Sooo... in my ongoing pursuit to overwork myself to death I'm translating a series from the beginning with that as a major theme.

This is for use by Keishou Scans who're doing volume scanlations with this.
I'm also using these as my basis for translation of the anime with my group Anime-Destiny, in joint with Tomodachi Subs.

Woo...

Top: Obata Takeshi
Yellow Bubble: There's no fantasy in this series at all, so I feel a bit nervous about it.

Mashiro: In the third year of middle school, the last year of compulsory education, adults always ask "What career are you choosing?" and "What're your dreams for the future?".
As for me, Mashiro Moritaka, age 14, I answer "I don't know." or "I haven't decided yet."
It's normal to move on to a good high school, college, and then a company.
I'm just going to live normally like that.

Page 10:
Mashiro: I don't want to trouble my parents, or be called a hikikomori.
So even though it would be easy to face a screen playing games or using a computer, I go to school.
And I don't want to be called a part-time worker, so even though I don't really want to, I'll become a salary man.
The ones who'll jump to the top at those places are the ones who're getting good grades. They've already got a high rank attached to them,
Teacher: Ooh, correct. Good work as always, Takagi.
Mashiro: A company would just be an extension of how things are now.

Page 11:
Mashiro: Living out a boring future is a drag.
This is my view of life after living out these 14 years as a good boy.
Teacher: This'll be on tomorrow's exam.

Page 12:
Mashiro: In a book I read recently by a great philosopher, or maybe it was a great "thinker"...
SFX: ZAH
SFX: CHIRA
Mashiro: it said "The greatest event in life, the greatest thing to live for, is love."
Yeah, right. That's some crap by a womanizing adult who can flirt with any woman he wants. For me, who can't even talk to the girl he likes,
SFX: ZAH ZAH

Page 13:
Mashiro: love is trying, painful thing.

Teacher: The grades for the first term of your 3rd year will have a big affect on your admission into high school. So everyone, do your best on tomorrow's mid-term exams.
SFX: GATA GATA GATA
Somebody: Man, we're already in our third year, sure came fast.
I don't wanna to think about admissions tests.
Yeah, I wanna play games.

Page 15:
Guy: Suzuki's, Saikou, you guys wanna go see a movie since we finally got out early?
TL Note: The kanji in Mashiro's first name, Moritaka (最高), can also be read as the word "Saikou" which means "the best" or "great".
Suzuki: Ah, you mean that sexy one? Sounds good.
Saikou: We have a half day so we can study, right? I'll be studying, see ya.
Guy: You're not coming, Saikou?
Suzuki: Oh... I should study, too.
Saikou: I'm home.
Mom: Welcome home, Moritaka. Are you all right with instant ramen for lunch?
Saikou: Yeah. I'll eat in my room.

Page 16:
Saikou: HAAAAAAA.
SFX: DOSA
Saikou: Tomorrow is Japanese and Math......
Huh?
Lower Book: [cut off] Modern Japanese
Higher Book: Math [cut off]
Saikou: ..........
I forgot my math notebook at school.
I can study without it, but
I don't want that left in the school until tomorrow morning.

Page 17:
Saikou: What a pain.
SFX: KASHA...
Teacher: What's wrong, Mashiro?
Saikou: Sorry. I forgot my notebook.
SFX: GARAH
Saikou: !

Page 18:
Saikou: Takagi Akito.
What're you doing here? Shouldn't you be hurrying home to study in order to protect your place as #1 in the grade?
Well, this guy's good in the first place, so I guess he's got some leeway.
But anyhow, what's he doing along?
!
My notebook!

Page 19:
Saikou: Oh no, he found out that I like Azuki.
Takagi: Don't make such a serious face.
This ain't a Death Note, you know.
Saikou: Why do you have my notebook?
Takagi: Because I sit all the way in the back.
Saikou: ?......
Takagi: I knew that during class, you were putting your heart and soul into writing something in this notebook in a way that no one would notice.
Also that you forgot it and were going home.

Page 20:
Takagi: And sorry, but after everyone left I took a look at this,
and I thought you'd definitely come back to get it.
Saikou: !
Takagi: So I waited for you.
Saikou: He waited? What's this guy planning?
Takagi: Anyhow, these are great.
Azuki Miho's good. She's quiet so no one notices her, but she's way the best looking in this school.
Saikou: ..........
Does Takagi like her, too......?

