Urasawa, Tezuka's Pluto Wins at France's Angoulême

Urasawa and Tezuka's Pluta won the Intergenerational Award at France's Angoulême International Comics Festival.

Naoki Urasawa and the late Osamu Tezuka's Pluto manga won the Prix Intergénérations (Intergenerational Award) at France's Angoulême International Comics Festival this weekend. Acclaimed literary comic creator Art Spiegelman won the top award, the Grand Prix, and will serve as the Grand Marshal of next year's event.

This is not Urasawa's first series to be acknowledged at Angoulême; in 2004 his 20th Century Boys was made the official selection. Manga by Yoshihiro Tatsumi, Shigeru Mizuki, and Tezuka were nominated in 2008; Mizuki's Opération Mort (Soin Gyokusai Se yo) won the Heritage award that year.

Other manga nominated for this year's awards include Suehiro Maruo and Edogawa Ranpo's La Chenille (Imomushi), Shotaro Ishinomori's Sabu to Ichi Torimono Hikae, Masahiko Matsumoto's La Fille du Bureau de Tabac (Tobacco-ya no Musume/Cigarette Girl), Asao Takamori and Tetsuya Chiba's Ashita no Joe, and Masashi Kishimoto's Naruto and Gosho Aoyama's Detective Conan (Case Closed).

The Anime Song 20-year-olds Can Hum to Themselves Ranking

Songs from Evangelion, Ponyo, Totoro and Dragon Ball are clear favorites across the genders.

In this day and age, it's rare for anime songs to rank into the top 10 of any CD rankings. Nevertheless, it's not difficult to find anime songs that people have heard of even without ever watching the anime, and sometimes some people will find themselves humming it. 238 men and 467 women in their 20s voted for which anime songs they most often found themselves humming.

  1. Cruel Angel's Thesis (Neon Genesis Evangelion) 22.3%
  2. Ponyo on the Cliff (Ponyo on the Cliff) 19.8%
  4. My Neighbor Totoro (My Neighbor Totoro) 19.3%
  5. Hare Hare Yukai (The Melancholy of Suzumiya Haruhi) 5.9%

  1. Ponyo on the Cliff (Ponyo on the Cliff) 32.4%
  2. My Neighbor Totoro (My Neighbor Totoro) 32.4%
  3. Cruel Angel's Thesis (Neon Genesis Evangelion) 28.8%
  4. Moonlight Legend (Pretty Soldier Sailor Moon) 23.2%

Obviously, both men and women love their Ghibli. Evangelion and Dragon Ball ranked in for both genders as well. Other songs that scored highly among both men and women were READY STEADY GO (FULLMETAL ALCHEMIST), Genesis of Aquarion (Genesis of Aquarion) and Don't say "lazy" (K-ON!).

Nice stuff about Urasawa...that somehow makes me continue the manga, because I was bored with it

Wow, what a random selection. It's like some guy just decided to line up his favorite manga or something. Why Ashita no Joe for 2010, among contemporary titles like Naruto and Pluto? What is the criteria here? Pluto read more like a love letter than one of Urasawa's usual ambitious series, did they think they had to select one of his series again since he won in 2008? What are they thinking?
