人： この義仲もそろそろ潮時かの。。。

義仲： よくぞ、木曽から京、そしてここめでついて来た！
大将としての動きも見事であった！
Yoshinaka: You’ve done well, accompanying me from Kiso to the capital and now here!
Your actions with the general were a sight to see!

巴： はっ。
Tomoe: Yessir!

巴： 義仲様、この巴にもったいなき御言葉！
Tomoe: Yoshinaka-sama, I am unworthy of such praise!

義仲： この義仲、八幡大菩薩の加護の下、ひとつ天下を狙ってみたが。。。
Yoshinaka: Under the divine protection of Hachiman*, I had designs on the whole country…

*the tutelary god of the Minamoto Clan

義仲： はっはっは。
信仰心が足らんかったようじゃ。
Yoshinaka: Ha ha ha!
It seems I wasn’t quite pious enough.

巴： 義仲様。。。
Tomoe: Yoshinaka-sama…

義仲： 巴、わしはこれより討ち死にをする。
Yoshinaka: Tomoe, I plan to die in battle now.

義仲： おまえは何処はなりとも落ちのびるがよい。
Yoshinaka: It’s best you go off somewhere to safety.

巴： 何を申されます。
この巴、命果てるまで義仲様と！
Tomoe: What are you saying?
I will end my life with you, Yoshinaka-sama!

義仲： 黙れい　巴！！
Yoshinaka: Silence, Tomoe!!

義仲： 確かにおまえは＊一人当千の女武者じゃ。
じゃが、この源義仲が最期の時まで。。。
女に後ろを護らせておったなど、世のいいもの笑いなるのがわからぬか！！
Yoshinaka: You are surely a woman warrior, a match for a thousand.
But, don’t you see the name of Minamoto Yoshinaka
will be a joke if I am protected by a woman in my final hour!

義仲： なァ　巴。。。
Yoshinaka: Hey, Tomoe…

Yoshinaka: Since we drove the Taira up to the capital…

義仲： 我らは、礼儀知らずの乱暴者だ、田舎猿だと、
公家や民どもに馬鹿にされたものよのう。。。
Yoshinaka: We’ve been called ill-mannered hooligans and country monkeys.
We’ve been made the butt of jokes by the nobles and the country folk…

義仲： おまえにしてもやれ、きれいなのに無粋な武者振り、
白拍子の舞でも舞えばよかろうなどの陰口。
さぞや口惜しかったであろう。。。
Yoshinaka: Even after all you’ve done, there’s malicious gossip that you’re
a pretty but unrefined warrior, a dancing girl who’d be better off dancing.
Such talk is mortifying…

義仲： もう。。。わしは。。。
Yoshinaka: I just…

義仲： 笑われるのはたくさんなのじゃ。
Yoshinaka: I’ve had enough of being laughed at.

義仲： 舞か。。。
ふん！巴は舞など舞わんでよいのじゃ。
Yoshinaka: Dance, huh?
Fuhn! Your dance is a good one, though.

巴： 義仲様。。。昔。。。こういうことがございました。。。
Tomoe: Yoshinka-sama…long ago…something like this happened…

義仲： 何じゃ。
Yoshinaka: What?

巴： ―今より１３年も昔のことですー
Tomoe: This happened 13 years ago.

巴： あの頃、我らが木曽の地を、縦横に荒らし回っていた、
物の怪の話を覚えておいででしょうか。。。
Tomoe: Do you remember the story of the mononoke that were running amok
up and down the lands of Kiso?

義仲： ああ、覚えている。近隣でも村全部がすべて喰いつくされたとか
大騒ぎであったな。
Yoshinaka: Yes, I remember. There was a big ruckus after all neighboring villages were consumed.

