When you're going through hard times, you always need some sort of perk-me-up. That's easier done than said for Ryoutsu...but that doesn't mean he's not the only one who has problems!
Chp. 2: A Festival and Fuutarou
57.
Ryoutsu: Meguro Asama…………It will be him………No, no! Nasu no Kotobuki downwards has been scratched…s**t.
Ryoutsu: I guess I’ll go through the 3rd frame……
Ryoutsu: GYAA
58.
Ryoutsu: You brats!!
Ryoutsu: Wa
Ryoutsu: That f**king hurts~~
59.
Terai: What’s wrong, Ryou-san? I heard gunfire now.
Ryoutsu: The mischief of the brats around here is getting worse and worse!!
Ryoutsu: Because the policemen beloved by the populace has gotten soft, we’re being mocked by the brats.
Ryoutsu: Damn, they’ve memorized how to use a gun.
Terai: Ryou-san, you’ve already done three apology reports today!!
Ryoutsu: I know that, hmph!!
Ryoutsu: How could…those brats have fired it!?
Terai: What are you doing?
Ryoutsu: I’m wrapping this silver paper, making it look like a bullet head……
Ryoutsu: And cover in red the behind like magic………there, restored!!
Terai: On the outside…
60.
Ryoutsu: It’s good just on the outside…there are still 4 left.
Ryoutsu: While I’m at it………
Ryoutsu: If the brats can think that, then what about all the other groups!?
Terai: There’s a festival at the Katori Shrine. The festival this year is busy.
(TN: Katori Shrine is in reference of one of a style of Shinto shrine, based around the original Katori Shrine in Chiba)
Ryoutsu: A festival…? With goldfish scooping and takoyaki?
(TN: “Goldfish scooping”, or “kingyosukui”, is an event typically seen in festival scenes where people can win a goldfish by scooping it with a small scoop with thin paper that usually tears due to it’s thickness and falling in water)
Terai: Of course.
Ryoutsu: Hey! Can’t we see while on post?
Terai: Yes.
61.
Terai: But wouldn’t it be bad while we’re working?
Ryoutsu: How about telling the boss we’re patrolling the festival?
Ryoutsu: Now, let’s go quickly.
Ryoutsu: Ow, what are you?
Salesman: Owow…
Salesman: He was at my shop without paying his bill…
Ryoutsu: Eating and running!?
Cup: 20 Year Anniversary / Shinagawa Protection Association
62.
Ryoutsu: Were you just eating!? Huh!
“Bum”: Before that, one more tea……
Ryoutsu: Shape up!! A police box isn’t a teahouse!!
Ryoutsu: How could you be so cheerful and smiling to policemen? Huh!?
Terai: Ryou-san!
Terai: He’s Fuutarou the drunk. Don’t be so rough.
Ryoutsu: Got it.
Ryoutsu: Alright! Start from the beginning……talk seriously.
63.
Fuutarou: I’ll tell you the truth in that I’ve been using all of it for a long time on horse racing and alcohol……
Ryoutsu: Horse racing!? You’re ten years too early!
Fuutarou: It was when Ayase Homare was in the race last week…
Ryoutsu: That’s the 9th race. Was it the race Nasu no Kotobuki was in!?
Fuutarou: I thought you’d come around…
Ryoutsu: Did you see who wanted to buy Nasu no Kotobuki!!
Fuutarou: But master, it’s quite serious at the horse track. It was chance that Nasu no Kotobuki came through.
Ryoutsu: What are you saying! That horse is natural for racing looking at its bloodline!
Ryoutsu: Look, its parent is Kyuuri no Kotobuki……its feerless!
Fuutarou: But it was serious at the track……
64.
Ryoutsu: You: how could you defy me, called the winning horse of HQ in my 20 years of horse racing!?
Terai: Ryou-san, the investigation isn’t horses, it’s an eat-and-run. Talk about the eat-and-run!
Ryoutsu: I got it!!
Ryoutsu: So then, speak of what happened…
Fuutarou: COUGH COUGH
Fuutarou: In…truth…the money I thought would get me back to Niigata……I did some horse racing…to at least get a souvenir…
Ryoutsu: So you lost it all and became hungry…so you finally…
Fuutarou: Everyone’s been so bad to me, master! Show pity to my son for having such a drunk, worthless father, kukuku.
