Title: Page 2 Stupidity and Intelligence
Page 66:
Sign: Mashiro
Mom: Moritakaaaaa, Takagi-kun is here to see yooooou! Please hurry!
Saikou: Huh?
SFX: SHAH
Saikou: So annoying.
Page 67:
Takagi: Morning, Saikou.
Saikou: Please cut out both that calling me "Saikou" and suddenly showing up to meet me in the morning.
SFX: Kacha
Shuujin: Come on. I'll call you Saikou and you call me Shuuto. That's what my friends call me.
Saikou: Someone named Moritaka being called Saikou and someone named Akito being called Shuuto are a bit different.
TL Note: The name "Moritaka" uses the same kanji (最高) as the Japanese word for "the best", "Saikou". The kanjis in "Akito" (秋人) can also be pronounced "Shuuto", and is like the English word "shoot".
Takagi: ? How are they different?
Saikou: The name "Shuuto" gives off a kinda cool soccer image.
"Saikou" feels like I'm being made fun of.
Small Bubbles: Saikou!
Saikou!
Saikou: All right, then I'm gonna call you Shuujin.
TL Note: "Shuujin" is a Japanese word for "prisoner".
Shuujin: Shuujin!? Like a criminal!?
Saikou: It's fine, isn't it? Akito can be read that way, too, can't it, Shuujin?
Shuujin: ..........
Page 68:
Shuujin: Your uncle died 3 years ago, right Saikou?
Saikou: Did you check up on it?
Shuujin: We're neighbors. My parents knew that your uncle died, but they didn't know he was the mangaka Kawaguchi Tarou.
It is a penname after all. His real name is Mashiro Nobuhiro. It seems it only said "Mangaka dies" in the corner of some newspaper .
Books: Chou Hero Densetsu
Kawaguchi Tarou
Saikou: If a mangaka can't get serialized, they're just a NEET.
After being a NEET for 7 consecutive years, it'd be no wonder you'd wanted to hang yourself.
Shuujin: He committed suicide?
Saikou: My parents said he died of overwork, but having barely had work for 7 years, he wouldn't be overworking, right?
Page 69:
Saikou: So do you wanna give up on being a mangaka? It'd be entertaining to see you hang yourself, though, Shuujin.
But even if you quit, I'm gonna do it.
Shuujin: No, I'm gonna do it, too! Teamed up with you, we'll be the top mangakas in Japan!
Saikou: Like I said, I haven't decided if I'm teaming up with you or not.
Shuujin: That again? I'm the one who inspired you to do it in the first place, aren't I?
Saikou: It wasn't you, it was Azuki.
Shuujin: E~~~~H?
Saikou: But you have my thanks, cupid Shuujin-kun.
Shuujin: .........
Page 70:
Saikou: Azuki......
Teacher: Okay, let's begin.
SFX: KIIIN KOOOHN
Saikou: Azuki's the same as always......
Even though something like that happened yesterday......
Page 71:
Saikou: If that dream comes true,
please marry me!
Azuki: Okay, I promise.
Until our dream comes true, we'll work hard without looking at each other.
Saikou: The dream of Azuki becoming a seiyuu and me becoming a mangaka... marriage...
Marriage with Azuki.
SFX: DOKI DOKI DOKI DOKI DOKI (heartbeat)
Saikou: Haaaaaaaah......
This is no good...
Page 72:
Saikou: Sensei.
Teacher: What is it, Mashiro?
Saikou: I'm not feeling good, so could I rest in the infirmary until second period?
Azuki: ...........
Shuujin: It's probably because he couldn't sleep last night.
Teacher: Your complexion certainly doesn't look good. You can take a retest, if you want.
Saikou: No, I finished half, this much is fine.
SFX: GATA
SFX: GARA...
Azuki: I wonder what's wrong with Mashiro-kun?
I hope he's all right...
Page 73:
Shuujin: Sensei, me too... I spent all last night studying and I'm feeling dizzy, can I go?
Though really, I got plenty of sleep.
I finished the test.
Teacher: What? You, too, Takagi? Well I guess it's all right...
Azuki: Mashiro-kun and Takagi-kun.
He actually said something like "Sensei, me too."
SFX: Kusu (chuckle)
Sign: Infirmary
Nurse: Hm? You, too, Takagi?
Shuujin: Sorry. I didn't get enough sleep, so I'll be borrowing a bed.
Saikou: ! Takagi?
Page 74:
Shuujin: Are you all right, Saikou?
