(is still mad at 4Kids for ruining OP in the US)
I want a copy damn it!!! xD
If one of seinen series get 3,000,000 sales, then it's a surprise to me.
No matter how you look at it - a 3,000,000 first print is something extraordinary since no(!) other manga series has achieved this. Either shojo, seinen, josei etc.
I don't mind this :P
'Nuff said.
following the info u provided... the All-Time Best Selling Jump Series is Dragon ball, still 10 milion copies ahead .
(http://comipress.com/article/2008/12/31/3733) your same link xD
I have read some of this manga, but th little character that transform into an animal or so, it made me feel this manga was not very worth it... i see i might be wrong. There are people always reading the new released volume in the train! mm.. sometimes there are people reading some erotic stuf too so i don't know what to think :P
That was for up to volume 48^^;
it's now on volume 57 - with the previous volumes selling in the millions ^^;;
But still One piece deserves the recognition as one of the best manga of all time!
according to Wikipedia One Piece in 2009 sold around 176 million volumes
Love OP soo much!
Wow, I've been reading manga a long time... considering I had a lot of time for many other series I considered my favorite before coming across One Piece....
AND ODA IS GOD!!!(of one piece that is!)
hehe GOda!
I read all the comments here but they don't really explain anything :P
I read OP weekly too, but I'm curious to hear from the fans~
@shrimpy: How do you explain a piece of art? How do you explain the feeling you get when you listen to a song? How do you explain the feeling you get by gazing into your lovers eyes?
sigh...let me try to make my question more clear:
If you were to author a brand-new comic, what lessons can you learn from one piece to make it a hit too?
@Shrimpy, I'd also like to know why it is as good as it is. Not just "because it's awesome, cool fights, i lol alot" but really, in depth, what makes this manga so legen....wait for it.... dary.
One piece really doesnt offer a lesson lol, just a bunch of pirate drama like events. It puzzles me as to why it is high selling in japan, theres really no moral values one can learn from it that everyone else already knows. The way characters are drawn almost seems too Disney like, especially black beard, that dude looks like some disney villain, and then there are those cluster f**ks of panels were oda tries to put as much shit as possible. This far from a master piece. I'm gonna say the fact that it's about pirate shit like things is what makes this manga popular. The whole different pirate crews and stuff. And just to add more insult to this manga xD(kiddig) its universe doesnt come close to being as strong as other universes.
I dont think its as easy as that. Oda have a mind and fantasy that you just cant copy. From reading one piece I can imaging he must have an incredible charisma and somehow he manages to put that into the characters he creates. Thers allot of good mangas out there but one piece have a certain magic to it I never seen anywhere else. And I cant explain that magic. Can you?
1. Humor - One Piece has lots of humor (like balls of gold, okamas) that can be understood by many people.
2. Locations- One Piece is set around traveling around the world and landing on islands, from saving a country to pointless battles(Foxy). You never know what you might encounter reading One Piece.
3. Unique characters - Some people complain that some characters look weird but i like that as i can remember who is who.
4. Connection - most characters have some kinda connection to another character from past arcs
5. Main cast - One of the biggest things that make good manga is main characters. Naruto has 2 main characters Naruto and Saskue, Bleach has 1, One Piece has 9 and counting. And than we haven't seeing much of them lately as other characters have took their roles.
6. Living World - We are introduced to characters that have no connection to main cast that are doing there own thing. Sort of like giant whirlpool that pulls in everything instead of "Chosen Child that will save everyone". One piece have blurry line on who is good and who is evil. You have story about Pirates (who are evil?) Vs World Government (who are good?)
7. Fights- Fights due to Devil fruits are janken based as you can be strongest but you will have natural enemy
Oda managed to create his own World where you feel as sorta ghost taken along for the ride. That why people call him God.
for that I love this manga
every charachters in one piece have a charism and principle, and thats make it the best....
the plot its incredible and logical for the magical world of this manga.
I supose you look for a beautiful and sexy characters, who make a sexy pose, then thats not the manga I advice you
The current arc is just too good! Keep up the good work Oda!
just it.
People who bash OP for its unique art are utter fail. We don't need freakin' bishies as pirates, LOL.
@shrimpy: If you've followed the story way back, you wouldn't be wondering about that yourself. The story is filled with so many moral values.