巴： 物の怪は仲間を率いて、大変な暴れようだったとか。。。
Tomoe: The mononoke who led this band was terribly violent…

義仲： 養い親で、そちの父であった仲原殿も、防備に忙しかったのを覚えておるわ。
しかし、我らの屋敷にはついに現れなかったのう。。。
Yohsinaka: I remember my godfather, your father Nakahara-dono, was busy preparing defences.
But it ended up never appearing in our area.

巴： 私の話はその物の怪についてなのでございます。
Tomoe: My story has to do with that mononoke.

人： たわけめ！
Father: Fool!

人： 女が弓を引いて何とする！何とする！女が太刀を持ちて何とする！
女は家を守り、持っておればよい。
Father: Why does a girl need to draw a bow! What for? Why does a girl carry a tachi*!
A woman should have something to protect the home.

*a longsword

人： 薙刀を持つ尼、刀使う女盗賊、居らぬではないが、
おまえはこの仲原の家の女であるぞ。
Father: You’re not some nun with a naginata or a sword-wielding woman thief!
You’re the daughter of the Nakahara Household!

人： 巴っ！
Father: Tomoe!

Father: You will give up Bushido at once and be more ladylike!

巴： いやじゃ！
Tomoe: No!

巴： 私は駒王と共にいたいのじゃ、父上。。。
Tomoe: I want to be with Komaou*, Chichiue*!

巴： なぜじゃ！今までは兄上達や駒王と一緒に馬に乗ったり、
太刀の修行をしたではないか。
Tomoe: Why! Haven’t I been riding horses and practicing sword with my brothers
and Komaou all this time?

父： あきらめよ、遊びは終いじゃ。
Father: Give this up. Play time is over.

父： そんなに義仲を慕うておるならば、時を持ちてあやつの妻になれば
良いではないか。。。
Father: You may love Yoshinaka dearly, but it’s best you won’t become his wife…

巴： 駒王には。。。許嫁か。。。
妹の山吹が。。。おれではないか。
Tomoe: Komaou’s fiancée…
It’s to be my sister Yamabuki then?

父： だから、わしは妾になるのも、別段変わったー
Father: So, it would be particularly strange if you were to be a concubine to-

父： あっ。
Father: Ah-

私は駒王と共にいたいのじゃ。。。
Tomoe: No…
I want to be with Komaou…

人： あれあれ、ありゃ仲原様ントコロの巴様でねえか。。。
Person: Look there. That’s Tomoe-sama from Nakahara-sama’s Household, isn’t it?

人： まァたやんちゃしてお守り役から逃げてるのかねえ。。。
Person: Is she running away from her guardians again?

人： 仲原の殿ントコは男の兄第が頼もしいし、養子の義仲様も立派で、
まァええこったが。。。
Person: The sons of the lord of Nakahara are very promising.
His adoptive son Yoshinaka-sama is a splendid man…

人： 長女の巴様がそれをマネて、あんな男勝りになっちまって。。。
Person: But his oldest girl Tomoe-sama seems to think she can win him by imitating him…

人： はっはァ。。。殿様は困ってなさるってさァ。。。
Person: Hah hah! Quite a bit of trouble for the nobles, eh?

いずれ戦にゆく駒王を、私は持たねばならぬ。
Tomoe: How would that shape up…even if I were Komaou’s woman?
Anytime he went to war, I wouldn’t be of any use.

巴： 待つなんていやじゃ。。。私はついてゆく。。。
駒王のゆく処になら何処へだってついてゆく。。。
Tomoe: I don’t want to wait for him. I want to follow…
To follow Komaou wherever he goes…

巴： でも。。。！！
Tomoe: But…

人： ならんならん。何度いえばわかるんじゃ！
Person: You can’t! How many times must I say it for you to understand!

人： 我らは、樋口様よりこの山に棲んで悪行をなす、物の怪の
討伐の命を受けた一団ぞ。
尼を物の怪退治に連れ行けるか。
Person: We are the group ordered by Higuchi-dono to subjugate the mononoke
dwelling in these mountains and commiting atrocities.
We can’t let some nun follow us to exorcise the mononoke.