Saikou: This guy is seriously nosey.
SFX: Nuh...
Saikou: It was kind of suffocating to be in the classroom.
Shuujin: Suffocating? From lack of sleep?
Saikou: ..........
It's like my chest got tight from being in the same classroom as Azuki...
Shuujin: AHAHA
Page 75:
Nurse: Are you two fooling around!?
Shuujin: S-Sorry.
Your chest felt tight? Has there been any progress since then?
Saikou: ? No, none.
Shuujin: "None"? Did you guys exchange email addresses?
Saikou: No, we didn't.
Shuujin: HUH!?
Nurse: Hey, if you're well enough to talk, then please go back to your classroom!
Shuujin: We can't talk here, let's go.
Saikou: Fine with me.
Thank you very much, we're going back.
Nurse: You weren't even here for 3 minutes. Why did you two come here?
Page 76:
Shuujin: I'll ask for Azuki's address for you.
Saikou: That's okay. I'd feel pretty pathetic if you did that.
Shuujin: But you can't ask yourself, right?
Saikou: If I could talk to her that easily, I wouldn't be stressing over this.
Shuujin: .........
Saikou.
Shuujin: You really do like Azuki, don't you?
Page 77:
Saikou: Y... Yeah.
That's why I proposed, isn't it?
Shuujin: But I like people like you two, Saikou.
Saikou: People like us?
Like? You're as creepy as always.
Shuujin: Look at other people that're going out. In their third year of middle school they've already done it.
And they're boasting about it openly like idiots.
Compared to them, I like people who get choked up from just being in the same classroom way better.
Saikou: Like I said, why good's it do me to be liked by you?
Shuujin: But now it's really sealed that we'll team up.
Saikou: Why?
Shuujin: Because I'm the only one that knows you like Azuki.
Saikou: Yeah.
Don't tell anybody, okay?
Page 78:
Shuujin: So the only one who you can talk about your love troubles with is me.
We're each other's closest friends.
So let's combine our talents in both love and manga and give it everything we've got!
Saikou: Love is love, manga is manga.
Shuujin: .........Ah, yeah.
Saikou: Anyhow, are you okay with not going back? There's still time...
Shuujin: I already did the test perfectly, full marks without a doubt.
Saikou: I really don't get you. You've got your sights set on being a mangaka, so why're you studying so hard?
You don't need an academic background for this.
Shuujin: Insurance.
Even I'm not 100% sure I can make it.
Page 79:
Saikou: Like I thought... That's a wise way to live.
Do you see everyone in the class as idiots?
Shuujin: Eh?
Saikou: Do you think you're the smartest one in the class?
Shuujin: What's with such an unpleasant question all of a sudden!?
Saikou: So, you do?
So as for being a mangaka, you think unless you're smart you can't become one, don't you?
Shuujin: !
I do think that. Or at the least, I think it's impossible if you're an idiot.
Oh, I get it. If that's what you mean, I'll answer you.
"Good at studying equals smart",
I don't think that, but I think I'd place myself as third in the class.
Saikou: Third? You're pretty modest.
Who're the two you placed as above yourself? Of course, not me.
Page 80:
Shuujin: You and Azuki.
Saikou: Huh?
I knew it, you're such an idiot......
Shuujin: You're smart, Saikou. We've only been in the same class for two months, but I knew it as soon as I saw you.
I didn't invite you just because you're good at drawing, brains and sense are integral, as well. That's the reason I asked you.
And as for that "Do you see everyone in the class as idiots?" question,
It's because you yourself see everyone as idiots that you asked that, isn't that right, Saikou?
Saikou: .........
He really is smart.
Well, whatever, let's get off me for a second.
You think Azuki is smart? That's because she seems to study and is in the upper half of the grade in rank, right?
And she's trying to become a seiyuu... isn't that kinda foolish?
Shuujin: I think Azuki is only pretending to study.
Page 81:
Saikou: Pretending?
Shuujin: Real idiots are the ones who take notes like crazy, ask the teacher questions, and study at home, and still end up at the bottom.
Saikou: Yeah, well...
Shuujin: Azuki isn't calculating it, she's being a normal girl.
Saikou: ? I don't get what you're saying. Could you say it in a way that's easier to understand?
おしとやかに行儀よくしてるのが女の子らしい
Shuujin: How should I put this... To behave gracefully all the time is girlish. Knowing that that's most important is learned naturally.
She's a girl, so being serious is good and just studying a medium amount is good. The sense that overdoing it is uncute is something they have from birth.
