Umizatou*: Nagatobimaru-sama!*

*Although I’m translating “Umizatou” as though it’s a name, it could also be translated as
“The Blind Man of the Sea” (which works with the character design) or “Leader of the Sea” (which also works as his job title).
*”Nagatobimaru” can be translated as “The One Who Flew A Long Way”

とら：うおっ！？
Tora: Whoa!

海座頭：長飛び丸さま、はやくっ！
Umizatou: Nagatobimaru-sama, hurry!


とら：だめだ、すごい油だっ、ふんばりがきかねえ。
Tora: It’s no good. There’s too much oil to get any footing.

とら：この油が稲妻も妻もはじいちまうんだ。。。
Tora: It’s repelling both my thunder and claws…


とら：どうする！？　どうしたらいい！？
Tora: What should I do? What CAN I do?


とら：ある！！あるぞ、こいつを切り裂き滅ぼせるものが！
Tora: There is something! He could slice right through this stuff.


とら：でもよ～
Tora: Aw, but~

海座頭：長飛丸さまーっ、わたしも御一緒いたしますぞーっ。
Umizatou: Nagatobimaru-sama, I shall come with you.


とら：まてーい！！
Tora: WAIT!


とら：おまえはくるな！今から雷ですきをつくるから、
おまえはは逃れて　海辺でアホづらさげてバカみたいに
遊んでる「うしお」という人間をつれてこい！
Don’t! I’ll use my thunder to create an opening so you can escape
Go get a human called Ushio. He should be playing on the beach like an idiot.


海座頭：に。。。人間と申されましたか！
Umizatou: Did…did you say a human?


とら：そうだ！そいつは「獣の槍」をつかえる。
運がよけりゃ　そいつがなんとかしてくれるだろ！
お人好しだからな！
Tora: Yes! He uses the Beast Spear. With luck, he’ll be able to do something.
He’s a soft-hearted simpleton!


海座頭：けっ獣の槍。。。！
Umizatou: The B-Beast Spear!

とら：そうだ。じゃ、こいつん中でまってるぞ！
Tora: Yes! I’ll be waiting inside!


とら：ヤツはわしのことを「とら」とよぶ。。。
Tora: The guy calls me [Tora].

Asako: ‘Morning!

おばあさん：あら、はやいねえ、麻子　　ほかのみんなは？
Grandma: Oh, you’re up early! How about everyone else?


麻子：うん、きのう大はしゃぎだったからまだ寝てる。昼までおきてこないと思うよー。
Asako: Well, we had too much fun yesterday so they’re still sleeping.
I don’t think they’ll be up till noon.


おばあさん：麻子は？
Grandma: And you?

麻子：なーんのなんの。遊ぶコトにかけちゃーもう！
Asako: Oh, nothing. I’m just going to hang out.


おばあさん：それじゃー　うしおちゃんと二人だけね。。。
Grandma: It looks like it’s just you and Ushio-chan then…


お父さん：ひっさしぶりだなー、うしおちゃん。
Asako’s Father: It’s been a long time, Ushio-chan.

潮：うん！
Ushio: Yeah!


お父さん：うしおちゃんがちっこい時にゃよく麻子と三人で組手やったもんなのになー。
Asako’s Dad: When you were a little squirt, we used to do karate kata* with Asako all the time.

潮：オヤジにゃ勝てなかったよ。
Ushio: I still haven’t beaten my Pops.


お父さん：ハハハ、　あの人は別よ！でもいいよなーいつでも親子でケンかできて。。。
Asako’s Dad: Ha ha ha, he’s something else! But it’s nice when parents and children can squabble…

* “kata” are a set pattern of karate moves for non-combat practice

お父さん：うちの麻子なんて空手にもうぜんぜんキョーミ示しやがらねえや。
Asako’s Dad: My Asako doesn’t show any interest in karate anymore.

潮：最初っからイヤがってたぜー。
Ushio: She didn’t like it from the get-go.


お父さん： ところで麻子の水着姿どーだったよ！オヤジかいうのもなんだが、
うしおちゃんけっこーぐっとこなかったか？
By the way, what do you think of Asako in her swimsuit?
I thought it’d be like your Pops said, that you’d be a little firmer about not coming…

潮：　なっな。。。
Ushio: Wh-what!


