潮： ちょ、ちょっと待てよ　トキサカ。。。
Ushio: W-wait a minute, Tokisaka-

潮： なっ、何のコトかわかんねーよっ。
Ushio: I d-don’t understand!


時逆： はーっははははははあ～
Tokisaka: Ha! Ha ha ha ha ha~

時逆： だから、これからそれを教えてやろうというのに。
頭の悪い伝承のお人よなあ。
Tokisaka: And so, we will do this so you will understand. You’re
a bit of a dumb Chosen One, aren’t you?


潮： 。。。悪かったよ。。。
Ushio: …sorry…

とら： そーそーそー、こいつあったまわる。。。
Tora: Yeah, yeah, yeah! He’s so-

とら： 。。。くもねーけどよ。。。！

自己紹介しろォ！！
Tora: Hey, you, Tokisaka! You should introduce yourself first!

潮： やつあたりだな。
Ushio: So should you.

時逆： ほっほっほお～　あいかわらず乱暴な妖よのう。。。
長飛丸。。。いんや、
字伏の方がよいかなあ。
Tokisaka: Ho ho ho~ If it isn’t the ever-belligerent bakemono Nagatobimaru…
No, perhaps Azafuse would be better.


とら： わしはおまえを知らんのにおまえはわしを知っとんのかよ。。。
Tora: I don’t know you but you know me.


時逆： ああ、知っとるよう。ぜーんぶ知っとる。おぬしでなく、
この蒼月潮が生まれてからどうやって育ったのかもなあ。
Tokisaka: Yes, I know you. I know everything. Not just about you, but about
how Aotsuki Ushio here was raised since birth.


時逆： あたしゃ、時間というもんを旅して回る妖なんでなああ。
Tokisaka: I am a bakemono who travels around in what you call “time”.


時逆： あの時もすごかったなあぁ。
Tokisaka: That time was terrible.

白面： 我に人間の苦痛と呪詛の声を！
Hakumen: I am the malediction and agony of humanity!

白面： 我のほかの妖どもに死を！！
Hakumen: I am the death of all other bakemono!!

この日本を滅ぼそうとした白面の者と、
Tokisaka: I have gone back 830 years to the dreadful battle
between Hakumen no Mono, who was destroying Japan,

時逆： この国の妖達、はては人間までも巻きこんだ凄まじい
戦いがあった。
Tokisaka: And the bakemono of this country. At the end, even the humans
were involved.

Tokisaka: The bakemono were wounded…


時逆： 人間もまた倒れていった。。。
Tokisaka: The humans were defeated as well…


時逆： しかし、それでも人間どもの力とー
Tokisaka: However, even so, with the power of the humans-

時逆： おぬしらの力が合わさって。。。さしもの大妖にも
逃げるべき時が来た。
Tokisaka: And the bakemono’s power combined… the time came when
the terrible daiyoukai had to escape.

時逆： 体の破片を飛び散らすながらヤツは逃げた。
Tokisaka: As it escaped, shards of its body flew out in all directions.

時逆： 全国に飛び散ったほかの破片は、長い時のうちに日本の
妖が始末した。
Tokisaka: The bakemono of Japan spent much time getting rid of the other
shards that had spread out all across the country.


時逆： そして残ってのが一番大きかったこの破片と。。。
逃げた本体のみ。
Tokisaka: And then all that was left were the largest piece…and the main body.


潮： おい、待てよ。なんでその時に本体の方にとどめを
ささなかったんだよっ！？
Ushio: Oi, wait a sec. Why didn’t you finish off the main body then!?

潮： そーすりゃめんどーなかったのによ～
Ushio: If you had, we wouldn’t have all this trouble now!


時逆： 人間も我々も、その時そろそろ気づき始めていたのだ。
Tokisaka: We and the humans had come to recognized something then.

時逆： ヤツを破壊する決定的な「力」が吹けてることになあ。
Tokisaka: That which emitted the decisive power to destroy the creature,


時逆： 妖を殺し、白面の者を追う、おそろしの槍―
Tokisaka: The dreadful Spear that killed bakemono and followed Hakumen no Mono-


時逆： おまえさんの持つ、
Tokisaka: We realized we didn’t have

時逆： 「獣の槍」がないことになあ。
Tokisaka: The Beast Spear you have there.


潮： そんなにスゲー槍なんかよ。。。コレ。
Ushio: This…is a really incredible spear.

とら： アホが、今ごろ気づくんじゃね～よ。
Tora: You just notice that, moron?


時逆： その槍は、当時から捜されていたが
見つかられなかったのだよう。
Tokisaka: We have searched for the Spear since that time but
were never able to find it.

時逆： それで当時の人間側の中心だった、
二人の者がとんでもねえことを思いついたのよう。
Tokisaka: And at the heart of the human side that day,
two people came up with something unimaginable.


