*The Story So Far*

槍の力を使いすぎたため、獣化したオレは、槍にひきずられた
まま旅の最終目的地・カムイコタンに到着。
I had become a beast after using too much of the Spear’s power and was
dragged along, arriving in Kamuikotan, the final destination of my journey.

そこには、母ちゃんの秘密を知ることができる“洞”があった。
There was a “cave” there where I could learn my mother’s secret.

洞を目前にしながら、再び人間に戻れぬかもしれない、という
最大の危機をむかえるが、奇跡的に復活。
With the cave right before my eyes, the biggest danger was that
I wouldn’t turn back into a human being, but miraculously, I was restored.

おしよせる婢妖も、やっとのことで撃退し、とらと共に洞へ入る。
After repelling the advancing Hiyou, Tora and I entered the cave.

そこでオレ達は、時間というものを旅する妖・時逆と対面。
獣の槍がつくられた時、つくられた場所―二二九０年前の中国へ誘われた。
There we met the bakemono who travels in time, Tokisaka.
He took us to China, 2,290 years ago, to the time and place the Beast Spear was created.

そして今オレ達は、白面の者が潜むこの都で、神剣造りにはげむ一家と、
その娘・ジエメイに出会う！！
Now we’ve run into Jie Mei, daughter of a family endeavoring to create a holy blade
in the very city where Hakumen no Mono lurks.

Jie Mei: But, Kaa-sama, Shanyue is amazing!


ジエメイ： 襲いかかってくる鉤殻虫を、岩で殴りとばしたんだから。
Jie Mei: He knocked those koukakuchuu out with a stone.

母： まあ、それはそれは。。。さすが仙人様ですねえ。
Mother: Ah, my goodness…you are quite the sennin-sama.

潮： いや。。。はははは。。。
Ushio: Well…ha ha ha ha…

潮： ホントはとらがやったんだけどなあ。
Ushio: Truth is, it was Tora who did that.


とら： うしおよう。。。
Tora: Ushio…

潮： あん？
Ushio: Hm?


とら： わしゃちょっくら外を散歩しれくらあ。
獣の槍ないからってわしから逃げんなよ。
Tora: I’m going out for a little walk.
You don’t have the Beast Spear, so you can’t run away.

潮： 誰が逃げっかアホ！
Ushio: Who’s running away, moron!


とら： この国はなーんか懐かしーんだよな。
Tora: This country is getting me all nostalgic.

潮： 懐かしい。。。？
Ushio: Nostalgic?

母： たとえ仙人様でも、上に何かはおられてないと
風をひきますよ。
Mother: Even though you are a sennin-sama, you’ll catch a cold
without a top on.

母： ギリョウのお古で悪いけど着てくださいな。。。
合うかしら。
Mother: I’m sorry these are Giryou’s old clothes but please put it on.
It should fit you.


潮： う、うんッ。
Ushio: Uh, okay!


ジエメイ： うん、似あってる。
Jie Mei: Yeah, it looks great!


潮： そ。。。そうかな。。。
Ushio: Y-you think so…


母： あの服のしみは、ジエメイがお転婆やってごはんこぼしたのよ。
Mother: The stains on it are from Jie Mei playing tomboy and spilling food on it.

ジエメイ： やだ　母様、すぐそれいうんだもの。
Jie Mei: Kaa-sama! Don’t tell him that!


母： 袖丈、もう少し短くした方がいいかしら。
Mother: Maybe I should shorten the sleeves a little.

潮： いっいやあ！
Ushio: N-no!

潮： ちょっと外に行ってくらあっ。
Ushio: I gotta go outside for a sec.

潮： おばちゃん、サンキュー！
Ushio: Obachan, thank you*!

*written in katakana English as “sankyuu”

ジエメイ： さんきゅうって何かしら？
Jie Mei: What’s “sankyuu”?

母： さあ。
Mother: Hmm.


潮： 。。。びっくりしたあ。。。
Ushio: …that was a surprise…


潮： もう少し。。。短くした方がいいかしら。。。か。
Ushio: Maybe she…could make it… a little shorter, huh?

