08
-KYAAA!

-It's all right, mademoiselle! It's just a mouse

-What do you mean "it's just a mouse"?! I hate mice more than anything in the world!
box: サータル侯爵令嬢 セリーヌ = The Marquis Saataru's(??) daughter, Celine
(my apologies I don't know french and so have no idea what this name should be)

-sigh...
-That's why I said you didn't have to come! I knew the noble's daughter would be a pain to handle...sheesh
box: リシュリウ親衛隊 第三分隊所属 ロラン = Richelieu's Bodyguard, member of the third squad, Roland

-Did you say something? You're a bodyguard of Cardinal Richelieu, right? You want me to tell him you're incompetent?!
-Please forgive me! (she overheard!)
宰相リシュリウ、 国王ルイ13せいにかわり政治をとりしきる男。現代でいう総理大臣。有能で知られる。
box: Cardinal Richelieu - The man who ran the government in place of King Louis the XIII. In today's terms we call the position Prime Minister. He was known for his brilliant skill.

09
-Let's go already!
-No matter what it takes, I'm going to settle things today, and find out the truth about father!

-Um...mademoiselle Celine, the man we're going to meet--Sir Belmonde--has quite a short temper, so please pay attention to your speech and manners
-HUH!?
-Why does a noble like me have to act like a commoner?!

-I always do as a please!
-Haa...
-I'm going in!

10
-KYAAAA!!

-Mademoiselle Celine!

-Tonight's visitor is quite noisy, I see
-Ah...

11
-What, it's just a mouse
彼がこの地下室の主シィエン・ベルモンドである
box: He is the master of this underground prison, Shien Belmonde
ある記録文書によれば「地下に潜む者らしからぬ気高き男」とある
box: According one historical account, unlike most of those who dwelt underground, this man had high pride in his work //NOT sure of this line

box: His pet cat, Camus (カミュ)

-Geez, just who do you take me for!!

12
-Hey, I'm talking to you!!

-Well, then...let me explain the request!

-IT BURNS!
-What are you doing?! It would be terrible if it hit someone!
-Uh, it DID hit me...

-Hey, Roland, I know I told you I want payment up front

13
-Ah, pardon me!

-Here you are
-And this is?

戦場で37人の敵兵士を倒しその時の感覚が忘れられずに
後にパリで12人の民衆を殺害した殺人鬼
通称49人殺しのエスタフェが使用した凶器です
-It was used to slay 37 enemy soldiers on the battlefield. Then, as if still carrying that sensation,
-was used to slay 12 Parisian citizens in a series of homicides.
-It is a dangerous weapon, nicknamed "The Estafe that slayed 49" //NOT sure, I can't find this name either. Does anyone know this dagger?

-Hou....it slew 49 people?
-It's somehow adorable, being just one person short of 50...

そして柄は木製でやや安っぽいがその分被害者の血のシミがはっきり残っている・・・
-And with this cheap haft made of wood, you can clearly see the blood stains left by the victims...
-Mmm...

14
-SUPE~~RBE!!

-What's with him?!
-Sir Belmonde demands weapons seized from atrocious crimes as payment for accepting requests
-It's something like a hobby to him

-What the heck! That's disgusting!

-IT BURNS!! (again!?)

-I love this dagger.
-I'll accept the request.

15
-What did I tell you about doing that!!
-Well then, I'll go fetch the prisoner

-You don't need to tie me to this chair!
-All right, you can step back now
-Yes, sir

-Mademoiselle Celine, I'm telling you I'm innocent!
-Please, I beg you to believe me!

16
-Hmph!

-Allow me to explain the request.
-The Marquis Saataru, mademoiselle Celine's father, disappeared over half a year ago.

-At the same time one of his servants went missing, along with many precious jewels that were kept in the mansion.
ところがつ3日前にパリにて豪遊する使用人を我ら親衛隊が発見拘束しました
-Moreover, just three days ago we discovered that servant causing a commotion in Paris and was taken into custody by us.
(question: did i translate this correctly, assuming the servant is the same one referred to in the prior line? they do not say "kono shiyounin"...so...?)

その使用人ってのがあいつよ。でも、3日間問いただしても知らぬ存ぜぬの一点張り
-That's this man. Even though we interrogated him for three full days he claimed to know nothing.

