This chapter was epic and amazing for so many reasons, probably my favourite so far... but I feel pretty guilty because Kirimi had so much work to do when she got my translation, and as if that wasn't enough, she was ill too ._. So give huge thanks to her endurance... and tolerance :x

Box: Umewakamaru was born into a family of court nobles. When he was five years old, his father passed away.
その菩提を弔うために七歳で比叡山のある寺に入った
Box: At the age of seven, he went into service at a temple on Mount Hiei to pray for the salvation of his father's soul.

母とはここで今生の別れとなった
Box: That was to be his final farewell with his mother.
梅若丸
Mother: Umewakamaru
あなたは頭のいい子．．．きっと立派な人間になるのですよ
Mother: You're a clever boy... I'm sure you'll grow up to be a fine person.

Ume: Please take care of yourself too, Mother.

頑張っていたらいずれまた会える．．．
Box: If he did his best, they would one day meet again...

Box: Before long, he distinguished himself and quickly surpassed his seniors at the temple.
十歳のころには比叡山中にその才が知れ渡る存在となった
Box: By the time he was ten years old, his aptitude had become well-known on Mount Hiei.

が　それは同時に同僚たちの妬みを生む
Box: However, at the same time, it formed the seed of jealousy among his fellow students.

十二のときまでに彼は三度目にケガを負った
By the time he was twelve, his eye had been injured three times.

どこからともなく飛んできた石つぶてが
Box: The stones which came flying at him out of nowhere
ここに居場所がないことを教えてくれた
Box: Taught him that he did not belong here.

母に会いたい―
Box: He missed his mother –
自分を理解して無償で愛してくれるのは母だけ
Box: His mother was the only one who understood him and loved him unconditionally.
彼は寺を抜け出した
Box: He snuck out of the temple.

Girl: Ahhh, thank goodness... We've finally found you.
普段なら．．．だまされることはなかったろう
Box: Normally... he probably wouldn't have been tricked by them.

しかしその時は違った
Box: However, this time was different.

Ume: Mother is... ill, you say?

Box: Could only... cower in fear.

死にたくない．．．母様．．．会うまでは！
Ume: I don't want to die... before I see Mother!
生きなきゃ！！
Ume: I have to survive!!

Gyuuki: Fool... Is THIS your mother?!

Box: The boy who took the path of evil tore the demon's guts apart.
妖怪・牛鬼は母の死骸を抱えながら生まれた
Box: The youkai Gyuuki was born as he held his mother's corpse in his arms.

Youkai: Eh?
な．．．．．．
Gyuuki: Wha...

Girls: Hiiie...

The boy began attacking humans.

菩提を弔うために死体をつみあげた
He piled up corpses as an offering for the salvation of his mother's soul.

山に住まう妖怪どもをひきつれ――
Box: He took in with him the youkai living on the mountain
人里を襲った
Box: And attacked human dwellings.

いつしか自分自身が牛鬼と呼ばれるようになった
Box [...holycrap :3 baby fanboys!]: Before he knew it, he himself became known as Gyuuki.


母の愛を
Box: So many years passed
忘れてしまうくらい年を経た―――
Box: That he even forgot his mother's love——

ぬら組と呼ばれる百鬼夜行と抗争が起こったのはその頃だ
It was around this time that a dispute with Hyakki Yakou, known as the Nura Clan, occurred.

彼らは突然やってきて牛鬼に堂々とぶつかってきた
Box: They came on suddenly, and challenged Gyuuki without hesitation.

こいつら．．．オレをつぶそうというのか！！
Gyuuki: These bastards... So they think they can crush me?
ふざけるな！！
Gyuuki: Don't make me laugh!!

武闘集団の一大勢力となっていた牛鬼組はやはり真っ向からぶつかった
Box: The Gyuuki Clan had become one of the strongest warrior factions, and as expected, clashed with the Nura Clan head on.

抗争は三日三晩続き―――
Box: The dispute lasted three days and three nights—
地力で勝るぬら組が結果的に上回った
Box: In the end, the stronger Nura Clan came out on top.

そして大将として――
Box: Then, as the commander—
首を刈られる．．．そう思ったとき――
Box: He would be beheaded... or so he thought—

「やつはオレをためしたのだ
Box: "He was testing me."

自分の身をぶつけて――
Box: "He attacked in person—"
そして上回ってなお――
Box: "He came out on top—"

オレを認めた――」
Box: "And he acknowledged me."

かなわぬと思った
Box: He had thought it was impossible.
それから数日後
Box: And then, a few days later:

Box: Gyuuki drank the pledge of loyalty with Nurarihyon.

牛鬼は盃を交わした時言われた言葉
Box: The words that Nurarihyon said when Gyuuki drank the pledge of loyalty...
あの言葉を――　忘れることはなかった
Box: They were words that he would never forget.

それが．．．お前の祖父であり
Gyuuki: That... was your grandfather.
私の．．．親分．．．だ．．．
Gyuuki: My... boss...

私もかつては“人”だった
Gyuuki: I too was "human" once.
“生きたい”と．．．願う人間．．．
Gyuuki: A human who... prayed for his life...

SFX: drip drip

だが．．．人間には．．．
Gyuuki: However... Humans...
悪鬼に耐える力がない――
Gyuuki: Do not have the strength to resist demons—
