Translation Notes

Nakama
One of the most important words in One Piece. Literally it means friend, or companion, and is used to signify crew mates as well. Everyone on Luffy's crew is Luffy's nakama. The actual meaning of the word is not truly one-to-one with any English equivalent, as it has many endearing connotations. Nakama are precious to one another is one of One Piece's primary underlying themes. Therefore, this word will be left untranslated.

Tenpo
This is the suffix to most of Nami's attacks with her Clima Tact. You may have seen it translated as "tempo" before, but that is incorrect. Tenpo is actually a word play using Japanese. "Ten" is a prefix that means natural, and is a prefix that is attached to pretty much every word related to weather. "Kenpo" is a Japanese word for martial arts, and thus when you put the two together it can be roughly translated as "Weather Arts".

Hour
Another pun is slipped into the word “hour”. Recall that Kalifa’s Devil Fruit is called the “Awa Awa no Mi”, and awa is the Japanese word for “bubble” or “foam”. Oda-sensei also had the bright idea that awa sounds a lot like the English word “hour”, and thus Kalifa’s attack is called Golden Hour and Relax Hour.

DON!!
This is Oda-sensei’s favorite dramatic sound effect. It is used in manga panels themselves to give them a bang when a character says something cool or there is a cool scene. As such, this sound effect will always be left untranslated to preserve the natural artistry and meaning of the DON. For maximum enjoyment of One Piece, pay close attention to DON frames.

DODON!!
Same as DON, but a bit stronger.

byu
Sound effect to indicate a fast moving projectile.

shururu
Sound effect to indicate snaking movement. On page 13 it's there to indicate that Kalifa's arm is getting all snake-like and wavy.