-Thus, the request this time is simple:
-We want you to get any information regarding Marquis Saataru's whereabouts out of him.

17
-Hmm.

-Marquis Saataru has always been a gentle man who was concerned about his family.
-Therefore, I can only conclude that he was kidnapped.

-I see...even in your searches you haven't been able to turn up any information...

-So shouldn't you assume that this kidnapped Marquis is very well dead by now?

-Sir Belmonde!! Be more considerate!
-Yes, it's quite likely.

18
-But mother does not feel that way. Even now she insists he's alive.
-And so, she's been using a huge sum of our private property to fund the search for the past half a year
-She'll probably continue to search until the truth is found

-That's why if things are left as they are, the Saataru family will go into bankruptcy
-It's clearly inevitable
-Therefore,

-Make that man clearly state to us whether father is alive or dead--so that my family may continue to survive!

-For the "survival of the family"? Isn't she at all concerned about her father?

-My, you're quite composed...
-Or should I say, cold hearted...

19
-hmph...Someone with as low a social status as you couldn't possibly comprehend the thoughts of a noble!

-Speaking of which, who are you anyway?
-I've heard you're often referred to by another name, "Le Visiteur"
(t/n - 真実を観る者 is what's written next to Visiteur. This kanji means "one who views the truth" - the meaning is coming up in what he does next so just hang on till then.)
-Can you really make that man confess?
-What a stupid question... (also, that's a mute point/question...but i really love having them argue here so...stick it to her, belmonde!)

何人も我が前にて真実を語らざること能わず (gotta love classical japanese :X)
-There isn't a single person who will be able to hide the truth from before me (i trans'd it like this because of the next page)

20
-Come again!?
-...It means it is impossible to keep secrets from Sir Belmonde.

-Yeah, well I already knew what he was saying! (I was just testing you)
-(she's trying to save face...)

-It doesn't matter who or where you ask--
-You'll see I've got nothing to do with this incident!

-Well, you may be right...

-Finally, someone who listens to me! So, then le---

21
-EEEEH!!

-If I ask your body, then the answer will be clear
-Whether or not you've committed a crime, that is
(I flipped this order around)

-If he asks his body!?

-R-Roland!! What's he mean!? He couldn't possibly be going to torture him?!

22
-What, Celine...you mean you didn't find out beforehand?
-This is the last place people are brought who won't fess up to their secrets

-And that I have special permission from Cardinal Richelieu himself!
-What kind of permission?

-"The right to use any means necessary against prisoners"

-S-so you're basically an Inquisitor...?

-An Inquistor...?
-Can't you think of something that sounds better than that?
ahem

-Hold on! I thought Cardinal Richelieu had publicly forbidden torture as an uncivilized act!
-That's certainly the case, but...

23
-Justice just isn't served by only being fair...I'm sure you understand that too
-Naturally, that makes my existence top secret

-If you tell anyone, your head will roll

-If you really want to know about your father's whereabouts then what do you care about the methods I use?
-Y-you're right, but...

というわけで囚人よ、貴様をこれからどうしてくれよう
-...which means you, my friend, will do as I say from here on
(translators, did i get this line right?)

へっ拷問が何だってんだ
-Ha...you're going to torture me?
-You make me laugh!

24
-I don't believe it!! Torture!?!?
-Oh, shit! Shit!!
-What's he going to do? Pry my nails off? Gouge my eyes out?!

-What's wrong? Feeling sick?
sfx - gritting teeth

あの~僕チン痛いの苦手なんで
-Um...I'm not really good with pain, you see
(translators - what is "boku-chin"?! can't be his chin hurts, right?)
-I'll tell you anything you want to know about the missing Marquis' whereabouts!

-HUH!?

25
-But, it includes some things that I'm sure mademoiselle Celine wouldn't want strangers to hear
-So I'll only agree to telling mademoiselle herself!

-Fine.

-Geez, spit it out already!
-ehehe

-This is a really disappointing outcome
-I for one am relieved
-that it didn't come to using those methods while on the grounds of a holy place like this

-Hey, hurry up and talk!

26
-Too bad you didn't search me better, you worthless brat!

-Shit! He was hiding a small knife!!

-KYA!!

27
-DON'T MOVE!
-MOVE AND I'LL CUT HER THROAT!

-damn you!!

-A-aa-ah!!

