Humans are born of the earth and return to it.

Ushio to Tora <Gaiden>

土に死ねぱこの世に再びかえってはこない。
Once they return to the earth, they do not come back to this world.

にもかかわらず、その土からさえこの世に立ちかえってくるもの。
Nevertheless, there are things that come from the earth that do return.

Box: It is long ago-

箱： 信行の中納言に美しい姫があった。吹雪と名づけられていたが、
誰もそう呼ぶ者はなかった。
Box: Chuunagon of Shingyou had a beautiful princess. Her name was Fubuki,
but no one ever called her that.

箱： 生まれてよりこのかた喜怒哀楽をその顔に浮かべたことのない姫を人々は
岩姫と呼んだ。
Box: Because no human emotion had ever passed over her face since birth,
people called her Iwahime, the Princess of Stone.

箱： 父の中納言はそれを心配し、報奨金をだしてまで、医師や宿曜師（占い師）を
集めたが効果はなし。
Box: Chuunagon, her father, worried over this, and spent a great deal of money gathering
doctors and soothsayers, but they were ineffective.

箱： それどころか、姫の美しさに邪な心を抱く陰陽師も現れた。
Box: And then, the princess’ beauty caught the eye of an onmyouji* with evil in his heart.

陰陽師： 表情を持たぬゆえに美しい岩姫よ！
Onmyouji: Beautiful Iwahime, devoid of all expression!

陰陽師： その一片の花びらのような唇で、歌を詠むのか。
Onmyouji: Do you sing with such lips, like the petals of a flower?

陰陽師： その嫋な指で、琴を弾くのか。。。表情のないまま。
Onmyouji: Do you play the koto* with your supple finger, your face without expression?

陰陽師： この大陰陽師斯波朽目のものに！！

人： ぬう、怪しの邪法師かっ！
Person: Nuh! A suspicious jahoushi*!

陰陽師： くくく、姫。。。私とともに参ろうぞ。。。
私はそんたが欲しいものはすべてもっておる故。
Onmyouji: Kuh kuh kuh, Princess…Come with me.
I will give you all that you desire.

陰陽師： さあ。。。！この斯波朽目のものになられよ。
Onmyouji: Now…Become Shiba Kuchime’s!

吹雪： わたくしは誰のものでもありません。それに。。。
わたしくしの欲しいものが、おまえにわかるはずもない。
Fubuki: I belong to no one. Besides,
you have no idea what I desire.

陰陽師： ふむ、さすがは岩姫といわれるだけはある。
私の「式神」を見て、全く取り乱さぬわ。
Onmyouji: Fuhm. You are indeed the Princess of Stone they call you.
Look upon my shikigami and you will not be so calm!

陰陽師： ますます気にいりましたぞ！
Onmyouji: I am most pleased by this!

Mumyou: Back, fiend!
Attendant* Inoue Mumyou is your enemy!

＊この場合は貴人の護衛の任にあるもの。

陰陽師： ふん。＊雑色あがりのえらく腕のたつ侍がいるとはきいていたが、おのれか。
Onmyouji: Fuhn. I’d heard there was quite the upstart underling samurai here. Is it you?

＊雑用、下働きの者。
*An odd jobs underling

陰陽師： 愚か者が、死んでから悔いろ！
Onmyouji: Fool! You’ll die regretting this!

無明： 姫のためなら命など要らぬわ！
Mumyou: Would give my life for the princess!

陰陽師： 。。。ほほお　面白い。。。やりよるわ。面白いのは大好きよ。
Onmyouji: Hoh hoh…how interesting. I do so love interesting activities.

陰陽師： 戯遊びをしようぞ！
姫を賭けた遊びよ！
Onmyouji: Let us have some sport!
We shall play for the princess!

陰陽師： 四日後私はまた来る！その時は、少しは抵抗してみせい。
特に無明とやら、期待しているぞ。
Onmyouji: Four days hence, I will return! At that time, try to resist me a bit.
I especially anticipate the fight with you, Mumyou.

陰陽師： いずれにせよ、岩姫は私のものだがな。
Onmyouji: In any event, I will make Iwahime mine!

陰陽師： ははははは。。。！
Onmyouji: Ha ha ha ha ha!

人： 姫は御無事か！？
Peson: Is the princess safe!?

人： 大丈夫ですか！？
Person: Are you all right!?

無明： はあ はあ はあ
Mumyou: Hah hah hah

無明： ご。。。御無事で。。。なにより。。。
Mumyou: As long…as she…is safe…

人： さあ、無明飲め！中納言様からふるまわれた酒だぞ！
Person: Come on, Mumyou, drink! This sake is from Chuunagon-sama!