時逆： 陰陽寮＊陰陽博士。。。安部奉近と
Tokisaka: Onmyou expert Abeno Yasuchika of the Onmyouryou*,

＊陰陽道を研究し実践するお役所ね。
* A government office that studied and practiced Onmyoudou (the way of Yin and Yang)

安部： よし。。。獣の槍は、白面の者を追い、これを滅する
事が悲願と聞く。
。。。なれば、この白面の体の一部は、獣の槍発見に
使えよう。。。
Abeno: Well then…the Beast Spear is the divine help we have asked for to follow and
destroy Hakumen no Mono.
If that is so, we can use this piece of Hakumen no Mono to detect the Beast Spear…


時逆： その戦いを通じて、人間と妖怪の連絡役をひきうけ、
尋常ならざるその神通力で、戦いの行方を決めた女。。。
Tokisaka: And the woman who ran the battle, who was responsible for the role of
communicator between the humans and youkai, who decided the course of
the battle with unimaginable supernatural power…

女： そうですね、獣の槍が、白面を捜しだすのであれば。。。
獣の槍は必ずやここにやってくるでしょう。
Woman: Yes. If the Beast Spear ferrets out Hakumen…
It will assuredly come to this place.


女： では、私はこれにて失礼つかまつります。
Woman: However, I must take my leave.

安部： 貴女様は何処へ。。。？
Abeno: Where will you go?


女： 私は。。。
Woman: I will go…

女： 逃げた白面の者の。。。見張りに参りましょう。
Woman: To stand guard over the escaped Hakumen no Mono.

では貴女は、き奴の逃げゆく先をご存知か！？
教え給え！！
Abeno: What!
You know where it has escaped to!?
Tell me!


女： それは獣の槍が見つかった時、おのずとわかることです。
その時まで、私と、私の血をひくものが白面の者をー
Woman: You will come to understand where when the Beast Spear is discovered.
Until then, I and those descended from me-

女： 結界にどじこめておきましょう。
Woman: Will keep Hakumen no Mono trapped with a barrier.


安部： 。。。貴女はいったいどなたなのです。。。？
神職でも、ましてや仏門でもない貴女が此度
の戦いで見せた法力と、宿曜師＊も及ばぬほどの神眼。。。
Abeno: …who are you?
You, who are neither a Shinto nor Buddhist priestess, displayed
houriki and shingan* beyond that of a sukuyoushi* at this battle…

*God Eyes

＊僧で占いに秀でた者達と思ってください。
*Think of it as someone who surpasses a priest at divination (a form of astrology based on an Indian text)

女： 奉近様は、白拍子の私ごときの言葉を真剣にくんで
戦いに加えてくださいました。
その有難さはいいあらわしようもありませぬ。
Woman: You, Yasuchika-sama, allowed me to contribute to the battle though
some seriously consider the rumors that I am a prostitute.
There is no way I can express my gratitude for this.

女： 私はー獣の槍をつくった者の妹。。。
Woman: I am the younger sister of the one who made the Beast Spear…

女： その生まれ変わりなのです。
Woman: I am her reincarnation.


安部： なっ、なんですと！？
Abeno: W-what are you saying!?


女： これより後、白面の者と対決する法力者達の
宗門ができるでしょう。
Woman: From this point, I will create a sect of hourikisou to
confront Hakumen no Mono.

女： 私はその宗門の秘密として語り継がれるー
白面の者を見張る「役目」を待った女達の
「初代」と呼ばれるやもしれません。
Woman: I will be handed down as the secret of this sect-
I guess I could be called “shodai”, the first generation of
women who will watch over Hakumen no Mono as “oyakume”.


女： 私は、ジエメイ。
Woman: I am Jie Mei.


女： 獣の槍とともに永劫の闇を歩く女。。。
Woman: The woman who walks the eternal darkness with the Beast Spear…

潮： そうか。。。この洞は獣の槍を食いつかせる、
Ushio: That’s right… The Beast Spear was gripped by this cave,

とら： エサなのか。。。
Tora: For food?


時逆： 長飛丸。。。おっと今は、とらだったっかなあ。
おまえさんがあたしを知らんのも無理ないねえ。
Tokisaka: Nagatobimaru…Whoops, you’re Tora now, aren’t you?
It’s not unreasonable that you do not know me.


時逆： あの女ごが獣の槍を持つ者を待つっていう重要な役を
授けてくれるまでは、あたしは時の隙をさまようだけの
カゲの薄い妖だったんだから。
Tokisaka: Until that girl awarded me the important role of waiting for the
wielder of the Beast Spear, I was an inconspicuous bakemono loitering
in the cracks of time.


潮： あの女ご。。。ジエメイ。。。
Ushio: That girl…Jie Mei…

潮： 槍の内側で会ったあのヒトか！？
Ushio: Is she the person I saw inside the Spear?


