
Hiroshi: He is a cool youkai.
Nube: Heh! He's a pathetic being!
Nube: Someone like me enjoys himself li--ke this (Ahyahyahya Gehya Uhya Uhehe Gehe)
Hiroshi: You have to become a bit more cool...

34.
Sign: Doumori Hospital
SFX: Katsu katsu katsu
Narrator: Tamamo Kyousuke - Youko Tamamo
Narrator: His aim...it is to comprehend the "love" of humans, but even now it is without achievement...He is...a tad impatient...
Mother: Tamamo-sensei
Mother: I've heard...that you can perform spiritual treatments...
Girl: Ahahaha Eeheeheehee Uhehe

35.
Girl: Wa--h wa--h (shiku shiku)
Mother: She goes over and over in suddenly crying, laughing and getting angry like this.
Girl: What are you---you guy (Garuru...)
Tamamo: This seems like a possession.
Tamamo: Kotowaribukuro. Within this is packed the intense emotions of humans. Those possessed by this seem to become influenced by intense emotions...
(TN: This being doesn't exist, but the full translated name is "The Sack of Reason")
SFX: Dokun dokun dokun

36.
Tamamo: Hinrou Kyomon Reidai Bunkyoku Rentei Bukyoku
Tamamo: Hagun!
SFX: Ka
Kotowaribukuro: Hyu----!
SFX: Becha | Kyu--
Tamamo: It won't bother you anymore. Go home and rest at ease.
Mother: Thank you very much.

37.
SFX: Piku piku...
Tamamo: ...A youkai that can present emotions...
Hiroshi: Hey~~it's Saturday, so let's~~go and play~~~
Nube: Huh--
Nube: That's trouble to b--e. Don't have mon--ey.
(TN: Nube ended up rhyming here with his approach of "Mendokusa--i, Okane na---i", so I decided to make it rhyme in English as well)
Voice: Nueno-sensei! Let's go play!
Nube: ?

38.
Tamamo: Hahahahaha...
Nube: Wh...what are you planning, Tamamo!!
Tamamo: Eh, what's that, teacher? Nothing has changed at all from always.
Tamamo: With that, a minor joke. (Ehem...)
Tamamo: A nurse can't work with a certain doctor. Because of which, she got per pay docked.
(TN: This was another really strange joke that just couldn't work at all in English but works wonders in Japanese. The basis of the joke is the setup, which basically translates into "A nurse seems to have many mothers." The punchline though, in Japanese, is "Naasu wa mama", which literally is "it's a situation of nurses" with "mama" being either a word for "mother" or "situation"/"case", but works because of the other usage of "mama", with the first time using the proper version of "okaasan"'. It just coudn't translate at all in English, so I went with the pun you saw here about "pay docking")

39.
Tamamo: A ha ha, ahahaha---
Nube: It's like he's an American laughing at an American joke...
Nube: Did you eat something bad?
Tamamo: No no
SFX: Chi chi
Nube: Well, before doing that, let's go out on the town.
Tamamo: Aah, what good weather. This is truly a feeling that is cheerful. Is this the feeling called "fun"?
Tamamo: Mu
Cat: Nya--
Box: Please adopt

40.
Tamamo: Thats pitifully cold...I'll adopt you.
Cat: Nya--
Kyouko: Hey, how could it tru--ly come to this?
Tamamo: Oh, there there, you were lonely. Haha
SFX: Suri suri
Nube: He's completely broken.
Tamamo: Teacher! Let's see a movie!
Movie: Farewell of Love and Sadness
Sign: Doumori Piccadilly
Nube: I'll go for the children.
Nube: Wha--t a boring movie--I wanted to see a shiver-making horror film...
Nube: Uwaa!

41.
Nube: Hey, you truly are strange.
Tamamo: Am I?
Tamamo: Huhuh!
Tamamo: Oh...Oooh~~~
Tamamo: What a beautiful person. You have now surely echoed the bell of my heart.
Woman: Eeh

42.
Nube: Se...seriously?
Tamamo: Of course.
Tamamo: Ooh, the throb of this heart...Is this the thing called love? God, you that have made this magnificent emotion are a genius.
Kyouko: It's embarrasing here listening to him.
Tamamo: Can't you come together with me for dinner?
Woman: Ye...yes, I'll be glad to.
Nube: Hey hey--!
SFX: Don!
Punk: Be careful you guy.
Tamamo: What's that: you're the one who came to hit me.
Punk: Shut it, you delicate man.
(TN: The punk refers to Tamamo as "yasaotoko", which is a man of delicate features or gentle emotions)
SFX: Muya muya...
Tamamo: Are you mocking me?

43.
Tamamo: Unforgivable!
SFX: Dogaa
Nube: Huh...! Is he seriously angry!? If he hits a human with the power of a youko...
Tamamo: Die! Die!
SFX: Doga doga
SFX: Bishu bishu

44.
Woman: Kyaaaaa!!
Nube: Stop it, Tamamo! He's dead!
Tamamo: Haa haa
SFX: Dosa
Cat: Nya---
Nube: What's the matter with you today...Explain it from the start.
Tamamo: I've...obtained human emotions with a certain method. The me of now comprehends human laughter, sadness and anger.

