#17 Merry-go-round
Shizuku- Can’t tell……
No matter how I think about it, there’s not such a difference.// Certainly the two Italian wines both feel stronger and richer compared to the French ones, but the indescribable delicate balance in the French wine has to be considered too……
Page 174
There’s got to be a reason for Mr. Honma not liking it that much.// Miyabi- Maybe it’s just not his taste. I mean he does seem infatuated with Italy……
Miyabi- I guess not.// Being able to tell whether a wine is from Italy or not in an instant just by smelling its aroma is a feat you can’t do without having drunk many other countries’ wines.
Shizuku- Yeah, the guy probably came to this wine department for a reason.// Just like I came here since I’m Kanzaki Yutaka’s son.
Miyabi- But what about Kawara Ge or the temp worker Kawabata?// Shizuku- About that,
the scores those two put down seem to not be far from the mark, don’t you think?
Page 175
Kawabata might’ve been a little extreme, but she clearly separated the ones she liked and didn’t. I feel like the marks are quite close to what the everyday consumers would say.// Miyabi- You’re right. Dividing them into likes and dislikes, she must sense something similar to what I sense.
Shizuku- And Kawara Ge has a kind of complicated way of marking the wines, no?// Miyabi- Huh?// Him?
Oh, this might actually be…
Shizku- Huh? You understand what this 4~5 means?// Miyabi- Yeah. It’s used to say that when he drank it today, it was a four, but in the future when it’s matured it could be a five.
Shizuku- Well how about this ‘6+’?// Miyabi- It’s kind of like a growth rate. It means that it might become better than a six in the future. It’s something Robert Parker Jr. started and critics like to use.
Shizuku- I-I didn’t know…… it meant something like that.// Miyabi- He didn’t say anything and seemed like a pretty passive guy, but he might actually be a real wine maniac……
Page 176
Shizuku- If that’s true, our company seems to have picked the right people.// Miyabi- It’s getting exciting, huh.
ああ
Shizuku- Yeah.
This wine department might actually become something great. // Miyabi- Yep. The ‘Drop’s of God’ and the ‘Twelve Disciples’ are something we need to think about, but first we should work on getting this department on the right track…… right?
Shizuku- To do that, we need to do something about that ‘Italian Chosuke’……// Miyabi- Heh, you said it.
Page 177
But it’s okay. If we talk to him, I’m sure he’ll understand―// Either way, it’s wine he likes.
Shizuku- You’re right.
Here’s to the bright success of Taiyo Beer’s wine department.// Cheers!
Page 178
Honma- ―And so, Taiyo Beer’s wine department will// only handle Italian wines. That’s all!
Shizuku- W-Wait just a minute Mr. Honma!// Honma- Is something wrong, Kanzaki?
Shizuku- I can understand wine from places like America or Chile, but for a wine department in the beginning to exclude wine from the best place, France, and only handle wine from Italy is unreasonable. // Honma- You say France is the best place for wine!?
Shizuku- It is, right?// I mean……
Honma- Stronzo!
Page 179
The best place is Italy! Wine is originally from Italy during the Roman period. It’s been there quite longer than France.// It makes me sick that you didn’t even know that and came to this wine department.
Shizuku- Even if its history is older there, it doesn’t mean it’s the best place!
Not many days may’ve passed since I started learning about wine, but// I know at least that France is the largest exporter of wine in the world!// Especially for Japanese, when you say wine, it’s normal that France comes to mind.
We’re finally starting a wine department, but if we only handle the ‘minor league’ Italy’s wines, we’ve no idea what will happen!// Honma- M-Minor league~!?
Page 180
Honma- You punk! You want me to mess up that wimpy face!? Huh!?
Shizuku- I’m not scared of you, you Italian Chosuke.
Miyabi- Both of you, stop it!// Kawara- Just a minute. Let’s be calm here, okay?
Kawabata- SHUUUT UUUP
Page 181
Phew
What’re you doing. Guys just go right into violence to try and fix things.// We’re talking about wine now, right?
Then why don’t we decide this with wine!?// Kawara- Sure. That might work.
What do you think about this?// Italy vs. France. We’ll drink both and decide, okay?
Page 182
Shizuku- Like this Italian Chosuke would play fair with something like that. He puts a 0 without even drinking wine.// Honma- Those wines aren’t worth being drunk!
You’re the one who can’t understand the deep and profound Italian wines, what with your tongue being defiled by that French wine.
Miyabi- T-Then why don’t we have the company workers drink them?