Page 21:
Takagi: Azuki probably likes you, too.
Mashiro: N......No way.
I've never even talked to her.
And anyhow, how would you know something like that?
Takagi: I told you, didn't I?
Because I sit all the way in the back.
Saikou: So by sitting in the seat in the last row, you watch over everything and can understand everything going on in the class?
Shuujin: Yeah, sorry.
Saikou: ..........

Page 22:
Takagi: But if it were the case that the person in question didn't feel that way, then I'd freely admit that my instincts have their limits.
Saikou: Eh... What's up with this guy? What's he so happy about?
Dammit.
Takagi: Don't worry. I'll give you your notebook back.
And I won't tell anybody about the secrets in it.
Saikou: Thanks for that.
Shuujin: However!
I have one condition.
Saikou: Here it comes.
What?
Is he gonna tell me to back off Azuki? I don't have the courage to try confessing anyhow.

Page 23:
Takagi: Team up with me and become a mangaka.
I've liked manga since i was a kid, and becoming a mangaka is my dream.
I've thought about it a lot, but I need you and your drawings.
Saikou: Takagi's a top student, even on the national level, and he wants to do manga? Dream?...... What's this guy thinking?

Page 24:
Takagi: Ever since their birth, guys wanna be someone big, don't they? They wanna be rich, right?
I don't have the looks or singing ability to get into show business, and I'm nothing great with sports.
But I have writing talent and you have drawing talent.
Japan's manga is already world renowned as a great culture. Let's leave our mark on the world with manga.
作文や感想文でたくさん賞状貰うおまえが話を考えて俺が絵を描く
Saikou: You want me do draw the pictures for you, whose stories have won tons of awards with your writing and reports...
Sounds interesting......
Takagi: Right?
Saikou: But I'm gonna say no.
Takagi: So you're saying "no"? You're a pretty big manga fan, too.
Saikou: Yeah, I guess I read it.

Page 25:
Saikou: But I can't become a mangaka. People who can are a small portion of geniuses who were born with real talent.
Beyond that, it's just gambling.
Takagi: A gamble?
Saikou: A mangaka is someone who can make a living just drawing manga.
Even if you get serialized in a weekly magazine, questionnaires are taken by the readers every week, and if you're not popular you'll get canceled in 10 weeks.
Takagi: ? Why's this guy know so much about it...
Saikou: Either you have a big hit, or you get enough small ones to live off of then you're a mangaka. If you can't get that far, it's just gambling.
Even the author of the manga "Death Note" you mentioned, once wrote somewhere "If you don't have some job, then in 5 years you'll die of starvation."
Takagi: Heh, I didn't know that. Ah, but that was a pretty short one.

Page 26:
Saikou: Of the people who try to become mangakas, the ones that can live off it are 0.1%. No, one in every thousand of 0.1%, 0.001%. Only about one person in every hundred thousand.
Top Sign: 0.001%
Mangakas that can make a living
Bottom Sign: 0.0005% Mashiro Moritaka
0.0005% Takagi Akito
Saikou: And if I team up with you, it'd be 0.0005%, because it'd be divided in half.
Takagi: You sure got a lot more talkative. And what's up with this whole statistics speech?
Who'd you hear it from?
Saikou: Well, I guess it's okay to tell him. He's not the such an idiot that he'd go blabbing to everyone.
My uncle was a mangaka... no, one of those gamblers.
Yeah, "Was"......

Page 27:
Takagi: You're kidding me?
Saikou: It's true.
Takagi: Who is he!?
Saikou: Here we go again...
I'm sure you won't know him, "Kawaguchi Tarou", he used to be in Jump a long time.......
Takagi: EEEEEEH!? I watched the "Chou Hero Densetsu" anime when I was a kid!
TL Note: Chou Hero Densetsu = Super Hero Legend
In my 6th year of elementary school, I bought the volumes at a used book store, too. I really like that manga.
Saikou: Huh? He knows about such an old manga? And I thought he was just a study geek----

Page 28:
Takagi: That clinches it!
Saikou: Hm? Clinches what?
Takagi: You've got mangaka blood running through your veins, don't ya!? And if there're something about manga we don't know, we can always ask your uncle.
This is awesome!
SFX: GAH
Saikou: What do you mean, "running through my veins"? He's my uncle, my dad's little brother.
And my uncle's already......
Takagi: No, it's definitely in your blood.
!
Now that I think about it, Kawaguchi Tarou's drawings were really crappy. And yours are great---- So maybe you don't have a blood connection after all----
It definitely was a gamble to try to become a mangaka with those drawings.
Saikou: ..........

