Akari: 'If it really comes down to it,
I'll be counting on you, though!'
Rei: Akari-san's cheeks and voice
lit by the sunset
from then
became burned into my memory.
Page 93:
Rei: ----For the first time, I really desired something.
And it wasn't a pure desire.....
I don't know if that's a good thing or a bad thing.
But.....
Right now
I want to win.
I want to win
no matter what.
Page 94:

Rei: 23 years old. Class C Group 1.
----Of the young players in their 20's, he's probably the one people have the most hopes for.
SFX: CHIH CHIH CHIH (Tongue clicking)
Rei: His forte is fast play and he has an offensive style that's backed by research.
SFX: TAN TAN TAN
Rei: 'Tongue clicking', 'fidgeting', 'fanning himself', he's nicknamed the 'Annoying Prince of the East'.
Black Bar: If you're strong, then everything will go right.
Page 96:
Black Bar: ----But
Someone: The time is now 10 o'clock.
Please begin.

It'll make it harder to concentrate.

SFX: BASHIH
Rei: Fast play, tongue clicking, and fidgeting,

Page 100:
Rei: How can he think it's okay to behave this way?
SFX: CHIH CHICH CHIH TAN TAN TAN TAN
Black Bar: How can he be playing without thinking how the opponent will defend?
SFX: PASHIH
Hachi: 'Like hell he'll make it in time with a move like that.'
'An edge fu? He's using an edge fu against an edge gyoku?'
SFX: TAN CHIH CHIH TAN
Rei: ---The freedom must be nice. Just doing whatever you want without reading too deeply into what's around you.
Hachi: 'This guy's so slow, it pisses me off.'
'As long as I have a ryuu at on this rank, I'll be much faster.'
SFX: TAN TANN TAN TAN...
Rei: ---So noisy.
Yeah, he really is...
I feel like I can hear what's going on in his head
all the way over here...
SFX: SUH...
Page 101:

the world revolves around him.
SFX: PASHIH...
Hachi: H... He's just... throwing his kaku away...?!
Page 102:
HAchi: What the hell?
What the hell is he doing?
I mean, I've gotta take it.
But if I do...
I'll lose my control of the rank.
If I take it, then his edge pieces..
---His edge pieces
are gonna make it in time?!
Page 103:
Hachi: Where'd I go wrong?! I didn't see that kaku drop?!

Guys: KI~~RI~~YA~~~MAAAA
SFX: GOGOGOGO BOSO...... (Whisper)
Rei: Hold on.
In Bubble: HUUUH?!
Yana: You... really did a shoddy job of removing that bee's nest!!
T/N: The first kanji in Hachiya's name means "bee".
Rei: ME?!
Handwritten: Goddammit...
Smith: That damn bee buzzing around!! Think about the people around you a little why don'cha?!!
SFX: GOGOGO GOGOGO
Yana: Who the hell would just start poking the hive with a rod?!
Handwritten: You totally did that on purpose, didn't you?!
First you wrap it in a snack and smoke them out and stuff. There're tons of things you can do, ya know?!
SFX: BUN BUN BUN BUBUN (BUZZ BUZZ)
Rei: Th-This is my fault?!
Smith: That bee is always buzzing!
SFX: KIII
Smith: He's been buzzing since elementary school! It's not gonna get fixed now!
So everyone's already given up on that, get it?!
Yana: All you can do is take him down before he starts buzzing!! Geez!
Page 105:
Yana: Your ability to concentrate goes down as you get older. Be aware of it, will you?!
This is an important game for us!!
Handwritten (Yana): Next term's seed is riding on it
Rei: Huh? Ah...
Okay.
Smith: I really wanna make it past this round, okay?!
In Bubble: Though I lost.
Yana: Don't you know that with age, tournaments are tough right from the start?!
Handwritten (Rei): Suddenly getting attacked and doesn't know what to do.
Yana: ----Honestly, you young people these days.
The bee is way too easy to understand,
but Kiriyama, you're too difficult to understand!!
Handwritten: Every one of these guys is buzzing around...
Smith: You really should
live a life that's easier to understand. Like the bee.
You're pretty similar on the inside after all.
Rei: Please don't compare me to him.
I'm nothing like...
Guys: You're totally similar.
Page 106:
Both: you think 'the world revolves around me', don't you?
Rei: What did
you say?!
SFX: SUTAAANN
Guys: Okaaay, then...
Better get going.
Handwritten: Wewwll, Kiriyama, good luuck.

SFX: GIRI GIRI GIRI (Teeth grinding) GOGOGOGO
Narration: ----'Tongue clicking', 'fidgeting', 'arrogance',
Despite willingly doing all taht, Hachiya Subaru (23) 5-dan may be quite a well-loved character.
KYAAAAAH!!
---And even after that, the bee hung around with Kiriyama.
He stuck around late into the night at a family restaurant for their post-mortem analysis.
And sitting with the world revolving around them
he yelled 'it just doesn't make sense'
1 million times. ☆
Rei: We are NOT similar.
Absolutely not!
SFX: KYUUU TAN TAN MORI MORI MORIRI (Chewing)

Top Right Small: An article by Senzaki Manabu
Top Right Big: Senzaki Manabu's Lion Shogi Column
Big Right: How many matches do they play in a day?! Shogi's Monthly Schedule
Article: I'm often asked the question 'What do pro shogi players do all the time'? Of course, I hold my head up high and say 'play matches'. Then the next question is 'How many matches do they play?' And then I can't say for sure whether they even play one a week......
Yes, generally speaking, shogi players have one match a week or less. If they are having one a week, then they have 50 a year, and that would be a considerably large amount. That would be an extremely active player.
There are many tournament-style shogi competitions, so if you win you keep playing more matches. But in the world of wins and losses, when there are wins there are also losses. And when you lose, of course your number of matches goes down. If you lose all of the shogi competitions currently going on, then you need to start one-time matches (Colloquially known as the 'anyone-can-play matches').
Outside of tournament matches, there are rank-deciding matches. All players outside of meijins and free-class play league matches over the course of the year, and generally they go one match a month. Compared to how things used to be, the overall number of matches per year has gone down. That is because the Daily Gendai sponsored 'All-Star Knockout Competition' was discontinued. This is literally a win-or-be-knocked-out competition so many young vigorous players would get many wins in a row here and would play a whole lot of matches. By the way, this competition had a 50,000 yen bonus for winning, and that was after taxes, so it was popular with young players that didn't have much money. These were the only matches that gave out cash, so when a popular player was playing, his friends would lie in wait to go use it to buy alcohol.
Even if they don't have a lot of matches, the life of a shogi player always feels busy. First one match can take up three days. Fundamentally, you always spend the day before the match relaxing rather than preparing. And even if you do take it easy, with your nerves getting tensed for the next day, you won't have any appetite. And it can be hard to get to sleep that night.
Because many matches can last a long time, they can almost never use the next day. Especially the days after rank-deciding matches with 6 hours of available time. They'll be so exhausted they can barely do anything. In my case, unless I have them at least two days apart, I can't return to daily life.
Due to that and various other reasons, I think of a match as three days of work. And with four matches in one month, that's 21 days' worth..... Huh? Actually that seems like too little. Well, I guess since other jobs don't have the pressure of "losing", that low amount is there to balance things out?
