遠縁のウマクおじさん一家は遊牧で暮らしている

移動しながら羊を育てて毛や肉を売るのだ

昔はこの辺にいたんだけど
-They stayed here a long time ago.
だいぶまえにもっと西のほうに行っちゃって
But they left to go west.
土地の使用権とかいろいろあったみたい
They had various rights to the land.

それがまたこっちに戻って来てるらしいんだ
Karluk: Now it looks like they’re coming back.
父様が行商の人から聞いたんだって
My father heard it from some merchants.

やっと渡せた
I’m finally done.

父様がそう言って取り出したのは

素晴らしい細工の入った小刀の鞘だ
A beautifully worked knife sheath.

頼まれて作ってもらっていたんだが
Karluk’s dad: I was asked to make this.
出来上がるまえに行ったしまったからなあ
But they left before I could finish it.

他人に預けるわけにもいかんだろ
Karluk’s dad: I couldn’t entrust it to anyone else.