Page 29:
Saikou: I'm don't think I'll talk about uncle with him anymore.
Anyhow, I'm not doing it, so if that's your condition I don't need the notebook.
See ya, thief.
Takagi: Wait!
Are you thinking about making use of your drawing talent in the future?
Saikou: Not at all.
Takagi: It'd be such a waste, then. If you go to high school and college, it'll still be 7 years. Isn't it worth just giving it a shot?
It may just be a gamble, but if you don't buy a lottery ticket, you'll never win.
And if you don't draw manga, you'll never get a hit. Which do you think gives you a better chance of getting you 300 million?
Saikou: You have a higher chance of making it than winning the lottery...?
Uncle said something like that, too.

Page 30:
Takagi: Come on, let's give it a try.
Saikou: ......
SFX: GUIH
Saikou: Hey, by the way, book reports and stuff are totally different from manga.
Takagi: I know.
I wrote those things knowing what the judges reading them wanted to get.
If I just write it towards publishers and readers, it'll be fine.
Saikou: Then why don't you go for the Naoki Prize?
TL Note: The Naoki Prize is an award held semiannually for upcoming novelists.
Takagi: No, Manga's more profitable right now, and I like manga better.
I can feel the dream.
Takagi: More profitable...... Dream...... So in the end, it is just a gamble.

Page 31:
Saikou: Then why don't you just do the pictures yourself, too? Right now there are things like classes for original authors out there, so why don't you apply for one of those?
There are tons of people in the world who can draw better than me.
Takagi: What? Are you trying to get a job as a public servant or an employee in a stable company or something?
Saikou: No I still don't know about my future... I thought the ones aiming for that sort of thing were the ones who can study well, like you.
Takagi: Then why're you refusing!?
Saikou: ..........Why...?
Now that you say it, I'm not really sure myself.
I guess... because it's too much trouble.
Takagi: .........
Saikou: Well, I'm going home to study.
Thanks for the notebook.
SFX: Gara...

Page 32:
Takagi: Y...You're just going to coast through life like that and be a salary man!
That's all you want out of life!
Saikou: For the third year of middle school, to have a dream and already be trying to move forward with it, you're the unusual one.
I'm normal.
Takagi: It's better to start early!
Everyone else just can't decide what they want and go through life dragging their feet!

Page 33:
Takagi: Just try thinking about it seriously! Are you all right with how things are going?
If you and I work together, we can definitely do it!
Saikou: You sure are persistent.
All right. I'll go home and think about it a little.
Takagi: Eh, seriously?
Saikou: Yeah, but the answer's probably gonna be "no".
Takagi: That's okay. Anyhow, just think it over carefully. And if you say no, I'll quit asking.

Page 34:

Saikou: When I was in elementary school, I wanted to become a mangaka.
For me back then, Uncle was a hero. So I hung out at Uncle's workplace often.
Uncle, why did you become a mangaka?
Kawaguchi: I'm still just a gambler.
Saikou: Oh, right. Then why're you a gambling?
Kawaguchi: Because I wanted to be popular with women.

Page 36:
Saikou: Mangaka are popular?
Kawaguchi: I dunno. But I guess I thought that if I became famous and rich, that would make me popular.
Signs: Japanese spirit!?
Wake up!
It's fine, just draw!!
Keep deadlines!
SFX: KACHA...
Kawaguchi: Don't tell anyone.
(On Page): Hehe...
Saikou: Uwah, he's grinning, it's creepy...
Kawaguchi: When I was in middle school, there was this girl I liked.
Saikou: Yeah?
Kawaguchi: But without ever really talking to her, graduation came around.
Saikou: What a short story!
SFX: Kachih
Kawaguchi: But on the day of graduation, I received a letter from that girl.
Saikou: A love letter!? Great!
SFX: FUUUU...