え?
Both- Huh?
We’ll have them taste the wine after work at the exit and with blind tasting, have them choose which is better!// Right? Then it’ll be fair, no?
Page 183
Shizuku- I see. That’s……// Honma- Signorina!
What a great idea!// Mmm~// E-Eee~
Hey, Kanzaki!// You ain’t got any problems with that, right? If we have them compare, you can’t argue the truth.
Wine made from those stuck up, sour French, always talking with their mouth,// couldn’t ever beat the masterpieces made by the bright characteristics of the Italian people! Wah-ha Wah-ha Wah-hahahaha.// Written- It’s not like you make wine with personality……
Ummm, could I say something?// Honma- What is it Mr. Kawara?
Page 184
Why don’t we compare 3 bottles each?// And we’ll limit them to prices consumers can buy.
For example, one bottle under 2000 yen, one under 3000 yen, and one under 4000 yen, okay?// Written- Also, we don’t have much money……// Miyabi- Ah, that’d be great.
Miyabi- If we import wine, that price range would be safe.// Shizuku- I don’t mind.
At that price? Hehehe, I couldn’t ask for better.// With those conditions, this match is more and more set.
Page 185
Hey Kanzaki! You got one week.// Go around and shop for garbage. Then even if you don’t want to, you’ll find out,
the true nature of the stuck up French women.
Kawara- But we’re still in a meeting. Hey……// O~so~le~ Mi~o~
Page 186
Fujieda- I see. That’s a bit of an unfair match.
Shizuku- Huh?// Fujieda- I tend to drink all wine equally, but French wine compared to others seems a little high priced.
I guess it’s like that because even if the quality is not so great, just for being from France it can sell at a higher price.// Shizuku- Yeah?// Miyabi- It seems like that.
About half of the 20 wines I had gathered too were French wines, but// trying to get decent quality wines, they were all over 2000 yen. And there were some wines from Chile that were only a little more than 1000 yen that I thought were good. In Italy there are countless small wineries so it’s not so difficult to dig up a cheap gem.
Page 187
Fujieda- Both of you, drink this.
Shizuku- Eh? You’ll treat us again?// Fujieda- No, I’ll have you pay for this one.
But it’s fine you pay at the retail price.// Shizuku- I have to go…
Fujieda- Just go ahead and drink.// Shizuku- No! If it’s not free I won’t drink. I don’t even have a home anymore!// Miyabi- Wah.// This is good!
Shizuku- Eh? Yeah? Let me try.
Page 189
Fujieda- What did you feel,// Shizuku?
Shizuku- A carousel.
It takes you on a short but slightly enjoyable trip riding slowly to music, elegant and showy like a music box―// I felt the enjoyment of the merry-go-round at an amusement park.
Page 190
Fujieda- You’re expressions are// as interesting as always.
Right, this wine doesn’t have the energy a roller coaster has, and it doesn’t have the scale of a Ferris wheel either.// But I also think that the flavor of this wine is full of variety that can please the drinker enough― a short trip.
Miyabi- Yeah, how can I say… After an attack from a young freshly squeezed orange, there’s a relieving aroma of almond that lingers and then goes away.// It’s a great wine that leaves you wanting to drink another glass right away. That I think is why it might be like a carousel at an amusement park.
Fujieda- But the biggest appeal of this wine is
the price.// 1760 yen?// With this price even you two could drink it casually before pay day, right?
Page 191
Le Haut-Medoc de Giscours// It’s a table wine made from a winery with a long history in Bordeaux’s Margaux village, Chateau Giscours. The fields are in a lower level area named Haut-Medoc.
But as you found out drinking it, the quality is at least that of a wine more than 3000 yen. Of course, it gets the benefit too of being a ’00 wine, a great vintage, which brings up the quality.// Miyabi- Let’s go with this for the wine under 2000 yen.
Hmmm, I don’t know about that. It’s not that easy to get a ’00 vintage for this wine. Even here, that’s the last bottle.// Miyabi- What~// Shizuku- And no matter how good it is, it won’t satisfy that Italian Chosuke.
Even if I win the match, we might not have a choice and not import the wines. French wine is stuck up and is given a high price.
A ’00 Bordeaux is a special vintage and since the qualities good and it’s cheap, it’s just as hard to get as it’s popular……
Page 192
But thanks to you, I’m starting to see a little hope.
They’re out there to find. I’m going to find them.// A French wine that’s easy to get a hold of, and yet, one that makes everyone feel happy.// Without a doubt―
