The one I heard when I was a child, goes like this...

Far away in ancient China...
Hikoboshi, a poor youth who raised cows, fell head over heels for Orihime, an angel who came to the ground to bathe

He hoped to marry Orihime, no matter what. So, he hid her celestial robe, so she couldn't return to heaven

Over time, Orihime began to love pure-hearted Hikoboshi from the bottom of her heart. They married and passed the days by in happiness

But Orihime's parents were gods, and they forbid their daughter'smarriage, and tore them apart. With a hairpin, they drew a line between them

The line instantly formed a large Milky Way, seperating them, so they could no longer meet. From then on, filled with sadness, Orihime would break down crying every day

The gods were saddened by their daughter's pain. So if Hikoboshi longed for her, once a year... on July 7th, a bridge would form on the Milky Way, and they would be allowed to meet

That is the story of Tanabata
