非行化： トラブル発生、操縦不能！　正体不明の。。。
Pilot: There’s been an incident and we’re in trouble! An unidentified-


非行化： ナンバー２エンジンぶっ、分解。。。 分解！！
Pilot: The number 2 engine is d-disintegrating! It’s coming apart !

檜山： 勇。。。　ごめんな。。。　パパ、帰れそうもない。。。
Hiyama: Yuu…I’m sorry. It looks like Papa isn’t coming home this time…


勇： パパ！　仕事忙しくて、わたしのカオなんて、
おぼえてないんでしょ、はい、写真もってって。
Yuu: Papa! Since you’re so busy with work, I don’t want you to forget my face.
So, take this picture of me.

檜山： 負けるものか、この。。。

Tora: Uwaa!


とら： せまいトコにまあ、いっぱい人間どもがねー。
Tora: So many people in such a small space...

潮： 前みたいにめんどーおこすんじゃねーぞ、とら。
Ushio: Don’t make any trouble by materializing, Tora.


とら： そんなコトいって、おまえもここ、
よくしらねえんじゃないのかー？
Tora: You talk big but you don’t really know anything about this place, do you?

潮： 立ち席でもいいからきっぷこども一枚ね
Ushio: I’ll take one standing-room-only kid’s ticket.

女： あのね　立ち席はないのよ
Woman: Um, there’s no standing room.

潮： ひっ、飛行機乗るのはじめてなんだよっ！
Ushio: Th-this is my first time on a plane!

とら： ひっひっひ。。。
Tora: Hi hi hi…

女： そっそこはちがいます
Woman: N-no, not here!

（箱：　とらはフツー人にはみえない。）
(Box: Tora cannot be seen by normal people.)

潮： うるせーや。
Ushio: Shut up!

（箱： ことほどさように、中学生・潮と妖怪・とらは、
旅にでることとあいなったよ。）
(Box: And so, it came to pass that Ushio, a middle school student, and Tora, a youkai, started out on a journey.)

（箱： 旅することが、今まで死んだときかされていた母の秘密をしる
たったひとつの道と、父、紫暮にきかされたからだ。）
(Box: Ushio was told by his father, Shigure, that there was but one way to learn the secret of his mother. Until recently, he had always heard she had died.

（箱： その潮のもつー妖怪を討つためにのみ存在する
「獣の槍」を追って。。。
また、とらを殺すために、父の宗門の法力層も動きはじめた。）
(Box: Now, the hourikisou of his father’s sect are on the move.
Their goal is to chase after what Ushio holds- the Beast Spear,
which exists solely to fight youkai, and to kill Tora.

（箱： さてー）
(Box: Well, now…)


（箱： うしおが目ざすは、北海道旭川の叔父さんのうち。
いく路は空路、陸路、海路。。。）
(Box: Ushio’s goal is his uncle’s place in Hokkaidou.
There are routes by air, by land, or by sea.)

都市名前： 旭川 東京
City Names: Asahikawa Tokyo

（箱： うしおは、どうやら空路を選んだようだが。。。どうだろう？）
(Box: It looks like he opted for the air route but what will come of it?)

（箱： うしとらの名が示すように、古来からその方角は鬼門。。。）
(Box: Just like in their name, Northeast* has been an unlucky direction since ancient times.

*The word for northeast (ushitora) is the same as the shortened form of the manga’s title(Ushitora)!


（箱： うしおにゃかわいそうだが、無事にすむわけはないよなあ。）
(Box: Poor Ushio, this means there’s no way this’ll end well.)

潮： これで「獣の槍」は、しばらくオレからはなれるから、
オレを食ういいチャンスだと思ってんだろ？
Ushio: Now I bet you’re thinking that I’ll be separated from the Beast Spear for a bit
And this’ll be a good chance to eat me.

とら： うわーっ！！　なんだ、こいつーっ！？
Tora: Uwa-! What’s that thing!?

とら： でけーなーっ！　ぴかぴかしやがってよーっ！！
Tora: It’s huge! And shiny!