潮： うん。。。！
Ushio: Mmmm!

潮： ひっさしぶりによくねたー！
Ushio: It’s been a long time since I slept so well!


潮： 薄い布がふとんがわりだって、
今まで野宿したコトにくらべりゃー。
Ushio: It was only a thin cloth futon but it was great compared
to all the camping out I’ve been doing.

とら： あーあ。
Tora: Jeez~


とら： めんどくさかったあ。
Tora: That was a real bother.

潮： とら！今までどこにいたんだよ！！
Ushio: Tora! Where have you been!

潮： とっ、とらっ、なんだよ、血だらけじゃんかよ！
Ushio: T-Tora, what happened! You’re covered in blood!

とら： ぜーんぶこの辺りの妖の血よ。
Tora: It’s the blood of all the bakemono around here.


とら： わしが飛び出していくらも行かぬうちに、
Tora: Almost immediately as I flew out,


とら： この辺りの妖が、
Tora: The bakemono around here

とら： よってたかって襲ってきやがったのよ。
Tora: All ganged up and attacked me!


とら： フツーは妖ってのは、てめーカッテに暮らしてんだぜ。
Tora: Usually, bakemono keep to themselves.


潮： そんで、おめーはどうしたのよ？
Ushio: So, what did you do?

とら： あーん？
Tora: Hm?


とら： ちーっと、
Tora: I kinda

とら： なでてやったけどよ。
Tora: Gave them the brush off.

とら： それでわかったんだけどもよ。
Tora: But I did learn something.

潮： ん？
Ushio: Hm?


とら： ここの妖どもはおびえてるのさ。己以外の妖を
生かしときたくねえ、強力な妖が近くにいるんだね。。。
Tora: The bakemono of this place are scared. They don’t want bakemono different
from them living here but there’s a strong bakemono nearby.


とら： あの壁の向こうあたりにな。
Tora: It’s near that wall.

潮： まさか。。。それって。。。
Ushio: No way…it can’t be…


とら： ああ、胸くそ悪くなるぜ。
Tora: Yeah, it looks really bad.

とら： 白面の者がいるのさ。
Tora: Hakumen no Mono is there.

ジエメイ： おはよう！
Jie Mei: Good morning!


ジエメイ： よくねむれた？
Jie Mei: Did you sleep well?

潮： う、うん。
Ushio: Uh, yeah.


ジエメイ： よかった！
Jie Mei: Good!


ジエメイ： あの城壁の向こうに、
Jie Mei: Hakumen no Mono has come

ジエメイ： 白面の者が来ているのね。
Jie Mei: Past the castle walls.


潮： う。。。うん、そうみたいだね。。。
Ushio: Um…yeah, it seems so…

ジエメイ： だから父様が白面の者を倒す剣をつくっているんだわ。
Jie Mei: So Tou-sama is making a blade to defeat Hakumen no Mono.


潮： つよい剣。。。つくれるといいね。。。
Ushio: He can make…a strong blade…

昔はあの城門の中にいたの。。。
Jie Mei: Long ago…
My family lived within the castle gates.

潮： え？
Ushio: Huh?


ジエメイ： 私がまだ小さかった頃はね、
Jie Mei: I was still little then.

ジエメイ： 父様は王宮御用達の神職・刀鍛治だったの。
Jie Mei: Tou-sama was a priest and swordsmith to the royal palace.


ジエメイ： 城内の立派なおうちに、
Jie Mei: We lived in a great house in the castle

ジエメイ： 弟子を何十人も集めて住んでいたわ。
Jie Mei: And he had many apprentices.


ジエメイ： それが。。。
Jie Mei: But then…


ジエメイ： 王様の側近にまで登った父の遠い血縁にあたる人が、
Jie Mei: My father had become a close associate of the king,
but a distant relative of his

ジエメイ： 王様の命を狙ったの。
Jie Mei: Tried to kill the king.


