Gene Simmons' Son Has Got Some Explaining to Do...

+ posted by njt in Manga News on Feb 26, 2010 10:56
_________Bleach________________________________________Incarnate

Gene Simmons' son, Nick Simmons, surprises Bleach fans with his comic - Incarnate. And by surprises I mean mostly piss off. One fan spotting some similarties to the Bleach manga sparked tons of fans gathering together and comparing scene by scene to show that Nick's latest manga is a far stretch from being original. (Compilation of the images at the end of the article )

Fans then further took matters into their own hands and brought news of the event right to Kubo-sensei himself in which Kubo-sensei mentions on his twitter account:

Translation:
Quote:
12:07 - I've received tons of comments from fans overseas while I was sleeping stating that there is a manga in America that looks a lot like Bleach. I checked out the site that was all in English and not really knowing what it all said it appears that Gene Simmons' son Nick Simmons wrote a new manga.

12:08 - Quite frankly, more than whether it looks like it (bleach) or not, I'm more interested in the fact that Gene Simmons' son is a mangaka...

Incarnate's publisher has also responded to the overwhelming power of fans to, well, support Kubo's best interests stating:
Quote:

Radical's response in regards to Incarnate:
We at Radical Publishing, Inc. and Radical Comics, Inc. are quite concerned to hear the news surrounding Nick Simmons’s Incarnate Comic Book. We are taking this matter seriously and making efforts now to contact the publishers of the works in question in an effort to resolve this matter. We have halted further production and distribution of the “Incarnate” comic book and trade paperback until the matter is resolved to the satisfaction of all parties. Rest assured that Radical is taking swift action regarding this matter and will continue in its efforts to maintain the integrity and protect the intellectual property of artists throughout the world whose creative works are the bedrock of our Company and the comic book industry.

I understand the desire to want to draw like your favorite author, but if you're going to make a manga/comic look *that* much alike, it's best to come to Japan during Comiket and sell your doujinshi ;).

Well...
Plagiarism is a serious matter in every field.
Be it science, music , school or manga.

Nick Simmons is the son of an artist, so I wonder why he hasn't got any awareness on such a matter. Gene Simmons will be very disappoint.

I can see why someone would want to do a "better" version of Bleach since it went way downhill, but you blatantly copy the art style, characters, and subject. Come up with your own original work.

Hey, you surely know, that D and Deidara have nothing in common. Moreover, Left Hand is an active character, and Deidara's hands are just part of his body. Surely, there're a lot of common trends in comics (like, protagonist in red cape - Trigun, Hellsing, Archer, Ergo Proxy, anyone wanna count?), and, BTW, I don't think, that this Simmons ripped Alucard's glasses like someone said in LJ, but on some pictures there's too much similarity...

Well I can clearly see how much Nick Simmons love's Tite Kubo’s style which I would also respect. But to go about making a comic by copying scenes, panels and characters and making money out of it that’s were it goes wrong for me personally. I see Incarnate mostly as a fan comic but it would have been better if it was posted on a fan based site like smackjeeves or something...

I think the man dug his own grave just by doing this, he should learn from this and try that much harder to be more original in the future.

I agree that this is ridiculous...if you're going to be a mangaka it's best you don't rippoff from other artist.

Nick Simmons may be a ripper, but I think he's cool for doing it the way he did it.

Not only has this outcome reached the Bleach Manga author (Kubo Tite), it brought about a dramatic eruption to the fans. More like a comedic laughter.

I think this will just increase 'Nick Simmons' popularity when he publishes a new comic in the future. I doubt this will stain him or his father's reputation as everyone thinks it seems.

Heck, if I were Nick Simmons, I would be proud of myself! lol

Nick Simmons is frankly a very untalented fool. Unfortunately this will not only give him a bad name, but also to all the other aspiring manga-artists here in the Americas. It will also be that much harder to get manga into the states because all manga-ka's will be fearful that their work will be stolen. Badly done Nick Simmons, and also the publishing house that actually released the work. I find it hard to believe that they weren't aware of this blatant rip of, of such a recognizable series. Did they really believe no one would ever notice?!