45.
Tamamo: And...even the emotion called the "Love" of humans, which was my heart's desire.
Tamamo: If it was now, I wouldn't lose even if I fought you.
Nube: Do you truly have human emotions?
Tamamo: Fu
SFX: Suru (Slip)
SFX: Dokun...dokun

46.
Nube: That's...Kotowaribukuro...that thing is fake emotions. What you are feeling doesn't surpass fake emotions that it manufactures.
Tamamo: Shut up!
Nube: It possesses the heart, unreasonably presents it emotions and makes it go wild, destroying the heart!
Tamamo: Silence! With me, I can master it!!
Nube: Stop it! Your heart is breaking down.
Tamamo: Shut up!
Nube: Ah
Cat: Nya--
Mouse: Chu--
SFX: Kikikikiki
Nube: !!

47.
Woman: You ran over a cat.
Man: That feels bad--I dirtied the tire---
Tamamo: Ah...ah.
Tamamo: Uwaaa
Tamamo: Ugaaaa

48.
SFX: Dogaa
SFX: Gua | Wa---| Kya---| Zugagaga
Nube: Tamamo
Tamamo: Diiie~~~!
SFX: Bari bari bari
Nube: Stop--- (to himself) No! His heart is being completely manipulated by Kotowaribukuro...!
SFX: Gu

49.
SFX: Za---n
Kotowaribukuro: Guee
SFX: Za za

50.
Nube: You were stupid, you who are Youko Tamamo. You made a major mistake this time.
SFX: Shuuu...
Tamamo: Haa haa
Tamamo: ...Even if you didn't say it, I understand.---I saw the serious error...I'm grateful that you saved me.
Tamamo: Adios.
Kyouko: That's somewhat pitiful.
Nube: That wasn't even like him...why was he impatient over that thing...
Hiroshi: That was...a tad strange...

51.
Voice: There isn't much time...anymore
Nurse: It's an emergency, doctor!
Nurse: What were you doing?
Tamamo: It was nothing.

52.
Dr Tamamo's
Examining Room of Love

Welcome to the Examining Room of Love. This here is a corner where the results of the research of I, Tamamo Kyousuke, the researcher of love, will be published. Let's talk about love together with me.

The first theme will be "about the difference of love and desire".

Even if you say they're love in a word, its actually two different things...one is "Eros, taking love", the other is "Agape, presented love".

For example, if you come to like someone, you want this person to become your lover and stubbornly dangle by them without thinking of the partner's feelings, then it's "taking love". Saying that, this is already a crime that's called stalking. Conversely, if you devote yourself to it even if you're thrown away for the one you love, then that is called "presented love".

Amist these two kinds of love, if you're to say which is real love, then its the latter without going on forever.

The former borrows the name of love, it is only mere desire. Similar to seeking water for healing a dry throat, it doesn't surpass seeking love. (This is called "Thirsty Love") The form of love like this gives birth to jealousy and hatred and comes to be the root of all crime.

The love tht I've discovered within Nueno-sensei and that I think I want to obtain is unrelated to this sort of selfish desire. Fu, well, this thing I think can't even be explained now to this intelligent everyone but...

Well then, since it's tedious even if I continued too drawn out, let's leave it there this time. My second appearance is not yet fixed now. I think I'l make it as near as possible, but anyway there isn't too much time left for me...

With that, until the day we meet again, adios.

(TN: A couple things
1. I need to go into a bit further on the two "terms" Tamamo mentions regarding the difference between the types of love: Eros and Agape. In actuality, there are four loves that are revealed in Greek text, the other two being "Storge", or "Affection" and "Philia", "Friendship".
-Eros is the term that speaks of "intimate love" or "romantic love", tied to the "passion" or "desire" aspect brought up here.
-Agape is seen as "unconditional" or "sacrificing" love, the one that allows for one to make sacrifices to allow for the betterment of the well-being of all. This term is more notable due to the concepts being tied to Christianity and their ideas of Jesus as the "sacrificial love for man".
2. The term Tamamo uses for "Thirsty Love" is literally "Katsuai", with the "Katsu" standing for the kanji for "thirst" or "parched".)

TN: I think this chapter should be nicknamed "the chapter where I realize reinterpreting comedy for translation really shouldn't be my day job". Seriously, this was an interesting chapter where Tamamo dealt with things youkai like him really shouldn't thinking it was going to give him the true answers regarding "love", and in some ways you could say the whole affair did give him more insight even with the means by which he would do it nearly driving him insane. (though you do wonder about the ending with Tamamo burying the kitten and whether that was mere obligation due to what happened prior or something he wanted to do deep within himself) And while some could say that it threw Tamamo to the extreme just to show the problems with emotion and that maybe he should have found another way to reach and learn these things without being thrown into a situation where it would obviously be a negative. (it's not like youkai are completely emotionless...see Yukime...but obviously youko don''t have it due to their nature of being accurate thinkers and using these sorts of things just to manipulate and control others) But what killed me with this chapter wasn't the actual content but the jokes at the beginning and Tamamo's little joke when he first becomes 'that'. Japanese jokes just don't work in English and I try my best to make it so...but ultimately it just turns out to be a mess if you think too much about it. Do you realize how much I contemplated that "nurse" joke...well I guess after all that, I need to move on.
