十郎： これでいいのさ。
Juurou: This is for the best.

十郎： この世にはオレ達のすみ家なんてないのかもな。。。
Juurou: There’s no place in this world for us to live…


とら： は～、いい「ゆ」だな～。
Tora: Ha~ This water is great~

潮： どこに温泉はいってハナ歌うたう妖怪がいるんだよ！
Ushio: I get in the hot spring and there’s a crooning youkai in it!


とら： だって、あのかまいたち兄弟が傷を治すのにいいからってよ～。
Tora: But I’m feeling good because the Kamaitachi siblings healed my wound.

潮： それにしてもよ。。。
Ushio: Even so…


とら： 人のはいってくるトコじゃうるせーだろ？
Tora: Are the places where people bathe this crazy?

潮： まあな。
Ushio: Yup.


（箱： あの闘いから数日たった。。。
オレ達は今、雷信、かがりの鎌鼬兄妹に世話んなている。
(Box: It ‘s been several days since the battle…
Now we’re being looked after by the Kamaitachi siblings, Raishin and Kagari.)

（箱： よく覚えてないが、闘いの直後からオレは気絶し
三日間眠りっぱなしだったそうだ。）
(Box: I don’t really remember it but I fainted right after the battle and
they let me sleep for three days.)


（箱： 考えてみりゃ　家を出発して三日間オレはろくにねないで
ヘンなヤツらと、やりあってきたんだもんな。）
(Box: Think about it In the three days since I left home,
I’ve been fighting with weirdos and never getting enough sleep.)


（箱： 女鎌鼬・かがりにやられた、とらの傷も治るまで
すこしかかるっていうし、）
(Box: The female Kamaitachi, Kagari, says it’ll take a little time for
the wound she gave Tora to heal.)


鎌鼬： どうかわたしどものもとでお休みください。
Kamaitachi: Please rest in our home.


（箱： オレ達の扱いをさらにバカていねいにするようになったヤツラにも
強くひきとめられたし、）
(Box: They’re treating us so insanely politely that it’s come to the point
they’re so restrained they can hardly move.)


（箱： とらとオレは傷と疲れが治るまでゆっくりするコトにきめたんだ。）
(Box: Tora and I have decided to take it easy here
until we’re less exhausted and our wounds have healed.


とら： おい。。。うしお、わしはな疲れてる。。。
おまえを食う気もない。。。　だから。。。
Tora: Hey, Ushio. I’m really tired.
And I’m not in the mood to eat you. And so…


とら： このクソ槍をどけんかいいいっ！！
Tora: Get the damned Spear out of my face!!


潮： わかったよ！
Ushio: Fine.

とら： それでもかわらんわい！
Tora: Always the same damn thing!


潮： お・ま・え・は、めんどくさいな！
Ushio: Y-O-U are such a pain!

とら： おお！それどんな術だよっ！？
Tora: Oo! What’s that technique?

潮： 知らねーの？　　水でっぽう。
Ushio: You don’t know? It’s a water gun.


とら： ふん　ふん
Tora: fuhn fuhn

潮： こーやって　こーやるんだよ
Ushio: Like this. You do it like this.


潮： 歌？
Ushio: A song?

歌： おきよ おきよ ねぐらのすずめ
Get up, get up, roosting sparrow*

*This is part of the song 蝶々(Butteryfly) which is in a famous 1st grade songbook


潮： 誰だろ？　すげーきれーな声。
Ushio: Who’s that? They have a really pretty voice.

歌： あさひのひかりの　さしこぬさきに
Song: Before the morning sunlight comes shining in


潮： 人がいるわきゃねーよ。。。な。
Ushio: I didn’t know there were any people here.


歌： ねぐらをいでて

潮： はーでもきらーなねーちゃんだなー。
Ushio: Wow. But she’s a really pretty girl.


とら： はー、うまそーな人間だなー。
Tora: Wow, she’s a tasty looking human.


潮： なっ、なんだよ　おまえっ！
Ushio: W-what are you doing!

小夜： あっ。
Saya: Ah.

