The verb shinogu seems to mean to outdo, stave off; excel, surpass, and so on... so I can only think that here, the Karasu brother means the Shikoku youkai are trying to cut off the Nura clan's "excelling" and surpassing strength at the "root"? I'm not sure how it works with the "シノギをする" Tamazuki used in ch25, though. I had translated that instance of it as "biding one's time", incorrectly I think now. Maybe it should have been "Because I shall excel in this town too."]]
