一五六七年（永禄十年）織田信長は稲葉山城攻略の後自身の本拠地をこの地に移し地名を『岐阜』と定めた
この地名は信長が帰依していた禅僧・沢彦宗恩によって中国の故事から選ばれたという説がもっとも有力である――――
1567 (year 10 of the Eiroku era): After Oda Nobunaga captured Inabayama Castle, he moved his headquarters to this land, and renamed it "Gifu."
The best known explanation of this name is that of Nobunaga's devoted Zen priest, Takugen Shuuon, that it was chosen from a Chinese tradition.

* Koichirou: Kinoshita Koichirou Hidenaga (1540-1591). Later Chief Councilor Toyotomi Hidenaga. Known for his gentle personality, he was a devoted lieutenant.