Shuujin: That's something clever, isn't it?
Saikou: Hmm, don't you think you're reading too far into it?
Shuujin: Nope. It's because Azuki is smart that you're attracted to her.
Page 82:
Shuujin: You saw Azuki's house, right? Even without knowing what her parents do, with that kind of house you know they must excel at something or they wouldn't have it. That or they're doing something illegal.
And even if they are, they're not getting caught, so they're amazing, right?
It's the blood, blood.
Saikou: Again with blood? The parents are skillful so their child is smart, too...? That's a pretty simple notion, but I guess parents are something to consider.
Shuujin: I like the 10,000 yen bill, but I hate Fukuzawa Yukichi.
TL Note: Fukuzawa Yukichi is a major Japanese historical figure who preached about individualism and equal opportunity. He also appears on the 10,000 yen bill.
「天は人の上に人をつくらず人の下に人をつくらず」
Shuujin: When stuff like "The heavens don't make a person above or below one another" is written in a book, I think it "It'd be nice if that were true." should be added after it.
Saikou: Haha, I get it. The heavens aren't what make humans, it's parents. And from the moment you're born your parents make a huge difference in your life.
Page 83:
Shuujin: Even aiming to become a seiyuu, it's a common dream for girls nowadays, which makes it a natural choice. You can't think of those girls dreaming as anything but having the utmost amount of fun.
It doesn't feel anything like how we're being corned into our futures and things.
Saikou: Because she's a girl?
Shuujin: Yes, because she's a girl, you get it. "Becoming a cute bridge is a the greatest happiness a woman can achieve" is normally something thought of from birth.
So until then, no, even if they do get married, they want to stay girlishly graceful and cute.
It's not planned out, so it makes her 100 times smarter than the girl who's the best studier, Iwase.
No matter how cute a girl is, if she's stupid, even you don't like her, right?
Iwase is the opposite, she's bad looking or anything, but you wouldn't like her, would you?
She certainly has the best grades for a girl in the class, but I don't like that proud personality. It even makes me think of her as stupid.
Page 84:
家庭や心の豊かい
Shuujin: Even I said that Azuki was good, didn't I? Azuki's charm comes from her having come from a good household and having a wealth of spirit, and she has a dignity that's born out of cleverness, don't you think?
Saikou: Dignity......?
Anyhow, you sure are praising her a lot.
妬きも焦りもしない
Shuujin: I may be praising her, but you're not getting jealous or impatient because you're smart, Saikou.
Saikou: Like I thought, he's absolutely smarter than me, Takagi Akito.
And the way he thinks......
Shuujin,
Shuujin: Hm? Did you get jealous? [Italics on "Did".]
Page 85:
Saikou: I think I might team up with you after all.
Shuujin: Eh!?
Saying it like suddenly like that is... kinda creepy but, I'm happy to hear it...
Saikou: Your way of thinking is sorta similar to mine, and I think a story you made would be interesting.
Shuujin: Ooh, really? So you finally recognized my talent? Then let's both do our best!!
Saikou: I said "might". I just mean if a story you write is interesting, I'll make it a name.
Shuujin: Hm? Name?
Saikou: HUH? Even after all that talking about mangaka being your dream, you don't even know what "name" means?
Shuujin: No, I don't.
Second period's started. Do you think you can hold out one more hour?
Saikou: Yeah, I'll try.
Shuujin: So what's a "name"?
Saikou: Look it up yourself, you total noob.
SFX: KIIIIN KOOOHN
Page 86:
Saikou: I totally bombed the test but somehow I got through it.
Haaaah.
Someone: It's finally over.
I'm going home to study for tomorrow's test.
SFX: GATA GATA
Shuujin: Saikou-kun, let's go home.
I've been thinking about your uncle's suicide, you told me about.
Saikou: ?
Shuujin: Do you think your parents would be against you becoming a mangaka?
Saikou: !
I didn't think of that. Rather, I didn't have time to think about it.
It's certainly true uncle died in a way like that, they'll definitely be against the idea.
When I get home, I'll convince them.
Shuujin: Are you really all right? Not about that, your complexion's really looked bad today.
Saikou: Yeah, a lot's happened really suddenly. It's tough, but I'm getting through it one thing at a time.
Page 87:
Saikou: The rules in my house are like this,
Mom: What is it? You're being so formal.
Saikou: If there's something I want or something or need to discuss, I talk to mom first.