65.
Ryoutsu: How much will it take to get back to Niigata…?
Fuutarou: Eh, what’s that?
Ryoutsu: I’m asking how much you need.
Fuutarou: U—h, the train is three thousand yen…
Fuutarou: Ah!
Ryoutsu: Don’t drink or do horse-races anymore.
Ryoutsu: And here’s a bit to buy something with……
Fuutarou: Ma…Master.
Ryoutsu: Go ahead, go ahead………
Fuutarou: I did want to buy a souvenir for my momma but……..
66.
Ryoutsu: OK: when you get back to Niigata, work honestly and don’t make your mother and son worry!
Fuutarou: Hey, well then, I…got it already.
Terai: Ryou-san…
Ryoutsu: ?
Terai: Are you fine giving him money without asking where he lived! He’ll never pay it back!
Ryoutsu: It’s cheap to think that a little money can improve a person. Hahahaha……
Ryoutsu: Police serve to create a bright Japan! Hold on, going to pee.
Ryoutsu: Kuku…so heart breaking…
67.
Ryoutsu: Ah, right: the festival, the festival. Now, let’s go quickly!
Terai: Should we really go!?
Terai: The chief will be coming back from patrol soon.
Ryoutsu: Therefore, we’ll go before he comes.
Ryoutsu: He’s still partway through his inheritance report……………It’ll be fine, don’t worry.
68.
Ryoutsu: Well, a festival like this is like the old days! So nostalgic…
Ryoutsu: Well its cause my birthplace was Yoshiwara. Those Asakusa festivals were good. Where were you born?
(TN: Yoshiwara was a famous red-light district in old Edo/Tokyo known for prostitution, around the modern Taitou ward. Asakusa is also in Taitou, notable for it’s temples and formerly known as a “pleasure” district prior to the rise of more modern districts such as Shinjuku. Thus it makes sense that a citizen of Taitou like Ryoutsu would go to Asakura for their festivals)
Terai: Nosappu in Hokkaido!
(TN: As I mentioned in the pilot, “Nossapu” is the eastern-most point in Japan)
Ryoutsu: Hey, goldfish-scooping! This is my triumph of triumphs at the post.
Ryoutsu: Look closely at this arm forged long ago!!
69.
Ryoutsu: Ah!!
Salesman: One more!!
Ryoutsu: S**t.
Ryoutsu: Damn.
Ryoutsu: What!! (weird symbols)!!
Ryoutsu: Hey, the goldfish of your place is making a fool of a cop.
Ryoutsu: Hey, listen, the goldfish at that shop are extremely strange. I’m not mistaken, they’re tamed!
Terai: Sure, sure.
70.
Ryoutsu: Ah~~shooting gallery. I love those.
Terai: You’ve gotten pleasant.
Sign: FUN TARGET CORNER (FAMED IN KAMEARI!!)
Ryoutsu: My gunmanship is my triumph of triumphs! Wherever I go, I’m better for going after live humans over dolls…
Ryoutsu: This hand’s been forged in the police academy……
(TN: Note Tetsujin 28 (Gigantor) and Tetsuwan Atomu (Astro Boy))
Ryoutsu: S**t, I missed……
71.
Ryoutsu: S**t.
Ryoutsu: Isn’t this barrel defective?
Ryoutsu: Damn f**king brats are making fun of me!
Terai: You’ve quickly gotten serious.
Ryoutsu: Quiet! Why should a modern policeman lose to a civilian?
(TN: Note Kitaro)
72.
Ryoutsu: Unu.
Ryoutsu: Mu.
Girl: I got it. It’s so simple, an idiot can do this.
Ryoutsu: Hey! Hold my jacket.
Terai: Ryou-san, calm down.
Ryoutsu: Shut up!
Ryoutsu: I will hit this! S**t.
Terai: Well, I’m not staying with you anymore.
Terai: Well, that’s fine. I’ll go back there alone…
SFX: BANG
73.
Ryoutsu: I did it, hahaha, look Terai! I finally hit it! Look at that.
Ryoutsu: It really is the gun you use…N, what’s wrong!? Don’t joke with me~~
Terai: You really weren’t letting it go.
Terai: Well, let’s go back already. We’ve done enough.