尼： そうおっしゃらずにお願いいたします。。。
Nun: As you say but I beg you…

人： じゃ尼さんは、どうやっておっかねえ物の怪を退治するんだよ。
Person: Well, Ama*-san, how would you exorcise such a horrific mononoke?

*nun

尼： 心から仏の慈悲を説いて聞かせます。
Nun: By preaching Buddha’s benevolence with all my heart.

尼： そして待つのです。
Nun: And then waiting.

人： 時がたてば必ずや物の怪といえども、発心して。。。
Nun: It may take time, but the mononoke will surely have a change of heart…

人： 行いを改めるでございましょう。
Nun: And it will reform its deeds.

人： はははこりゃいいや。
Person: Ha ha ha! That’s just great!

人： 物の怪に説教か。。。
Person: Preaching to a mononoke…

尼： あ。。。あの。。。
Nun: Ah…wait…

巴： 尼様。。。
Tomoe: Ama-sama…

巴： どうしてもこの山に登るなら。。。私が案内してあげよう。
Tomoe: If you can manage to get up this mountain…I’ll guide you on your way.

尼： ほんにありがたいことです。。。見るところ、
立ち居振る舞いに品がありますれば。。。
いったい、どちらの姫様でございましょう。
Nun: Thank you very much. Now that I see you,
there is such dignity in your deportment.
You must be a princess of some land.

巴： ははは、田舎武士の娘じゃ、巴という。。。
Tomoe: Ha ha ha, just a country warrior called Tomoe.

巴： じゃが尼様、この山に妖が棲むという噂。。。
あまり当てにはならぬぞ。
私はよく来るから。。。
Tomoe: So, Ama-san, those rumors about bakemono living in these mountains
aren’t very reliable.
I come through here all the time.

尼： それがなぜにこの老尼を案内して、ここまでいらっしゃったのでしょう。
Nun: But why did you come here and guide an old nun?

巴： 尼様はさっき、時がたてば。。。待っておれば、
物の怪といえども行いを改めるといった。。。
Tomoe: Ama-sama, before…you said that if you waited,
the mononoke would change its ways in the course of time…

巴： それはまことだろうか。。。？待つことは。。。
時がたつことはよいことなのか。。。？
Tomoe: Is that really true? Do good things come from waiting?

尼： そうですとも。。。心静かにして祈り、仏にすがって待っておれば、
必ずや望みはかないましょう。
Tomoe: Yes, of course. If you pray quietly, rely upon Buddha, and wait,
your wish will surely be fulfilled.

巴： そうか。。。
Tomoe: Is that so…

尼： 巴様は、何か憂き事をお持ちなのですか？
Nun: Tomoe-sama, is there something distressing you?

尼： そうですか。。。では、その殿方のために。。。
武の道を選ぼうとしていらっしゃったのに。。。
Nun: I see. So you have choosen Bushidou
for the sake of this young man…

巴： 父は、女が武道をやるのを心良く思わぬ。。。
Tomoe: My father deeply believes that woman cannot be warriors.

巴： それに。。。
Tomoe: Besides…

巴： 父上のおっしゃる事にも一理あるように思えるのじゃ。。。
Tomoe: There’s another reason aside from my father’s words…

巴： 昨日、私は、駒王達と家の強弓を引いてみた。
Tomoe: Yesterday, I was practicing goukyuu* with Komaou and my brothers.

*a very tightly drawn bow

巴： 兄達も駒王も引けるのに。。。
Tomoe: My brothers and Komaou could all draw theirs…

巴： どんなに力んでみても、強弓は引けなかった。。。
Tomoe: But no matter how hard I tried, I couldn’t.

義仲： よいではないか。巴、おまえは馬を巧みにつかう。
Yoshinaka: That’s all right, Tomoe. You’re still really good at horses.

巴： 駒王にそういわれた時、不覚にも涙が出た。
Tomoe: When Komaou said that, tears started streaming down my face.