I've started reading manga when I was in primary school, and that's more than 10 years now, and honestly One Piece is one of the manga I would considered 'epic'. I enjoy a wide variety of manga, but there really are only few that I wouldn't mind reading for like forever, and OP is one of them.
First One Piece's setting is beyond imagination, it incorporates vast range of cultures (each island/country have their own unique setting), religious beliefs, and the complexity of it really shows how much effort and creativity has been put into it by Oda to create such a master piece.
Many get turned off by the art, and I must admit I was one of those. I kept delaying it because I didn't enjoy the art, for about over a year, when I finally told myself I should start. And boy, I only regret not starting earlier! For a mainstream shounen manga, OP contains lots of the modern society issues you don't see in other manga. Other manga usually just contain the normal good vs evil, heros saving the world, more cooler battle scenes etc, but One Piece contains issue such as racism, politic corruption and cost of liberty. OP's plot is definitely one major aspect that absolutely blows me away, you can never guess what Oda will do next.
The characterization of One Piece is also very detailed. Like many had said, the art may be weird, but it definitely creates an imprint, and you will never forget the character. Unlike Bleach or Naruto, where sometime old characters reappear, and I'm sitting there racking my brains to remember who they are.
To cut the discussion short, like many fans had already stated, One Piece is awesome and it really deserve all the praise it does/doesn't get ^^
that's an old article,One Piece surpass dragon ball record in May 2009,
and now one piece(all time best selling manga)
& only at the half point of the whole story in year 2009
that 3 million+record not only for manga, but other domestic books too
so now the best selling records of all time
top 1 one piece
top 2 also one piece
top 3 one piece also
@Strider's♥Death
OP have tons epic speeches & lessons/morals unlike other manga
and the very important thing(say no to world government)
@shrimpy
other authors must learn this
from the author of OP
Oda:in order to preserve this, we have to keep moving forward, even though there might be some who have the delusion that once you've reached popularity, you can just stop at that point and work on routine. But if you do that, you're no longer "preserving" - you're "regressing". To release repetitions is the same as releasing old stuff."
Even entering your eleventh year of serialization, you're still burning with enthusiasm for manga.
"I always want to keep creating something that's better than what I've ever done before. Of course, if you want more people to read your creation, you need to have that feeling"
I also admit, the first time as I've seen One Piece my thoughts was lame. (Because of the Gum Gum thing ^^) But I am happy that I was that open-minded to give it a chance and guess what, I don't regret it.
Here I though of listing some of the points I like about One Piece, but it got a little complicated. So I simply say read what death13a and waterbaby12us have to say about it, they are pretty close to my points of view. :P
At the I suggest you to read the Manga to get the real feeling about it. ;)
Luffy is here TO stay!
I would say One Piece is so famous because it contains everything. Every Character is unique in its own way and every moment /story line in the manga is always unique too, and the variation of the character, island, background story makes the manga not just good, the variation makes more people to feel emotion for not just the main char, some side char too, they can understand some situation because u have been there too (thats why everyone just dont like 1 character because its "cool", ex: I like Frankys background story but my friend like Sanjis)
also OnePiece always use alot of variation in "theme", every Mainchar, every island have their own problem and issues and solution, and also the most thing i admire about One Piece is how Odá connect from 1 phase/theme to another (ex. from Vivi and alavasta to skypear), without any strange feeling left behind.
a nother thing that Odá do to maintain the fans is SBS, a comic event were the reader can ask question or just send some letteer to poke on Odá, he also show some humor and info at the SBS that makes him more familiar or easy talking for the fans. (different from Bleach and Naruto, OP Odá got a good conection to the fans) also Odá put some small detail that u normaly even dont notice in his manga (ex, comic 7 or 9, in the boad filled with people u can see a small text sayin : "Find the Pandaman!" that you actually can find).
Odá is kinda perfectionist but he denie that, but he knows that a master piece needs every small deatail to be reasonable, and thats why he always got answear if you find something that looks unreasonable. (well hes still a man, he do some wrong too :P )
But id say the most beautiful in OP is the characters, not how they look, how their personality are, and every motion and action they make is reasonable and conected to the personality, (and thats in my opinion, what Bleach Fails), and because of the variation of the character, it all makes it more interesting.
