About Nurari-hyon (taken from japanese wikipedia)

ぬらりひょんは、日本の妖怪。漢字表記は滑瓢。ぬうりひょんとも。
Nurari-hyon is a Japanese Youkai. Its name in kanji is 滑瓢. Or, hiragana nurari-hyon.

外見は、特徴的な形状をした禿げ頭で、上品な着物姿の老人。
Its typical appearance is that of an old man, with a bald head and an elegant kimono.

忙しい夕方時などに、どこからともなく家に入ってきて、お茶を飲んだりするなどして自分の家のように振舞う。
On nights when people are out and about, it slips into homes and drinks their tea and does other things as if it were its home.

人間が見ても「この人はこの家の主だ」と思ってしまうため、追い出すことができない。
It's impossible to drive it out of the house because it looks like the owner of the home. (t/n - I believe what they mean by this is that typically older people stay at home all day, so it's common to assume older people own the home they're staying in. since it looks like an old man, people easily draw that conclusion)

妖怪の総大将とも言われているが、これは後付け設定のようである（が、ゲゲゲの鬼太郎を始めとする数々の作品の影響により、このイメージは完全に定着しつつある）。
It's said that nurari-hyon is the supreme commander of all Youkai, but this is more of a recent change. (Gegege no kitarou started the trend, and many subsequent works have kept with the idea)

海に住むタコの妖怪という伝承があり、それに準じたのか『ゲゲゲの鬼太郎』アニメ4作目の京極夏彦脚本の話では正体がタコとされていた。
There is one tale that says it is an octopus-type Youkai that lives in the sea, and in Gegege no Kitarou's 4th anime screenplay by kyougoku natsuhiko this image was used.

実はよく知られた「怪しい老人」としての特徴は黄表紙などで江戸時代に創作されたものであるという説がある（その姿を描いた絵の名前は「ぬうりひょん」と読むのではないかとも言われている）。
There's one theory that it's a story that spun off of the idea of well-known works about "suspicious old men" that were common in the Edo period (1600s-late 1800s). (It is said that pictures crafted after the image these works described had names that were read as "nuri-hyon")

...well that's it! I might have a slight error in the above (not completely sure) but I'm confident I got the gist of it.