Page 37:
Kawaguchi: No, all she wrote was stuff like, "let's both do our best from now on".
Saikou: Heeeeh.
Kawaguchi: So, I wrote her a reply saying, "Yes, let's both work hard".
We went to different high schools, so we just exchanged letters like "Are you doing well? Let's keep working hard." and never saw each other.
Saikou: Heeeh? That actually sounds kinda nice. So that's what it it was like back then?
Kawaguchi: Yeah. These days there nobody doing thinks so frustrating. Even in my time, there weren't really any around.
But with it continuing like that, after graduating high school she got into a top corporation and I went to a fourth-rate college.

Page 38:
Kawaguchi: I had gotten it into my head that I wanted to marry her, so I thought to myself, "This is bad, if I keep going like this I'll end up as a cog in some medium to small sized company."
"I want to do something to earn her approval."
I didn't have any money, so I that's when I started to think that as long as I had paper and a pen, I could be a novelist or mangaka.
Saikou: Heeeeh. Just from writing letters to one another you decided you wanted to marry her?
Kawaguchi: Yeah, neither of us ever said "I like you" or anything but she was a real beauty and had a good personality and I was always into her since middle school.
Plus she was sending me letters, too, so I thought there was a chance.
Saikou: .........If you put it that way, it sounds possible.

Page 39:
Kawaguchi: In my fourth year of college I was finally serialized in a monthly magazine, and with the full intent to confess my love, I called her house directly for the first time.
Saikou: Oh! Then what?
Magazine: Opening Color
Happy Rensh[cut off]
Kawaguchi Tarou
Asking how things were going first put a damper on it.
Saikou: ?
Kawaguchi: She had become secretary to the company president. And I thought that was great, but...
How should I say this...
I thought being a novice monthly author where I could get canceled any minute wasn't good enough.
The difference between us was getting wider and wider. Thinking that, I couldn't confess.
Saikou: But "Chou Hero Densetsu" became an anime, so by then you'd already confessed, right?
Poster: Super Hero Legend
TV Anime On-Air[cut off]
Kawaguchi: By then I was already 30 and she had married someone else.
Saikou: Aah?

Page 40:
Kawaguchi: It was like I made a wager on love and lost.
Saikou: You lost------?
Kawaguchi: But the reason I was able to work so hard was because of her. Even now, the reason I'm doing manga and haven't given up is because I think she's watching from somewhere.
As a salary man, even if I'd gotten results, she wouldn't see it.
Saikou: Heeeeeh.
Uncle seemed kinda happy talking about it.
And even though I was just in my fourth year of elementary school, somehow I could understand how he felt.

Page 41:
Saikou: But two years after this conversation.......
when I was in my 6th year of elementary school, Uncle died.
Game: You can no longer stand.
Saikou: I heard from my parents that he died from overwork, but I think he committed suicide. That way seemed a lot more like Uncle who was always talking about how life was a gamble you either won or lost.
The works he game out with after the one that became an anime didn't sell at all. He wrote two series in 7 years they both got canceled really soon. And I only found out after he died, but he had quite a bit of debt.
From the moment Uncle died, the path called "mangaka" disappeared from my mind.
Someone: Moritaka.
Saikou: Hm? What?
SFX: KON KON

Kawaguchi: This is bad, if I keep going like this I'll end up as a cog in some medium to small sized company.

Saikou: I don't know this number.
Takagi: Ah, it's me, Takagi.
Saikou: Takagi, how do you know my cell phone number?
Takagi: I heard it from Suzuki.
Saikou: That's against the rules..........
Takagi: More importantly,
I'm going to Azuki's house now to confess to her, and I want you to come, too.
Saikou: HUH?