ジエメイ： 他国の王から高いお金をもらって裏切った、
っていう話だったわ。
Jie Mei: It was said that the king of a foreign country had paid
a high price for this treason.

ジエメイ： 各国の王が各々「天子」を名乗って戦が絶えない
今なら、珍しくないことだけど。。。
Jie Mei: The kings of many of the lands were endlessly fighting to be named
“Emperor”. Even now, it’s not uncommon…

ジエメイ： 蒼月は仙道の修行で五山にこもってたんなら俗事なんてしらないわね。。。
Jie Mei: Because you were in sendou training, secluded in the mountains,
you aren’t aware of worldly affairs…

潮： あ。。。うん。。。
Ushio: Ah…yeah…

潮： ちんぷんかんぷんだよ。
Ushio: I have no idea what she’s talking about!


ジエメイ： それで彼を含め、
彼の一族は全員処刑されたわ、女も子供も。
Jie Mei: Then they caught him
and executed his entire family, even the women and children.


ジエメイ： でも私達一家だけは。。。王様の覚えも良かったし、
Jie Mei: But the king remembered our family fondly

ジエメイ： なによりも神職の者を処刑する縁起悪さもあって、
なんとか城からの追放だけで済んだの。
Jie Mei: And nothing brings worse luck than executing a priest,
so in the end, we were banished from the castle.


潮： へ～
Ushio: Wow~

ジエメイ： でも父様は、いつもおしゃってるわ。
Jie Mei: But Tou-sama always says…


父： 今に、父は城に戻ってみせるさ。。。一生懸命に
精神と技を磨いていれば、必ず王様もいつかお許しくださる。。。
Father: I’ll return to the castle, just watch… if I polish my spiritual skills
with all my might, someday, the king will forgive me…


潮： で。。。この城門の見えるトコに住んでるのかい。
Ushio: So…that’s why you live where you can see the castle gates.

ジエメイ： ええ。
Jie Mei: Yes.


ジエメイ： だから、今度の神剣を鍛えた者には神職を与える、
という君命を知った時の父様の喜びようったらなかったわ。
Jie Mei: So Tou-sama is overjoyed now that the king has ordered that the one
who makes the holy blade will be made a priest.


父： そうか！
Father: Really!

父： はははやっと好機がめぐってきたぞ。。。
Father: Ha ha ha! At last, I’ve been blessed with an opportunity…

ギリョウ： これで神職に復帰できる！
Giryou: You can return to being a priest!

母： 君に神剣を奉じれば。。。！
Mother: As long as you command the holy blade!


ジエメイ： 父様！ 　兄様！！
Jie Mei: Tou-sama! Nii-sama!


ジエメイ： 神剣はできあがったのですか？
Jie Mei: Is the holy blade finished?


父： だめだ。。。
Father: We can’t…

父： どうしてもひびが入る。。。！
茨山の優れた鉄を苦心して得たのに。。。
Father: No matter what we do, there are cracks…
We worked so hard to make the great Shizan steel…

父： それがどうしてもひとつに溶けまとまってくれぬ！
Father: But no matter what we do, not one will melt and settle correctly!

父： く。。。どうしたらよいのだ。。。
Father: Kuh…what can we do…


ギリョウ： 父上。。。ひとつ。。。方法があります。。。
Giryou: Chichiue…there is…one way…

父： なに！？
Father: What!?


ギリョウ： 私は遠く呉の国まで行って、剣の鍛法を学んできました。
Giryou: When I went to the far Third Kingdom*, I learned ways to forge blades.

*Three Kingdoms of Ancient China (Wei, Shu, and Wu)

ギリョウ： その中で暗黒の術となるものも耳にしました。。。
Giryou: Including a dark arts technique I heard of by chance…

父： そ、それはなんだギリョウ！教えるのだ！
Father: W-what is it, Giryou! Tell me!

ギリョウ： 今までだまっており、申し訳ありません。。。
Giryou: I am very sorry for remaining silent until now…


ギリョウ： 呉王こう閭の頃、干将という造剣の名工がおりました。
Giryou: When I was in the land of King Wu, there was a sword craftsman
called Kanshou.