Ryoutsu: What, we’re going already?
Terai: We’re with him again tonight…
Ryoutsu: Really? So then……
74.
Terai: Of…course, let’s go play a bit more.
Ryoutsu: Wh…what?
Ryoutsu: But it’s great you want to come with me again. Our fun will go up…
Fuutarou: WAHAHA…WAAA…
Fuutarou: Hahaha, everyone~~drink up. I’ve got money. Hahaha.
Terai: Ryou-san, it’s another one. It’s different from that guy earlier! Well, let’s go get some candied apricot!
(TN: “Candied apricot” or “anzuame” is a traditional festival snack)
75.
Ryoutsu: Th…th…th~~at guy~~~!!
Terai: Then I’ll be waiting over there…
Terai: I won’t get involved anymore. I don’t know them…
Ryoutsu: Hohohohow dare………he…he.
Fuutarou: Ah, come, come, hahaha.
Fuutarou: N?
76.
Fuutarou: The cop from earlier? This is chance~~how about a fill up?
Ryoutsu: Fill it up with what!!
Fuutarou: What’s with the police! You wanna fight?
Ryoutsu: SHUT UP!!
Ryoutsu: How dare you lie to me! You idiot!!
Bums: Ah! Their my buddies. What are you doing, our servant!
Terai: I don’t know him at all.
77.
Ryoutsu: If that Fuutarou comes by this time, I’ll kill him!
Ryoutsu: Owow…
Terai: You did too much, you didn’t even think that they could have been murderers.
Ryoutsu: I was troubled with that money…s**t, I really should have used it for pachinko…
Ryoutsu: Ah.
Fuutarou: How was last night, hihihi…
Ryoutsu: Going to fight me!!
Fuutarou: W…wait up.
Fuutarou: I’ve come to pay back your money, pay it back!
78.
Ryoutsu: Ri…right. I really did believe you when I looked into your eyes at my post.
Fuutarou: He changed to delight.
Ryoutsu: Hey, what’s this? Isn’t this a manjuu?
(TN: Manjuu is a sweet pastry usually with a paste or jelly inside)
Fuutarou: The cost was outrageous. Look closely, it’s upside-down.
Fuutarou: An upside-down manjuu is a hundred-thousand……a hundred-thousand is a lot. Hihihihihihi…that’s strange huh.
(TN: This is a bizarre pun: the reverse of “manjuu” is “juuman” or “one-hundred thousand”)
Ryoutsu: Hold it, don’t move from there…
Fuutarou: Huh, why?
Fuutarou: Whwh…wait. Are you serious?
Ryoutsu: Hold on! Quiet as I shoot!
Fuutarou: He didn’t get the joke~~
TN: Manjuu...juuman...yeah, that would be a hard joke to do in our language. (unless it somehow turns into, I dunno..."doughnut" and "nuts of dough"...but that just sounds wrong) Strangely, even though this is the second actual chapter, the world just seems to feel more familiar and things just seem funnier and more interesting the more you get yourself into it. Maybe it's just either the time of the era being 1976, which was a much more simpler time in manga...or it's just the familiarity that Akimoto gives to his world and those in it with each chapter. This chapter shows many different sides to Ryoutsu, from his selfless side to his selfish side, from happy-go-lucky to easily aggrevated...and each side just brings out a different interesting and fun aspect as needed in these chapters. This is also the first active usage of Terai after being introduced last time and sleeping through most of that first official chapter (and being sick throughout the pilot), but he just seemed a bit less memorable compared to Nakagawa or Tokatsu: he just seems like a cautious stick in the mud who sort of is an opposite to the crazy antics of Ryoutsu. Though one thing I find fun and interesting about this chapter...is how many jokes or connections to the pilot that it held out, from Fuutarou's resemblance to the visitor from Niigata to the return of the Nossapu joke with Terai. Though...I sort of hope after this that Ryou doesn't throw his money around like "that" anymore...even if he could in other ways.
BTW: I sort of hope we got everything straightened out about order and such: this is the official chp. 2, the previous was 1 and the one before that is the "prelude" one-shot. (I'm calling it a prelude instead of a pilot right now since for some reason Keiichi's appearance coming up soon may connect to his appearance and usage in the pilot)