巴： 女は男にはなれぬ。。。
Tomoe: A woman cannot be a man…

巴： 我が身を悔しさのあまり、引き裂きたくなった。。。
Tomoe: I was torn by such embarrassment…

巴： やはり、わたしは駒王を待つしかないのじゃろうか。。。
あるいは。。。祈るか。。。
Tomoe: Is waiting fro Komaou really all that I can do?
Wait…and pray?

尼： そうですとも仏の慈悲におすがるして。。。
Tomoe: Just that and rely on the mercy of Buddha….

尼： 待っておればどうにかなりましょうとも。。。
Nun: Just wait to see what will happen…

巴： しかし、物の怪はでぬなァ。。。
Tomoe: But, as for the mononoke,

巴： 先に行った武者でももさぞや。。。
Tomoe: Surely the other warriors who came before have-

巴： がっか。。。
Tomoe: Gah!

妖： 娘はうまそうだよォ。。。
Bakemono: The girl looks delicious…

Tora: Underlings!

とら： その女はわしが喰らうのよ！
Tora: The one who’ll eat that girl-

とら： この長飛丸様がなァア。。。
Tora: -is me, Nagatobimaru-sama.

妖： かかか、ええにおいじゃなァア。。。
Bakemono: Kah kah kah! She smells good…

妖： おっとへへへ。。。
Bakemono: No-no. Heh heh heh…

Nun: Tomoe-sama!

巴： 尼様。。。に、逃げよ。。。
Tomoe: Ama-sama…r-run…

尼： いいえ。。。
Nun: No…

妖： 聞いてたぞ聞いてたぞ。
Bakemono: We heard. We heard.

妖： オレ達に説教すんだってなァア。。。
Bakemono: You’re going to preach to us, eh?

妖： してみろよ　してみろよ～！！
Bakemono: Try it! Come on, try it!!

巴： みなさんのような物の怪も仏はきっとお救いくださいます。
さあ心静かに祈りましょう。
Tomoe: Buddha can save mononoke, just like everyone else.
Now, let us calmly pray.

尼： そして極楽を思うて待つのです。
Nun: Let us wait and think of Paradise.

尼： そうすれば必ず良いことがー
Nun: If we do, surely something good-

とら： バッカヤロウ！こいつはほかのヤツが化けてんだよっ。
Tora: Fools! He transformed himself!

とら： ここらはわしらの縄張りだァ。
Tora: This is my turf!

とら： 数で勝てる！
このわしの偽者をぶっつぶせえ。
Tora: We’ve got the numbers!
Crush that fake me!

Tomoe: Ah…ah…

とら： 。。。ってこった、女。なかなか人間の真似、うまかったろ。。。
こいつら、わしが直接来たんじゃ逃げちまうんでな。。。

Tora: …You see, girl. I’m pretty good at mimicking humans…
If they faced me directly, they would have run…
So I disquised myself…

巴： あの妖は。。。？
Tomoe: And that bakemono-

とら： わしの真似さ。。。
けっ、わしも名が売れたモンだぜ。
わしのカッコしてると手下を集めやすいんだろ。。。
Tora: The one mimicking me…
Keh, he even used my name.
I bet it was easy to gather underlings using my shape…

とら： そんなコトはない！
“Tora”: That’s not true!

とら： みんな行けええ。
“Tora”: Everyone, get him!

Tomoe: Y-you have to fight to show them that you’re the real one?

とら： へっ、そうかもな。
Tora: Heh, that might be so.

巴： なら、なんでわざわざ来た！？
人間に化け、ヤツらの真っただ中に。。。
どこか別の国におとなしくしていれば！
Tomoe: Then why did you come here on purpose!?
You made yourself human and walked right in among them…
You could have just gone off to some other land!

とら： そうすりゃどーなる？
Tora: And then what?

とら： 時がただ流れていってどーなる？
Tora: What would have happened with time?