Saya: I’m sorry…


潮： あっ、あのオレっ！
Ushio: Ah, no, I-


潮： ちょっ、あのオレっ　ごめ。。。！　オレ見る気は。。。！　あの。。。
Ushio: Wai- uh, I- I’m sorr- I wasn’t trying-uh-


とら： あの人間姿を消していたハズのわしを見ていたぞ。
フツーじゃねえな。
Tora: That human saw me even when I tried to disappear.
She’s not normal.


潮： 二ともあろうにのぞき男になっちまったあ
あああー　オレは　オレは　あああ
Ushio: This is the second time I’ve been a peeping tom!
Aaah, bad Ushio, bad Ushio!

雷信： それは小夜―でしょう。
Raishin: That was probably Saya.

潮： さや？
Ushio: Saya?


雷信： ええ、町の人間の娘です。　病弱とかで、どこで聞いたか
あの湯までわざわざはいりに来ているのです。
Raishin: Yes, the daughter of one of the humans in the city.
I heard somewhere that she comes especially to bathe in the hot spring
because of her weak constitution or something.


とら： いーからあっちいけよ
Tora: I’m fine, so get away!

かがり： ホータイを
Kagari: Let me check your bandage


雷信： 白い髪の力で我々妖怪を見る事ができるとか、
色々うわさを持つ者です。
Raishin: There are many rumors about her, such as that the power of her white hair
allows her to see youkai like us.

潮： うわー　オレはああ！
Ushio: Uwa! Bad Ushio!

潮： そんなコをのぞいちまったああ
Ushio: I peeped at her!


潮： とらー、あしたオヤジに電話いれるから町まで
背中にのっけてってくれよー。
Ushio: Tora, I need a ride on your back into town tomorrow to call Pops.

とら： うるせーっ！わしはおまえのクルマじゃねーぜ！！
Tora: No way! I’m not your car!


とら： わかった！　わかりましたよ！！
Tora: Okay, fine! FINE!

おっさん： 帰ったか小夜！　山で迷い死んだか、湯でおぼれたかと思ったぞ。
Man: Are you home, Saya? We thought you’d gotten lost and died in the mountains
or drowned in the hot spring.


おっさん： これから「オマモリサマ」の所へゆく。おなぐさめ申し上げろ！
まったく唯一の仕事の時にいないとは、しょうがないではないか。
Man: Now go to Omamori-sama’s room and keep her amused.
I just don’t know what to do! You’re not here to do the one job you have.


小夜： ごめんなさい。
Saya: I’m sorry.


おっさん： それよりどうだ、その湯は効きそうなのか？
Man: Leaving that aside, do you think the hot spring is effective?

小夜： はい。
Saya: Yes.


おっさん： ふん、いつもそんなコートを頭からかぶって辛気くさい。
おまえがいると空気まで重くなるわ！
Man: Fuhn, it’s irritating how you’re always bowing you head down.
Whenever you’re near, the air becomes heavy.


ババ： どうせおまえも母親の明代同様　長生きできぬものを。
今さら湯にはいって寿命をのばしたとて何になる？
Old woman: You’re the same as your mother Akiyo. You also will not be long lived.
Do you think you can lengthen your lifespan by bathing in the hot spring now?

おっさん： ま、　そういうな母さん。この娘にも明代のように「オマモリサマ」を
なぐさめてもらうのだから。
Man: Ah, don’t say such things, Mother. She keeps Omamori-sama entertained,
just like Akiyo.


おっさん： 「オマモリサマ」と話のできる白い髪の女の血筋が代々短命でも、
Man: The line of white-haired women who can talk with Omamori-sama is short-lived,

おっさん： 明代が死んだ後おまえを育ててやった分は、役にたってもらわんとな。。。
Man: But after Akiyo died and we raised you, at least you’ve proven useful to us.


ババ： 感謝せえよ、小夜。一年の半分を床ですごすようなおまえにも
仕事があるのだからな。
Old Woman: You should be thankful, Saya. I do your job
while you spend half a year in your sickbed.


ババ： それは代々ここに祭られている神を母親の明代がやったように
なぐさめ続けることさ。
Old Woman: Now, as your mother Akiyo did before you,
continue to comfort the god that has been enshrined here for generations.


ババ： それだけがおまえのいる理由さ。。。
Old Woman: That’s the only reason you’re here…

なぐさめておくれ！　我が家の神を。
Old Man: Well,
go entertain our household god!