I can hardly see how one can call this stealing. In order to steal there must be something to take and it is a known fact that bleach is a worthless manga. Simmons is only hurting himself by picking up inspiration where this is really none to be found. Man, just think if he is also borrowing plot ideas from Kubo, then he would be really screwed because not only would hit manga look similar to a stupid manga but it would also be just as boring to read.
#60. by KayalhawK ()

Personally, I think some could be considered a coincidence (as in, the one with the girl sitting down with her back to us... that sorta scene would be in many different manga's...)
Others, however, look like a blatent rip-off... such as image #10. Apart from a few things like the scar, they're virtually identical.

Way to ignore that probably 50% of all American Comic Book covers are "homage's" and to point this out as plagiarism. Besides, how many mangaka get their start by doing similar stories and art as the ones they were assistants on? But he could have at least copied a GOOD series.

It's fairly amusing to see several people trying so hard to defend a thief. Suffice to say that it's a relief to see Incarnate being suspended -- not that it would achieve the popularity enjoyed by Bleach anyway, especially when it already pissed off a big chunk of consumers to whom it was trying to sell in the first place.

Aside from #12, the biggest hint that he wasn't just copying but tracing were #7, #10 and #11. 80% of the guy's body is correctly proportioned, but the arm on the right is particularly disproportionate, roughly twice the size of the other. Why? Because it was covered by that speech bubble. Wow.

It took me some time to calm down (though I'm not a Bleach fan) - I only have one question: An US comic publisher didn't neither know Bleach nor did a check on recent other development on the comic market? In that land where you can sue Starbucks for actually serving hot coffee?

C'mon that publisher has been founded two or three years ago as independent label, and now everybody knows it, because a celebrity's son copied Bleach - just watch what they've been publishing so far. I don't say they did this on purpose - but it stinks to high heaven. At least it's good PR for Radical Comics whose parent company is named "Blatant Entertainment".

@TDA: Sure illegal is illegal - but that guy made money out of it.

I have to wonder if he isn't just scanning or copying basic outlines and layouts before filling in like a coloring book. Is the guy actually an artist? His book is over. He didn't have legal consent to copy. If Kubo doesn't sue him, Viz Media will certainly go after him.

Nick Simmons released a statement just two days ago:

"Like most artists I am inspired by work I admire. There are certain similarities between some of my work and the work of others. This was simply meant as an homage to artists I respect, and I definitely want to apologize to any Manga fans or fellow Manga artists who feel I went too far. My inspirations reflect the fact that certain fundamental imagery is common to all Manga. This is the nature of the medium. I am a big fan of Bleach, as well as other Manga titles. And I am certainly sorry if anyone was offended or upset by what they perceive to be the similarity between my work and the work of artists that I admire and who inspire me."

Original sources:
http://artsbeat.blogs.nytimes.com/2010/03/01/comic-book-creator-accused-of-plagiarism/
http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/2010-03-01/incarnate-simmons-addresses-alleged-bleach-copying

Looking at the overlays, it's obvious that Simmons did plagiarize but it's innocent till proven guilty here. Until this is settled in court, Simmons will very likely not admit to plagiarizing from Kubo.

This is huge and it's something that has to be addressed, not just with Kubo and Simmons but about art and plagiarism in general. Kubo or his representative in court should get a good lawyer who can express the anger that we all feel in our hearts to the jury and judge. And I do think Kubo should go to court on this.

Bleach is really a great mangá... one of the best in terms of draw, characters design and organization of the scenes. I can understand that someone use this work as a reference to do a totally original work... Like Hiro Mashima does with One Piece (XD don't shoot me!!!), but his works are really great and have its own identity!!

But it is exactlly the same as Tite Kubo's magificent work. It could not be accepted... I refuse to see him as an artist. ¬¬*