とら： な、うしお、すげーぞ！！ちょっとみてくるわ！
Tora: Ushio, it’s amazing! I’m going to take a closer look!

潮： あ、おい！
Ushio: Ah, wait!

（サイン： 外 内）
(Signs: Outside Inside)

潮： このハシャギようじや、オレが槍もってないなんて、
気づきもせんな。。。
Ushio: If he’s gonna be like this the whole time, I don’t think I have
to be too careful without the Spear.

潮： おまえは、木や土以外のおまえのしらない物は、
通りぬけられないんだろーが！
プラスチックや鉄、コンクリ。。。ガラスもだっ！！
Ushio: There’s a lot of stuff besides trees and dirt nowadays
that you can’t just pass though.
There’s plastic and iron, concrete… and glass!

男： いやだなあ。これから乗るのに、このニュース
Man: I don’t think I want to fly after this broadcast…


女： 本当に、こわいわねえ。
Onna: Really. It’s frightening.


ニュース： EAL五二四便の事故から一か月たった今も、
遺族の悲しみは消えませんー
今日は、現在も調査中の謎の墜落原因をさぐってみます。
News: It’s only been one month since EAL Flight 524’s accident
But the grief of the bereaved families has not disappeared.
Today, the search is ongoing for the mysterious origins of the crash.

ニュース： この事故は、九月羽田発札幌行きEAL五二四便が
北海道積丹半島に墜落したもので、二百人の死者をだしました。
News: 200 people died in the accident when Flight EAL 528 from Haneda
to Sapporo crashed on the Shakotan Peninsula in September.

航路の逸脱など、原因は今もって不明ですがー
News: Even with the transmission sent just before the crash,
due to abnormalities in the voice recorder and the deviation
from its course, the cause is still unknown.


ニュース： 五二四便の至近距離を飛行していたF-15に搭乗の
厚沢二尉になんらかの責任があるとみて、
News: It looks as though some responsibility falls on Lt. Atsuzawa,
who was flying the F-15 that came within point-blank range of
Flight 524.

厚沢： このために無理をいって、許可をもらったんだー
せめて勇ちゃん、北海道のおじいさんの所まで送らせてくるよ！
Atsuzawa: Because of this, I was told it was impossible, but I’ve gotten permission to at least take you to your grandfather’s place in Hokkaidou.

勇： 父さんを殺した人に、送ってもらいたくないわ。。。
Yuu: I don’t want to be taken there by the person who killed my father!


厚沢： 勇ちゃん、ちがうんだよ。。。
Atsuzawa: Yuu-chan, that’s not what happened…


勇： そうなんでしょ！　　おじさんの乗ったジェット機が、
パパの旅客機に近づすぎて。。。
Yuu: Yes it is!
Your jet got too close to Papa’s passenger plane…

勇： パパのヒコーキがおちたんでしょ！
みんないってるわよ！！
Yuu: And his plane crashed!
Everyone says so!


潮： おとなしくしてろってよ！
Ushio: Just sit still!

勇： いくら、身よりがなくなったからって、
おじさんに送ってもらいたくないわ！！
Yuu: Even with no other relatives to do it,
I don’t want YOU to be the one to take me!

厚沢： 頼むよ。。。勇ちゃんを送ってくコトが、
おじさんができるせめてものパパへのはなむけなんだよ。。。
Atsuzawa: Please… Taking you there is all I can do as your papa’s parting gift.

Yuu: Don’t talk about Papa!


勇： だったらなんで。。。？
Yuu: But why?


檜山： ははは。。。勇!　
こいつはな、空自の頃からのワルい後輩でな。

Hiyama: Ha ha ha! Yuu! This guy was a terrible junior in the ASDF*.

*ASDF: Air Self-Defense Force

檜山： わしとちがって　まだ、後輩をイジめ足りないって、
戦闘機乗りをやってるんだ。
Hiyama: Very different from me. He didn’t bully his juniors enough
so he ended up flying a fighter plane.

