Voice: Aotsuki Ushio, come in.


潮： 誰だー？
Ushio: Who’s that?


潮： なんだぁ、こんな山奥にすげえでっかい家だなー。
Ushio: Why is there a great huge house out here in the mountains?


潮： うひゃー　馬！牛もだ！！
Ushio: Uhya! There’re horses. Cows too.


潮： 今、秋だぜえ！？
Ushio: Isn’t it autumn now?


潮： へええ。。。
Ushio: Wow…


声： こっちにくるのだ。
Voice: Come this way.

声： さあ、入るがよい。
Voice: Well, come in.


潮： うわぁ　ひっろいなー。
Ushio: Uwaa! It’s huge!


潮： おじゃましやっす。
Ushio: Ojama shimasu.


潮： ワナかもしれないけど、こうなったら、
もう何がおきたって驚くもんか！。。。でも。。。
Ushio: It’s likely a trap but I’ve come this far.
I’m surprised nothing has happened yet. Then again…


潮： こんだけ広い屋敷に、人の気配がまったくねえ。
Ushio: It’s such a big house but there’s no sign of anyone.


潮： そこにあるモン、全部が、たった今まで人がいてっていう感じなのによ。
Ushio: With all this stuff around, it feels as though there were people here only moments ago.


潮： まったくでかくておっかしな屋敷だぜ！
Ushio: This is one seriously huge, strange mansion.

声： こっちだ。こっちにくるのだ！
Voice: This way. Come this way.

潮： オレの部屋ならこの廊下だけだハコは入るぜ。。。
Ushio: My whole room could go in this one corridor.


潮： やい！声のヤツ、こんなトコにつれこんでどうするつもりだ！？
ケンカならかってやらぁ、でてきやがれっ！！
Ushio: Yai! Voice, why did you bring me to this place?
If you’re going to fight me, just come on out!

声： ふふ。。。　そういきりたつでない。
おまえをどうしようというのではないわ。
Voice: Fu fu… Temper, temper. It’s nothing like that.

声： その証拠に、おぬしのキズは治っておるだろう。
Voice: As proof, I’ll heal your wounds.

潮： あれぇ！？ホントだ、痛くない。
Ushio: Ah! It’s true. It doesn’t hurt.


声： それともおぬし怖いか？
Voice: Or perhaps you’re just afraid?

潮： こっ、怖くなんかないぞっ。
Ushio: I-I’m not afraid!


潮： おう、どこにでもいってやらぁ！
Ushio: Right, I’ll go anywhere!

声： うむ、そうだ、きてくれ。
Voice: Umu, good. Come on then.


声： 母のことは好きか？おぬし。。。
Voice: Do you love your mother?


潮： なっ、何だよ、突然よっ！
Ushio: W-what do you mean? Of course I do!


声： 母親は好きか？
Voice: Do you love your mother?


潮： わからないよ。。。
Ushio: I don’t know…

声： わからない？
Voice: You don’t know?


潮： オレは物心ついた時から、母ちゃんがいなかったんだ。。。
オヤジと二人で暮らしてきた。。。だから。。。
Ushio: When I was old enough to know what was going on around me,
my mother wasn’t there…
I lived alone with my Pops. So…


声： だから？
Voice: So…?

潮： オレは母ちゃんが恋しくて旅してるんじゃないと思う。
母ちゃんがどんなもんかもしれないんだ。
Ushio: I don’t think I’m making this journey because I love her.
I don’t know anything about her.

潮： ただ。。。　なんでオヤジが母ちゃんの秘密を、
今まで隠してきたのか。。。
Ushio: It’s just…why is Pops still keeping my mother’s secret?

潮： なんで母ちゃんが、オレを残していなくなったのかを
しりたいだけなんだ。
Ushio: I just want to know why she wasn’t there and why she left me behind.


声： ここじゃ、入られよ。
Voice: I’m in here. Come in.


潮： ええい、入ってやらぁ！
Ushio: Okay, I’m coming in.