Page 45:
Saikou: He knows I like Azuki, so what's this guy up to?
W-What? So you can't confess alone? That's piti.......
Takagi: It's not that. If you're not there, there's no point, so hurry and get there.
Saikou: I'm telling you I don't understand.
Takagi: I won't do anything bad. I love your art and I like you.
Saikou: Are you OK? You're confessing to the wrong person.
Takagi: Ah? Well yeah, er no, that's not what I mean.........
After we talked I looked a bit into Azuki and I found out something amazing! I've gotta confess!!
Saikou: ?
Like I said, why do I need to be there for you to...
Takagi: Don't worry about that, just get here quickly! I'm at Lawson's in Nishichou.
Saikou: .........
Phone: *Buh*

Takagi: Okay, let's go!
It's right over there!
Saikou: Wh-Why me, too!?
SFX: DAH
Takagi: She sure has a nice house. A house fit for a madonna.
Saikou: That's true......

Page 47:
Takagi: H...... Here goes.
Saikou: Have you ever even pressed the doorbell of a girl's house before?
Takagi: Have you? If so, could you push it for me!?
Saikou: No. And I don't want to. Plus you're the one confessing.
Takagi: Then keep quiet.
I'm pushing it...
SFX: PINPOOOOON (Doorbell)
Saikou: No way, he really pushed it!
I wanna go hooome!
Takagi: Are you trying to play doorbell dash with me, you bastard?!
SFX: GAH

Page 48:
Someone: Yes?
Takagi/Saikou: !
Saikou: Oh man, one of her parents!
Takagi: U-Um, this is Takagi. I'm in the same class as Miho. There's something I want to ask Miho-san about tomorrow's teth...
Er, test...
Saikou: Is he chewing something?
Someone: Takagi-kun?
That great studier, Takagi-kun?
Takagi: Uh... Well,
yes.
Saikou: Awesome. Even his parents know how good he is at his studies. Does that mean he's already got the parent's approval...?
Someone: ..................
Takagi: ......?
Someone: -----------Please wait a bit.
Takagi: Ah, okay.
Saikou: You think she's suspicious of you?
Azuki: Yes?
Saikou: UWAH, it's Azuki's voice! This is insane!

Page 49:
Takagi: Could you step outside for a moment? I have something very important to talk to you about.
Azuki: Takagi-kun has something important to say?
I don't think I like that......
Azuki: Just a second.
Saikou: UWAAAAH, Azuki's coming out!? I wonder what her casual clothes are like.
Hey! Let her know that I'm here too!
Takagi: Ah.
SFX: DON
Takagi: Oh, right! Sorry, I'm about to blow a fuse here!
Saikou: I mean, it takes a lot from you, as the one confessing to her, but...
Takagi: !
SFX: GACHA

Page 50:
Azuki: Mashiro-kun......
Saikou: Azuki......
Her casual clothes... are cute...
Oh... Oh man... Our eyes met...
And it feels like I was staring at her for a few seconds.
I... I'm sure my face is going red.

Page 51:
Azuki: Oh no... I might be blushing.
SFX: PATA...
Takagi: ......
I thought so.
Azuki-san.
Azuki: Yes?
Takagi: I'm becoming a mangaka. I came here to confess that to you.
Saikou: !?
Huh!? Why would he go all the way to Azuki for something like that, is he an idiot...... -------......Wait, what he was confessing was THIS? ["THIS?" is huge.]

Page 52:
Takagi: I only heard this from your friend Miyoshi-san, but
you're trying to become a seiyuu, Azuki-san?
TL Note: A seiyuu is a Japanese voice actor.
Saikou: Eh!?
A Seiyuu!?
Azuki: Yes.
Saikou: "Yes"?
She confirmed it!
W... Whawha? There's, there's no way she could really be aiming to become a seiyuu, right?
She's making such a docile face, but what's she thinking? What's with everyone looking for dreams? Are you all a bunch of eager fanboys!?

Page 53:
Takagi: You took voices you recorded yourself to a production office, you're working hard, huh?
Saikou: Seriously? She's going that far? How can she have such a calm face when he's saying something so embarrassing? It... It's impossible. You can't become those things. Act more down to earth, people!
Takagi: And the production people were impressed, they said you were good.
Saikou: Eh? She was good!? She can become one? Azuki, a seiyuu? I'd support her then, but...
No.
If that happens she'll be famous, and the difference between her and an ordinary person like me will be...... !
Kawaguchi: The difference between us was getting wider and wider. Thinking that, I couldn't confess.

Page 54:
Takagi: Okay, next, a word from Mashiro.
Saikou: Eh?
Me? What do I say?
That I like her?
I-I'm
I'm doing the drawings, he's doing the story.