I think the best way to analyze One piece is to compare with another manga that use same concept but fails. (try read Fairy tail, a manga that some people say the art look like OP)
P.s Im Japanise so my english fails big time, well i hope u get abit of it atleast ;)
What differenciates OP from the others is that it begins slow, and while other shounen become less and less inspired, One Piece keeps getting better and better.
So the people who give up after reading only a few volumes don't know what they miss, and oh boy are we in for a ride... No manga has ever been this epic.
1) OP contains "words of wisdom" (like, sanji's "a man will forgive a woman's lies!" or chopper's teacher "we never die as long as we live in people's memories"). Apparently this aspect of OP is very big among native readers.
2) Dirty jokes. ...um...remember Franky's pants? Need I say more.
Now let me ask the opposite question:
What are One Piece's weaknesses? How could it be better?
[Please be a good sport and don't answer with "it's already perfect!" "blasphemy! oda is god!" etc etc.]
It was already mentioned in an above post, but I think that OP had luck on its side. That is to say, if it had begun now, in the very cutthroat Shounen Jump standards of today, OP may not have survived this long. It does indeed start very slow, and honestly, didn't really differ much from conventional shounen fare for a while. To survive today, you've got to take the best of everything out there and learn from it...hence my question.
I'm sorry if you don't consider me a good sport, Shrimpy, but I don't think any suggestion I could make could improve One Piece... even a little :P If it's one thing I could say about my own opinions of little details, I honestly don't care for it when it shifts into exposition-like boxes for describing what's going on. Since it's usually dialogue-driven, I like for it to stay as such. However, I recognize that Oda only uses it in the most ideal possible circumstances, so for most people, it would probably be a net detriment to lose those very few pieces of boxed-text.
What about YOU? Do you have any genuine thoughts on how One Piece could be better, Shrimpy? I'll seriously consider the potential results of whatever you suggest, and be honest if I think it would mean an improvement.
there is no other manga that has that much creativity as this one.
trully unique experience
Honestly I don't really know what makes OP the massive movement that it is. It is apparent at least that Oda takes great care in shaping his universe, and doing exactly what it is that he intended, and not what the popular media demands. Heck, you can look at some of these comments and realize it. From complaints about the 'kiddy' art, and the 'too playful' storyline, One piece has always been a little bit different from it's Shounen brothers in arms. I won't say that other manga of its type have regressed, and I can't really say that every author bends to the will of popularity, but the charm of One piece comes from the fact that it IS weird and offbeat.
That's not to say that any author can just do as he pleases and come up with something as monumental as One piece....in fact it does take a certain amount of 'luck' to get this far. No matter if you love or hate OP though, the one thing that most can agree on is that it's unique.....and nowadays with so many stories being rehashes of what we've already heard, uniqueness is a charm that is rarely seen, but goes so far.
I'd never had that before!! not even with Full metal alchemist! :o)
I liked the idea of the different seasons' names = main characters' names, but unlike onepiece, the works like fairy tale just felt like the author/artist's flame died while writing some parts...
basically I love odasensei's 遊び心! I feel like you can tell he enjoys writing each story and is always wanting to share that joy with us readers.
I'm so happy that it's doing so amazingly well!
ONE PIECE can not be perfect, but it's the closest manga to be one.....
I say that in comparison with other shonen ....
to think oda is a god, it'shorrible to say that, because I'm musulman and thats a sin for me, but he is a genius, and to give a liberty for a magician like him, it's our only role
~If~ this were true, the reason would not be that it's AWESOME or GODLY or THE BEST MANGA OF ALL TIME or written by THE BEST MANGAKA IN THE WORLD. The reason would be that it - like Naruto and Dragon Ballz - is intensely interesting to a lot of little boys who can spend their allowances on it. (Don't get me wrong, I'm a closet Naruto fan myself. I just think it's very silly to pretend these are not shounen titles.)
But it's not true. It's still behind Dragon Ballz, as your own link shows. :-/
And to be blunt? My love for weird titles would have probably led me to pick up One Piece to look... if it weren't for the ZOMG OVERENTHUSIASM of fans who say things like "[nothing] could improve One Piece... even a little", accuse others of "jealousy", or when asked what weakness it has, say it's "too perfect." There's fandom, and then there's Fan Dumb.
