SFX: DANN...
Rei: Dammit.
Smith: Ooh.
What's wrong, Kiriyama...?
Guy: I've never seen Kiriyama look so frustrated
after a loss before.
Rei: .....
Dammit...
SFX: GOSUH (THUD)
Nikai: He finally... finally
has started to muster up motivation?!
Has he gained a will
to be scorched by the flame of undying passion with me?!
SFX: FURUFURU (Trembling)

Page 27:
Nikai: Kiriyama...
Welcome to the world of best friends!
Rei: Dammiiit!
With just one more win I would've made it to the semi-finals where the match pay doubles!
Shiiit! I'm such an idiot!
Was all that about paying back your debt all talk, Kiriyama Rei?!!
SFX: GIRI GIRI GIRI GIRI GIRI GIRI (Grinding)
Rei: -----If by some chance
she ends up changing schools
or she needs a tutors for when she takes time off school
or she needs to talk to a lawyer, she's going to need money!!
If I want Hina-chan to have somewhere to go ready no matter what happens, then I...
Hey!! Nikaidou! You there?!
Nikai: Yeah! What is it, best friend?!
Rei: I wanna play you. Would you come hang out with me?!
Nikai: Of course!
Best friend!!
Handwritten: Wonderful, isn't it, Nikaidou?!!
SFX: GUHH HARA HARARI (Drip drop) UU

Page 28:
Rei: Is my house okay?!
Nikai: Anywhere's fine!!
As long as we have a board and pieces,
that'll be our battlefield! Kiriyamahhh!!
SFX: ZAHH
Rei: Let's have 10 matches with 30 minutes of available time!!
Don't fall behind, Nikaidouuu!!
There's no way I'm losing in the next Kishou Championship!!
In fact, I'm not losing another match ever!!
Nikai: Oohh, okay, Kiriyama!! You're on!!
Banners; Inside Kiriyama's Head
Inside Nikaidou's Head
Kiriyama's Head: Money (Debt and Shogi in the center)
Nikaidou's Head: Best Friend (Best Friend Big and Shogi in the center)
Rei: I have to be realistic.
I have to.
I can't underestimate the real world.
But still, I can't give up!

Page 29:
Rei: That's how it's always been
and that's how it's going to be going forward, too.
But above all, now
it's for Hina-chan...!!
On Sunday that week
I got an email from Akari-san.
Akarai: Sorry about this, Kiriyama-kun.
You're a lifesaver.
They had all these deals going on to commemorate their recent remodeling...
I mean, they had onions and potatoes for 200 yen a box... How could I not buy them?
Rei: It's no trouble.
This is nothing...
Akari: And there were chicken thighs for 48 yen per 100 grams and margarine for 99 yen a container!
Pork for 126 yen per 100 grams and 99 cent steaks...
Ohhh I'm soooo happy!
Bags: Super Maruei
SFX: FURA FURA... (Wobbling)
Rei: Where's Hina-chan today?
Akari: Ah,
She's with Momo and Ojii-chan.
They went to an amusement park in Asakusa.

Page 30:
Akari: As you'd expect, she's been feeling down
so Ojii-chan took her there.
I hope it cheers her up a bit.
Hey, Kiriyama-kun,
are you okay?
I could carry one for a little.
Rei: I'm fine.
In Bubble: HAA HAAA
Rei: Perfectly fine.
In Bubble: ZEE ZEEE
Akari: Really?
Are you really okay? Don't push yourself too hard.
Rei: I'm okay.
I am
a guy after all...
SFX: FURA FURA (Wobbling)

Page 31:
Akari: Rei-kun, you're looking a little thin, aren't you?
I'm worried. How many kilos are you at right now?
Rei: Huh?
How much do I weight? Um----
52 kilos, I guess.
SFX: PITAH (SURPRISE)
Rei: HUh?
Ah...
Akari-san?
Akari: Um,
hold on
one second...
Handwritten: HUUUH?!
SFX: SUTA SUTA SUTA STUA SUTA SUTA (Stepping)
Akari: Kiriyama-kun,
thank you.
Rei: Okay, I'll
just leave them around there.
Handwritten: Ummm...
Akari: What are you talking about?
Bring them up.
Rei: Uh, but I...
I'm always...
intruding on you guys like this...
Handwritten: And uh..... It kinda looks like you're mad about something...
SFX: ODO ODO... (Hesitant)
Akari: What are you saying?!
Do you want me to do all the prep-work for those heavy vegetables myself?
Help me out!!
Rei: O-
Okay!!

Page 32:
Akari: Okay,
first peel the outer layers off all the onions.
Then remove the fibers from the string beans.
Have you ever done that before?
Rei: I have. It'll be fine.
Akari: ......
I'm really
no good.
SFX: ZAAAAHH
Rei: Huh?
Ojii: You didn' do a dang thing wrong!!
Ya helped a friend!! Hold your head high!!
Akari: Ojii-chan
gave her all that support, but...
SFX: ZAAAAH...

Page 33:
Akari: When it happened
I
just hesitated.
[The lines here are from the last chapter]
I couldn't
offer any support like that.
---Far from it.
I said things like "Why did you do that?"...
"Why didn't you tell me sooner?",
"Why couldn't you have handled it better?"
"Why?"-----...
Rei: .....
Akari-san...

Page 34:
Akari: Ojii-chan told me...
Ojii: I do the same thing.
I end up putting my 'the child from my home' way over 'the child from another home'.
-----That's natural. Everyone does it.
SFX: ZAZAAAAHH
But think about it.
Did Hina do anything wrong?
She didn't, did she?
Hina's suffered enough.
And then on top 'a that
we're saying things like 'Why would you do something like that?'.