28
-Sigh...Roland, you really messed up big this time

-By way you suddenly acted, you must be the culprit!

-You're the one who just waltzed over to me! It's your fault you got tricked!
-I'm gonna use you as a hostage to get out of here!

-H-HEY!! DIDN'T I TELL YOU NOT TO MOVE!?

29
-Sir Belmonde!?

-Listen up, you foolish scum

-My job is to get the truth out of you
-Not to protect that girl

-W-what did you say?!

-Sir Belmonde!! Stop this at once!!

-Y-You're bluffing!! There's no way you'd harm a noble!

-Let me tell you something
-When it comes to nobles,

30
-I could care less (t/n - in the two he's saying I hate nobles. But, you can't split that across two bubbles. So I wrote the above. Or, go gansta: I don't give a shit)

31
-Mademoiselle Celine!!
-W-what have you done!?

-I'm sorry Celine...I lost my common sense for a moment there

なにしろ生まれてこの方この修道院の地下から出たことがない
-In any case, ever since he was born this man has never left the cloister's basement even once
(translators, is this correct?)

32
-Belmonde knows neither of his parent's faces. According to written records, his father was an influential noble in his youth. It was 20 years ago...

-Out of all people, he fell in love with one of his slaves!

-"If people learn of this our family name will be ruined!"
-The household's elders were enraged and tore the couple apart

-And then, a rumor surfaced..."That slave is actually a witch"!!
魔女が禍々しき術をもって息子をたぶらかした!
-"Using her fearful arts she will prey on people's sons!"
(translators, help - taburakasu = to trick/cheat, but for what purpose? Is it because witches ate kids or something? Does this line mean she would eat her son? tricking her son doesn't sound meaningful in any way)

-It was the first half of the 17th century that was the prime time for "witch hunts"
-If a rumor surfaced that someone was a witch, no one would doubt it even for a second
-It was not long that the slave was given an unfair trial
-And executed

33
-However, by that time the woman was already pregnant!

-To put the baby to death with her was too cruel, reasoned one friar

-So he raised the child in secret, using the cloister's basement
-That cloister was this very Rivière Saint Michel!

-That child was none other than Shien Belmonde himself!
-It was later that the family's leaders learned of his existance

-They agreed to overlook it on one condition--"He is never to leave the basement in his entire lifetime!"
-They added, "If that rule is broken, we will execute everyone by the fire--including the friars--as witches' accomplices!"

34
-Fast forward 20 years...This is the man who has never been allowed to step outside the basement, even once!!

-fuuuu (sfx blowing air out your mouth??)
-nngh! (well, it could be a kya moment)
-Hey Celine, get a hold of yourself
-You shouldn't feel any pain, right?

-EH!?

-huh?! I-I'm sure I was cut by your sword...!

-W-what about the prisoner!?

35
-W-W-
-WHAT THE HELL IS THIS?!

-Even though he was cut, it's like his body stopped midway from falling apart!

-W-what's going on?!

36
創生の七曜剣 第一の剣 「ランディ」
seven luminary, also means seven days of the week/sword/of creation
-"The Seven Swords of Creation" (Sousei no Shichiyouken), this being the first...
-"LUNDI" (I finally decided on this, it's pretty clear he's talking about the days of the week, so Monday it is)

-What's with that sword? Half is pure white...and the other half's pure black!

魔女の血をひく私がこの剣を使えば思うがままの状態でモノを切る
-When I call on the witch's blood within me, this sword allows me to cut things exactly as I envision it
-I cut his body
-And chose to have it only pass through yours

-Only pass through?

-There's no way anyone could normally do something like that!
-Why do you possess that wicked power!?
-Beats me...
この質問の答えらしきものが記録文書に次ぎの様にしるされている
box: The answer to that question, according to the ancient records, went something like this:

37
その力の源を考察するに我々は一つの結論に行きつかざるをえない
-Belmonde was a man who truly possessed miraculous skills. We tried to investigate the source of that power, but were only able to conclude one thing on the matter
(translators please check the sentence above. I'm not sure, is this supposed to be "we only arrived at once conclusion," or is it "we were unable to arrive at a conclusion"? i don't know -kazaru)
-His mother, or in other words the woman suspected of being a witch who met an unfortunate death--that woman actually came from the line of witches.
記録文書「ベルモンドに関する覚書」より抜粋
(An excerpt from the ancient writings entitled "Memoirs in regards to Belmonde")
[translators, correct?]