おっさん： ちっ、こんな大事をあんなたよりないヤツにまかすとは、
我が娘ながらまことに不本意だ。
Man: Ch, I’m truly reluctant to leave such an important task to
such an unreliable person, even if she is my daughter.

ババ： ひひ　言うな。おまえの妻だった明代もあの娘も白い髪じゃった。
あやつらをして神の機嫌をとらせとけば、
Old Woman: Hi hi, don’t say that. Your late wife Akiyo and your daughter both have white hair.
So long as they curry favor with the god,


ババ： 。。。我が鷹取家は安泰じゃ。
Old Woman: The house of Takatori will have security.

Saya: How are you today, Omamori-sama*?

*An “omamori” is a good luck charm.

小夜： 今日は何をして遊びますか。お手玉しましょうか？
Saya: What would you like to play today? Shall we play with otedama*?

*”Otadama” are cloth beanbags children (especially girls) juggle for fun

オマモリサマ： おそとへでたい。
Omamorisama: i want to go outside*

*All of Omamorisama’s speech is written completely in hiragana


小夜： 申し訳ありません。。。わたしもオマモリサマも外へですことは。。。
Saya: I’m so very sorry. Neither of us can go outside…


オマモリサマ： さやのからだから、しらないにんげんとばけもののにおいがする。
Omamorisama: there is the smell of some unknown human and bakemono on your body, saya

小夜： えっ。
Saya: Eh?

オマモリサマ： もしかしたら、
Omamorisama: perhaps


オマモリサマ： そのものたちが、おらやさやをここからだしてくれるかもしれん。。。
Omamorisama: they will be the ones to free me and saya from this place

潮： だめだ。クソオヤジめ話し中だ。。。でも元気っつーことかな。
Ushio: Nope, my damn Pops is on the phone. But at least he’s probably all right.


とら： 「でんわ」ならかまいたちの家の近くの村でもできるだろがよ。
Tora: If you just wanted a phone, we could have gone
to the village closer to the Kamaitachi’s house.


潮： でもよー、オレ一回こことあちこちまわって見たかったんだよー。
Ushio: Yeah, but I wanted to go around and check this place out at least once.

*A “tabearuki” (Food Walk) is an event where pay a set price and then walk around town to different restaurants and eat samples at each stop.

Ushio: Look, Tora! This is really interesting.

ザシキワラシ
Zashikiwarashi*

*The zashikiwarashi is a legend from the Touhoku region of Japan (northern Honshuu)

家の神様をいわれ子供のカッコをしておる。
This household god takes the shape of a small child.

誰もいないザシキでもの音がしたり、人の気配がざわざわする時はこの神様だ。
This god makes its presence known by making noise in empty tatami rooms.

この神様が住んでる家は金持ちになり、いなくなると貧乏になったり、
悪いことがおきるとかいわれておる。
A house with this god will be rich but when it leaves, it will become poor and bad things will happen.


とら： バカモン！　なんでわしがそんなもん、　おもしろがらなきゃいけんだよ！
Tora: Dummy! Why would you think
I’d be interested in that kind of thing!

潮： ちえっ！
Ushio: Che!


潮： あ！
Ushio: Oh!


潮： あの時の。。。！
Ushio: From before!

Saya: Ah…


潮： 気づかなかっ。。。
Ushio: She didn’t recognize-


潮： ちょっとォ！
Ushio: HEY!


潮： くわっ。
Ushio: Kuwah.

Ushio: Phew.


潮： まいっちゃたなー。
Ushio: She collapsed.

潮： すいませーん。このヒトの家知ってる人いませんかーっ？
Ushio: Excuse me! Does anyone know where this person’s house is?


潮： 誰かーっ、このヒトのー
Ushio: Anybody? Does anybody know-

女： ちょっとボク！　ここじゃね、
Woman: Hey, boy! You’re not from around here.

女： その白い髪の子は有名なんだよ。
Woman: That white-haired girl is quite famous.


女： ほらあそこの山の中腹に見える屋敷だよ。
昔から金持ちでこの辺一帯の大地主の鷹取の家！
はやくつれてってやってよ。
Woman: You see that manshion up on the mountain?
That’s the House of Takatori. They’ve been rich and
have owned land all around here for ages. Hurry and take her up there.