厚沢： まいったなあ、檜山さん、ははは。。。
勇ちゃん、パパは、おじさんをいじめ過ぎて、
飽きちゃったんだよ。
Atsusawa: I give up, Hiyama-san. Ha ha ha…
Yuu-chan, your Papa was too mean to me.
I got tired of it.


葬式人々： 原因は、自衛隊のジェット戦闘機との、ニアミスらしいぞ。。。
Funeral People: It was caused by a near miss with a JSDF fighter jet…

葬式人々： 檜山さんも、勇ちゃん一人残して無念だろうに。。。
Funeral People: It’s terrible that Hiyama left Yuu-chan all alone…

葬式人々： 乗ってたのは、勇ちゃんの父さんと親しかったヤツだってよ！
航空自衛隊時代の部下だって。。。
Funeral People: The pilot was a close friend of Yuu-chan’s father!
He was Hiyama’s subordinate when they were in the ASDF .

葬式人々： 勇ちゃん、かわいそうに。。。
Funeral People: Poor Yuu-chan…

Yuu: What!

厚沢： 勇ちゃんにだけは、話しておきたい！
Atsuzawa: I want to tell this only to you!


厚沢： 北海道のおじいちゃんの所へ行く前に、
自分の話をきいてほしい！　おねがいだ！！
Atsuzawa: Before I take you to your grandfather’s place in Hokkaidou
I want you to listen to my side of the story! Please!

厚沢： お父さんが、どうして亡くなったか、
本当の理由をしってほしい！！
Atsuzawa: I want you to know the real reason your father died!

潮： うるさいなあ。
Ushio: Noisy people.

勇： それはおじさんが。。。
Yuu: This is your…


厚沢： 確かに、自分の乗った機と、
パパの機はニアミスの状態だった。
Atsuzawa: They’re right. My plane was in a near miss
with your Papa’s plane.

厚沢： だけど、パパが墜落したのは、パパのせいじゃない。。。
Atsuzawa: But the crash wasn’t your father’s fault…


厚沢： おじさんのせいでもない。。。
Atsuzawa: It wasn’t my fault either…


厚沢： 信じてもらえないことは、わかっている。。。
でも、本当なんだ。。。　あれは、
Atsuzawa: I understand if you can’t believe this, but it’s the truth.

Atsuzawa: A bakemono.

厚沢： ミサワ・コントロール。こちら、
シルバーマウンテン、二機の国箱不明機は、
警告通信後針路を変更、日本海を北上し、レーダーより消えた。
Atsuzawa: Misawa Control, come in. This is Silver Mountain.
The two bogeys changed their course to the one ordered.
They headed north over the Sea of Japan and have disappeared from the radar.

コントロール： ラジャ、確認した。シルバーマウンテン、
帰投せよ。
Control: Roger, that’s confirmed. Silver Mountain, return to base.

厚沢： ラジャ。
Atsuzawa: Roger.

（箱： あの日、おじさんは仕事を終えて帰ろうとしていた。。。
晴天で、計器も異常なし。。。）
(Box: That day, my work was done and I was heading home…
The weather was clear. There were no problems on the gauges…


（箱： その時、前方の空に、なにかをみたような気がした。）
(Box: Then, in the air in front of me, I thought I saw something.


厚沢： ゴールドマウンテン、進路上に、なにかみえたか？
Atsuzawa: Gold Mountain, do you see something in our path?

他人： いや、シルバーマウンテン、なにも？　
レーダーにも、なにも映ってない。
Other Guy: No, Silver Mountain, nothing.
There’s nothing on the radar.


厚沢： まて！
Atsuzawa: Wait!

（箱： 突然、空の一点がゆがんだようにみえた。）
(Box: Suddenly, a point in the sky looked as though it were bending.)

（箱： そのゆがんだ部分は、なにかを含んだまま、
すごいスピードで近づいてきた。）
(Box: It looked like there was something inside the warped space
and it was coming toward us at an incredible speed.


（箱： レーダーにも映らなかったが。。。）
(Box: It didn’t even show up on the radar.)


（箱： それはー）
(Box: It was-)

Atsuzawa: Uwaaaaa!