-In short, it was believed that Belmonde was a man of unique talents because he was a descendant of the witches' line and inherited their power!

38
-Damnit!! What the hell did you do!?
-Damn you! You piece of shit! You nagashime*! (nagashime is "flirtatious glance" in my dictionary...i don't know how to trans it)

-"nagashime" isn't really an insult... (someone, help out here & explain :))

-What's wrong with being a nagashime??

-Wha-!? (he's a complicated person, isn't he)

-Undo this stupid trick! If you don't, I'll never tell you anything!

-Hmm? Is that what you'd like? ...guess i have no choice
-Let's put you back to normal

39
-F-F--
-YOU JUST WENT AND MADE IT WORSE!
-YOU MOTHER F'N LIAR!
-...is what I want to say that but my voice isn't coming out!!

-huh? you seem pretty upset about something.
-You mean you weren't in this shape to begin with?
-Oops
-I guess I was just a bit off, huh

40
-I-I can't believe someone is able to do this!

-Why am I even still alive?! At this rate, I will die...that's for sure...what should I do!?

-Hm? If I can't hear your voice then there's no way I can make you confess...
-Looks like I went overboard...
-All right, how about a little proposal

-If I were return you to normal, promise me you will speak of everything you know about the Marquis' whereabouts
-Well, how about it?

-I-I G-OT IT!! I P-ROM-ISE!!
-What? Are you trying to say something? I can't quite hear you
-Isn't that your fault in the first place?
-Better not move so much, it looks like your head's going to fall

41
-Okay, then how about this: If you promise to confess and want me to return you to normal,
-Take one step forward
-If you do anything else, I'll take it as meaning you have no desire to cooperate.

-O-OKAY!! B-but how can I be sure my body won't completely fall to pieces?!

-Oh, my...I really can't make out a thing you're saying
-That's your fault!!

-Damnit! I have no choice!
-Just one step!!
-Careful...If I move carefully it'll be fine!

-Okay, Nice and easy.. just one step!
-Nice and easy...!!

42
-Slowly...
-Just...
-One step...

43
-Huh!!?
-Isn't something wrong?!

-You went took a step back...you're trying to get smart with me, huh?
いや・・・悪党にしては見上げた根性とども評価すべきか?
-Hmph...I guess this means I thought too much of a scoundrel like you
(help with this line, please. i'm really confused)

-Y-You've got it all wrong!! I-I was trying to go forward!!

-He hasn't even realized it, has he?
-Indeed
-It seems he is completely unaware

-That his lower body...
-Ever since he was first sliced...

44
-Was turned around!
-W-W-WHAAAAAT!

-Even if I tried to move forward, I would just move back!! You planned this all, didn't you!?
-You took away my voice to force me to do this!
-Bastard!! You never had any intention of returning me to normal!!!

45
-That's right!
-"Its' your fault you got tricked"...isn't that what you said to Celine just a while ago...?
(note to scanlators - he's quoting page 28, so i edited it slightly so that they can make the most sense. if you've already started typesetting you may want to go back and check it.)

-...WHA--!! You've been reading my lips! You know exactly what I've been saying!!

-Huh?
-What?
small - I can't hear you too well

一発ブン殴ってやる!
-YOU SHITHEAD!! I'M GONNA SMASH YOUR FACE IN!!
(translators, what is the literal here? i'm not familiar with ippatsu-bun. Is it one good hit? or a "full" punch? ...)

-Aa~Aa...You shouldn't have tried to move so quickly...

46
あでょソウァ
-GUWAaaah!!! (adeosou?? does anyone know what he was at least trying to say?)

-According to Belmonde, a person's will is weakest when on the verge of losing their consciousness

47
彼は彼なりのやり方でその瞬間を作りこうささやくのだ
-Utilizing his unique methods, he would orchestrate that very moment and whisper to the victim in this way
”我汝の深き黒淵にて偽りなき白瀬を望む”
-"I desire information free of lies from deep within the depths of your darkness"
(t/n: interesting kanji usage. "shirase" is written but the accompanying kanji is shiro (white) and se (current). There is no word like that. But 知らせ means a notice/information, like when you read an flyer for something. I did research, but I'm not turning up anything. I can't help but think it actually does carry an informative meaning, but the kanji implies to readily gush forth like a (white) spring. Kind of makes sense in the contrasting "deep dark abyss" phrase before it. Anyone else have some ideas?)
-Answer me: Where is the Marquis being held?

