Manga on The Go

+ posted by njt in Manga News on Oct 3, 2009 22:06

I've mentioned in the past about manga appearing on cell/mobile phones but for those of you who are curious as to what they look like in action we have a video for you.

Included is how manga looks on not one cell phone, but two. One being your typical Japanese cell phone and the other being the google android.

I've also included my thoughts on the PSP's official manga viewer that will be debuting on the 11th of December as well as what manga looks on a psp, right now.

Then, to top it all off I show what manga looks like on the Sony e-reader PRS-500 (keep in mind there are newer e-readers available and are probably the better choices ;) ).

If you have any questions on anything mentioned in the video, don't hesitate to ask.

Enjoy the video :).

If this has changed your mind about reading manga on the go, let me know too ^^;.

i already read some mangas on my psp and i gotta say its pretty good. but the ebook reader is pretty good aswell. but with a psp u can play games and listen to music whiles u read manga, thats if u know how to do it.

PSP FTW!!! :D

I haven't thought it's so easy on it :)
I mean, I haven't ever wanted to buy it, but I'm positively surprised.

Very good review. You presented all pros and cons really well.

In our database you'll find it as parasyte (http://mangahelpers.com/m/parasyte) - a kodansha title though...

To me both PSP and e-reader looked good, with a slight preference to the latter because of what you said about PSP serving 4koma likes. That's the reason why I didn't like the first two. The one was panel by panel, which is horrible thinking of double spreads and whatnot and the other had that annoying zoom function - maybe you get used to it once you use it, but this way it looks like you need more time zooming than actually reading xD

been reading manga on my g1 lately, but still don't like phone manga though. It's too small. I still prefer my computer and tankoubon for manga.

I liked the look of the Psp. Of course I would prefer something as big as the e-reader but the greyscale level looked bad.

So Id prefer something of book size with good zoom and good greyscale.

I already tried on mobile phone:
- screen too small
- it is pretty slow, slow when you scroll, slow to load.. slow to read
- having to scroll continuously trough one page is frustrating

I also tried the colored version one on mobile phone :
- you loose the feeling of the manga, i mean... battles seem to have less action, and you can't get into it as well as normally

I would prefer the ebook device, it's much easier to read on it i guess... but it's pretty expensive for only reading -_- but still if i had the choice, i would take this!

I definitely like the full page view with zoom capabilities when needed. So I'm going to stick with my computer. As for size the eBook is a bit too big especially if it's only purpose is to display manga(for other types of books it would be an ok investment since you need the larger screen for reading pure text). The PSP is a good size, plus you can use other installed functions on it while reading manga as hash899 noted.

For the PSP if Sony should make their official program more like that image viewer, since the portrait view is better suited for displaying full pages.

Very good video, very informative and you displayed pretty well the differences and advantages :D

I live in South Africa, which is really really slow with manga..any one willing to help me on what decent comic viewing apps out there? if any...

I'm looking to pickup something like this for Christmas this year, with my long commute to work everyday it would be ideal, especially with Ippo STILL unlicensed, I swear I'm going to finally work through them with this.

But here's the big question, which e-reader is the best for this? The video mentions there are better ones on the market now but doesn't name any >_< anyone know which are THE choice for Manga atm?

Generally the higher the gray scale the better it'll look. Also I heard the sony 700's screen isn't very good so it'd be better to get the prs-505

I haven't done much research on these devices lately. But one I've wanted for a while is the iliad. 16 gray scales o/ and really big screen :333

I really want to get one for my Zune HD, but I don't really need the whole page. I know some people may want it, but plot and quality of the viewing space are most important to me. The e-reader has a lot of potential once they can get the thing down to a decent price. I know I said it already, but the Zune HD would be my choice... I've got some Naruto pages on here and the difference in viewing quality vs my monitor of my computer is night and day... OLED >>> LCD or CRT. I mean even as small as the screen is I can still read the words without zooming in because of how sharps the picture looks.

Of the ones in the video that I listed I liked the android the best. 1) ease of use. 2) fast 3) fits in my pocket and 4) clear enough screen for ease of reading :).

Though a psp would probably work just as well if you can't get an android ^^ (it's just a bit bigger ._.)

For casual use in the home the ebook reader would be better~ Get one that'd fit your needs here: http://wiki.mobileread.com/wiki/E-book_Reader_Matrix (remember - the higher the gray scale the better)

I couldn't agree more with google androids. i think it's convenient and practical when addiction gets through my spine. XD
I'd like to pass on clamshell phone and psp to read manga. because i love to view it in a whole page, and psp isn't good for my eyes.
I'm interested to read manga in the e-book reader too, but i don't know where to buy this gadget in my country. (and i heard the newest one is Rp. 3.10^6++ DX)

<nice video! :)>