人： 邪法師から姫を護ったとてな！
Person: You protected the princess from that jahoushi!

人： おぬしが一番手柄だからな！
Person: You did the most to deserve it!

陰陽師： 四日後また来る！
Onmyouji: In four days, I will return!

人： しかしよ、朽目とかいう邪法師ももの好きだぜ。
あの姫をもらいてえだってよ。
Person: But that Kuchime jahoushi is pretty strange
to want that princess.

人： ああ　あの「石姫」だぞ！笑っちまうな。
Person: Yeah, the Princess of Stone! What a riot!

人： よく宮中でも笑われてるんだと。いくら歌や琵琶が上手くても、
感情のない者に本当の心がわかるわけはないってよ。
Person: They laugh even in the imperial court. However well she sings or plays the biwa*,
you can’t know the real heart of someone without emotions.

人： そりゃそうだ！いくらいい女でも泣きも笑いもしねえ「石姫」を抱いたって、
まーだ石を相手にした方がマシってもんよなあ。
Person: Exactly! It’d be better to hold a real stone, rather than Iwahime,
who doesn’t cry or smile as a good woman would!

無明： 「吹雪」様。。。が、我等随身のお護りする方の名だ。
Mumyou: The name of the one we protect as attendants is Fubuki-sama.

無明： それ以外の名で呼ぶな。
Mumyou: Call her by any other name-

無明： オレが、殺すぞ。
Mumyou: And I will kill you.

無明： ＊蔵人様。。。
Mumyou: Kurabito*-sama…

*Keeper of the imperial archive

人： ふん、随身か。昼間の働きがあったからとてつけあがんなよ。
Person: Fuhn, attendant? You should have duties to perform during the day, so get to them.

無明： は。。。
Mumyou: Yessir…

人： しかし困ったコトだな。あの朽目に対抗できる唯一の陰陽師様がここしばらく、
京を離れておいでとは。。。
ああ、中納言殿も姫をあきらめるしかなさそうだのう。
Person: But it is problematic that they’ll send only a single onmyouji from
the capital against that Kuchime…
Yes, it seems they’ve given up on Chuunagon-dono and the princess.

人： あの朽目とかいう陰陽師に、勝てる術者など、この京にいないからなあ。。。
Person: There isn’t anyone in the capital that stands a chance against that Kuchime onmyouji…

Woman: That way! He ran that way!

女： 賊は姫に白刃をつきつけて、着物を獲っていきました。
Woman: The theif swung a naked blade and took some kimono.

無明： 。。。申し上げます。賊は捕らえました。
Mumyou: …I apologize. The theif has been captured.

人： うむ！下がれ。
Person: Hm! Leave.

無明： は。。。
Mumyou: Yessir…

吹雪： もし。。。
Fubuki: What…

吹雪： おぬし名は。。。？
Fubuki: What is your name?

無明： ははっ　無明です。井上無明と。
Mumyou: Madam! It’s Mumyou. Inoue Mumyou.

吹雪： いつぞや大路で子供らと遊んでおるのを見ました。。。
Fubuki: I’ve seen you playing with children on the highway from time to time…

吹雪： 大きな声で叫んで、
笑ってー
Fubuki: Yelling loudly…

Fubuki: It looked to be such fun…

無明： ははっ。全くもうお恥ずかしく。。。
Mumyou: Yes, ma’am. I’ll no longer do such shameful-

吹雪： 私の顔は。。。何の感情も表にあらわしてはくれません。。。
Fubuki: My face…never shows any expression of emotion…

吹雪： 賊に刃をむけられても。。。涙すら流れぬ。。。
Fubuki: Even when the thief held a knife on me…no tears would flow…

吹雪： 無明。。。
Fubuki: Mumyou…

吹雪： うらやましいぞ。。。
Fubuki: I envy you…

女： さ、姫。。。あまり下の者と話されますな。。。
Woman: Oh, princess…you shouldn’t speak to the lower classes so…

無用： ―姫！
Mumyou: Princess!

無明： 絶対に護ってみせるぞ！
Mumyou: I will protect you!

無明： はぐれ陰陽師など好きにさせてたまうか！！
Mumyou: I will not let some stray onmyouji do whatever he pleases!!

無明： お願いします！平安京一の陰陽師賀茂様にお願いします！！
Mumyou: Please! I need to speak with the great onmyouji Kamo-sama!!

無明： 中納言様の姫が邪な陰陽師に狙われています！
Mumyou: Chuunagon-sama’s daughter is being targeted by an evil onmyouji!