ギリョウ： 彼は王から名剣を鍛えよとの命を受け、
Giryou: He was ordered by the king to create a great blade.

ギリョウ： 五山の金属を集め剣をつくろうとしたが、三年かかっても
金鉄は炉の火に溶けようとしなかった。
Giryou: He gathered metal from the five mountains and tried to make a blade
but three years passed and the gold and iron would not melt in the fires of the forge.

ギリョウ： そこで彼は、
Giryou: And then…


ギリョウ： 妻の莫邪とともに自らも髪を切り、爪を切って炉に
投げ入れた。
Giryou: His wife Bakuya and he cut their hair and their nails and threw them
into the forge.


ギリョウ： そして三百人の者にふいごを吹かせ、炭も燃やして
ようやく金鉄を溶かし、
Giryou: And three hundred men worked the bellows and burned charcoal
until the metal finally melted


ギリョウ： ＜干将＞＜莫邪＞の名剣をつくることができたのです。
Giryou: And he was able to make the great blades “Kanshou” and “Bakuya”.


父： そ。。。そうか。。。
Father: Y…yes…


父： そうか！ははは　でかしたぞ　ギリョウ！！
Father: Yes! Ha ha ha! We’ll do it, Giryou!

父： これで金鉄をしっかりひとつぬできるんだ！
Father: This way, we’ll be able to make one for certain!


父： コウシ、コウシ！
Father: Koushi! Koushi!

母： はい。
Father: Yes.


ジエメイ： 母様。。。そんなきれいな髪なのに。。。
Jie Mei: Kaa-sama…but your beautiful hair…

母： ジエメイ。。。母は造剣の名工の妻なのです。
夫の仕事のためには惜しい物などありません。。。
Mother: Jie Mei… I am the wife of a sword crafter.
There is nothing I would regret doing for my husband’s work.

Father: All right, Giryou. Let’s start!

父： ははは。
Father: Ha ha ha!


それから四日―
Four days later-

髪を炉に投げこむや金鉄は混じり合い。。。
After the hair was put into the forge and mixed with the metal…


ジエメイの父と兄の槌音は、休むことなく鍛冶場から聞こえた。
The sound of Jie Mei’s father and brother hammering could be heard, ceaselessly,
from the smithy.

Father: We’ve done it!!


潮： だいじょーぶ！？
Ushio: Are you all right!?

父： おお、蒼月くんか。。。
Father: Oh, Shanyue-kun?

潮： よかったね、おじさん。。。
Ushio: Thank goodness, Ojisan…


父： ああ、見てくれ。。。
Father: Ah, look at it…


父： この剣の輝きを。。。
Father: Look how this blade shines…

父： これこぞ、白面の者を討つ神剣となるだろう。
Father: This will be the holy blade to strike down Hakumen no Mono.


ジエメイ： あたるなえよ。母様のきれいな髪を捧げた剣だもの。
Jie Mei: Absolutely! Kaa-sama offered up her beautiful hair for it.


父： 次の奉上の日にこれを持って王の元へゆき、
Father: At the next audience day, we’ll bring this and the king will
be as he was,


父： 神職の座にまた。。。！
Father: And I will be a priest again!

父： ジエメイ、ギリョウ、コウシ！もう貧しさで
苦労はさせぬぞ！！
Father: Jie Mei, Giryou, Koushi! We’ll no longer toil in poverty!


だがー
But-


だが、うしおは忘れていたのだ。
But Ushio has forgotten.

あの男の姿をー
The look of that man-

血の涙を流しながら剣をうつ男。
The man who struck the blade with tears of blood flowing.

それは、この家族の行く末を暗示していたのではなかったろうか。
That it might be a hint as to the fate of this family.


そしてまたー
And so, still-

とらのいった通り、
It is as Tora said.


城の奥で、
Within the castle,

最強の妖が、
it lives.

息づいていることをー
The most powerful bakemono.