麻子：とーさん　蒼月―っめしだよーっ！！
Asako: Dad, Ushio, breakfast is ready!


麻子：どーせろくでもないコト二人で話してたんだわ。
Asako: What were those two good-for-nothings talking about?

お父さん：うしおちゃん
Asako’s Dad: Ushio-chan!

潮：ごめんよ　ごめんよ　ごめんよー
Ushio: Sorry! Sorry! Sorry!


皆：ごちそうさまー。
Everyone: Gochisousama. *


麻子：さてと！
Asako: All ready.

おじいさん：なんだ麻子どこかいくのか。夜、花火大会だぞ！
Grandpa: Where are you going, Asako? There’s a big fireworks show tonight!


麻子：まさか。お昼までにはもどるわよ。
Asako: No problem. I’ll be back by noon.


麻子：男のコとのヤ・ク・ソ・ク！
Asako: I have a d-a-t-e with a boy!

*”Gochisousama” or some form of this is said after every meal and whenever you have been treated to something nice.

潮：なんだよ、おじさんたちのそのなにかを期待した目はっ！
Ushio: What! Why are you guys looking at me all expectantly!


麻子：おーいっ！
Asako: Hey there!


タツヤ：きてくれたんだねっ！
Tatsuya: You came!

麻子：おおよ！スゴイもんみせてくれるっていうからきちゃったよ。
Asako: Of course! You said you were going to show my something amazing.


タツヤ：あそこの穴なんだよ！
Tatsuya: Yeah, that cave!

麻子：うん？　水神さまのとりい？子供の頃近くまで泳いだっけー。
Asako: Hm? By the Water God’s torii* ? I used to swim out to it when I was a kid.


タツヤ：ちがうよ。あそこのむかいの、この前、地震でくずれたトコ。。。
Tatsuya: No, it’s different. That one collapsed in an earthquake.


麻子：あら　昨日からヘリコプターがやけにとんでるわねー。
Asako: Huh, those helicopters have been flying all around since yesterday.

タツヤ：船がここんとこよくいなくなっちゃうんだってとうちゃんがいってた。
Tatsuya: My daddy says that a bunch of boats have been disappearing around here.


麻子：うしおなんて、ああいうのみたらバカみたいによろこぶなー。
Asako: Ushio sees stuff like this and he grins like an idiot…

タツヤ：。。。　そのうしおってヒト、ボクをたたいたヤツ。。。？
Tatsuya: …Ushio’s the one who hit me…?


麻子：ああ！あいつ血の気が多すぎるんだ！バカなヤツだからゆるしてやってね。
Asako: Ah! He’s just overly hot-blooded! He’s an idiot but you should forgive him.


タツヤ：あんなヤツ　キライだっ。
Tatsuya: I hate that guy.


麻子：あっタツヤくん、ちょっとちょっと！
Asako: Oh, Tatsuya-kun, wait a minute!


麻子：これでいってみよ！
Asako: Let’s try going in this!

*”Torii” are Shinto shrine archways that are also built around natural sites that are considered holy or sacred.

Girl: Where’s Asako? It’s already 1 o’clock.


女：麻子のコトだから心配ないってー。
Girl: Oh, don’t worry about Asako~

厚池：まさか　その男とよ～　
Atsuike: Oh no, is she with a man?

横尾：　バーカ！
Yokoo: No way!


潮：オレ海入ってくらあ！
Ushio: I’m going in the ocean!


潮：フン、そんなコト　オレのしったコトかよ！
Ushio: Hmph, that’s nothing I need to know about!

潮：まったく　とらもいねーし、どいつもこいつも！
Ushio: Jeez, Tora’s not here either. Everybody’s gone!


麻子：　うわぁ～
Asako: Wow~


麻子：不気味ね～　これが最近くずれてできた穴ねー。
Asako: It’s eerie~ This cave does look like it collapsed recently.

タツヤ：ボクはいつも上からしかみてなかったけど。。。
Tatsuya: I’ve only ever seen it from above…

タツヤ：おねえちゃん　ボート大丈夫？
Tatsuya: Oneechan*, are you okay rowing?