It's more. The link is outdated by 10 volumes~
@shrimpy
Askin "what could be better" or "whats the weakness" it not realy a good question. I think the manga writers and those who do the "job" in the manga industry got a better wiew on that stuff, talking about weakness in any manga as a reader or even ask is not realy good, better go out and find by you self about what "you" think is the weakness and that can be improved.
about the "luck" part and as other say "unique" is atm not so fresh comment about OnePiece. of course you got to have "luck" that you prefer to call it (i prefer to call it smart analyze of whats popular) to get a bit succes (1970 boys dont have same taste of manga as 2000 boys) but OnePiece, as DragonBall is one of the Manga that "made" the new style in the manga 2000+, and im not talking about the art, about the spirit and the concept (Bleach and Naruto is big too, but not "style making"), and that also means the "unique" part is not so "unique" anymore, because alot of manga writers track hes trail.
And about Op still dont beat DB is just a question about time, and also DB had a more global spread than OP, and not so culture involved and easy understandable than OP (weill i mean a fight is not so hard to understand huh?)
In my Opinion OP will not do as globar spread as DB, sadly the culture and the differense between wiew of life will stop the understanding of the manga "alot". (and i think thats the part that make OP "unique").
One Piece is atleast the most popular manga in Japan after Doraemon.
This has already been brought up before your post (the link, that is). You should try READING THE COMMENTS before making a fool of yourself. One Piece has now far outsold DragonBall; in fact, it is approaching the point of outselling DragonBall on a per-tankoubon basis, which a great deal of people thought could never be possible since the start of the decline of the manga industry.
I also like how you try comparing it to Naruto as if Naruto were more popular, and then call yourself a "closet" Naruto fan. And there isn't a single person who disagrees that all three of the aforementioned series are Shounen. You're clearly just one of the Americans that can't reasonably understand and pay attention to foreign opinions (I'm american myself, it's just that I find the Japanese opinion much more credible on the topic of manga).
Anyway, shrimpy, I'd still like your response to my previous post.... :3
The size of the characters is kind of confusing...I think it would be an improvement if they were more consistent. I know he does it on purpose to show differences in strength, presence, etc. but I just want to know... A chart showing them would be okay even if he keeps drawing them however he likes.
And more color spreads!! I love them so much! I know he's busy but yeah... You can't go wrong with more OP color spreads...
I can't believe it! OP is like way way way more popular than I thought... There was this huge section just for vol57 and it was filled with Naruto and Bakuman volumes with a note that said "We are very sorry but One Piece volume 57 is currently sold out" and I couldn't find Color Walk 4 either... 57 broke a record with the number of printings and is still selling out, that's pretty impressive... I'm gonna have to look for some more bookstores... I thought you were kidding when you said it was going to sell out!!
@HikaruYami
I know, I just want more... I'm sure if Oda drew them, they'd print 'em though. But I just meant there's not much to be improved in OP, the only thing that could really be better is more of it, for me at least...
I love one Piece its currently my favorite manga
I'd strongly suggest learning to read what people write, instead of superimposing your own preconceived opinions and then attacking them for what you've decided they really meant. The polite version of what that's called is "straw-man fallacy". (I'd be happy to give you the benefit of the doubt and assume it's a language barrier, but you make a point of identifying yourself as American.)
Likewise, if you think insulting me is likely to change my opinion - or anyone else's - of the relative prevalence of Fan Dumb in One Piece, you're sadly mistaken. It may feel gratifying to you or other fans to trash someone you've decided is a blasphemer, but it doesn't come off well.
EDIT: I take that back, that's poorly-worded. If you think insulting me is likely to make people think Fan Dumb is ~less~ prevalent in One Piece, you're sadly mistaken.
It teaches the future generation that pursuing one's dream and respecting the freedom to do so is much more important than....

But, it's impressive numbers, but it doesn't make it the best. Just the best-selling.
"And why is it the best-selling?!!eleven" is probably a counter question.
And I'd say, thanks to you.
Reading it - > [indirectly supporting it*] -> These numbers - > "It roxorz your sockzors"-posts -> more people reading it - > [Repeat].
*-Maybe buy it, maybe tell friends about it, maybe friends buys it, maybe someone buys you it, etc.
Saying OP is the best manga EVAAR is like saying that Avatar is THE BEST MOOVIEAA ever!eleven.

although One Piece is far from being a mediocre predictable story with nice visual XD