厚沢： 檜山さん！
Atsuzawa: Hiyama-san!


（箱： 秒速一六００ｍにもなろうというスピードの中で、
自分は確かにパパをみた。）

I definitely saw your Papa.)


厚沢： なっ！！
Atsuzawa: Wha-!


（箱： そして。。。ヤツも。。。）
(Box: Then I saw it…)


厚沢： なんだ、あれは！？
Atsuzawa: What is THAT!?

Atsuzawa: Until now, I didn’t believe it…

Speaker: Po-n This is a public announcement


厚沢： だが、それはいた！　　
機体に体をまきつけて、溶かしているようだった。。。
Atsuzawa: But, it was there!
Wrapped around the body of the plane, like it was melting into it…


厚沢： そして、おとうさんは。。。
Atsuzawa: And then, your father…


厚沢： 檜山さん！
Atsuzawa: Hiyama-san!


勇： やめてーっ！
Yuu: Stop it!


勇： もういいわ、もうたくさん！バカにして！！
そんなオバケのハナシを、信じられると思ってるの！！
大キライ！　キライよ、おじさん！！
Yuu: That’s enough! More than enough! You’re making fun of me!
You think I’d believe these ghost stories? I hate you! I HATE you!

厚沢： 勇ちゃん。。。本当なんだよ。。。
Atsuzawa: Yuu-chan… It’s the truth…


潮： 妖怪だよ！　妖の話だよ！！　うわー
Ushio: A youkai! He’s talking about a youkai! Uwa-

いっ、今のハナシの妖怪は、
なんて名のヤツだ、どんなのだよっ？
Ushio: H-hey, Tora, a youkai!
Do you know the name or what kind of youkai
they’re talking about?

潮： おいっ おいっ
Ushio: Oi oi


とら： おおっ　ムカデだっ　　あーれにのってみてーなー
Tora: Ooh, a centipede! I wanna try riding THAT!


とら： イデデデ
Tora: Ow ow ow

とら： わかった、わかったよ！
Tora: Okay, OKAY!


とら： 「衾」だろ。
Tora: It’s probably “Fusuma”.


潮： ふすま？
Ushio: Fusuma?


とら： ああ。。。空にいて、たまーに地上にきて、
人間をごそっと食ってくな！きっと、ヤツだろ。
Tora: Yeah. It lives in the sky, rarely coming down to the earth
to eat people. Sure, that’s the one.


とら： でも、わしは、やらんよ！
Tora: I’m not fighting it!

潮： およー、めずらしいコトもあるんだな。
Ushio: Oyo~, that’s unusual.


とら： 前に、ヤツとはやりあったコトあるんだけどよ。。。
めんどくせーんだ。
Tora: I messed with it before but it was a real nuisance.

とら： ヤツは、切っても、雷でも、だめなんだよ。
うっとうしいんだ。
Tora: Cutting and lightning don’t work on it.
It’s depressing.

どうしたらいいんだろう？
Ushio: Hmm, we can’t just let this go,
but what should we do about it now?

勇： うそつきなにがバケモノよ
そんなのいるわけないもん
Yuu: Liar! What bakemono!?
There’s no such thing!


とら： ほっとけよ　　いままで何度もイタい目にあったろーが
Tora: Forget it We’ve already had our share of trouble

とら： ふん
Tora: Hmph.

潮： でもそこはそれオレの性分なんだよ
Ushio: It’s in my nature to do something.


厚沢： 勇ちゃん、頼むよ　北海道まで送らせてくれよ。。。
Atsuzawa: Yuu-chan, please! Let me take you to Hokkaidou.


勇： 絶対、いやよっ！！
Yuu: Absolutely not!


勇： いやっ！！

ニュース： それにしても、疑問が残るのは、レコーダーです。
なぜ機長は、こんなことをいったのでしょうか？
第三者でもいるのでしょうか？
News: At any rate, the question of the recorder remains.
What was the pilot talking about? Was there an intruder in the cockpit?


ニュース： 意味不明の部分を読み上げてみましょう。
