[Bakuman 5 Translation by Kewl0210]

Someone: ......
Mashiro!
Wake up, Mashiro!
Title: Page 5 Time and Key
Mashiro: Eh?
Uh-oh! I fell asleep in the middle of a test!
SFX: GATAAAAAN Ahahahahaha
SFX: HAHAHAHAHA
Someone: Are you all right? I've never seen someone fall asleep during a midterm.
Saikou: Haaaaah now Azuki and everyone's gonna think I studied a whole ton.----
but I totally bombed it, so then they're all gonna think I'm a total idiot.
Page 146:
Shuujin: So you were really up all night practicing drawing?
Saikou: Yeah. I was at the workplace until midnight.
I got called by my parents and went home, then kept it up until I came to school.
Title: Page 5 Time and Key
SFX: Yoroyoro (teetering) GON
Saikou: When I still couldn't cool down, taking the test with this pen gave me momentum.
So I could at least finish it without falling asleep.
Shuujin: Woah,
He really did bring it......
Saikou: Anyhow, if I can't get used to this, the whole thing's not gonna happen.
Manga doesn't have limits.
Shuujin: Limits?
Page 147:
Saikou: It's not like a test which has answers. There's no upper limit to drawings or stories.
The better you can make them, the better off you are.
Shuujin: Yeah.
Saikou: I've never felt like time was short, nor ever devoted myself so seriously to something before now.
Shuujin: .......
Saikou: Well I'm headed straight to the work place, you wanna come too?
Shuujin: Sure!
Saikou: You seem happy, Shuujin.
Keys: *Jingle*
SFX: Chara chara (jingle)
Saikou: Here's your duplicate key, Shuujin.
Shuujin: Can... Can I really have it?
Saikou: It's better for you to be able to go whenever you want.
Shuujin: Thanks.
Page 148:
Shuujin: Awesoooome! I knew your talent for drawing wasn't half bad! After just one day you're able to do manga quality drawings!
Saikou: I'm saying those are totally no good.
Shuujin: What about them?
Saikou: The lines are stiff and they're way too thick. Those aren't drawings that cam be used for manga.
Shuujin: R... Really?
For me this seems plenty good... I mean, it's already better than lesser-skilled mangakas, isn't it?
Shuujin: I knew G-pens would be tough...
SFX: Kachi
Page 149:
Saikou: I can't draw the thickness of what I'm imagining in my head.
Shuujin: Manga doesn't have limits, huh...? The way Saikou's going he's going to get amazingly good.
Saikou: It was giving me trouble, so I tried using a kabura pen once, too.
Saikou: Hm? A kabura pen?
TL Note: The "kabura" in the pen name means "turnip", coming from the shape.
Shuujin: Yeah. When I hear of dip pens I think of those. That's the most normally used one, right?
Saikou: Uncle used these, not being able to figure out G-pens, either. He was told to use G-pens by his editor so he tried to take that on, but because of its odd tendencies he couldn't master it so he just always used the kaburas.
It's hard to get different line strengths, but it's easy to draw lines at a fixed thickness with.
SFX: Su---...
Page 150:
Saikou: I tried drawing these, yesterday, too.
Kabura pens are good for drawing backgrounds and round pens are good for extra-thin lines.
Shuujin: These are goooooood! But I better not say so. Saikou's clearly still not satisfied with them.
Page 151:
Shuujin: S-So these are what were in those boxes marked "materials"? Background catalogs that he looked at and drew, huh?
Books: Background Catalog
Shuujin: So you took them all out and put them on the rack on your desk?
SFX: DON
Shuujin: Before coming here I had no idea they sold these kinds of data materials for manga.
Book: Background
Catalog
13 Campus Life Edition
Saikou: I can see images most kinds of places using a computer, but if it's a drawing like this I can reproduce it easier.
Shuujin: So what are "effects", exactly?
Saikou: They're all in the desk.
SFX: Gata
Page 152:
Shuujin These, huh?
