Tokyo Anime Fair 2010 Suffers Impact of Tokyo's Amended Regulations 91 companies pull out of fair, leaving only 153 left participating. The executive committee of the Tokyo Anime Fair, slated to be held in March, announced on the 25th that the number of exhibitors this year has dwindled to 153, after 91 companies pulled out. In retaliation against the amendments to the Healthy Upbringing of Youths Law that regulate the sale of explicit manga and anime, companies canceled their participation one after another beginning from December when the amendments were announced.
According to the committee, there are 125 local companies expected to be at the exhibition, alongside 28 foreign companies. Due to the decrease in the number of exhibitors, the forecasted earnings for the event have decreased by ¥110,000,000 against the initial forecasts.
In response to the amended regulations, the "Comic 10 Society" consisting of Kodansha and Shogakukan, amongst others, declared that they would not take part in the fair. The executive committee said, "There are complaints from participating companies that if the Comic 10 Society does not revoke that declaration, exhibiting on Public Day (the day where the general public may attend) will be difficult."
Some companies that have announced that they are not participating, such as Kadokawa Shoten, are slated to hold their own private event in a different venue on the same day as the Tokyo Anime Fair on March 26th and 27th.