無明： 賀茂様のお力が必要なのです！
Mumyou: I need Kamo-sama’s help!

無明： なにとぞ　　なにとぞ！
Mumyou: Please! I beg you!

無明： おお！賀茂様はおられるか！？火急の用なのだ！
Mumyou: Oh! Is Kamo-sama here? This is an emergency!

子： 所用で遠方に出かけてしばらく戻らぬとのことです。。。
Child: He left on some business far from here and will not return any time soon…

無明： そ、そいか。。。やっぱり。。。
Mumyou: Oh…really? I see…

子： 。。。吹雪姫様を斯波朽目という術師が式神を使って狙うのですね。
Child: …Fubuki-sama is being targeted by Shiba Kuchime, a magician who uses shikigami, yes?

無明： ああ。。。さすがは賀茂様の童だな。耳が早い。
Mumyou: Yes. You’re definitely Kamo-sama’s child. You have sharp ears.

子： それでお侍様は姫をお助けしたいのですね。
Child: You wish to save the princess, Samurai-sama?

無明： あたりまえだ！
Mumyou: Of course!

無明： 姫が。。。姫が何をされたというのだ！？
なぜ、こんな目に遭ういわらがある！？
Mumyou: The princess…she’s never done anything wrong!
Why is this happening to her!?

無明： 人はうれしいい時に笑い、悲しい時に泣く。
それで普通に生きてゆけるのだ。姫にはそれがない。。。
生きているから生ずるすべての感情を己の内に封じて生きておるのだ。
Mumyou: When people are happy, they laugh. When they’re sad, they cry.
That is how a normal life is lived, but the princess doesn’t have that…
She lives her life without living, all her emotions sealed up inside.

無明： 石姫―感情のない女に歌など詠めるか。
琵琶など弾く資格もないわ などとそしられても、
姫は気丈に胸を張っていらしゃるのだ。。。
Mumyou: Iwahime… A woman without emotion could not sing.
She would not be capable of playing the biwa.
Even as they slander her, the princess stands resolute and proud…

無明： それがどれほぼ苦しいか、私ごときにはわかりもせぬが、
私は見てしまったのだ！
Mumyou: I had no idea how truly terrible it was,
but then I saw her!

無明： 笑いさざめく女房たちの中―
Mumyou: Amongst boisterously noisy court ladies-

無明： 一人で何の表情をもつくらない自分の顔を、
抓っている姫の姿をー
Mumyou: The princess pinching her own face, the only one without expression-

無明： その時から！！私は姫のためになんでもしてやろうと思ったのだ！
Mumyou: Since then, I would do anything for the princess!

無明： だが！だが現実にはどうだ！？
Mumyou: But what can I do now!?

無明： 私にはあの邪法師を倒すはおろか、式神を殺すこともできぬ！
Mumyou: It’s impossible to beat that jahoushi. I couldn’t kill his shikigami either!

無明： 私は！
Mumyou: I can’t-

子： 表情無き者に表情を戻す法―
強い感情の刺激を与うべし。。。
Child: The way to return emotions to one without them-
is to evoke a strong feeling in them…

子： 賀茂様の口伝です。。。－その者が経験したことなき強い恐怖、
哀しみを与えたなら、本人の心の堤防が壊れ、感情があふれだすであろうとの
ことです。恐怖の経験なら恐ろしさの顔が、悲しみなら悲しさの顔が。。。
つまり心の堤防を壊す。。。
Child: Kamo-sama says that if one breaks the dam on the heart of one has never
experienced true fear or sadness, it will overflow with emotion. Experience fear,
and it will be a terrified face. Sadness, a face of sorrow.
In other words, to break the dam of the heart-

子： 感情の先導者が必要ということなのです。
Child: It requires some vanguard of the heart.

無明： 心の。。。先導者。。。
Mumyou: A vanguard…of the heart?

子： それともうひとつ。吹雪姫を朽目から救う方法があるのですが。。。
Child: There is one more thing. There is a way to save Fubuki-hime from Kuchime…

無明： なにっ！？
Mumyou: What is it?

子： ですが、それは恐ろしい方法ですよ。
Child: But it is a terrible proposition.

無明： ここか。。。
Mumyou: Is this it?

無明： この破れ寺を棲み家とする物の怪に頼みがあって参った！
美しい気高い姫を喰いたくはないか？私はその女に恨みある者、
妖怪に喰らわせたくてならぬ！！
Mumyou: I have come to ask a favor of the mononoke who makes a home
of this destroyed temple! Wouldn’t you like to eat a beautiful, noble princess?
I have a grudge against her, and I want her to be eaten by a youkai!!