Ushio: Za-


潮： ザシキワラシじゃねえかよ、どうしたんだよ。
Ushio: Zashikiwarashi! What are you doing here?


オマモリサマ： いつぞやは。。。
Omamori-sama: It’s been some time.


オマモリサマ： きょうは　このあたりのやまやまのようかいを
たばねる“おさ”が。。。
Omamori-sama: Today, you have come here because Osa,


オマモリサマ： うしおどのとはなしたいともうされるのでおこしいただいた。
Omamori-sama: He, who governs the youkai of the nearby mountains,
wishes to speak with you, Ushio-dono.

潮： ハナシ？
Ushio: Speak with me?


長： ああ。。。おそらく今、おぬしのこころの中でうずまいておる
疑問に答えようと思ってな。
Osa: Yes…I think it will answer some of the doubts you have swirling within your heart.


潮： 妖怪どもの「長」。。。？疑問に答えるだと！？
Ushio: You’re the youkai’s leader? Then you can answer my questions!

潮： ああ、疑問ならてんこもりよっ！
なんだ妖怪どもはオレを襲うんだよっ！？
迷惑だろっ！！　　オレの母ちゃんが何やったってんどよ！？
Ushio: Yeah, what about the Tenkomori!
Why are all the youkai attacking me! It’s a real pain!
And what is it that my mother did!


長： あわてるな、何事も順序があるということも
学ばなければならぬぞ。。。おぬし。
Osa: Don’t be in such a rush. You must learn everything in order.


長： おぬしはな、母親は妖どもの恨みをかったために
襲われたのだ。
Osa: The reason you’re being attacked is due to animosity toward your mother.


長： おぬしの母は、日本の妖怪の怨敵を、
強力な結界で護っておるのだからな。
Osa: Your mother is protecting our sworn enemy with a powerful barrier.

(箱： おぬしらでいう中国という国がまだ形のさだまらぬ
「気」であった時、澄んだ清浄な「気」は上に昇って
人間となり濁った「気」は下にたまって一匹の大妖怪になった。）
(Box: When ki settled into a form in the country that you call China,
the clear, pure ki climbed high to become humans,
while the dark, muddied ki gathered low to become a single daiyoukai.)


(箱： 大妖怪は邪な「気」の塊だったので、この世の正義なるものを
すべて滅ぼす邪念に燃えていた。　そしてその邪念は、
ほかの妖たちにとっても、また危険極まりなかった。
(Box: Because the daiyoukai was a great lump of wickedness,
the need to destroy all righteousness in this world burned in its wicked mind.
That evil mind was also a boundless danger to other youkai.


白面： 人間の苦しみはわが喜び。人は生かしてやろう。
だが妖怪は要らぬ、われ以外の妖怪は皆死ね！
Hakumen: Human suffering is my joy so I will let the humans live.
But I need no youkai. All other youkai will die!


(箱： その大妖怪―“白面のもの”は、中国の王の妃を食い殺して化け、
人々に圧政を敷くことで目的をとげようとした。）
(Box: That daiyoukai, Hakumen no Mono, consumed and
took the place of a consort of the ruler of China.
It tried to achieve its goal of spreading tyranny over the people.


（潮： 中国の妖怪たちも奴に手向かえず、人間たちは、妊婦の腹をさき、
胎児の性別をあてる賭を平然と行なうその妃に慄然とした。）
(Box: With no resistance from the youkai of China, humans trembled as the consort
calmly placed bets on the sex of embryos and then sliced open the bellies of the pregnant women.)

（箱： 次にインドに渡った「ヤツ」は、やはり妃に化生して、
またしても「マダカ国」という国に地獄をもたらした。）
(Box: After that, it crossed to India, where is again took the form of a consort
and again brought Hell upon the country called Madaka. )

（箱： こうして国々を転々とし、悪業の限りをつくした「白面の者」はついにー）
(Box: Like this it moved from place to place, exhausting the limits of evil deeds,
until finally Hakumen no Mono…

白面： 日本にやってきたのだ！
Hakumen: I have come to Japan!