-A...AH!!
-Even if the victim could not express the answer in words, it made no difference

解錠 ウヴリール (unlock)
-"OUVRIR"!!
-Because Belmonde,

-...by looking deep into his victim's eyes...

48
-Can literally "see" the answer to his question!!

49 (no text yay!)

50
-Hou...
-They've left him alive

-nnn!! (I'm hungry...)

-You mean my father...
-Is still alive?!

-Yes. He was looking rather emaciated, though
-I suppose it was just to allow the prisoner to demand a ransom once he exhausted all of his money

-Roland, I'll draw you a map later
-There is a lookout but it shouldn't be anything that one squad can't handle

-Understood.

51
-As expected of the one called "Le Visiteur"...just how many cases has he been able to solve with that mysterious power of his?
-There's not a doubt that he and the Cardinal have been supporting the stability of this country from the shadows!

-When I put the prisoner's body back together I'm sure he regained consciousness
-Haha...
-It happens every time...each prisoner's heart races thinking they're really going to die

-Whether I kill them or they get capital punishment, it's all the same
-Well, treating them as criminals requires a number of formalities before they can be executed
(cat - by eye - meow, below - feed me!!)

-Hey, Celine
-Eh?! Y-yes!

52
-Good for you. Now that you got the information on your father, you won't have to "waste" any more money
-"so that my family may continue to survive"
-Make that man clearly state to us whether father is alive or dead!

-Sir!! Please stop such disrespectful talk!

-That father is still alive...
-is such a...

-relief

53
-I'm so glad!
-Father...how hard it must have been for you this past six months

-You've been facing your anxiety inside while keeping a strong face all this time...
-what a strong person you are

-Hmph
-She's something else, for a foolish noble
sfx - smack cat - meOW! (/ha!)

-Um...what can I give to you to express my gratitude?
-Is their anything I can do for you in return?
-Don't worry about it. It would be overkill since I've already carried out the job
cat part in order: scratch scratch/Meow!/Food! FOOD!!

-But...
-I can't rest at ease this way!

54
-In that case, I'd be glad to have you join me in bed tonight

-Eh!?
-U-U-Uh...!!
-M-Monsieur Belmonde!! What are you thinking of doing to a noble's daughter!!?

-hahaha
-It's a joke. I have no interest in a kids

-I-I'm already 15!! I'm not a kid!!
-I'm old enough to keep you company at night!
-M-M-Mademoiselle Celine!! Get a hold of yourself! Do you know what you're saying!?

-Monsieur Belmonde...I heard that ever since you were born,
-you've been locked away in this basement

55
-That's just too cruel!
-Don't you want to see the outside world?

-The outside world...?
-To you, the outside world is nothing but Paris, is it not?
-To the many peddlers that traverse the entire country of France, it's just a small world.
-And to the sailors that traverse the ocean, France is just a speck on the map

-What I'm trying to say is that
-To each and every individual, everyone has a different concept of a world that's right for them
-In my case, the world that's big enough for me..

56
-Is right here.

-I was born here, and I shall die here.
-I'm neither inconvenienced, nor discontent

-Is it because he's a decedent the witches? Or is it because he was born and raised here?
-This man's thoughts are always beyond common sense... (that's lit. what he says, if this doesn't make sense, I suppose a better translation is "beyond my comprehension" because common sense is a relative term, right?)

57
-By the way, Roland...you let the prisoner in with a concealed weapon...
-That's a huge fault on your part

-He's right! I nearly died because of you!

-As punishment,
-Using the dagger that you gave to me,
-I'm going to raise its number of victims to 50!