And when I'm not around, my mom tells my dad. Then if my dad is against it, later she'll tell me. If no objections come back, then that means it's okay and goes though.
Mom: Please hurry up and say it.
Saikou: Um...
In other words, my dad and I have almost never had a serious talk.
I'm going to be a mangaka.
Mom: No.
Saikou: That sure was a fast reply.
Page 88:
Saikou: I'll go to high school and college, like normal. If nothing comes of it by the time I'm out of college, I'll give it up.
Mom: By that you mean you'll go to just any old school and just draw manga, right?
Even your uncle had his debut hen he was in college. If I just let you do this here, you'd just be doing the same thing as him. Forget about manga and concentrate on your studies.
Saikou: I knew there'd be a comparison to uncle.
You don't know for sure that I'd go down the same path as uncle. There's defiantly no reason to think I'd kill myself!
Mom: !
Do you think your uncle committed suicide!?
Saikou: Dammit, I let it slip out...
Mom: Your uncle over exerted himself.........
Saikou: Yeah, sorry, I know. He wasn't selling anymore and in order to get selling again he worked too hard... I mean that to draw until you die is like suicide in a way...
Mom: Anyhow, you can't. And I'm sure your father wouldn't allow it either.
SFX: TAN
Mom: All right? End of discussion.
Page 89:
Spines: Manga King
Saikou: I don't care what they say, I'm going to become a mangaka even if I'm disowned.
Dad's home.
SFX: PIN POOOHN
Saikou: 10 minutes... No, 5 minutes?
That was fast.
Must mean dad's giving a fast reply, too...
SFX :TOH TOH TOH
Mom: Moritaka, I'm coming in.
Saikou: G... Go ahead.
Mom: I talked to your father.
Saikou: Yeah?
Page 90:
Mom: "Let him do it."
"Men have dreams that a women couldn't understand".
is what he said.
Saikou: For some reason I felt like I was about to cry.
But I didn't want to show tears to my mom, so I held back.
Mom: Come here.
Saikou: Eh?
Mom: Your grandfather's room.
He's the one who lost a son to manga, so we have to let him know.
You'll tell him yourself.
Saikou: I see...
Page 91:
Saikou: Grandpa.
Grandpa: What is it, Moritaka?
Saikou: I'm going to be a mangaka.
Grandpa: Heeeh, a mangaka, eh?
Saikou: Yes.
"Heeeh"?
Grandpa: Upsy daisy.
SFX: GOSOGOSO (rummaging)
Page 92:
Grandpa: Take this, Moritaka.
Saikou: A key?
SFX: Chara
Mom: Grandpa!
...Father in law, is this your answer?
Grandpa: Yes.
Saikou: What are these keys...?
Mom: ......
Grandpa: The keys to your uncle's room.
Saikou: !?
Page 93:
Grandpa: Nobihiro's room, his workplace has been left the same as from when he died.
You have it, Moritaka.
Saikou: G... Grandpa.
No, it's not like I'm officially a mangaka yet.
It's still 10 years too early to have a workplace...
Grandpa: That's true. You won't seriously be using it for a long time, but there's nothing wrong with being prepared early.
And that place is packed with things you need to become a mangaka, isn't it?
What? Do you not need it?
Page 94:
Saikou: Thank you.
Is it all right if I go over there now?
Mom: What're you talking about? It's past 10 already and you have a test tomorrow...
Grandpa: Go.
Saikou: Thank you, I'm gonna get ready and go.
Mom: Father-in-law...
Grandpa: Moritaka has changed, hasn't he? I had really been worried that he would be a failure, but
he's fine like this.
Saikou: Train fare and my cell phone and.........
Why did I buy a toy like this, am I an idiot...?
SFX: BASAH
Page 95:
Saikou: Uncle's workplace...
It's been 3 years...
Shuujin: Yahooooo! My beloved Saikou-chan, did you make any progress with Azuki?
Saikou: I'll show you a name, so come on.
Shuujin: Huh?
Saikou: I got my uncle's work place!
Shuujin: Eh?
Saikou: I got the workplace that my uncle left after he died!
Shuujin: D-Do you mean they gave it to you when you said you were going to be a mangaka?
Saikou: Yes.
Shuujin: Awesooooome!
Where are you now?
Saikou: I'm heading towards the northern Yakusa Station. The workplace is in Yakusa.
Shuujin: Ooh, one stop, huh? I'm leaving right now, wait for me at the station.
Saikou: And so, that night Shuujin and I headed to my uncle's workplace.