潮： あの槍をつくってた男が、あの女のヒトをジエメイと
呼んでいた。
そして、あのヒトは男をー
Ushio: That man making the Spear called that woman Jie Mei.
And that woman called him-

ジエメイ： 兄さん。。。
Jie Mei: Niisan…


潮： あ～もう頭がこんがらってきたよ。
Ushio: Ah~ My head’s getting all mixed up!

とら： いったいどうなってるんだ？
Tora: What the hell does all this mean?


時逆： だーからそういうのもぜーんぶ、
Tokisaka: That’s why you two

時逆： おまえさんの目で見て知るんだよお。
Tokisaka: Will learn everything with your own eyes.

潮： なんだ！？なんだ！？
Ushio: What’s happening! What’s going on!?


時逆： 時間の紐を逆さにたぐる妖よ。
Tokisaka: The bakemono who pulls the thread of time backward.

Ushio: UOOOO, what the-!?

時逆： なーに驚いてんだよう。。。時間を遡ってんだろお。
Tokisaka: Why so surprised…we’re just going back in time.

Tokisaka: We’re on our way to the spot.


時逆： うまく’動かねえと古代の海とか、ツンドラに行っちまう。
Tokisaka: Don’t move around or you’ll end up in an ancient ocean or tundra.


潮： よ。。。、よく知ってんなァ　トキサカ～
Ushio: Y-you know this well, Tokisaka~


時逆： ほらあ、もうすぐだよぉ～
Tokisaka: Here we are, any moment now~

Ushio: T-this is…

時逆： おまえさんらの時間より二千二百年ほど昔の中国の都さあ。
Tokisaka: This is a city in ancient China, around 2200 years before your time.


潮： 槍は！？
Ushio: The Spear!


時逆： ここは、槍がつくられる前の場所だ～獣の槍があっちゃ
おかしーだろぉ。
Tokisaka: This is before the Spear was made~ It’d be strange if it were here.


時逆： じゃあなぁ、その目でしっかりと見て、
その耳でしっかりと聞いてきな。
Tokisaka: Well then, I’ll keep this eye on you and this ear listening well.

時逆： 時がきたら迎えにきてやらぁ。
Tokisaka: I’ll bring you back when the time comes.


とら： あっ、ちょっ、待てよっ。
Tora: Ah, wait a- wait!

Ushio: You can fly, can’t you!?

とら： うるせーっ、急だったんでいっ。
Tora: Shut up, it was all so sudden!

[Volume 7]

函館の民宿での晩ごはん。トンカツとキンピラごぼうがあるようだ。
歩にキンピラをもらわれてしまったうしおだが、気がついているのやらいないやら。
It’s dinner at the Hakodate minshuku. Looks like there’s tonkatsu (fried porkchops) and
kinpira gobou (spicy burdock root). Ushio got some kinpira from Ayumi,
but he doesn’t seem to notice it’s there.

[Volume 8]

登別に向かうバスの中で子どもにもらったカルピス。あんぱんマンの水筒が
うまみをさそう。時に藤田というまんが家のスタジオでは、いつも水の量の
配分をあやまりうすいカルピスができあがるのだ。
Here’s the Calpis he got from the kid on the bus on the way to Noboribetsu.
The Anpanman canteen lends it a good flavor. Incidentally, a manga artist called
Fujita always has weak Calpis ready in his studio at home in place of water.

「第９巻」
[Volume 9]

北海道襟裳岬の民宿の朝ごはん。シャケ、目玉焼、味つけ焼のり、おひたし、
ミソ汁。そしてごはん。オーソドックスだが、やはり朝は、こうでなくちゃ、
とうしおは思っている。
This is breakfast from the minshuku at Cape Erimo in Hokkaidou. Salmon, a sunny-side-up egg,
seasoned grilled seasweed, a veggie side dish, and miso soup. That’s a meal. It’s very orthodox and
Ushio would be thinking about it all morning if he didn’t have it.

「第１２巻」
[Volume 12]

古代中国、造剣のジエメイ一家で、潮がごちそうになった野菜の煮物。
珍しい具が入っていそうだ。
In ancient China, at the blacksmith house of Jie Mei, Ushio was made a feast of stewed vegetables.
Looks like some fine ingredients in there.

以上のように、ごくフツウの中学生・蒼月潮は、やはりごくフツウのごはんと
めぐり合い、それをパクパクもしゃもしゃと食べ、妖怪と戦っているのだ。
我々としては、彼がとらのごはんにならないよう、心から祈りたいものである！！
In the end, the perfectly normal middle-schooler Aotsuki Ushio happens across some
perfectly normal food, gobbles it up messily, and battles youaki. As for us, we’re praying from the bottom of our hearts that he doesn’t become Tora’s meal!