Saikou: It looks like they're numbered for directing assistants, but first I have to be able to do them myself.
For now I got out some books that have manga drawing techniques, but haven't gotten to them yet.
Book: Manga Techniques
Ways to Draw Manga Vol. 1
Saikou: There's no way I'd get that far in one day.
I've even gotta do the screen tones myself.
Shuujin: Ah, I see. There sure is a lot you've gotta do.
Page 153:
Saikou: Yeah, well I told you how much I have to master before I can draw something we can bring in. I'm just now realizing it and getting impatient.
Still humans are easy, but movement, facial expressions, composition, I've got to have them all in mind.
It's totally different from drawing still-life pictures and landscapes... I don't know how long it's gonna take...
Thinking about it now, it seems amazing that Uncle took three years to go from a total beginner to his debut.
And not just G-pens, he didn't even know about the existence of white-out, so if he made even a little mistake, he'd have to redo that whole page.
Shuujin: .........That's stupid, but incredible.
Page 154:
Saikou: An anime adaptation by 18...
I really can't waste even one second.
Shuujin: Even one second...?
Heeeeew...
Saikou,
Saikou: Hm?
Shuujin: I understand how you feel but I think you should at least study on days before tests.
Saikou: Yeah, I know. I planned to study a little yesterday, but
it was morning before I new it...
SFX: Chun chun
Page: 155:
Saikou: I've been thinking for high school, just North Yakusa would be fine.
Shuujin: North High!!?
Saikou: I know for someone like you who's got the top grades it seems like an idiot school, but it's the lowest level my parents will allow.
The dumber the school the less I'll have to study, and therefore have more time to draw manga.
Shuujin: North Yakusa, huh...........?
But I guess there's nothing I can do if Saikou's made up his mind... He's doing everything for the sake of becoming a mangaka.
But is it really all right for you to go to a different school from Azuki?
Saikou: I don't know where Azuki's going, and it could be an all-girls school.
Shuujin: You could just ask her. And hurry up and get ask for her email address.
Saikou: No, we're going to different high schools,
that way.........
SFX: Kuruh kuruh (turning)
Page 156:
Saikou: It's more romantic.
SFX: KURUN KURUN
Shuujin: There it is. His romantic blood.
SFX: Kuru kuru
Sign: Graduation
Saikou: After the middle school graduation, the next time Azuki and I meet
will be when I'm a mangaka and she's a seiyuu.
Shuujin: ..........And until them you're just gonna encourage each other through emails.......?
Phone: Do your best
Saikou: Yeah.
Shuujin: Whaaaaah? You don't need to copy your uncle that much, do you?
Saikou: I'm not copying him.
This is what I want to do.
And I'm sure it's what Azuki wants, too.
Shuujin: .........
SFX: GORO GORO GORO
Page 157:
Shuujin: Saikou, have you not thought of the possibility that Azuki could go to another high school and end up getting a boyfriend?
SFX: GOROGOROGORO
Saikou: No, I haven't.
I believe Azuki.
Shuujin: .........Why does he believe her so much he won't even talk about it?
Well, up until now I've thought "I'd like those two to get married",
but now for some reason I can believe "Those two will definitely get married."
Saikou: Of course.
SFX: PITAH
Shuujin: So it'll be with both you and Azuki still being virgins?
Saikou: Shuujin, you always say those kinds of embarrassing things with a straight face, don't you?
Shuujin: But that's the ideal scenario, don't you think so, too?
Saikou: Yeah, well, I guess that'd be just fine, wouldn't it?
Shuujin: ...Just fine?
Page 158:
Saikou: Both Azuki and I would be 18 at that time, right?
About 18 seems just fine.
Shuujin (On Page): Ahhahha
Saikou (On Page): Hahhahhaa
But just talking about dreams won't make them a reality.
I'm getting back to drawing practice.
Shuujin: ..........
Haaaaaaah! North High, huuuuuh!?
