Long-winded t/n: It’s very difficult to correctly translate the word 意識 because it really means several things sort of mashed into one word. In this context, 意識 refers to a state of having your mind focused and aware of something, and you have some sort of intent to do something with whatever is your object of attention... This means that (for the Puffer Fish Whales) the little critters can sense that Coco is, for some reason, actively attentive to their existence and that he wants to do something to/with them. So when Toriko says Coco’s intents are submerged, the actual connotation is that Coco sort of “empties his mind”, as it were, but yet still manages to remain completely focused and able to perform the tricky task at hand, a truly remarkable feat. Whew, now that I’m done with this, I don’t know if anyone will even read this. If you did, thanks!!
