UPDATE: Added a note on Jiraiya's transformation.

I added a glossary to this one, because it merits one.

The explanations for words marked by asterix* can be found there, as well as one or two translator notes.

As always, suggestions and corrections are more than welcome.

Page 1.

NARUTO -ナルト-

Up against Pain and his bizarre kuchiyose*, Jiraiya gets right down to business!

Panel 3, Jiraiya.

Against this guy, testing the water's a waste of time!

I'm pulling out all the stops right from the get-go!

Page 2.

Panel 1, Jiraiya.

I’m using Sennin* mode!

Panel 2, Gamaken-san.

You mean … then- !

Panel 3, Jiraiya.

That's right…I'm summoning the Nidaisennin*!

Panel 4, Jiraiya.

Buy me some time 'till then!

Panel 4, Gamaken-san.

Got it. I’ll do my clumsy ole best!

375: Nidaisennin…*!

Page 3.

Panel 4, Jiraiya.

He's disappeared…

Not good…where the hell he'd pick that thing up, anyway?

Panel 5, Jiraiya.

Now he's made himself invisible, we gotta resort to barrier based tactics!

Panel 5, Ken-san.

Yeah…it's gonna be a tricky fight, alright!

Page 5.

Panel 1, Pain.

That's a ninjutsu barrier that detects you as you set foot in it, if I’m not mistaken…

Panel 3, Cerberus.

Panel 5, Jiraiya.

He saw the barrier and switched to one with strong attacks!

Page 7.

Panel 1, helpless populous.

Panel 4, Jiraiya.

Oi! Can't you do a little better!

Panel 4, Gamaken-san.

You know clumsy ole me…

Panel 5, Jiraiya.

These guys increase every time they're hit…not even sure what to call 'em anymore…

Pooches caught in a self-amplification kuchiyose jutsu?

Page 8.

Panel 1, Cerberus.

Panel 3, Jiraiya.

Here they come! They’re splitting up again!

Page 9.

Panel 2, Jiraiya.

Panel 4, Gamaken-san.

Page 11.

Panel 1, Jiraiya.

No way to attack the summoner when he's invisible!

That said, making the summoner invisible's probably the creature's sole purpose!

Panel 2, Jiraiya.

You don't find any of this odd?

Panel 3, Gamaken-san.

Clu…clumsy ole me wouldn't know…

Panel 4, Jiraiya.

Possessing the same eyes as the Rikudou Sennin*, not only did he master every last jutsu I taught him…

But he achieved the allegedly impossible: for a single individual to use all six chakra qualitative transformations*!

Panel 5, Jiraiya.

We're talking about a guy whose natural gift for core ninjutsu…

Allowed him to become proficient at all jutsu at the age of ten…

Panel 6, Jiraiya.

Why then…just why…

Page 12.

Panel 1, Jiraiya.

Does he limit himself to kuchiyose?

Panel 2, Jiraiya.

Maybe he figures there's no need for he himself to fight.

You can go home, Gamaken-san! I'll take it from here.

Page 13.

Panel 1, Gamaken-san.

Good luck*!

Page 14.

Panel 4, Ane-san*.

Boy! You mind tellin' me why you only summon us when there's trouble!?

Small wonder Bunta* gets pissed!

Page 15.

Panel 1, Kashira*.

Now, don’t say that, darlin'*!

Jiraiya-chan's* got his reasons, ye know.

Panel 1, Ane-san.

You keep yer trap shut, baby*!

Panel 2, Jiraiya.

You'll forgive me for calling you guys at a time like this, after so long…

Kashira, Ane-san.

Panel 3, Ane-san.

Still, boy…you said you hated this form…

Goin' on about how it wasn't popular with the ladies…

Panel 4, Jiraiya.

Well, that's a luxury I can't afford right now…

You see, my opponent has Rinnegan

Panel 5, Ane-san(?)

Oooh…the Rikudou's eyes!

You're telling me they really exist?

Panel 6, Jiraiya.

They do.

So I humbly request your assistance…

Page 16.

Right then, here we go!

A shocking Jiraiya! Just what is “Hermit mode”!?

Page 17.

自来也の本領!最強の口寄せに戦況一変!? 次号、「無敵」へ...!!

Jiraiya's unique power! The tide suddenly turns in the battle of the ultimate kuchiyose!

Next issue: “Invincible”!