I'll go to North High, too.
SFX: GATTAAAN
Saikou: HUUUUUH!?
Go to a good high-level school!
It'd be totally weird for you to go to North!
Shuujin: No.
Page 159:
Shuujin: If we're trying to become mangakas together, going to the same high school would be convenient in a lotta ways; it's a shortcut.
I feel the same as you about how we're "short on time".
And also
you gave me this duplicate key, didn't you? That really made me happy.
I've got to at be able to do at least that much for you, too, right?
Though before I decided to do manga with you, I was thinking I'd go to Tokyo University.
Saikou: So he was planning that. [Italics on "was"]
Shuujin: A mangaka that came from Tokyo University, that kinda seems lame, doesn't it? It's kinda like how comedians that come out of Tokyo University are called IQ comedians and get ridiculed if they're not funny.
It's safer to go to a mediocre university for a mangaka, too.
Saikou: We could just hide our educational history.........
Any anyhow, who was it who said that they'd go to a good university as insurance for if they couldn't become a mangaka?
Page 160:
Shuujin: Well if I can't make it then of course I won't be getting my preference.
So we're decided on North High. You'd better not flunk out, Saikou.
Saikou: Flunk out? This is Shit-North we're talking about, Shit-North-----
SFX: HAHAHAHAHAHA
Shuujin: Soooooo,
I thought that for writing original stories, I'd read all the manga here, but...
What do you think? There's gotta be tens of thousands of them.
Saikou: Yeah, even if you don't read all of them, you should read the interesting ones.
Ah, first read "Otoko no Jyouken".
(In Bubble): I'm sure it's around here somewhere.
Shuujin: What's that? Is it interesting?
Saikou: Its original story was written by the best original author in Japan, Kajiwara Ikki-sensei. It was a story that was sort of saying "as a mangaka, be like this."
TL Note: Kajiwara Ikki was the same mangaka who wrote "Ashita no Joe" and "Kyojin no Hoshi". Otoko no Jyouken = Men's Requirements.{I dunno if you need this or not really, but it seems to be helpful in understanding the story.}
Shuujin: That's an incredibly old manga, but being from the 60's, you can't get it now.
Ok, I'll start from there!
Page 161:
Shuujin: This is awesome! The five big requirements for a mangaka and the five big requirements for a man.

Manga / Kawasaki Noboru
Shuujin: First-----You must never draw works of superficial cleverness, turn all of your blood into ink!
Second-----You must never chase after transient flowery popularity, dig up the earth and enrich your roots!
Third-----No matter how much status you gain, you must not hold regrets. In the choice between peace and a storm, choose a storm.
Fourth-----No matter what happens, you must not cry when you lose. Loss should be studied and become the mother that gives birth to success.
Fifth-----Even if you are able to honor these rules above, you must never think you are the only one that is right. Think of everyone else as a teacher!
Shuujin: Today it feels like manga's more stylish and popularity is everything, but
I like it this way.
You said you like manly manga, right?
Saikou: Now that you mention it,
Uncle said had three requirements for his kind of mangaka.
Shuujin: Oh, tell me, too.
Page 162:
Saikou: For a mangaka that's not a genius, there are three things you need.
First is hubris, think you're better than everyone else. [hubris is written huge.]
Shuujin: Ah, I've got that. But then it's not hubris, I have actual talent...
Saikou: That's what hubris is.
The second is effort. [effort written huge]
Shuujin: Ah, so he can be straightforward, too, that Kawaguchi Tarou-sensei.
Saikou: And the last is...
Shuujin: Yuuup.....?
Saikou: Right, luck.
Shuujin: Eh!?
What? So in the end it's all about luck...? {Shuujin says "un" meaning "yes" and the word for "luck" is also "un". If you can think of a better work Shuujin can say that Saikou can mis-hear as "luck", put that in. It's not significant enough to put a note.}
Saikou: Of course. If you're not a genius, you're just gambling after all.