（箱： 時に日本の妖と異国の大妖怪の、人間にはみえぬ死闘がはじまった。。。）
(Box: At that moment, the struggle to the death between the bakemono of Japan
and the foreign daiyoukai began, unseen by humans.)


長： その妖怪―
Osa: That youkai-

長： その姿は金色に輝き。。。
Osa: whose form shone with golden radiance

長： 白き面の大化生！！
Osa: was a white-faced demon!

長： 九つの尾をもつ獣の姿！
Osa: A beast with nine tails!

潮： 「白面の者」。。。
Ushio: Hakumen no Mono…


長： 今思い出しても震えがくる。。。こない妖はないだろう。
Osa: There is no bakemono who, remembering it even now,
does not tremble at the thought.

長： それほど、ヤツは強大だったのだ。。。
Osa: It was that powerful…


長： すさまじいものだった、日本中の妖怪たちをまきこんだぞの
戦いはその後―
Osa: It was a fearsome thing, the battle that the youkai of Japan
became entrenched in.

長： 二００年間続いた。。。
Osa: It went on for 200 years…


長： 長飛丸も勇ましかった。。。
Osa: Nagatobimaru also fought bravely…

長： だが、二００年目にして人間とわれらに追いたてられたヤツは、
さすがに傷つき、逃走し、ある地で眠りについた。
Osa: But, in the 200th year, it was driven out by the us and the humans
and, still wounded, it ran to a place it could sleep.


長： その地までヤツのとどめをささんといったわれらは、
最大の障壁にぶつかった！！
Osa: When we came to that place to deliver the fatal blow,
we came upon a great enclosing wall!

長： 一人の人間の女が、「白面の者」の周りに張った。。。
Osa: A single human woman had erected around Hakumen no Mono

長： 強力な結界に！
Osa: A most powerful barrier!


潮： それが。。。母ちゃん？
Ushio: That was…my mother?


長： 少しちがうな。われわれがヤツと戦ったのは、
千年も昔の話ぞ。。。おぬしの母ではない。
Osa: Not quite. This tale of our battle with Hakumen no Mono
is a 1000 years old… She was not you mother.


長： かの女は人に比べて異様に長寿の血筋だが。。。
そこまでは生きぬ。
Osa: She was from a bloodline that is queerly long-lived next to normal humans
but she did not live that long.


長： われらにとって不可解な、使命をもったその女は、
代がわりをするらしい。
Osa: This woman, whose mission is baffling to us,
seems to be replaced each generation.

長： 過去数度に渡ってわれわれは、「白面の者」を襲ったが、
どの女のつくった結界をも破ることはできなかった。
Osa: Though we have gone to fight Hakumen no Mono several times in the past,
we have been unable to break through the barriers any of the women have created.


長： おぬし、母の旧姓をしっておるか！？
Osa: Do you know your mother’s maiden name?

潮： いや。。。須磨子っていう名前しかしらねえ。。。
Ushio: No… I only know she’s called Sumako…


長： 日崎という。。。
Osa: It’s Hizaki…


長： 日崎須磨子というのが、おまえの母でおり。。。
Osa: The one called Hizaki Sumako is your mother.

長： 現在「白面の者」を護る血筋三代目の女だ！！
Osa: Presently, she is the third in the bloodline that protects Hakumen no Mono!


潮： そうか。。。妖怪どもは自分らの敵を護ってる
オレの母ちゃんが憎くて、オレに八つ当たりしてたのか。。。
Ushio: Hmm… So the youkai are acting out their anger at me
because of their grudge against my mother, who is protecting their enemy.


潮： でも、何でオレの母ちゃんは、そいつを護ってんだ？
Ushio: But why is my mother protecting it?

長： それはわれわれにもわからん。。。だが。。。
Osa: This even we do not understand…
However…

長： おぬしならそれをききだせるかもな。
Osa: Perhaps you can acquire this information.

潮： え！？
Ushio: Huh!?


