First, the image show clearly it's a double layer defense, with a smaller circle outside served as a point to disperse a little the attacking spell. Since they use both defensive spell in one place it's stronger and more effective. And perhaps the teacher mean they use their attack spell in tandem so the attack became more concentrated so it's stronger.
Second, is the word "slanting" correct? I puzzled all over the word since its meaning and the meaning the paragraph is not the same (I think)
An aside:
Perhap due to Negi leveling up so the cards' range of magic transferrence became larger and Yue's card now appear active.
Please notice I didnt mean to say you translate the wrong words, precisely. I want to question whether the words you used explained fully the meanings inside the text. IN that case, even if you used correct words, the context may not necessary be explained properly.

it's the original problem of translated materials. More often than not the translator is required to explain properly the context, not just the words or sentences.
Ah well...