Page 55:
Azuki: I knew it! That's amazing! I'm sure you two can do it, then!
Shuujin: Wah. Her eyes are shining! Azuki's eyes are all sparkly!
How pretty!
S-So if our manga gets turned into an anime, then we'll reserve the role of heroine for you or something...
SFX: TATA
Azuki: Really? I'm so happy!
I'll do my best!!

Page 56-57:
Azuki: I'll definitely become a seiyuu and appear on your anime, Mashiro-kun. How great!
Saikou: UWAAA, she said it's "great"! She's really getting in high spirits. What an awesome smile. She's looking at me, and she came so close. She's sooo super cute ----Azuki----
This is all building too fast, I can't understand it--- But anyhow, Azuki's dreams and my feelings.......
Kawaguchi: When I was in middle school, there was this girl I liked.
I had gotten it into my head that I wanted to marry her,
marry her
marry...
Saikou: So if that dream comes true,
please marry me!

Page 58:
Azuki: Eh?
Takagi: Eh?
Saikou: Eh?
SFX: KAAAA...
SFX: Tatata
SFX: PATAN
Takagi: What did you just say?
Saikou: Yeah, what did I say....... In my third year of middle school......... [italics on "did"]
Oh, I see, I got it overlapped with Uncle's story......
Aw man, I'm so embarrassed...
She'll think I'm an idiot!
I've gotta correct myself!

Page 59:
Azuki: Mashiro-kun.
Saikou: !
Y-Yes!
Sorry, uh, you see, what I said just now......
Azuki: Okay, I promise..........
Saikou: Eh?
What? What do you promise?
Azuki: ..................
Saikou: C-Could you mean the marriage thing?
Azuki: Yes...
Takagi: UOOOOOOOH
Saikou: UOOOOOOH?

Page 60:
Saikou: This is baaad, what's going on? Er, no, it's not bad.
I can marry Azuki.
Azuki: But only when our dream comes true. Until then I won't see you again.
Saikou: Huh?
I won't see her? What's with that?
U-Umm...... When our manga becomes an anime, you'll be a seiyuu for it, Azuki-san.
And until them we won't meet, then we'll suddenly get married?
Azuki: Yeah. Until our dream comes true, we'll work hard without looking at each other.
Saikou: What's with that? The highway to romance?
And wait, isn't that gonna be hard......?

Page 61:
Azuki: Until then we'll just encourage each other through emails and such.
Saikou: Encourage each other? That sounds good.
But why emails, and not phone calls?
No, phone calls would be embarrassing, and we wouldn't be able to talk. Did she forsee that so we'd only do mails?
I haven't even been able to talk to her before. Even if I'll be able to email her the whole time...
! Ah, wait a minute, this......
is the same pattern as with Uncle, isn't it.........?
So that's how it is.
Takagi: ?
Saikou: I get it, I understand, Uncle.
You and her also had this kind of naive, yet pretty relationship, right?
But Uncle, if my dream comes true, we've promised to get married.
I've got better conditions for my bet, don't I?

Page 62:
Azuki: Do you not want to?
Saikou: No, that's fine! I'll make the bet! Er, I mean, yes, I accept!
Azuki: Ah, my mom's coming. Bye.
SFX: Puh.
Saikou: I'll become a mangaka.
Takagi: Ooh.
This went just as I planned, no, it turned out even better than I planned, Saikou.
Let's become the top mangakas in Japan!
Saikou: The top in is impossible! In this rapidly aging society, it will be impossible to overtake the likes of Dragonball and One Piece!
Takagi: That's a pretty cool-headed analysis.
SFX: ZAH
Saikou: Also, me becoming a mangaka isn't limited to being teamed up with you.
Takagi: EEEEEEH?
Saikou: Let's stop in at the book store for a minute before we go home.
Takagi: Hey, Saikou!

Page 63:
Saikou: Actually, now that I think about it, I don't know Azuki's cell phone number or email address.
Before I can do that I need to talk to her at school............
But "Us two won't see each other"?
No, it'll be fine, we'll just start that afterwards.
I'll become one, a mangaka!
And I'll marry Azuki!!