長： われはそろそろ気づいたのだ。。。
何度やってもおぬしの母の結界は壊せぬ。
それならばなぜ、女たちは長い間ヤツを護っているのか、
その理由をしるべきだとな。。。
Osa: We have come to realize that no matter how many times we attack it
we will never break your mother’s barrier.
And so, we should discover the reason that these women have been
protecting it for such a long time.


長： そのためには蒼月潮。。。おぬしが母にあって、
その本意を尋ねてきてほしい。。。
Osa: For this reason, Aotsuki Ushio, when you meet your mother,
we wish you to inquire as to her true motives.


長： おぬしがわれら妖にとっても信ずるに足りる
男だということはこの童から諄諄とさとされたしな。
Osa: This child has tediously convinced me that you are a good enough man
for us youkai to place our trust in you.

潮： オマモリ。。。さん。。。
Ushio: Omamori-san…

長： この童は乗り気でないわれに粘り強く説教しおってな。
Osa: This child was persistent and strong in her singing your praises to me,
though I was less than enthusiastic.


長： おぬしが人間であるにもかかわらず、
妖怪にもいかに一生懸命であったかをな。。。
当人もこの地に至るまでに相当力を消耗しておるだろうに。。。
Osa: That despite your being a human being,
if you meet however many youkai with all your strength,
reaching this place may exhaust your considerable power.

潮： お。。。おい！
Ushio: O…Oi!


オマモリサマ： なに、おぬしにはおんがあった。
Omamori-sama: I owe a debt of gratitude to you.

オマモリサマ： それに。。。
Omamori-sama: Besides…

オマモリサマ： おぬしがしぬるとさやもなく。
Omamori-sama: If you died, Saya would cry.


長： 以上、われら遠野の妖は、これをもって
おぬしを追うのをやめるとする。
Osa: That is all. Do this and
we Toono youkai will stop pursuing you.


長： おぬしが母にあってその真意をきいて帰るまで。。。
Osa: When you meet your mother, ask her about her motives and return here.


長： やれやれ　困ったものだ。通達したというのに。。。
Osa: Well, well Here is a problem. Although, I have notified him.

オマモリサマ： ひとつきか？
Omamori-sama: Hitotsuki?

長： 面と向かって、潮殿に関しての決定を伝えねばだめか。
Osa: Perhaps I should tell him the decision
concerning Ushio-dono face to face.

潮： ちょっ。。まてよっ。
Ushio: Just a…just wait!


潮： 一方的にしゃべりやがって、だいたいあんたとオレは初対面じゃねーか！
Ushio: You’re talking pretty one-sided for our first meeting, aren’t you?


潮： なっ何だっ。
Ushio: W-what was that?


長： ふふっ。。。蒼月潮殿、わからぬか。
おぬしとわれは初対面ではないぞ。
Osa; Fu fuh Aotsuki Ushio-dono, you haven’t realized it?
This is not our first meeting.

潮： えっ。
Ushio: Huh?


長： 床の間をみてみれや、潮やい！
Osa: Go look in the tokonoma*, Ushio!

*an alcove in traditional rooms

潮： 森で助けた、 じいちゃん！
Ushio: The old man I saved in the woods!

潮： あ！
Ushio: Ah!

長： 一鬼！これほどいうても汝はわからんか！！
Osa: Hitotsuki! Do you not understand what I said!

潮： とらっ。
Ushio: Tora!


一鬼： いくら長のいうことでも、これだけはきけぬ。
こっちだって仲間が死んでおるのだ。
Hitotsuki: No matter how much you say, Osa, this only can I not listen to.
My comrades are dead!

潮： おい、とらっ、今までどこにいたんだよっ！？
Ushio: Hey, Tora, where have you been all this time!?

とら： そりゃ　こっちのセリフだわいっ、ボケッ！！
Tora: Hey, that’s what I was going to say, dummy!


一鬼： 蒼月潮。。。いざ。。。勝負ぞ。
Hitotsuki: Aotsuki Ushio. Now…I challenge you.


潮： よし！
Ushio: Fine!

とら： まてや！！
Tora: Hold it!


とら： 因縁でよ、
こいつとはわしがやることにしようかな。
Tora: This is fate.
I’m going to take him on.