とら： 乗りてえ風に遅れたヤツは間抜けってんだ。
Tora: Anyone who waits for a wind to ride is a fool.

とら： 人間に化けてる間に覚えたコトバ。。。
「祈って待っとれば今にいいコトありマスヨ」。。。
Tora: Remember what I said when I was a human…

とら： よォ、偽者ォ。会いたかったぜえ。。。
Tora: Yo, Fake. I’ve been dying to meet you…

妖： ふ。。。ふひひ。。。いくら長飛丸でも。。。
今さらこれだけのヤツらに勝てるかよ。。。
Bakemono: Fuh… Fuhihi…You may be Nagatobimaru…
How can you hope to beat them all in the end?

とら： 聞いておくぜ。。。
Tora: Glad you asked…

妖： ひ。。。ひひいいいい。
Bakemono: Hih- Hiiiiiiiih!

そのような事があったとはな。。。
Yoshinaka: I see, Tomoe.
It was just like this…

巴： 私も。。。今まで夢の如くに思うておりました故。。。
Tomoe: Until now, I too thought of it like a dream…

義仲： はは。。。よくも本物の物の怪の方に食われなかったものよ。。。
Yohsinaka: Ha ha! How is it you weren’t eaten by the real mononoke?

巴： は。。。ほかの化生を滅ぼした後、
山奥に消えゆきましたので。。。
Tomoe: Well, after he had destroyed the other keshou*,
he disappeared into the mountains…

義仲： わしは。。。
その物の怪にはなれなかったな。。。
Yoshinaka: I won’t be able to end this like that mononoke…

巴： 私もです、義仲様。。。
人は誰も物の怪にはなれませぬ。。。
Tomoe: Neither will I, Yoshinaka-sama…
No human can become a mononoke…

巴： じゃが。。。
私は満足している。。。
Tomoe: But…
I am satisfied…

Yoshinaka: Hah! Ha ha ha ha!

義仲： 巴は、その巴が一番美しい。
Yoshinaka: That Tomoe is the most beautiful.

人： 義仲ァ、覚悟ォ。
Person: Yoshinaka, prepare yourself!

巴： 義仲様、失礼つかまつる。
Tomoe: Yoshinaka-sama, please excuse me!

巴： やァやァ、これは木曽殿の乳母子に中三権守兼遠が娘！
Tomoe: Yah yah! I am the daughter of Chuuza Gonnokami Kanetou, of Kiso-dono!

木曽殿に御目にかける最期の巴の戦の相手をせよや！
Tomoe: I am the woman Tomoe!
I will show Kiso-dono the opponent in the last battle I will ever fight!

人： 御田八郎師重お相手いたす。
Person: Your opponent is Ondano Hachirou Moroshige!

Tomoe: Yes, I-
can’t defeat my enemies like that mononoke…

あの物の怪と会うていなくば。。。
Tomoe: However…
If I had not met that mononoke…

巴： 私は今、このように。。。
満ち足りた心でいられたろうか。。。
Tomoe: Would I be…
content with this, as I am now?

義仲： あっぱれ！巴。
Yoshinaka: Well done, Tomoe!

駒王は言うてくれるのじゃな。。。
I will dance as I do best…yes…
That’s what Komaou said…

箱： この戦いのあと木曽義仲は、近江国・粟津で討たれる。
Box: After the battle, Kiso Yoshinaka was killed at Ouminkuni, Awazu.

箱： 巴御前の消息は諸説あって定かではないが。。。
力強く生きていったことは確かである。。。
Box: Reports of Tomoe Gozen are various and indefinite…
But it is certain that she lived fiercely…

巴： じゃがな駒王。。。
お主の傍らで、
私の心はずっとー待っておったのじゃよ。。。
いつも。。。
あの物の怪と共にな。。。
Tomoe: Well, Komaou…
By your side,
My heart will always be…
Forever…
Along with that mononoke…