Page 35:
Ojii: Hina really lost the place she had, right?
And most of all
even knowing
she might end up being picked on next
she still stayed by her friend's side.
Shouldn't Hina's
bravery
and righteousness
be praised?
Akari: ----Since Mom died
I've taken her place as mother to Hina and Momo.
It happened when I was 19 and there was so much I didn't know.
But
Mom was counting on me.
So I pushed myself as hard as I could.

Page 36:
Akari: I would always tell her these self-aggrandizing things
like 'Make sure you think about what's going on around you'
and
'Be kind to others'.
But when the time came for me to do it,
this is what I do...
Who cares about righteousness,
I wish you'd have just
run away from it...
Hina
gave everything she had
for her friend, but...
I...

Page 37:
Rei: Akari-san,
that's...
That's not right...
It's only natural.
You don't want your family to go through rough things like that.
I mean,
the one that watches over Hina-chan more than anyone else
is you, Akari-san.
-----I've
been cut off from people ever since I was little.
But
no one that's lending a helping hand
wants something utterly horrible like that to happen to them.

Page 38:
Rei: But
that day, even though Hina-chan
said she was scared,
she said she 'didn't regret it' and that she 'wasn't wrong'.
Like she was trying to convince herself of it.
When that happened
I felt like I'd
been helped.
I feel like I
owe Hina-chan...
----So
since you're the one that raised Hina-chan to be such a brave girl
I also
owe you, Akari-san.

Page 39:
Akari: Are you okay
with curry for dinner?
Rei: Yes.
Make sure you make a lot
or I'm sure
I'll go home with an empty stomach...
Guys: We're hooome!
You know what?! Pikatu was there!!
Hina: Ah!
It's Rei-chan.
Momo: And I rode on a panda!!
Ojii: Hey, hold on, Momo! Take your shoes off!
SFX: KORA MUHHAAHH

Page 40:
Ojii: Hm?
What's goin' on, boy? You here today, too?
Ain't you coming here way too much?!
Rei: WAAH! I am, aren't I?!
I'll get going!
Handwritten: WAAAA
Akari (Handwritten): Oh, Ojii-chan!!
SFX: KAAH
Ojii: I'm only kidding, you dummy!
Handwritten: Sheesh
Someone: That's right, Kiriyama-kun.
Go ahead! Eat up!
Rei: I'm sorry.
Someone: Don't apologize!
Ojii (Handwritten): You're making me sound like a bad guy!
Rei: Hm?
SFX: KYUH (Squeeze)
Rei: What's this...?

Page 41:
Hina: I won it at a target game.
I thought it kinda looked like you, Rei-chan...
Though I guess it is
kinda kiddy...
Rei: ......
No, I really like it...
It really
makes me happy!!
Akari: Okay, wash your hands!
Dinner's ready!
Momo: Okaay!

Top Right Small: An article by Senzaki Manabu
Top Right Big: Senzaki Manabu's Lion Shogi Column
Big Right: How Much Income do Shogi Players Earn?! I'm Interested...
Article: At 18 years old, Kiriyama-kun is quite actively playing shogi, isn't he? Shogi players have no restrictions due to age, so even minors earn an income. They would whether they're high schoolers, middle schoolers, and there've never been any before but even if they were elementary schoolers.
The majority of a shogi player's income is of course the pay they receive each time they play a match. If these are preliminary rounds, they can earn anywhere from tens of thousands to hundreds of thousands of yen per match, depending on the contract for the tournament. For example, the Ryuu-ou Championship sponsored by the Yomiuri Newspaper, there is an unusually high amount of pay. It is a shogi player's duty and their instinct to do their best regardless of the match, but there are those that get fired up at the prospect of large payoffs.
The lower branch of shogi players in the Shoureikai is a harsh world where only 4 people can become pros each year, so if you make it through there, you have a guarantee of a certain level of income. I've never looked inside anyone else's wallets so I can't state definitively, I believe around 4-dan the yearly income based just on matches totals around 3 million yen.
But the reason I say specifically from matches is because they also receive income in other ways. Amateurs have jobs teaching other shogi or helping out in shogi classrooms. And kids can get quite excited about shogi, so there's plenty of work in kids shogi classes. Matches are obligatory for shogi players, but they rarely mind if you ask about taking on other jobs. It's a world with a rather open set of rules where you're encouraged to earn money however you want. Some are like me that write manuscripts like this.
Now then, back to the topic of match fees, in most shogi tournaments you'll still earn a fee even if you lose in the first round. However you of course cannot play in the next round.
Also if you keep winning and you managed to snatch the championship crown or win a title, you can earn enormous winnings.
The Shogi association announces a yearly earnings ranking each year, but generally the top is just under 100 million yen. If you put together the high-earning titles of Meijin and Ryuu-ou, it is well over 100 million yen.
In the upper-ranks, there are frequent rank-determining matches with lineups of players at the top of their class. In these matches, on top of the money you get from the matches themselves, there is also a jump in money to be earned from preliminary matches for the rank-deciding tournaments of higher classes.
Being a shogi player is a business with a sole proprietor so you need to be sure to file an income tax return at the end of the fiscal year. It's a world with ups and downs with income, so a player who suddenly had their title taken from them can really suffer from luxury taxes.
Shogi players are self-made business. It's a world where winning is what gets you everywhere. You're striving every day to reach the dream of winning championships and winning top monetary prizes.