-Eeek! Stop it with these disgusting jokes!
-Hey Celine, hold Roland down
-Okay~

-This is the story of Shien Belmonde, the mysterious man who lurked underground
-Unbeknownst to him...whether he wished for it or not,
-GYAAA!! Please forgive me!!
-His fate was about to drag him out
-into the outside world!

left: The stage is now set for the tale of this inquisitor!
(lit it says "tale of torture, now, the curtain has raised"...tale of torture? i can't think of anything that sounds good like this so i took a liberty here)

次号の拷問はバタバタと倒れる男!
bottom right: The first act/end. Next time's torture involves a man clattering and falling apart! A huge 25 pages!!
(T/N - NO!!! NOT MORE PAGES!! ( ; _ ; )...
on a more serious note, translators help - batabata to taoreru? lit. is clattering noise + falling, but isn't that kind of what happened in this chapter? i really stink with this 擬声語, please help me out!!)

-fin-
AT LAST!!!

Notes, for translators:
Unsolved mysteries
1) Belmonde's first name and the Marquis' name. Any ideas?? edit: one person suggested sartre for the marquis. could shien be Cienne or something?
2) I'd like confirmation on the sword and other french word that appears in the chapter.
3) All the lines of script I typed, if I could get feedback as to whether or not they're correct (particularly page 47)
4) Should I change sir to monsieur? i only started this on the last pages...

merci beaucoup!

I'll check out the rest when you're done^^ here's some few things first :amuse

05
-Rivière san michelle
Probably Rivière Saint Michel

08
box: サータル侯爵令嬢 セリーヌ = The Marquis Saataru's(??) daughter, Celine
I have to confess I have NO IDEA :/ I google’d everything I can, this is one marquis I don’t know and can't find ;_;

box: リシュリウ親衛隊 第三分隊所属 ロラン = Richelieu's Bodyguard, member of the third squad, Rolan
Usual French name is Roland

11
box: His pet cat, Kamyu
I think it’s “Camus” (that’s the same name as the Aquarius Saint in Saint Seiya^^ plus the name of a popular brand of Cognac and a famous writer))

13
通称49人殺しのエスタフェが使用した凶器です
-It is a dangerous weapon, nicknamed "The Estaphe that slayed 49"
Can’t find anything about it either, but considering an “estafilade” is the name of an injury done by a sword-type weapon, an “estafe” would fit

14
-SUPER~~B!!
Supe~rbe!! If you wanna go with the French version :amuse

Keep up the good work :thumbs

Thanks for your translation!

"Marquis de Saataru"? I'd agree with Xophien that its a fictional creation, but as I looked up "SATRE"/"SATREAN", I noticed that his first novel was called "Nausea" and its revolves around the metaphysical diary of historian at work on a monograph dealing with the MARQUIS de Rollebon. LOL...just an interesting association.

As for the question on 魔女が禍々しき術をもって息子をたぶらかした, I got the impression that the witch was out to seduce/trick rich men's sons and bring infamy onto the family? (BTW, I don't think witches ate babies, they just used baby fat to make candles, the guy whom we all know ate babies from mythogy was SATURN (related to Saataru??)

And I wondered if the name was intentionally spelled Shien, like Chien (Dog) ??? :D

Hmm, Could marquis de Saataru? Marquis de Sade, perhaps? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marquis_de_Sade
although he seems somewhat anachronic, but meh, details ^^
edit: Upon further wikipediaing, it seems he's out of place some 200 years, so forgot I said anything ^^'

Just a suggestion for one thing shrimpy. You could always call them the "Seven Swords of the Creation". Most people would understand that you're talking about the biblical Creation I imagine. It's also a bit more clear and standard to call it by the Creation rather than the Creative Days.

I'll try to check through the other ones you included the Japanese text for when I get a chance.

I finally read the scan! Just want to say, your translation for this really make a difference! At least now I know where's the story heading. Thank you so much. ^^

By the way, noticed 2 untranslated bubbles. Maybe you like to consider colouring those problematic sentences in red/blue in your future translations, and this can allow other translators to zoom in on those sentences and help out. :)

Zindryr - yes, your point is quite valid. I'll change it.

Nami - good idea with the color. I can't believe I didn't realize i could actually do that...guess i'm just so focused on bold and italics I forgot.

Which bubbles were untranslated?? No one said anything!! I hope it's just sfx!

EDIT - I d/l and read the scanlation, i can't think of any two but the "fuuu" bubbles, which are nothing but sfx for blowing smoke. How would you spell them in english?

Oh yeah, maybe its that - the sfx. I only remember seeing the kanji in the scans. Smoking - *puff*, *huff*, what other words can we use? *wonders too* Hopefully someone else can come and give suggestions too :amuse
