Title: The Fifth Circle

Dante: Ugh...
Again, such a foul and alien stench...

Virgil: This is the lake.

=== Page 172-173: ===
Dante: A black marsh...

Dante: What lake is this, that holds such dark waters?

Virgil: It has the name of Styx...
Look upon those souls mired in its depths!

Dante: They too are sinners?

=== Page 174: ===
Dude: Guwa! (Gasp!)

=== Page 175: ===
Dude: Uoh!

=== Page 176: ===
Dante: W... what is this!?
Why do they fight!?

Virgil: They are those souls whom anger overcame!

Virgil: Abandoning their bodies to pointless rage,
Those fools forever attack each other.

=== Page 177: ===
Virgil: For no reason do they hate each other,
Yet they never cease their belligerence.

Virgil: So goes their eternal mutilation.

=== Page 178: ===
Virgil: This too for certain know, that underneath
The water dwells a multitude, whose sighs
Into these bubbles make the surface heave,
As your eye tells you wherever it turns.

This hymn do they keep gurgling in their throats,
For with unbroken words they cannot say it...

Bubbles:
We...

Sullen were, in the...

Sweet air, which by the sun...

Is gladdened. Bearing...

Within ourselves, the...

Sluggish reek.

Now we are...

Sullen...

In this...

Sable mire...

=== Page 179: ===
Virgil: 'Tis the lament of those below, sullied
By those losing themselves in rage above.

In those bubbles which to the surface rise,
You hear their complaint and disparagement,
Dissatisfaction and vulgarity.

Dante: Oh, Maestro!

Dante: Therefore, is not their crime their maintaining
Of that bitterness never abandoned?

By bearing their sullenness, do they not
The proper order of the world oppose?

Virgil: Right! To be malcontent is not a crime,

Virgil: But one must face that dissatisfaction.

=== Page 180: ===
Virgil: Yet these wretched souls did not face themselves,
But only stewed within their resentment.

These who have fallen to here turned their rage
Upon others. They are those without care!

Girl: Uwaaaa!!

Girl: Damn you! It's your fault!

Girl: Gyaaa!!

=== Page 181: ===
Virgil: They pointlessly cursed the world in vain
And turned their discontent onto others!

And now they forget themselves in violence;
Corrupted rage spurs their brutality!

This is the Hell for those resentful souls!

=== Page 182: ===
Dante: What's that tower...?

Dante: On top of the tower, a burning flame?
What is it for? Or what does it signal?

Virgil: Look.

=== Page 183: ===
Dante: Oh! A small boat, swifter than an arrow!

Virgil: Yes; that is the ferryman of the Styx:

Virgil: The wrathful Phlegyas!

=== Page 184: ===
Text:
Thus ancient legends of long ago say:
Phlegyas, son of belligerent Ares,
Found his daughter with Apollo's seed sown,
And in anger that god's temple burned down:
So for this sin of resenting the gods
He was slain and down to Hades' depths cast.

* This Phlegyas is not, of course, the same Phlegyas from Greek mythology (Greek and Christian mythology don't mix very well). The name is used by Dante as an allusion.

=== Page 185: ===
Phlegyas: So have ye arrived, loathsome fell spirits?

I, Phlegyas, shall take you wretched souls
Across to the circle more dreadful yet!

=== Page 186: ===
Virgil: Ah, Phlegyas, Phlegyas, you cry out in vain!
For we wish to cross this lake and no more!

Phlegyas: What!?
Then who is it that summoned I, Phlegyas!?

Phlegyas: Ugh! Virgil, 'twas you, ye wretched bastard!?

=== Page 187: ===
Virgil: Since by divine will do we pass through Hell,
Shall you not ferry us across the Styx?

Phlegyas: Geh...

Virgil: Do not fear Phlegyas, Dante!
Let us go!

Dante: Yes, Maestro!

=== Page 188: ===
Phlegyas: I get it, we'll go...
You wanted to see Hell, so let us cross!

Impertinent bastards, now gaze upon
The next circle, bitter and sorrowful!

=== Page 189: ===
Bubbles: Wa, ha ha ha

=== Page 190-191: ===
Dude: Aaaaah

Dude 2: Save me!

Phlegyas: Move!