無明： どうだ、よい香りのする髪を！凝指の肌を！むさぼりたくはないか！？
Mumyou: How about it? Her hair smells sweet! Her skin is smooth!
Don’t you want to devour her!?

子： 近頃、京を恐怖に陥れている妖をご存知ですか？
Child: Do you know of the bakemono that recently assaulted the capital?

無明： ああ。。。噂には聞いているが。
Mumyou: Yes. I’ve heard the rumors.

子： なんでも、雷をまとい嵐にのって、
人々を喰らう恐ろしの鬼だとか。。。
Child: They say it is a dreadful man-eating demon
who rides storms laced with lightning…

子： その。。。妖に頼んでみるのです。
Child: You must ask a favor…of that bakemono.

無明： 明日の晩喰わしてやる出てこい！
Mumyou: Come to eat her tomorrow evening!

とら： へへ。。。
Tora: Heh heh…

とら： 本気かよ？
Tora: Are you serious?

無明： 明日、その姫の屋敷を陰陽師が襲う。。。
Mumyou: Tomorrow, an onmyouji will attack the princess’s home…

無明： 私が頼んだのさ。姫を喰いたくぱ早い者勝ち。。。
Mumyou: I implore you. To eat the princess, you must defeat him quickly.

無明： もっとも私にはどちらでも。。。よいがな。
Mumyou: After that…you may do as you like.

子： ですが、それは恐ろしい方法ですよ。
Child: But this is a terrible proposition.

箱： 姫の屋敷。
Box: The Princess’s Mansion.

人： 皆の者聞けい！邪法師・斯波朽目がくる！
Person: Everyone, listen! Jahoushi Shiba Kuchime is coming!

人： 我らは命にかえても姫をお護りするのだ！
Person: We must protect the princess with our lives!

人： そんなコトいったって、石姫のためにあんあバケモノとなあ。。。
Person: He says that, but going against such a bakemono for the Princess of Stone?

人： オレ、逃げようかなァ。。。
Person: We should just run…

女： あら　灯りが。。。
Girl: Oh? The lamp…

人： 来たな！はぐれ陰陽師が！我等正当な陰陽寮の者の力を見せてくれるわっ！
Person: The evil onmyouji is here! Show him the power of our own onmyouji!

人： 外法の技など、我ら侍の敵ではないわっ！
Person: Such strange arts are nothing to samurai such as us!

Fubuki: And this is my answer. You are beneath me.

陰陽師： あなたが承知せぬと、あなたの周りの者がどんどん死にますぞ。
Onmyouji: If you do not agree to do so, I will kill those around you one by one.

陰陽師： かまわぬ！邪魔する者は殺してしまえい！

陰陽師： 姫ぇ、おまえは私のものだァァ！
Onmyouji: Princess, you are mine!

無明： 朽目―っ！

Onmyouji: It’s just as you said, Mumyou…

陰陽師： 姫のためなら命などいらぬ！
Onmyouji: You will give your life for the princess!

陰陽師： ひ。。。

無明： くっ。
Mumyou: Kuh!

吹雪： 大丈夫ですか、無明。。。
Fubuki: Are you all right, Mumyou?

無明： だ。。。大丈夫にございます。こっ、この無明。。。

無明： これからもずっと、姫を護る所存でございますゆえ。。。

Tora: Ha ha ha! As promised, I get the woman!

無明： 姫！
Mumyou: Princess!

とら： さあて喰おうとするか。
Tora: Now, I shall eat you!

吹雪： わたくしは死ぬのか。。。？

とら： なんだあ？おめえこいつを喰ってほしかったんじゃねーのかァ。
Tora: What? You wanted me to eat her, didn’t you?

無明： 申しわけないが、私がいったことは陰陽師を退けるための方便。。。
Mumyou: I apologize, but I said that so that you would take care of the onmyouji…

無明： その方をあなたに食させるわけにはまいりません。
Mumyou: I will not allow you to eat her.

無明： 仕合ってもらいましょう。。。
Mumyou: Then let us duel.

とら： そうか。。。わしも、どうもハナシがうまいと思ってたんだ。。。
しかし、このわしをコケにした報いは。。。
Tora: I see. I was thinking that it was too good to be true.
But I will now take my recompense in spades -

とら： たっぷり受けてもらうぜえ！
Tora: For having been made to play the fool!

無明： おお！
Mumyou: Ooh!

子： これをお持ちください。
Child: Please take this.

無明： ―なんだ？
Mumyou: What is it?
