This is the first chapter of volume 22. Since Viz is about to release volume 21, it seemed fitting to start with 22. Feel free to use these translations in your scanlations, just give me some credit for translating, perhaps a link to Bakafish at bakakage.net in the credits page if you have one, and let me know when you use them.

Other than that, enjoy.

Volume Odds and Ends

Inside Panel
斬撃凄まじく、宿敵・吉岡清十郎を倒した武蔵。その報せは吉岡一門を大きく揺さぶる。京が俄に、殺気立っていく。その渦中の武蔵は、不思議な静けさの中にあった。
Musashi defeated his old enemy Yoshioka Seijuro in a terribly fierce battle. The news of which shook the Yoshioka family to its core. The capital suddenly became more and more frenzied. And in the midst of that maelstrom, Musashi was strangely quiet.

1It's either "He's... Smiling." or "Don't make me laugh." Could probably use some help on that one.
2Could use work, not entirely sure of the meaning.

There you go fellas. Enjoy.

For number 2, maybe something more along the lines of:

"What grazed his face was the weight of the burdens he shouldered..."

I don't really read Vagabond though so I'd have to see the raw to take a better guess.

Hopefully that helps a bit though!

Ooh, this is a good chapter.

"The capitol suddenly became more and more frenzied. " Capitol?

"And in the midst of that maelstrom, Musashi was strangely quite." I think you meant "quiet". Minor typo.

What is "tachi"? Haven't seen this anywhere used before. Strike of the sword, maybe?

"That, is the Yoshioka. (alt. "That is the way of the Yoshioka", or "That is the Yoshioka style.")" - I've seen the third version used before in a previous chapter.

By the way, I hope you don't mind my observations. I don't know any Japanese, but if these type of observations are useful to you, I will continue. If not, just tell me. I don't want to upset our only source of translations. :)

A tachi is a sword. It's generally longer than a katana. And don't worry, translation suggestions from people who don't know Japanese, but are big fans of the English versions, are sometimes the best. They help keep consistency. Does it talk anywhere about a long sword being what the Yoshioka use?

Capital (I typo'ed, should be capital, not capitol), Kyoto. Do they mention Kyoto anywhere? It's kind of like if we were to say the capital here in America, most people would assume Washington, D.C. They don't ever say the full name, they always just say the kyo part which means capital.

And yeah, quiet. Bah, damn typoes.

Pocket, that might be better. I'll look at the phrase some more, thanks for the suggestion.

No. But there's a mention of the fact that the style of the Yoshioka school consists of putting your all behind one strike of the sword or something to that effect. I'll look up the original quote, if you want. Also, since this is volume 22, there might be mentions of a long sword in volume 21, where's there's the first part of this fight.

Yoshioka school is in Kyoto. So yeah, it's all good.

It sounds like they didn't translate the fact that a tachi is a long sword and just left it as sword. That sounds like pretty much the same exact line, if possible think you could get me both the Viz and Japanese versions of that page?

Here is the Viz version in volume 17, chapter 154:

The Japanese raw is a bit more problematic. The #lurk people have it, but I have a firewalled network and it's hard getting stuff of IRC. Took me about three weeks to download volume 21 and 22. NeoSchweaty might be able to get it faster. I'll see what I can do about it.

Alright, I decided to go with that since it's just going to be for consistency's sake. Unless the Japanese RAWs for those pages pop up and show me otherwise, that's what we'll have the translation as.

Also, is that really the Viz release? It just looks... Not that great quality wise.

Well, it's a Manga Sketchbook scan, and to my knowledge they scanned the Viz releases. There's no kanji in the whole chapter to be seen. Here's the whole chapter if you want to check it out http://www.sendspace.com/file/t3gppf

Anyhow, I've got my hands on the Japanese raws of 202 up to 205. They're in the raws/releases thread in the Vagabond subforum. ;)

I was talking mostly about the translation and the typesetting.

Of course, I tend to have ridiculously high standards at times.

you should send an angry letter to viz about that. They are actually getting paid to do this.[br]Posted on: June 21, 2006, 09:16:28 AM_________________________________________________the chapter ends when that grey page shows up. Could you adjust your translations accordingly? it just makes my job easier.

It's not like it's that hard to switch, I only did that to this chapter translation. One moment and I'll move it over.

I know the reason behind this.

In Japanese different size swords have different names. The tachi is not necessarily a LONG sword. It is the regular sword they use. During these times the Wakizashi(the short sword) was actually referred as normal sword and long sword. A oversized sword like the one Kojiro had in his infancy probably has a different name.

Translating tachi as just plain sword is a good call considering the times. Translating it as Long Sword is more precise and accurate but can be confusing to people that don't know much of japanese language or history.