麻子：だいじょぶ　だいじょぶ、キミくらいから乗ってたんだから。
ははあ、こわいなあ？
Asako: It’s just fine. You just sit back and enjoy the ride, sir.
Ha ha, are you scared?


タツヤ：こっ、こわくなんかないよ。。。
Tatsuya: I’m not sc-scared.


麻子：そのトランシーバー大事なのね。。。
Asako: That transceiver is important to you, isn’t it?


タツヤ：お祭りの時母ちゃんにかってもらったんだ。。。
Tatsuya: My mommy bought it for me at a festival…

タツヤ：もっとかっこいいヤツがほしかったんだけど。。。母ちゃんがかってくれたから。。。
Tatsuya: I wanted something cooler but…my mommy bought this…

タツヤ：これ。。。もってるとおちつくんだ。。。
Tatsuya: It…makes me feel better…


麻子：よーし、じゃお母さんにこの岩穴のコトも報告だ！
Asako: All right, now you can report about this cave to your mother!


麻子：さてと。。。　帰ろうか！
Asako: And now, let’s go home!

*”Oneechan” literally means “older sister” but can be used with any young woman older than the person using it.

Asoko: Hey what’s going on?


タツヤ：おねえちゃん！
Tatsuya: Oneechan!


麻子：ボートが流されるわっ！
Asako: The boat’s drifting!

麻子：ああ！？
Asako: Ah!


麻子：穴に向かってる！？
Asako: We’re being sucked into the cave!


麻子：オールがっ。。。動かない。。。っ。
Asako: The oars…won’t move!


タツヤ：お。。。おねえちゃん。。。
Tatsuya: O-Oneechan!


タツヤ：　おねえちゃん！
Tatsuya: ONEECHAN!

Ushio: What’s that!?

海座頭：　うしお！　　うしお！！
Umizatou: Ushio! Ushio!

潮：なんだ　この感じ！？　誰かオレのコトをよんでやがる！
Ushio: What’s this strange feeling? It’s like someone’s calling me!


潮：誰だ！？ 誰だ！？
Ushio: Who are you!? Who are you!!

海座頭：　うしお！　うしお！　
Umizatou: Ushio! Ushio!


潮：ぬ！
Ushio: Ah!


潮：シャワー？
Ushio: From the shower?

Umizatou: You are Ushio?

海座頭：うしお。。。
Umizatou: Ushio…


潮：妖怪！？
Ushio: A youkai!?

海座頭：「とら」とおまえがよんでいるお方が。。。
Umizatou: The one you call “Tora”…


海座頭：おまえの力を借りたいとおおせられた。
　すぐに参上せい！
Umizatou: He has said he wishes to have your help.
Come now!


海座頭：あの方はあやかしの腹の中においでじゃ。
Umizatou: He is in the belly of the Ayakashi.


海座頭：「あやかし」とは。。。たとうなら身の丈なん里にもおよぶ海の蛇！
Umizatou: The Ayakashi is a sea serpent over two miles in length.


潮：なんでェ　ワケわからん。　妖怪じゃねーか！
Ushio: What the heck is he talking about! Another youkai!

潮：槍！　獣の槍だ！！
Ushio: I’ll get the Beast Spear!


潮：槍！
Ushio: The Spear…

おばあさん：どうしたんだ中島さんおちつきなさい！
Grandma: What happened? Calm down, Nakajima-san!


潮：槍は荷物と一緒においてあるんだ！
Ushio: I put it with the rest of the luggage!

おばあさん：あらうしおちゃん。
Grandma: Oh, Ushio-chan.

中島：こっこのトランシーバーから助けをもとめるタツヤの声が。。。
Nakajima: I heard Tatsuya’s voice calling for help over this transceiver…

トランシーバー：助けて！　ねェ、誰かきいてる！？
Transceiver: Help! Please, can anybody hear me?


潮：　麻子！？
Ushio: Asako!?


トランシーバー：助けてこわいよ～！
Transceiver: Help, I’m scared!

中島：タツヤっ！
Nakajima: Tatsuya!

おばあさん：あ、麻子っ。
Grandma: Oh, Asako!

トランシーバー：わたしたちのみこまれたのー
Transceiver: We’ve been swallowed-


トランシーバー：大きいな海ヘビみたいな怪物に。。。！
Transceiver: By a huge sea serpent monster!