Kuchiyose. Summons in the world of naruto. The term kuchiyose actually refers to the act of a priestes summoning a spirit and communicating its will to others. So, it does not literally mean "summon."

Sennin. A hermit who dwells in the mountains and has mastered supernatural powers in his pursuit of perfection.

Nidaisennin. Two Great Sennin.

Rikudou Sennin. The hermit of the six paths. A fictional character. See previous chapters.

All six chakra qualitative transformations. "Qualitative transformation" is the translation I've settled on for 性質変化. It is, in the end, a downright literal translation. Normally, this would refer to changing your chakra into one o the five elements: earth, wind, water, lightning and fire. So what's the sixth one? Unclear, but most likely "Yin/Yang." Yin and yang are not two separate elements, but two sides to the same dichotomy. Thus, it may be assumed manipulating this dichotomy is technically "qualitatively transforming" your chakra. Yamato referred to "Yin/yang" as a "qualitative transformation" in chapter 316 (Vol. 35, page 127). Also of note is that Jiraiya's not saying he learned them all by himself, but rather, that it should technically be impossible for a single individual to use them all (remember that Kakuzu was a composite of multiple individuals).

Good luck. This is literally "sorry", so I'm sure someone's bound to translate it as such. However, Ken-san's not so much apologizing as he is politely saying good-bye. "Sorry" is a way of saying "thanks" in Japanese. In this case, it's kind of like "thanks for letting me go home (even though you're still fighting here)." So, I went with "good luck", which is what I figure someone would say in English under the same circumstances.

Bunta. The summon creature "Gamabunta."

Ane-san. A term used to address a "female ringleader" or the wife of one.

Kashira. A term used to address a "ringleader" or "boss."

Darlin'*. "Kaa-chan." Literally "mom." Japanese husbands may refer to their wives as "mom," provided they have children.

Jiraiya-chan. Contrary to what some may think, "chan" may be applied to just about anyone, and not just girls. It's a diminutive, "cute" way of addressing one, so you wouldn't address someone with "chan" unless you're close and/or of higher stature plus fond of the person.

Baby.* Tou-chan. Literally "dad." See "Darlin.*" The same applies.

On Jiraiya's transformation.

When I saw this chapter, an episode I'd read in the first Databook came to mind. It's on page 246, in the preliminary drawing section. Kishi's talking about his first ideas for Jiraiya. I'm sure someone's already scanned the databook and translated this section, but it's easier for me to just translate it right now than it would be to look for it. At any rate, I'm sorry I can't include the drawings themselves (I don't have a scanner), but I'm sure those interested won't have much trouble finding them online.

Anyway, here's the excerpt.

"Since Jiraiya's very well known from lots of different ninja stories, I was really keen to include him in Naruto since before the start of serialization. Originally I was gonna have him be this gruff, greasy, middle-aged man...and the idea's that when he got angry, or excited by seeing cute girls, he'd change into this awkward appearence. So it was like, he grew stronger with the transformation, but lost his sex-appeal. But then I thought, it'll be a real pain drawing both, so...(*smiles*). He was actually gonna use the two frogs you see on his shoulders in the same drawing. They were gonna be husband and wife, and I'd have them do manzai.* But, it was real difficult from a design stand point, so I gave it up, too..."

*Manzai. A japanese form of standup comedy done in pairs, which originated in the Kansai region (Ane-san and Kashira speak some form of Kansai dialect, probably one used in Manzai).

A note for your glossary - the consensus for 性質変化 has been to use "nature" or "elemental" as part of the translation, as it ties into the idea of the elements of nature that are present in most jutsu. Especially since the term originated when Kakashi was explaining how elemental jutsu work, and how each ninja has an affinity towards a certain element.

Qualitative transformation sounds too much like...math...*shudder*

Thanks for the pics, guys!

Well, there you go, looks like Kishi decided to finally implement something close to his original idea for Jiraiya...which make me think this is indeed the last we'll ever see of good ole Ero-Sennin, *sniff*...*sniff*...

Let's see...next would be Tsunade? I think nobody would mind if he killed Sasuke instead, but oh, well...

Kudos on a wonderful translation dude, it was perfect, and the end notes are awesome.

Iwanin, thanks so much for the excellent translation, and for those end-notes, especially the explanation of the 6th element and Jiraiya's transformation. I definitely got a lot more out of the chapter after reading your notes! :D

nahkampfbiber and Nihongaeri, thanks for uploading those databook pics! I can't wait to see how the final design turns out!
