For some beings, determining who they are is easy, but it isn't as such for all of them. Such is the case of a young demon who has a peculiar decision it must make...and it may need Nube's class to help it along!

#223: Succubus and Incubus

(TN: A slight reminder since it will be important: "kun" is an ending that usually is tied to male characters, while "chan" is an ending that usually cutens things and is generally used for females)

Nube: This child is a "Muma" child. Muma is a demon that comes to do temptation when sleeping at night. For a man, it comes as a succubus, the form of a beautiful woman, but for a woman, it is an incubus, the form of a handsome man.
(TN: As I explained way back in the Supplemental in Vol. 2 (#22), I keep the term "Muma" (Dream Demon) for the description of this being because it does not specifically mention it's gender, merely what it is. The being has a meaning of both "succubus" and "incubus", and therefore calling it one would be a disservice to the other, thus why I merely make of it as "Muma" when referring to the creature)
Nube: However, when succubus and incubus are children, they're hermaphroditic demons like Mumu. When they become about 10, they seem to completely transform into whichever one way, man or woman.
(TN: The term "hermaphroditic" here is actually in Japanese "Ryousei Guyuu", which is "possessive of both sexes". It also has a translation of "androdynous", which could infer the attributes of both sexes, but I thought "hermaphroditic" worked better in the case of someone like Mumu)
Nube: However since Mumu was born and raised in the human world, it doesn't have an indication of which to transform into yet.

Ultimately, I had to make two different readings for it just to not spoil what happens next)

(Useless) SUPPLEMENTAL EXPLANATION
#47: Succubus

Succubus (likewise "sukyubus") is a Muma who takes the form of a female. With a Latin word with the meaning of "To suck in" as it's etymology, it is said to tempt when it appears in the dreams of men and suck in their life energy. In particular, they easily target young priests who participate in a lifestyle of abstinence. This is said to be for plundering spiritual power for antagonizing Satan by sucking this life energy.

There exists the Incubus (likewise "inkyubus") as a similar ally, but those are male Muma with an etymology of the Latin word of "to ride up".

They both are said to be subordinates of Lilith (likewise Lilit), the Night Queen.
(TN: The alternate readings are all from the original and were made out in a way to keep them somewhat. The "Sukyubus" and "Inkyubus" were the original Japanese readings for both "Succubus" and "Incubus" and were made the alternate to not confuse with the direct reading. Meanwhile, 'Lilit' is an alternate Hebrew reading for "Lillith" and made sense to be the alternate here)

TN: Admission time going in here: gender identity and issues is really something I understand but it is one that I know is going to get me in trouble with what I may say here. There are many men out there who are born women and vice versa, let alone there are no real traditional "roles" that should exist that should be bound by one's gender or gender identity. I know who I am and what I want and sort of understand those who have a different view of what they want from life and who they are. Sure it may not be what I want but I understand those who make this decision and therefore they should live their lives as happily as they can with the identity they forge for themselves. But before I get too far, I need to remind myself: this is a manga script, not a forum for speaking about gender identity so...let's get to the chapter.

The chapter is an interesting one that seems to more or less be bound by some of the traditional roles of gender in Japanese society, but that's sort of what's expected for a magazine that for the most part is for kids. At their age, they have only a bit of comprehension regarding people being born men or women and can't get into the complexities of gender roles or hermaphrodites or transgendered people or whatnot. As it stands, Mumu is born both male and female and, through it's movement through Nube's class, ultimately decides it's gender by the one that stimulates it, becoming the opposite. While one into TG transformations could get a turn-on by the ending of Mumu's final decision (and a clear as day transformation), one could also wonder why this idea of "excitement" would be the means by which the final sexual transformation would occur. It's really hard to determine what was going on in Mumu's head when the final transformation took place, considering that her (well I'm referring to Mumu now as "her" or "she" due to the finale, but it's mostly an "it" for most of the chapter) heart was going in one direction while her mind was speaking out in another. She showed excitement seeing Hiroshi thinking it was cool that he had the abilities to fight back, yet her heart showed this was less about coolness and more a sexual turn-on, perhaps explaining why I had to be careful with some of the words near the end or else give away the ending. (and we wouldn't want that) Obviously arousal wins out over anything the mind comes up with, but of course that just makes Kyouko angry...again...Hiroshi really is a playboy with youkai girls, huh?

Of course, prior to that decision, it was interesting to see that Mumu really did want to forge her own way in defining what she wanted after seeing both the positives and negatives of both sexes. She seemed to like the action of males, but didn't like the grossness; while she liked the feminine traits of being female but didn't like their hiding away their faults in things such as gluttony or obsessive gossip. One could say that maybe Mumu wanted to forge an identity with a bit of both, but it really had probably nothing to do with sexual transformation at all. Mumu liked things about being male, likewise she liked things about being female. She wanted to be a good person, but was drawn away by the faults thus leading to her feelings of wanting to stay as is. You could say many of these things really have nothing to do with gender and it shouldn't play into it, but the series with it's age limit really doesn't want to get into those sorts of things and for the most part just wanted to give her a comprehensive view of both before the final decision. It's tough to say whether this really is part of the superficial concepts of gender but with a society so used to these concepts for so long, it sort of was believed as such...

There I am making mountains out of molehills again. Let's just leave it as such: you could make more out of it but we're limited by the direction the series takes for who it's for and that probably explains why we had what we had. It was a good chapter but you could make way more out of it that could keep you here all day...but with something important and massive coming up, I think we'll just leave it at that.