=== Page 192: ===
Phillipo: Hey!

Phillipo: Who are you?

Phillipo: And why to this wretched place have you come?

Phillipo: Will you take me with you, away from here?

Virgil: Entreat us not; we are but passing through.

Dante: Such a wretched soul...

Phillipo: Wait!
Please wait!
Please don't leave!
Do you not see that I am one who weeps!?

=== Page 193: ===
Dante: Wait... you I know, though you are all defiled.
You are Phillipo Argenti!

Phillipo: Yes! If you know me, then let me get on!
Surely you won't pass by my mournful face?

Dante: Silence, villain! Your power you abused,
As you ravaged my beautiful Firenze!

This lake is fit for such vermin as you!

May your tears forever fall in this lake!

Phillipo: No, you're mistaken, I am no villain!

=== Page 194: ===
Virgil: Disappear from my sight, you wretched swine!
May you sink, you beast, in the lake of beasts!

Dante: Damn you, Phillipo Argenti!

Phillipo: Aaah!

=== Page 195: ===
Phlegyas: Fufufu...
You did it, Virgil...
Hahaha!

Virgil: Che...

=== Page 196: ===
Phlegyas: Very violent, I like it!
Hahahaha!

Virgil: At last...

Dante: Eh?

Virgil: Draws near the city, that of Dis is named.*

Dante: The city of Dis...

* Dis was also the name of the god of the underworld in ancient mythology, who was later supplanted by Pluto/Hades. The name Dis has since become an alternate name for the underworld in general.

=== Page 197: ===

=== Page 198: ===
Dante: The sky shines bright vermillion, Maestro...
Like the sky over a field of battle...

Virgil: It is from the flames which charr the sinners;
What awaits us there is a flaming Hell.

Virgil: Fire eternal burning reddens the sky!

=== Page 199: ===

=== Page 200-201: ===
Dude: What!? You aren't dead!

Dude: Aren't you yet living!?

Dude: Enter not such a place!

Dudes: Impossible! / Leave! / A live person, in the city of Dis!? / Never!

Dude: Leave!

=== Page 202: ===
Dude: What is this!?

Who is this, that without death has come and
Goes through the kingdom of the people dead!?

Dude: Is Hell but an exhibition for you!?

Dude: Get out! No living person may enter!

Dude: Leave!

Dudes: Leave! [a lot]

=== Page 203: ===
Dante: Is not going farther denied to us?
Then,
Shall we retrace our steps together swiftly?

Virgil: Having come thus far, do you now falter?

Virgil: If you wish to return, then go, return!
Such a path is not fitted for the weak.

Free are you to leave, if such be your will!

=== Page 204: ===
Dante: Are you saying that you'll abandon me...?

Dante: Do you say that I must return that way,
Guarded by dread Plutus and Cerberus?

Dante: Such a thing is far beyond my strength!

=== Page 205: ===
Dude: Leave! Leave! Is this not the land of the dead!?

Dude: You dare come here, bastards!?

Dude: Turn around! Leave, cursed person alive!

Dante: Maestro...
Maestro, I plead, please abandon me not!

=== Page 206: ===
Virgil: Then come with me, and stray not from my side!
For through this city have I passed before.

Dudes: Come you by yourself, and let him depart,

Who has so boldly entered these dominions!

Let him return alone by his mad road;

Try, if he can; for you shall here remain!

=== Page 207: ===
Sfx: Aaaah, waaa

=== Page 208: ===

=== Page 209: ===
Virgil: Feh...
Such a situation...
Who has denied to me the dolesome houses?

Dante: Maestro... Maestro, please lead me to safety.

=== Page 210: ===
Dante: Is our path at hand ended by this gate?

Virgil: Fear not, for I will conquer in the trial,
Whatever for defense within be planned.

Virgil: Since our passage through here is guaranteed:
None can take from us, it by Such* is given.

* Here, referring to divine power.

Virgil: Ah, but... let us rest here for a while.

Virgil: Dante!

Virgil: Neither the dead nor villains can halt us.

=== Page 211: ===
Virgil: But, as you pass through this city of woe,
There will be great hardships and misery.

So gird yourself, Dante, for those hardships!

Virgil: For Dis... / is a city of agony!

Virgil: And they cannot repel us forever.
